After the posthumous books of Archbishop Lefebvre, The Mass of All Time and Priestly Holiness, here is now a third volume entitled The Spiritual Life.
It gathers in a single volume the words of Archbishop Lefebvre on the subject of the life of the soul. The words of the great bishop are indeed an inexhaustible wellspring of meditation proper to nourish in the faithful their union with God, to encourage them on the field of spiritual combat and to draw them higher in the practice of Christian virtues.
This book is not an exhaustive treatise on spirituality, but a presentation of its fundamental aspects.
Marcel François Marie Joseph Lefebvre (29 November 1905 – 25 March 1991) was a French Roman Catholic archbishop. Following a career as an Apostolic Delegate for West Africa and Superior General of the Holy Ghost Fathers, he took the lead in opposing certain changes within the Church associated with the Second Vatican Council.
In 1970, Lefebvre founded the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX). In 1988, after he consecrated four bishops to continue his work with the SSPX against the expressed prohibition of Pope John Paul II, the Holy See immediately declared that he and the other bishops who had participated in the ceremony had incurred automatic excommunication under Catholic canon law. In 2009, 18 years after Lefebvre's death, Pope Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication of the four surviving bishops.
This is an organized compilation of excerpts from Marcel Lefebvre's sermons. Everything was thoughtfully laid out. There were multiple keypoints discussed in this book. One could really feel the late Archbishop's love for the Catholic doctrine... the original True Catholic doctrine. I have been friends with an SSPX priest destined in Asia. All the things we discussed are completely aligned with the contents of this book. He tries his best to stick to tradition through their founder's lectures. That says a lot how he takes the faith very seriously.
I am fully convinced that Marcel Lefebvre is a saint
This book is an absolute treasure which should be owned by every Catholic desirous of sanctity! Anyone who was blessed (as I was) with having met this holy archbishop before his death in 1991 will immediately recognize his beautiful and Christlike love of souls shining through on every page. Written by a saint to guide others to sainthood. Destined to be a classic on the spiritual life!
----------------------------------------- Wow, Archbishop Lefebvre again astounds me. With "They Have Uncrowned Him" I realized he's not just an author we should courteously read as followers of the society he founded. I think that work belongs in the company of anti-liberal classics. Here again, I was surprised at the depth of his thoughts and musings on all aspects of the Catholic interior life. He achieves an extremely simple and readable style, perfect for lay people, without sacrificing depth, and even providing unique perspectives on topics we've heard much about (eg. on the Sacraments or Virtues). Archbishop Lefebvre didn't arrange these writings himself. It was published posthumously, arranged by Fr. Patrick Troadec, SSPX, from the conferences and writings of the Archbishop. More often than not, I've been disappointed with books not arranged by the authors themselves ("Saint Thomas Aquinas: Meditations for Everyday" being one of the best examples -- wonderful author, but a very disjointed arrangement, in my opinion). This book is a marvelous exception. Wonderfully structured and organized. I will be sure to follow up this one with more of his writings (maybe "Against the Heresies" next!).
