A spaceship's crew of dangerous individuals wake up with no memory of who they are. They arrive at a planet full of colonists who need help. An evil corporation is coming to murder them and take over the planet. There's a nice twist on who these crew members are. Even though they don't get their memories back, they do find our who they are. The series borrows a lot of its aesthetics from shows like Firefly but with a darker, edgier tone.

This was written by two of the writers from the various Stargate TV series. It's also the basis for the SyFy TV show Dark Matter. It's a shame they never returned to the comic book series. There are still a lot of mysteries left open ended. I suppose I'd have to watch the TV show to see those paid off at this point.

Ryan Hill's coloring is very muddy and doesn't work all that great with Garry Brown's sketchy art. There were certainly times where it was difficult to make out the art in a panel.

Dark Matter Volume 1: Rebirth is an interesting sci fi story using the American West as an influence for a coming showdown. Parallels to Firefly and the 7 Samurai will be obvious but there are enough personalities and plot twists happening even in this first volume to keep a reader riveted enough to find out what is going to happen next.

The plot is far from simple: A crew wakes up suddenly from cryosleep to find their memories missing. They aren't sure who they are nor who their other crewmates are and if they can be trusted. Exploration of the ship uncovers a large store of arms and armaments and each of the 6 crewmembers begins to discover they have their own unique talents and skills. Unsure how to proceed, they head to the nearest settlement, a mining colony, only to find that it is preparing for war against a corporation that wants to annihilate them for mining rights. The crew then have to decide to help the colony or to leave them to their fate. And at the same time, tantalizing clues and a suspicious android will complicate matters further.

Once again, as with so many of the modern bunch of science fiction novels, it is corporations that are the enemy (aliens, black holes, and space wars are passe, apparently). Despite that disappointment of corp CEOs run amuck (and honestly, it is a rather heavy handed message that yes, corporations are evil, by the authors), we do have a complete group of unique individuals. The writing differentiates each and we're also giving hints that each has their own set of secrets to protect.

The artwork is very muddy, full of bold lines and dark shadows. It was distracting enough that I had a hard time (even now still do) figuring out if two of the characters are male or female. There are also places where characters make a discover in the ship and I have no idea the significance since I can't figure out the artwork at all. That isn't to say that the artwork is terrible; rather, it's just that the editor really should have decided if the artwork or the story was going to obfuscate the clues. With both working at the same purpose, chunks of the story become inscrutable.

In all, I will definitely watch for the next volume to see where it goes. Perhaps with the next volume I can figure out what the heck was happening in the first.

Very derivative sci-fi book, clearly based on 70s and 80s sci-fi movies, but missing the harsh, cynical edge of the 70s, and the satirical edge of the 80s.

Characters start out with memories lost, and never recover any personality. Also, there's a kid, who always seems completely out of place.

I have seen a couple of episodes of the TV series a couple of years ago, but I stopped watching for the same reasons.

(Read as four single issues.)

I decided to give this a try because 1) I'm pretty much a sucker for anyone trying to do science fiction in comics nowadays and 2) the writers had worked on the Stargate television series so I figured they should have an idea of how to tell a story (from the few episodes I had scene).

The entire creative team does a good job of pacing, and not dragging out key story points. Six people wake up on a sstarship with no memory of who they are. Instead of dragging this story point out for several volumes we find out basically who they are in this volume, get a dose of action and a hint of what could come if sales warrant a second volume. There are some writers in the graphic and television field who should learn this lesson themselves.

I was pretty surprised to see how great was this graphic novel. SyFy did a great work adapting it to a tv show.

Reason for Reading: I was in the mood for a space travel story and the amnesiac angle sounded intriguing.

This story was exciting! I dislike drawing comparisons like this but all throughout I kept thinking how much like "Firefly" the feel of this crew and the plot was. Afterwards I found out the writers were actually involved with writing for all the various "Stargate" shows but even knowing that I still got a very strong Firefly vibe and those who like FF will enjoy this tale. A motley crew with 2 women, 3 men and a child. Varied personalities and visual looks make them different from one another as they play off and antagonize each other. Slight pairings off are made and we even have the mysterious child counterpart of River (from Firefly) in the as yet unnamed female child. An exciting off world episode introduces us to the characters and gives them their first assignment as a team. This would make for a great TV show and plays out well in graphic format. Humour is added to the mix to bring an enjoyable group of characters, with plenty of action, and a backstory running over with mystery and possible storylines. My only complaint is the art. I don't like it. The faces are ugly and when panning out, groups of people become rough-shaped squiggles, blobs or outlines. Fortunately, the characters and plot carry this fun space travel adventure.

I saw they were making a show on Syfy about this, so I wanted to check it out. I really liked this book! I love the premise of a group of people waking up with amnesia, but it felt like they could have let that play out longer than they did. Although I definitely enjoyed the couple of major plot twist revelations that play out in this story, especially the cliff hanger ending. I haven't been able to find if there are more in this series, but hopefully the show will be a success and keep the story going. If done right, I think this could develop a Firefly-like cult following.

I remember picking this up at the comic book store when the first issue came out. I knew nothing about this and I just bought it because it looked pretty cool, that's about all I had going on. I have to admit, it was very cool. I had no idea, at the time, that this was created by people that worked on the Stargate TV series, so I'm not surprised this wound up being pretty good. This was meant to be the first round in a mini series, where by the end you knew there was more to this world. It's sad that they never made anymore comics in this series or expanded upon the universe.

The general gist of the story is that a crew of people wake up on a ship with their memories wiped out. The first two issues explore that problem before they unlock who they are. Eventually they find out who they are and that they may not have been the best of people, this creates that amnesia trope of maybe it was better to forget. I see this theme show up a lot in manga, so it's kind of tiresome, but hey, this is a pretty cool sci-fi setting, so I'll run with it. They find out the ship was on route to a particular planet and so they go to investigate. After they are there they find themselves in sort of a corporate war, so to speak, and then have to make tough choices about who they are now, after their memory is wiped out.

When they get to the planet in question, this series definitely starts to take on Firefly vibes quite a bit. The settlement looks like an old Western town in the U.S. complete with saloon! So this series blends quite a few things together from various sci-fi genres and scenarios. The corporate structure has a bit of that Aliens feel, especially with the colonization of worlds and so on, I mean, it's not exactly unique to Aliens, but that's my go to reference half the time in things like this.

So, I had read this back when it came out and I had no idea this ended up becoming a TV show. Even though there were no more comics written in this setting, I'm happy to see there are about three seasons worth of a TV show out there. I just ordered Season 1 after finding out in the reviews by other readers!

I don't know how the show will compare yet, but some people said this mini series was a recap of the first season. It's more like the other way around, the first season is more like an extended version of this mini series. Either way, I look forward to checking out more because this world build seemed pretty fun.

read due to the cancellation of the TV series. (sad face)
this volume really just sets up the concept and the art is not my favorite (personal preference) so it really doesn't make up for losing the threads of the story. (there are currently no follow-ons). Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will pick-up from the series as happened with Firefly. If they do, here's hoping they use the same artist (as Firefly, not this edition)!

Dark Matter Volume 1: Rebirth
RATING: 3.5 stars.

I don't read a lot of "western" (ah) graphic novels (I'm more of a manga girl) but the synopsis for "Dark Matter" interested me. People who wake up in space with amnesia? Yes, please.

Six people wake up inside a ship with no memories of who they are. This ship is headed for a planet they've never heard of. It is soon apparent that they're not ordinary travelers and that their memories were wiped out by someone. But by whom? And why? As they begin a search for answers they uncover things about themselves that may be difficult to live with.

Dark Matter was an enjoyable read. It had action, some mystery and a lot of though guys who were heroic, but apparently are not exactly heroes. A few of the characters, most especially the robot, seemed kind of... superfluous and there isn't much character development yet (keep in mind this is only volume one), but I really liked Lin and the young girl. The male characters looked basically the same to me, all badass guys that were good with guns (and swords). The villains in this first volume were very stereotypical too.It reminded me a lot of an action/sci-fi movie. The world is sort of gritty, a strange combination of Firefly (band of misfits with a spaceship) and Trigun (the very Old Western feel of the colonized cities). As for the art, I can't judge it accurately for obvious reasons, but I think it suited the story.

Overall, an interesting read. I feel there is more to the plot and am really curious about the girl (the sixth passenger). Recommended for fans of sci-fi and graphic novels.

I received a copy of Dark Matter from Dark Horse Books through Netgalley. Thank you.

Note: I watched the first season of the TV show prior to reading.

Issue one feels like a summary, people wake up on a ship with no memories but find out they do remember how to do some things. Android is discovered, planet is explored. That went entirely too fast. The characters don't get a chance to grow on us, and except for a comment here or there we don't get much of a feeling for who they are or what their histories may be, and that's one of the main driving aspects of the show. So when we go through the moral dilemmas of helping people or not fighting or running, I just don't care, and that's three of the issues. We are supposed to think about whether or not we would want to know of our pasts or just forge a new future but that doesn't really fit with the pace. To top it off I'm not sympathetic to the inhabitants of the planet in this. There is potential there if expanded, but in this instance the show is definitely better than the comic.

I've been wanting to read this for a while, so I'm glad I finally found a copy around town. I've been a fan of Mallozzi and Mullie on Stargate, and have been following Mallozzi's blog for years, so this was a treat. In recent years I seem to have picked up a bad habit of racing through comics and not taking time to sit and savor the atmosphere and pacing, so it seemed like this book just flew by. Good story and one I hope gets continued as it ends on an intriguing note, although far from a cliffhanger. The art style, however, is not really my thing, and left me confused as to what was going on and even who was being depicted at times. Still, a good sci-fi comic.

Mother of all Sci-fi Gods and Goddesses! I loved it. The tv show is just as cool and amazeballs! I've been in a sci-fi kick for the last couple of months (blame it on Humans, Orphan Black, Dark Matter, Killjoys and Sense8 lol) and I've wanted to read more graphic novels lately, so I combined the two! lol

"Because we're dangerous."

Dark Matter is and always will be my biggest obsession, and I have no idea why it's taken me so long to read the comic that inspired it! The comic essentially covers the first two episodes of the show, and is mostly the same with a few interesting differences - namely, . But it has the same intriguing beginning that hooked me into the show and made me need to find out more. Not sure why they never made more comics, but they could be a good back up plan if no one will pick up the show for the last two seasons. Because one way or another, we need a proper ending!

Dark Matter forever!

A bunch of people wake up to find themselves on a ship full of weapons with no memories they can recall. As they try to figure out who they are and why they're on the ship they get caught up in a larger battle, and have to make a decision as to what side they're on. The problem with amnesia storylines is they remove all semblance of character so all we're left with is some generic action hero tropes. Even if they're enjoyable to read they don't really have anything that makes me care about them. There are some cool twists with the revelations of memories but overall it's just kind of there. It's fine. It's like the pilot episode of a TV show where no one's figured out where the story is actually going to go yet or why the audience should care.

I picked this up because I love the Syfy show. This served as the basis for the show, and the pilot episode follows it pretty closely. On the one hand, that's cool. On the other, the comic actually suffers in comparison to the show, which is in its third season and has had time to build the characters and the world. This is an enjoyable story, but ultimately, it doesn't have the length to do much with the characters or expand upon the mystery of who everyone is and how their memories got wiped. Occasionally, the action scenes were hard to follow. A neat jumping-off point, but not much more than that.

I've never watched the TV series so I was reading this as a graphic novel with no certain expectations. I thought the premise was very interesting, a space ship full of amnesiacs who don't know who they are or what they doing in space. As the story unravels it starts to come together, and some of it was predictable. There were hints of sci fi epics, westerns, and action all mixed together here. The art wasn't bad but wasn't really my style. Overall this was a decent read that started out really strong and sorta went downhill a little as it went on. If you like the TV show, however, I'm thinking you should enjoy it.

This was a lot of fun! I thought it would be more different from the show, and was amazed how much of the dialogue seems to be copy-paste from book to screen. Anyway, I liked the art, the characters, the setting, and the story. I thought this was a whole series, but unless I'm missing something huge, this seems to be the only volume? I mean, it says "Volume One" on the cover, which you'd think would imply subsequent volumes, but I can't find anything to support that view. I wish I could. I was hoping to alleviate my sorrow at the premature end of the TV show by finally picking up the comic, but it seems this was even more tragically brief than the television series!

I've been watching the series, and had several questions about plot and characters. This clarified several things for me.
A diverse crew awakes on a starship with memories erased. The group includes: an android, a massive man, a testy guy with muscles, an Asian man with sword skills , a female preteen/teen, and a very take charge woman. The preteen flashes on bits of memories from other members of the crew. They end up near a planet that desperately needs help against the evil Federation--- but they have no idea why they are there.
Compelling.

A bout of nostalgia for Firefly led me to watch Dark Matter. Which was an excellent choice. After finishing the abruptly-ended series and discovering that SciFi cut the show (ah, how familiar), I picked up the graphic novels hoping to see where the story ends, and what differences exist between versions.

Not a bad graphic novel, I loved the tv series on SyFy channel and I am bummed they cancelled it. I do appreciate that this and the show were relatively accurate to each other, although this graphic novel felt very rushed. Plus, this is called Volume 1 so......where are the other volumes? I really liked the show, I would completely keep reading the graphic novels if they are written!
