Between unexpectedly raising his spirited niece, Indy, and struggling to keep his father’s auto-repair shop afloat, Thomas Morrow is barely holding it all together. With each passing day, he feels more like a failure. Thomas is sick of doing this alone so, late one night, he makes a plea to the universe for help.
The next morning brings June Renn, the owner of the green hatchback just towed into Thomas’s shop, and Indy’s new favorite person. While June waits at the shop for her car to be fixed, a bond between her and Indy blossoms. She’s easygoing and funny, she loves to draw with crayons, and she has completely captured Indy’s heart...
In a desperate attempt to keep his niece happy, Thomas betrays his integrity as a mechanic and lies to June. The lie? It’ll take a week to fix her car. The truth? He could have her back on the road in no time, but he can’t bear to see Indy go through the loss of one more person - even a stranger. Using his newly discovered powers of deception, he convinces June to stay with him and Indy until her car is fixed.
Thomas is willing to live with the consequences of his actions. And there will be consequences - he’s not naive enough to think otherwise - but how much can really happen in one week?
I saw this on TikTok and snagged it when it was free during a Kindle sale. I was immediately enraptured by this book and stayed up late to finish. I shared a lot of things in common with June and it felt like the author was picking memories from my brain to write this book. Plain June was the ultimate slow burn of a woman whose car breaks down in a strange town and her mechanic extends her stay while working on her vehicle. This book was so special and tender. My itty bitty complaints were the secondary couple moved faster than the primary couple and we didn't get a love scene until 98% of the book. That's just me being a horny toad, but hey at least I got one. The tiny child was a bit annoying at times, but I guess that's kids for ya. I cannot emphasize how sweet this book was and I'm so glad I found it. I would love to read more from this author and continue with her lovely writing. I was definitely in my feelings after finishing this book. These two were a match made in heaven and I could only wish my mechanics were as dreamy as Thomas.
This is a VERY cute read. Small town romance, FMC finding her way through life while MMC is struggling and taking care of his niece. It did take a minute to adjust to the multi-perspective POV since not many books are formatted that way, but eventually I found to appreciate seeing different POVs in a specific moment which really helped visually play out what was going on in the book. It’s a slow burn between the MCs; there’s a splash of spice; gay romance is included; and heavily body positive! Overall a very good read.
Plain June was a great read, just what I needed at this point in time, something sweet, something without heartbreak in it. I don’t usually pick up romance, but it didn’t sound like entirely romance to me when I read the back and I would say it is definitely a romance, but not what I always thought romance was which is like Harlequin romance of the old days. It’s a sweet story with found family, finding yourself, and finding acceptance. If the author agrees, I will be selecting this as a future, famous authors book for 2026.
Kit Selden's writing style is so easy to read. The binge-able story telling kept me turning pages and saying "just one more chapter."
With tropes like forced proximity, found family, and more, I totally recommend this book. The chemistry between June and Thomas is palpable. Side/support characters have depth that adds to the storyline. The romance builds in a slow burn realistic pace.
This was a cozy read for me, and I would definitely jump back in to read more about these characters and their world. Great depth to the characters. Absolutely lovely!
