Control, pain, and sorrow are all I’ve ever known. When something inside me snaps one night after too many cracks in my soul, I take matters into my own hands.
Freedom was supposed to taste sweet, not leave a sour pit in my stomach. When a nightmare from my past resurfaces. My deceased boyfriend’s father helps remove the root of all my problems.
Let the scars serve as a testament—my vengeance will be absolute, and my abusers will pay.
A haunting journey of vengeance and survival. Clara has suffered abuse her whole life and now it's at the hands of her boyfriend, she tries to escape but it only backfires, so when she's granted an opportunity for freedom and vengeance she takes it. She dishes out the brutality, violence, damage and suffering she and other women have experienced back onto the villains. Alongside her new partner in crime Burke, she gets to experience love, protection, and support, and a handy clean up crew on standby for her revenge.
First and foremost, i would like to say that I have read a couple of books by Marla, and they are always dark, or borderline dark. Not to say that it’s completely pitch black, but I always know with her the things that happen are always unhinged. This story is no different. This story follows Clara, who growing up was raped and abused physically by her stepfather, she has trauma, and not just psychological trauma. She thinks that love is the type where your men have to be physical — which lands her with Ryan. Ryan, is a drunk. He is always physical and drinking, making it worse than anything. In the story, you see with most DV stories that the woman is stripped of her freedom.. not allowed to have friends, etc. in this case, she simply had no family. Burke comes into the story when he finds out that his son is hurting her. Burke does not believe in putting his hands on women. He helps her clean up her mess throughout the story after her killings, and promises to love her even on her hard days. He’s a protective MMC who is also dealing with his own trauma, I loved there story, but i also felt it was a bit quick. Maybe it’s just me but i felt like maybe things were happening so fast and it doesn’t really feel like it’s realistic i guess?
We follow Clara’s story of living through being with an abusive partner until she breaks, not down definitely not that, she goes so dark, it’s pitch. She does have someone on her side, Burke is dominant when he has to be but he also gives her what she deserves to aid in her recovery and if that includes deleting abusers then so be it 🤭
IMHO I can’t stress enough how Marla’s writing just gets to me, her penchant for a depth of emotions tinged with a smattering of 🩸and g0re just works it magic. I’ve read most of her books and I love them, they just call to my dark heart. This one though hits in the right places, if you’ve encountered any abuse, then just know you are not alone and this story leads us into territories we want to be armed with. Half the proceeds from this book are going to DV survivors 🥰
A dark and haunting tale of vengeance and survival. Clara has endured a lifetime of abuse, and now her boyfriend’s cruelty pushes her to the edge. When her attempt to escape fails, she’s given a rare chance at both freedom and revenge and she seizes it without hesitation. With her new partner in crime, Burke, at her side, Clara turns the pain and violence she and countless other women have suffered back on those who deserve it. Amid the chaos, she finds something unexpected love, protection, and a partner who helps her clean up the mess as she delivers her own brand of justice.
A great short quick read, I loved watching Clara grow into her own and see the vengance she pulled out! The spice was delicious, everyone deserves a Burke. Parts of the book felt rushed, I would have loved to get to know more about the characters and their past but to be expected for a novella.
I adore books that have a kick a** heroine who finds her fight. This book has that, just reading the dedication made me had feels. I love how the author wrote about the heroine who lost her herself and was able to regain who she is with new stuff added. I liked how the hero helped grow that like a flower waiting to bloom.
Clara has been in bad situations her whole life. Her boyfriend Ryan has been treating her not so nice until she finally had enough. Burke is Ryan's dad and Clara's savior. This is a very good dark revenge novella. I was hooked from beginning to end and very fast-paced
A short quick read. Our girl Clara has seen the worst of the worst regarding men, so she takes vengeance into her own hands. We love that for her. 💁🏻♀️
Some gory scenes and domestic violence, so check your triggers first. 🫶🏻
A dark but excellent novel that has triggers for a reason! Be prepared for how dark this is, and how broken the FMC appears to be, until she meets the fine ass MMC dad.... I say no more other than delve in and enjoy!
I love everything about this book. I love that Burke was 100% on board with helping Clara get her revenge Right from the beginning even against his own shit bag of a son. I knew he was a real man from that moment. I love how she gained her power back throughout the book and in the end created something to help other women in her former situation.
What Did I Just Walk Into? A trauma survivor turned avenger story that asks: what if the final girl didn’t just survive, but came back swinging? Clara’s lived through hell twice—once under her stepfather’s abuse and again under her boyfriend’s “love.” When she finally snaps, she doesn’t just escape. She makes sure no one else has to live through what she did. Enter Burke, her deceasedboyfriend’s father (yes, really), who’s got a clean-up crew and a soft spot for justice served cold. Together, they paint the town red—literally.
Here’s What Slapped:
Clara’s rage is righteous. Watching her go from victim to vengeance incarnate is equal parts satisfying and terrifying.
Burke is oddly compelling. Think “gritty fixer with a moral code”—equal parts menace and mentor.
Ms. York doesn’t flinch. The abuse scenes hurt, but they’re written with purpose, not shock value. When the violence flips direction, it’s cathartic in the darkest way.
Short, sharp, and visceral. For under 200 pages, it punches harder than many full-length thrillers.
Proceeds for a purpose. Half of this book’s profits go to DV survivors, which adds heart behind the horror.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The story moves at a brisk pace, which keeps the tension high, but a few moments could’ve benefited from slowing down to let Clara’s emotions settle and resonate.
Some of the dialogue between Clara and Burke leans into drama, yet that intensity fits the weight of their trauma.
The romance is a nice layer of healing and hope. Still, a little extra focus on Clara finding her footing solo before opening her heart again would’ve made her transformation shine brighter.
Perfect for Readers Who Love:
Female-led revenge tales that make you cheer and wince at the same time Vivid, bloody catharsis with a side of justice Quick reads that still leave emotional bruises The idea that closure sometimes comes with a shovel

A brutal, unapologetic slice of vengeance fiction that doesn’t just bleed—it bites.
I love books about female unalivers, especially when they are seeking revenge against those who have wronged them. They author did such a great job of really showing Clara’s opposing feelings not just in her relationship (wants to leave him but then also thinks she doesn’t deserve him), but also in her revenge plans. It all felt very real and realistic for a victim of lifelong abuse.
I enjoyed how supportive Burke was of everything she needed. From helping her clean up the messes to strictly holding her even though he wanted more, he was always there for her and did whatever she needed him to for her to heal. I also loved their age gap, because I’m an age gap lover 🤭
I definitely wish their backstory had been fleshed out more, as I didn’t really understand their connection and how they came to be so close. I also was hoping there would be something hinted at between her friend Bailey and his clean up guy Curt.
Overall, I felt the book had a lot of promise, but focused on too many things in too short of a time (and thus not deeply enough on the couple and their backstories) to have as large of an impact as it could have.
Thank you to Marla York for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
I'll never understand how people can treat others in such a vile way and my heart goes out to all who have been a victim of these monsters. You're strong, you matter and you deserve all the good that the world can offer.

Another great revenge story by York! This short read focuses around domestic violence and the wrath of a women who's reached her limit and seeks vengeance. I always enjoy a revenge story, kicking back at the scum of the world and this one did not disappoint!
Clare is ferocious and blood thirsty, she dishes out revenge with such creative brutality, giving every man exactly what they deserve.
But that's not all, Clara, has found support in a man, he stands by her side and treats her right in ways she's never known ... Oh, and let's not forget the spice!
✞
I love the innovative kills that York writes out for her characters and Clara is a total badass woman, you really do not want to be on her bad side!
My Thoughts:
Marla York never fails to be a hit with me. This book gave Lauren Biel vibes but not quite so crazy or intense. If you’re a fan of Lauren Biel, you’ll probably enjoy this book. If you’re not a fan of Lauren Biel, this is still an entirely different style from hers and it’s great. This is the ultimate revenge from an abuser book. It’s got a great twisted storyline. It’s short and anything but sweet, dark and messy taboo romance. I loved the unexpected turns that the plot took. Just a quick little TW note, this book discusses a lot of childhood and relationship abuse in detail so keep that in mind. Anyways, I’ll just be over here waiting for the next Marla book!
Fateful Vengeance is an erotic horror novella written by Marla York. Just in time for spooky season! Check your trigger warnings!
Clara has suffered abuse at the hands of men all her life. From her stepfather to her boyfriend now. She knows that when her boyfriend Ryan drinks, he always gets physical, so she tries to prevent that from happening, only making things worse. When things take a turn, Clara gets a taste of revenge and its only the beginning.
The read may be short, but it was packed full of gory goodness! I love a femme revenge story! In her darkest moment, she had someone on her side to help and take care of her. The book was fast-paced and ended too soon. I wish it had been a little longer. This is only my second book of York’s that I have read, but I am now a fan. I love the darkness she brings to the table. The spice is delicious. She also gives us Burke, someone we could all use on our side.
My heart goes out to everyone who has suffered DV.
Thanks to Marla York for gifting me an eARC of Fateful Vengeance. I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” Fateful Vengeance is an erotic horror novella the perfect dark and twisted read for the spooky season. Please note that this story contains sensitive content and readers should review trigger warnings before diving in. The story follows Clara, a woman who has endured abuse from the men in her life from her stepfather to her current boyfriend, Ryan. When Ryan drinks, he becomes violent, and Clara’s attempts to prevent his outbursts only make things worse. After a shocking turn of events, Clara begins to experience the intoxicating power of revenge and it’s only the beginning. Although brief, this novella delivers a fast paced, visceral narrative packed with intensity and gore. I’ve always enjoyed a well written femme revenge story, and York delivers that with raw emotion and dark satisfaction. Even in Clara’s darkest moments, she finds an ally who stands by her side, adding a layer of hope to the horror. This story masterfully blends darkness, spice, and emotional depth. Burke, one of the characters, adds an element of strength and reliability that balances the story’s intensity. Must read! 💛
This is a powerful story of Clara’s fight to leave a life of abuse from different male relationships and her struggle to come to terms with the trauma and survive and heal in her own ways.
Clara the FMC, has been abused her entire life by men. She finally has enough and fights back with a vengeance!
Burke, The MMC, is the father of one of Clara’s abusers, helps with her healing journey and shows her what love is truly meant to be like.
This story while violent and filled with unimaginable pain and suffering, it is also a story of perseverance, extreme strength, healing, hope and love for the FMC Clara, others in her situation are not so lucky or fortunate. The Author, who also mentions that they are a survivor, is donating half the royalties of this book to a non profit organization that helps DV survivors. ❤️
I received this book as an ARC and I am freely giving my honest review.
I’m so thankful to have received this book as an ARC in return for my honest review!!
As a domestic violence survivor I couldn’t wait to read this one when I found out about it! CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS!! The first little bit was difficult for me as there were similarities as to what I went through even down to receiving no help but oh my gosh I had to keep going!! If only we could all be a badass and have our revenge as the FMC in this book!!! I absolutely love how she overcame every single thing she went through and was completely unhinged towards abusers! I’m so glad she found safe love that she so deserved but I like how there were also multiple points of how DV messes with you mentally in the long run and for future relationships! This book was so good! From being unhinged, SPICY, forbidden romance, revenge, and more!! The entire read flowed nicely and was well put in my opinion!
Definitely appreciative for this book for giving a hint of what survivors deal with during and after abuse, I couldn’t imagine trying to write it out! 💜
Fateful Vengeance is a dark, fem rage romance that had me cheering for my girl, Clara. After everything that she has been through and the people who had stifled her light just for the sake of being in control and too cowardly to show any sort of vulnerability hinting at their own weakness, yeah, she did what she did. I'm not mad at her! I quickly fell for Burke (her ex's dad) because all he did was support and love her regardless of what she felt she needed to do to take back her power. Who doesn't love a supportive Daddy?! 😏 I love that half of the royalties from this book will go to a non-profit organization that helps DV survivors. It's just another testament to the author's own trauma and understanding for those who feel trapped and powerless.
This one is dark, dark. You'll need to check your TWs. But I do HIGHLY recommend this one for my dark romance besties. 🖤
If you are triggered by physical or $exu@l abuse, domestic violence, torture as revenge, or references to assault of a child then proceed carefully.
This was a haunting, disturbing, but ultimately satisfying story of our female main character’s systematic cycle of abuse and her long time coming payback when her piece of cr@p boyfriend pushes her that smidge too far.
I have to be honest and say that I take great enjoyment when dirtbags get what’s coming to them, and even more so when the abused and underestimated heroine is the one doling it out.
Although parts of this were harder to read due to the taboo nature of events in the story, I did enjoy this overall. I especially enjoyed the age gap/ ex-bf’s dad element of it as well. Burke is so supportive and has a bit of a dark side himself.

I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. Please check your triggers before reading. As a DV survivor this book laid it all out and what a ride!! Clair suffered DV all her life and one day she finally had enough and got her revenge!! You feel all the emotions that she felt when reading this but when she couldn’t get the help she needed she took matters into her own hands! Her now deceased boyfriend’s father helps her and there is some forbidden love and lots of spice!! I want to thank the Author for sharing and if you are in DV situation please get help!!
“Freedom was supposed to taste sweet, not leave a sour pit in my stomach. When a nightmare from my past resurfaces. My deceased boyfriend’s father helps remove the root of all my problems.”
Fateful Vengeance is a dark and emotional story. Clara has only known abuse her entire life however when enough is enough, she takes things into her own hands, regardless of the consequences. Unbeknownst to Clara, she has an unlikely accomplice in her corner. Burke is full of regret for not seeing things sooner, but vows that she will never be hurt again. Despite the age difference, Burke is able to show Clara how she should have been treated all along. Clara is hesitant thinking he will tell her he is done and kick her to the curb because of how she is or because of the monster inside her. Burke gives her a way to exercise her monster in a controlled environment as well as being patient with her while she adjusts to a different way of life. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. Can’t wait to see what comes next!!
Yet another wickedly incredible book by Marla York.
Her writing is always so captivating and this one really spoke to my soul. As someone who was with an extreme narcissist for 2 years, healing from the abúse takes time, and sometimes the right person. Clara even says in the book “The only thing that matters in life is who will have you forever. To be the rock needed to help you put your pieces back together, and someone to depend on to be there during the highs and the lows.”
I’m a sucker for a strong female lead, and knowing that Marla poured so much of her own reliance and past into this book made it even more special to read.
Thank you for all you do, and for donating half the royalties to women like Carla who may need it.
This short novella really guts you, in the best possible way. Please read the trigger warnings before reading as this book touches on devastating subjects.
Whenever I read any of Marla York’s novellas I am gobsmacked at how tactfully she addresses trauma, and although we can’t act out in the same way her characters do, the way she breaks down their trauma and healing leaves you knowing that any experiences you have been through are valid (no matter the scale) and that you don’t deserve such treatment.
Her novellas always pack a punch and this one did not disappoint. Even if you have been through any of the trauma listed, it’s written about so cleverly that it’s actually liberating. Yes, you will cry, but you will love the fact that you are.
i swear this author has not written anything that hasn't been a hit. now before reading please check warnings ... its got gore and dv now this was a short quick read. i literally was glued to the book the entire time. we follow Clara a woman who has had the $hittiest luck when it comes to men. one day that changes. enter burke a man who has had a soft spot for Clara. he finds her one day in a gore scene. he tells her he will protect her and together they go on path of vengeance. our girl went through all that pain and abuse to get her happy ending. while this book is short its not lacking anything. the spice was spicing and the plot was plotting

This was a very dark read. Please be advised that this book may be triggering to anyone who has experienced domestic or childhood abu53.
This was empowering to read, as Clara is able to heal and process with the support of Burke, her exes dad. The growth she has is commendable and I hope that anyone who goes through a similar experience, finds the ability to heal, process and find peace.
I received this book as an ARC and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This book is an intense, emotional deep dive into what it means to survive, rebuild, and still find love after the darkest moments. It’s written with raw honesty — you can feel the author’s experience woven through the pages, even if the “deleting people” part is pure fiction It’s short, fast-paced, and brutally emotional.
This book is heavy — trauma, violence, mental health struggles. Please check content warnings and take care of yourself before diving in.
A dark, unapologetic story about survival, healing, and love after devastation. Quick but powerful — this one’s going to sit in your chest for a while.
Please read trigger warnings before you read this book. Your mental health matters especially with what goes on in this story about Clara.
I was happy when Clara finally got to do what she did and how Burke was there for her. Clara and Burke worked so well together and he would do anything for her even help her do the one thing she needed to get over the past. Clara was on a mission to help others and I do kinda wish I could have got to see her do more in the book because the revenge was great but I did enjoy what I did get to read.
This story is very emotional and full of trauma. The best parts are when Clara finds her inner strength and delivers poetic justice for her abusers. It's absolutely amazing and beautifully satisfying well earned revenge. I'm team Clara all the way. And Burke is a dream come true for Clara and Clara is a dream come true for Burke. Loved how Clara started helping survivors. Everyone needs a safe place to escape their abusers. Very excellent read. Shout out to all the women survivors. If there is a will there is a way. Please check TW before reading. I highly recommend this book. It's a must read. Marla gives you the honest dark truths about abuse. I really enjoy reading her books.
