Novalis was the pseudonym of Georg Philipp Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg, an author and philosopher of early German Romanticism.

His poetry and writings were an influence on Hermann Hesse. Novalis was also a huge influence on George MacDonald, and so indirectly on C.S. Lewis, the Inklings, and the whole modern fantasy genre.

A beautiful collection of devotional poetry by the talented but troubled young poet. Simplistic and pure in both intent and execution they offer a soothing balm to the chaos and torment of living.

Consumed in love and longing lonely ,
Each day had worn the night’s dull face;
With hot tears I had followed only
Afar life’s wildly rushing race.
In crowded streets all restless driven –
Grief-gnawed beside the hopeless hearth –
Who, who that had no friend in heaven
Could to the end hold out on earth?

Life is a twilight softly stealing;
The world speaks all of love and glee;
Grows for each wound a herb of healing,
And every heart beats full and free.
I, for his thousand-folded giving,
His humble child, his knees embrace;
Sure that we share his presence living
When two are gathered in one place.

Io vivo di giorno
Con fede e coraggio
E muoio la notte
In ardore sacro”
.

In scioltezza aggiungerei.

Gli inni alla notte decisamente 5 stelle su 5
I canti spirituali...

I've only just discovered Novalis, so this was perhaps not the best intro to his work, since the translation, by today's standards at least, is laboured, overwrought and, I felt, unnecessarily obscure at times. I've since discovered Walter Toy's 'The Mysticism of Novalis: An Interpretation of Die Hymnen an die Nacht' and it helped me to get a much better feel for the passion and poetry of the original. As for Novalis himself - I'm bowled over by his romantic imagination (a breath of fresh air in the 21st century!) and by his idiosyncratic vision of the spirit of darkness. It brought to mind Jung's reflections on the nature of the psyche - the archetype of wholeness - the numinous experience of 'something whole' transcending consciousness - as Jung might have said, the "light that illuminates the darkness within" - and it made me wonder if by the end of his life Novalis had achieved a level of individuation. He strikes me as a sweet, sensitive and gifted individual - one of those rare creative types who just don't seem to be made for this world. I'm glad he 'unearthed' me.

Interesting to read Novalis alongside contemporary English romantic poets. Coleridge (with whom he bears some affinity, both mysticisms rooted in darkness and the threshold of dreams) and Wordsworth (with whom he would appear to share less-- Novalis' spirituality is utterly personal and not mediated through Nature). Novalis is an essential reference point in the development of the romantic mysticism of the self. This translation, I fear, does not serve well. It often seems lazy or strained at the level of grammatical construction. One gets a decent sense of the singular determination and conviction of the poet, but the poetry itself is disappointing, repetitive, tedious and rarely electric in its imagery.

Over I pilgrim
Where every pain
Zest only of pleasure
Shall one day remain.
Yet a few moments
Then free am I,
And intoxicated
In Love's lap lie.
Life everlasting
Lifts, wave-like, at me:
I gaze from its summit
Down after thee.
Oh sun, thou must vanish
Yon yon hillock beneath;
A shadow will bring thee
Thy cooling wreath.
Oh draw at my heart, love,
Draw till I'm gone,
That, fallen asleep, I
Still may love on.
I feel the flow of
Death's youth-giving flood;
To balsam and aether, it
Changes my blood!
I live all the daytime
In faith and in might:
And in holy rapture
I die every night.

Peccato.

I'm amazed by Novalis' imagination and sensitivity. I was especially intrigued by his imaginative and mythic re-working of the world's spiritual history in (part five of Hymns to the Night). I give Hymns to the Night five stars and Spiritual Songs three stars, earning this collection an overall four stars.

As someone who loves poetry and has enjoyed reading many of George MacDonald’s novels, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, these did not materialise. I found Hymns to the Night somewhat obscure and meandering, and although the Spiritual Songs did have some beautiful and powerful lines, the translation lacked flow and rhythm.
