🐉 Dragon Descending by Jennifer Allis Provost is the second book in the Fire and Claw series. This book picked right up where the first one left off. We jump back in with Rosalie and Lochlyn at Dragon’s Ridge with Caterina and Curran, reunited and recently rescued from the clutches of the nasty King Olivar. In book one, the group is helped by Thira, the king’s seer, who is now in desperate need of rescuing herself after he learns she helped them! Lochlyn and Curran depart on a rescue mission for the seer and chaos ensues! We meet lots of new and interesting characters along the way and learn a lot more about the shifters, the Kingdom of Alessia and the world at large in this book.
I enjoyed that this book focused more on building the world, characters, and the political landscape and less on the romance between Rosalie and Lochlyn. I really enjoyed all of the new characters that we met in book 2, and the found “family” dynamics that developed along the journey. I found that the writing style in book 2 was a little easier to follow and keep my attention than in book 1. I’m excited to see what becomes of our interesting cast of characters and how they will try to take back their world from the terrible king!

Dragon Descending was definitely an improvement over Phoenix Rising for me, but I still don’t think this series is fully landing the way I want it to.
The lore continues to be my favorite part. I really enjoy the different shifter lineages, the way their abilities and inheritance work, and how much more the magical history started connecting to the politics of Alessia. This time around, those pieces also felt much more integrated into the actual story instead of just being interesting facts dropped into the world.
The biggest improvement was the structure. The relationships, political conflict, mysteries, and magical discoveries were happening alongside one another, which gave the story a much more natural progression than the first book. I especially enjoyed the mystery surrounding the basilisk because we were actually given clues throughout the book and allowed to start piecing things together before the full reveal. That was much more satisfying than simply being handed an answer.
Caterina and Curran were another highlight for me. Their relationship had the slower emotional build I was missing before, and I appreciated that Caterina’s trauma wasn’t something that disappeared the moment she was safe. Watching them gradually find their way back to each other gave their relationship much more weight.
That said, I still found myself interested more than invested. There are a lot of genuinely good ideas here, but the storytelling still doesn’t always give them enough depth to hit as hard as they could. Even when the mystery was better developed, the eventual answers sometimes came through large exposition-heavy conversations rather than discovery happening naturally on the page.
There’s also a lot going on—multiple relationships, political conspiracies, magical lineages, old family secrets, shifting abilities, the Otherworld—and while I enjoyed many of those individual pieces, the book never quite reached that point where I couldn’t put it down.
Overall, this was a stronger sequel with better pacing, more interconnected plotting, and some character arcs I genuinely enjoyed. I still really like the lore and think there is a fascinating fantasy world underneath this series, but the execution continues to keep me at a bit of a distance.

Thank you for the Arc of this story Jennifer Allie Provost. I am reviewing this honestly and of my own opinion.
I just read Phoenix Rising and Dragon Descending and may I just say that I am so WOWED.
Just a quick summary of Dragon Descending: leaving off from the events of the first book, Phoenix Rising, after saving Rosalie’s sister from King Oliver’s slimy clutches, Lochlyn Blackmoor struggles to shift into his dragon at will. Lochlyn is content to live life with his growing family at Dragon Ridge until conflict strikes when the king sentences the seer, who helped Lochlyn and his family escape, to death. Lochlyn is then forced to put a rescue team together to save the seer. In the midst of this he faces betrayal, finds unlikely allies, and discovers the deepest secrets the kingdom keeps.
The summary doesn’t even begin to cover all the conflicts and plot twists that arise within the story. I will say some of my favorite tropes are in this book! I’m a fool for fated/shifter mates,touch her or die, and found family tropes. I’m very very pleased that between the main love interests, Lochlyn and Rosalie, the author did not give them weird miscommunication conflicts in the first or second book. I hate that in books, and I loved reading their love story. Dragon ridge seems like such a beautiful place.
One of my personal wishes is that I would like to have read an even more detailed story. I love world building, background stories, and descriptive words. This story does have that but I love in depth details. That’s just the kind of prose that I prefer but I know that’s not everyone’s thing.
I would definitely give this story a 4/5 stars. I was in a slump but this took me right out and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

Just as exciting as the first book with more shifters, more court politics and rescue missions and even more secrets to be revealed that left my jaw on the floor!
You pickup with the FMC and MMC with their happy little family all back at the castle, only now they have the additions of Cat and her phoenix mate Curran and their child and Rosalie’s younger brother Devin joining them. They have a new mission, this time it’s to return to the capital area and rescue the seer that the king is now hunting because of her talking to them and aiding in their escape. They reach out to Currans father, who leads the shifters and also happens to be Rosalie’s grandfather that she just learned about. Using the reveal of this new relationship as an in, they are able to sneak into Serpens and work on a plot to rescue the seer and escape again with their lives under the kings nose with the help of some unlikely allies!
I enjoyed the rescue mission aspects of this book and the planning and also getting to spend more time following the MMCs POV but also check in with the FMC back at the castle. There was plenty of high stakes encounters and escapes by the skin of their teeth that I was nervous most of the book and then between these escapes, more and more truths about the kingdom kept unraveling that had me shocked. I really enjoyed getting to see the FMC continue to bond with her adoptive children and become protective of them and the little family they’re building and also her and her brother learning the truth about their past and starting to train because of those secrets. With one last big reveal at the end I can’t wait to see where the author takes this story next for this ever growing group! My rating 4.3/5!

Phoenix Rising ended with loose ends as our cast of characters returned home uncertain of what was to come as a result of saving Rosalie’s sister from the king’s clutches.
In Dragon Descending, we are thrust into a story of two daring escapes within the capital city of Serpens. Dangers lurked everywhere and I found myself admiring several characters, major and minor, that I didn’t expect to like or initially didn’t think of much importance. While some aspects were predictable, I was thrown off by other factors and I am once again left wanting to know how it all plays out after even more plot twists!
Dragons, phoenixes, basilisks, manticores, gryphons - if any of these creatures stoke an interest for you, they all have some level of significance in this series, mixed in with found family, royal court intrigue, black market goods, piracy, uncovered secrets, and questionable fates. While I am uncertain if the third book, Basilisk Burning, will be the final book, you will no doubt want to see how the story continues after finishing Dragon Descending. What does Lady Fate have in store for everyone?

5 out of 5 stars for THAT REVEAL ALONE. It's been a hot minute since I've had my jaw drop like that. And I've been reading for a while.
Lochlyn and Rosalie remain my favourites, and while I enjoy seeing into the heads of others, I feel Curran and Cat might have deserved their own book rather than simply be in this one as well solving their problems.
I do enjoy meeting more characters as the ever-expanding cast adds a lived-in note to Dragon Ridge.
The surprise guest star is a hoot, too! I love the comedic timing haha
The Order of the Sun's Grand Master and the King remain asses, and that's all.
With the plot thickening, and an ending like THAT (not me side-eyeing the grinning idjit thinking WHERE THE F HAVE YOU BEEN SINCE LOCHLYN WAS A LITERAL CHILD AND WHY HAVE YOU LET HIM DO IT ALL ALONE?!) I can't wait for the third book.
Ms Provost continues a captivating story with the same wit and charm that begun it, but manages to add layer upon layer that sucks you further in the more you turn the page. It's gripping and a mystery that deepens, but will hopefully get SOME answers in book 3!
I know I'll be here for them.

Dragon Descending is the second book in the Fire and Claw series by Jennifer Allis Provost. The first book, Phoenix Rising, is already available and a must have before the release date of Dragon Descending on 9/1/26.
This is a MUST READ. I devoured the book in one day.. and now I am sadly mourning the fact I have to wait until next year for the 3rd book! I digress, it was my own doing in truth, but it is THAT good!
The book picks up exactly where Phoenix Rising left off – in the middle of chaos and intrigue! Continuing to follow Lord Lochlyn and Lady Rosalei Blackmoor’s through the trials and tribulations of their beloved kingdom, the conflict in the capital, and being the last dragon shifter in Alessia. This book is full to the brim with magical/enchanting shifters, rogue enemies turned friends, lost relationships regained, tension, triumph, daring escapes, banter, and slow burn true romance.
I shall try to remain patient while I count down the days to the third book, Basilisk Burning!

August 22, 2026Dragon Descending picks up right after Phoenix Rising, with Lochlyn and Rosalie trying to move forward after everything that happened. Lochlyn is still struggling to shift into his dragon, but when the seer who helped his family escape is sentenced to death, their peaceful life at Dragon Ridge quickly comes to an end.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first. There was more focus on the kingdom’s politics, hidden secrets, and the characters’ different motivations. Some characters were exactly as terrible as I expected, while another completely surprised me. I also loved that Lochlyn and Rosalie faced everything together without unnecessary relationship drama.
It was a quick, low-spice read with dragons, found family, betrayals, and unexpected allies. I would have liked a little more detail and deeper world-building in places, but overall, this was a fun continuation of the series. I’m excited to see how everything ends in Basilisk Burning!

This book continues from the first book with a little space in between from the end of the first one. Still a good story!! Throughly enjoyed it!
We are introduced to more of the world and more of the kingdom's main city. We get to dive a little bit deeper into the politics of the world and I throughly enjoyed it!
You do get more POVs from several different characters, ones that you are excited to see more about. The MMCs, Lochlyn, Curran and the spymaster all go on a daring rescue and find out so many things while they are back in the king's city. and the sisters stay home with the children for safety.
You get to meet more characters, find out about different characters you already met and puzzle over hidden identities.
This was such a fun story and very relaxing but intense all in a good way. If you enjoy arrange marriages that work, daring rescues, shifters and hidden identities please read this book!

After reading the first book, I was optimistic but not quite sure about the direction the series would taking. This book was everything I hoped it might be and then some. The writing quality was much more consistent throughout book 2. While there are still strong relationships that I absolutely adore, the focus was more on the political and world building plot lines in this installment.
I really enjoy the different layers that are revealed as we get to know a lot of these characters more, both old and new! The twists and nuanced motivations of characters are paced very well to keep the story moving along.
Honestly, as the author builds in the context from book one as needed, I don’t feel like anything would be lost by skipping book one and jumping right into this one. I’m excited to see where the story takes us in book three!
After reading the first book, I was optimistic but not quite sure about the direction the series would taking. This book was everything I hoped it might be and then some. The writing quality was much more consistent throughout book 2. While there are still strong relationships that I absolutely adore, the focus was more on the political and world building plot lines in this installment.

I love a good dragon story, and Dragon Descending picks right up from where Phoenix Rising left off.
In book 2 of the Fire and Claw Series, we see the repercussions of the events that ended book 1. We see how the characters are moving on, healing, and coping, while being faced with new challenges - and some jaw-dropping revelations. Character you think are bad, really are (Arthus), and others are shockingly good (not going to name this one because it would spoil it!).
I enjoyed the easy read this was and it's low/no spice content. It's refreshing to read a good, well-written story. I'm looking forward to book 3, Basilisk Burning and hope we don't have to wait too long!

Dragon Descending is an amazing second installment to the Fire and Claw series!
We are introduced to so many new and lovable characters that really become the backbone of this series. therapy found family trope really comes into play and is an integral part of the story.
I loved that the author really allowed Cat to work through her trauma. It made her character very real and relatable for me and I loved her story.
I’m usually pretty good with figuring out twists, but man I didn’t see that ending coming and honestly, it made the book SO much better!!
I will 1000% be continuing this series and I’m ready for the 3rd book like yesterday!

In the Dragon Descending we start learning more of the history of each character. Lochlyn and Curran join forces with the basilisk to help save the seer from the evil king. Secrets and betrayals are learned that could unravel the kingdom and Rosalie’s/ Caterina’s father’s wish for power. I enjoy that both the males and the females are fighting to protect the families they have creating. This book had me wanting to know what happens next and my emotions were all over the place. I am fascinated with all of the magical creatures in this story.

The plot expands significantly here—we finally begin to discover the secrets surrounding the kingdom of Alessia, though it’s clear there is still much left to unfold. Plot and character-wise the book is solid and the world-building continues to expand. On a purely personal level, I didn't connect with the story 100%. It felt like a classic case of "right book, wrong time" rather than a fault of the book itself.

We jump back into Lochlyn and Rosalie's story following the events of book 1. In this story they come up against some new challenges while still dealing with previous ones. Lots of secrets revealed and new information discovered while reading Dragon Descending. There's romance, action, spies, shifters and even some betrayals. Thank-you Jennifer Allis Provost for my arc. I really enjoyed this book! The first one was all about the relationship between the MCs but this one pushed the plot forward a lot. There is so much going on and so much set up for book 3!
