This, I feel, is a series that's trying too hard. It has an interesting concept but doesn't quite know what to do with it. I do like that it's a single case in this volume and I may give it a second, but if I'm being honest, three stars may be overly generous.
Good start to a series. Sakuya Outsuki is sixteen and a high schooler—and a detective, mostly because his father is a famed immortal detective. His father handles all the big cases, but the son wants to keep a low profile so that he won’t be killed. Because he knows what it’s like to die and doesn’t like it at all, even if he comes back to life every time.
With his trusted assistant, Lilithea, who’s the brains of the operation, he sets out to find out if a movie producer is cheating on his wife on a cruise. He might look for a missing cat too, just to keep things interesting. What he doesn’t expect is finding a dead body—or dying again.
This was a fast-paced story with a slightly confusing back-story, likely because of the adaptation from the original has left things out. Sakuya was a good character; not very much like a high schooler, but maybe constant dying ages you. Lilithea was slightly annoying with her constant mistrust and jealousy attacks, even though the two aren’t a pair. The ending was a cliffhanger where Sakuya may or may not have died again. Art was good and gave me a notion of a noir aesthetic even though it wasn’t a noir story as such. Looking forward to reading more.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This is an intriguing mystery story where Sakuya has a convenient power for a detective -- he can come back to life if murdered. His aloof and grim assistant, Lilithea, adds some color and wit to the story. A couple of the female characters are overly sexualized, so that was pretty distracting at times. The cliffhanger in this volume made me want to read volume 2!
