Terrible start. The first battle already pisses me off. Does the MC totally not fear death? While in the process of almost dying (losing 4 subcores, on the 2nd Defy Death) he is still complaining that his last subcore is using magic to kill the thunder slime. Really? He's almost dead, and he still wants to make sure the thunder slime isn't damaged when he eats it.....
At least have a tiny bit of self preservation. So that the reader actually perceives a sense of danger when reading. There is no sense of danger even when the slime is on it's last legs... because the slime never ACTS like it's life is in danger.
I absolutely hate Trixie. The first quarter of this book has been so bad. The spell training has been bad, sky island has been bad. All of it so far has been so much worse than the 1st book.
Power creep, spell creep, ability creep. Getting new spells and things isn't really fun anymore. There is basically no impact. The difference between having zero spells and one spell is GIGANTIC. But the difference between having 31 spells or 30 spells is basically minimal. At some point it just doesn't matter.
Syl reaches the floating island, but things don't go quite as planned and ends up meeting a suspicious but helpful little pixie.
Syl dons their Sylvester disguise and successfully trains as an Enchanter, while accidentally noticing being seen as a human commoner is a vastly different experience. Looks like Syl was lucky to meet that specific group of humans, as most others (maybe except guild staff) seem quite hostile.
Back to the Guild as Syl it's time for the dungeon trial, and after leaving the relatively small town there were some bad rumors going around. After finding an odd group aptly called "The Misfits" it was time to start and even manages to extort a rare slime but that seemed to anger the dungeon master.
If you liked book one you'll be very happy with this, as it's a lot more of the same. There is a rough hinting at a plot but it's still too vague to call this anything more than a light, low stakes, power fantasy adventure book, to add to the ever growing pile of such titles. That said it isn't a bad one by the genre's standard, just fairly mundane and generic.
This one split into three sections with Syl's changing form and thus goals which added some welcome variety, and I was happy to find some time skips starting to appear, which was very welcome.
Some of the worlds believability started cracking in this one for me, the level ups seem absolutely arbitrary, the value of things is hand waved away as 'slimes don't care about currency' and everything always turns positive with no cost - there was at least one instance of a mess-up that cost Syl some time, but ultimately lead to learning and gaining a lot more so not really a cost, more a setback.
Ohhhh myyy! Osmosis is an immensely satisfying read. As Syl is still trying to reach gold rank in the Adventurers Guild. Soloing a local dungeon and taking on some of the harder silver quests that was offered by the guild. Once she completed those she then went on to the cloud dungeon, Glimmerock. After arriving on Glimmerock she teamed up with a Pixie she rescued. Trixie turned out to be a wonderful companion, even providing spell casting lessons. And the dungeon gave Syl even more skills and bodies to mimic. She even added a Slime to her managerie, strengthening her core! It was then time to go back, only this time mimicking a human, Sylvester and joining the Crafting Guild to become a Enchanter. So yeah grab the audiobook and enchanted, by this lovely Slime and the narrator's...
The start of this book, the 45 first minutes, are super contrived and annoying. The character just consistently does irrational and unexplainably moronic things during this time. I found it extremely off-putting. It was like an anti-hook and I quit listening for a while and considered if dropping the series wouldn't be better.
That said I enjoyed the first 100 chapters (book 1) of this story so I gave this a second chance. Turns out that while the story doesn't really manage to get back to what I'd hope for at least it doesn't get worse. The excessive plot contrivance used during those first 45 minutes in order to course correct gets mostly toned down and though there is a slow down to the overall story for reasons its not too bad. Still its not getting a 4/5 from me.
The first half of this book was a slog. The protag spent all her time in one place, and barely did anything to better herself. It was jarring compared to book one, where they kept learning.
I'm enjoying the latter half though.
I finished he book. I'm highly annoyed that the author stretched the first half so much, and listed so many stats, that the protag couldn't even step a toe into dwarf territory. We have to wait till the next book for that (that is if the author doesn't stretch things again).
I will read the sequel, but I did not like this possible filler. The sequel is supposed to have the same steam as the previous book.
Read online on the author's page, before getting my copy which I had already brought from Amazon but for some reason is taking forever. The story is nice but I really disliked the new "Trixie" character. I really prefer when Syl was traveling on their own. Still is a nice story and very entertaining. Wished they spent more time on going to more places rather than spending so much time on the Flying Island. Hopefully book 3 is better. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!
This book picks up with the first one left off. We have a fun main character , interesting adventures, solid editing, and enjoyable plotline.
The book ends in a good, place. We are left ready for book 3 , with no unreasonable cliffhangers, in all the current storylines from book 2 nicely wrapped up.
If you enjoy the first book, you should read this one . If you have not read the first book you’re gonna need to read that first to understand what’s going on.
Syl gets on the floating island and makes a new friend and gains a new power. It then assumes a new identity and learns enchanting before going back to being an elf and upgrading its adventurer rank. Along the way it gains another slime power. I’m loving the story. It’s a light read, easy going and pleasant. Fun characters. Please enjoy
Same as book 1 , the progression is awesome and love the build up of the main character coming into their own. Could do without the excessive level notifications. Later on in the series it becomes a lot
The first book was amazing. This book feels like filler garbage drawn out as much as possible to delay any actual plot. The author already knows this and should feel ashamed. What a waste of time and a disappointment.
Worth the wait for this second book and I will be excited for the 3rd book! Ugh but it so good that I read it in one go! And now I have to wait!!! Bleh
