Dragons of Safe Haven #2

A Blacksmith's Guide to Dragon-Rearing

Rate this book
Raising dragons is easier than raising a five-year-old. Probably.

Nevan never planned on becoming a dragon rider. He was perfectly content swinging a hammer in the forge—until an injured dragon rider retired to Safe Haven. Now he’s supposed to help train the island’s brand new sea dragon fire brigade. That means long days, soaked clothing, and a growing suspicion that dragons like to play matchmaker.

Franisa has her hands full keeping her bakery--and her daughter--in one piece, but she still manages to keep an eye on Nevan. After all, she’s known him since childhood—and maybe, just maybe, she’s starting to see the dragon rider in a new light.

But when sparks fly—literally and figuratively—the whole village gets involved. Between curious dragons, nosy neighbors, and one busy little girl, Nevan and Franisa might have to decide if their friendship is ready to turn into something more.

Dragons, fresh bread, and a magical island town—welcome back to Safe Haven.

Perfect for fans of Legends & Lattes, A Fellowship of Bakers & Magic, and Jane Austen's Dragons--the kind of fantasy that smells faintly of woodsmoke and warm cinnamon rolls.

Here be Dragons!

Holy Dragons! Shades of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders are dancing in my head. What a fabulous book Julia Huni has created. I felt so at home on the mountain top fastness where the water dragons adopt the people and the Elf King sneaks around doing magic.

I clearly remember feeling the same way some 45 years ago when I first read Anne McCaffrey. Imagine my happiness to find another series by a writer I already admire.

I'm pretty sure I've expressed my feelings about this series before but I had to just rave again. Get started reading now, and get your kids involved. This is a winner for all ages.

it drags a bit without the complexity of the characters from the first book but still a good tale

Rating: 4⭐️

Not quite sure how you would categorize this, a cozy dragon fantasy? With a no spice romance aspect to it?

It has many interesting and well thought out elements to it, ones I really found intriguing but somehow got lost in the narrative here.

The first book revealed the existence of this mysterious island where multiple species coexisted peacefully between warring magical countries, hidden by fae magic behind barriers none could penetrate unless they were fated to. Like a dying “retired” war witch from one country and an equally retired dragon rider soldier from the opposing side, whose life he feels is over, betrayed by his king. Both of whom find themselves on the island, and eventually become friends then wedded partners. From enemies to lovers.

It’s was a great tale that was made better by the discovery of sea dragons.

Huni’s story contains a great deal of detailed backstory on the countries at war, war witches, dragon riders, the new king, the island’s political system, and the other beings who make up the community there . And the rules I mean it’s a lot. Mostly in the first book.

But here it’s Nevan and Franisa Hearthwell’s story. Each one was a secondary character before, but they are, primarily due to Nevan becoming a dragon rider, into the forefront. It’s a romantic story but they don’t have much time for that to develop. It’s the community and friends who are telling each of them about how the other is feeling. Plus there’s an entire “fake engagement “ aspect to this story that launches their romance.

It’s too much “as told to” to be believable. Where the first relationship between William and Cala was and is remains totally credible. They are so well established and intriguing people.

The dragons element is reduced down to one important one and that’s Starlight. She’s developing into an amazing character. There appears to be a new element, the wounded fire dragon from William’s country and with one of his former unit squadron members. Unfortunately right now, that person is just a one dimensional character. Hopefully, he’ll grow some or this aspect of the series will end up very one note coded.

I’m looking forward to seeing where this author goes next with all these characters and storylines. A definite recommendation.

Wonderful fantasy adventure with romance

And there's humor, dragons, family, surprises, and a complicated community of beings. Koni is a gem. Nevan and Fanisha are a believable and loveable couple. Starlight is the dragon we all want to partner. The story is thrilling, fun, imaginative, and well-written. I laughed out loud and thoroughly enjoyed Dragon-Rearing.

The small town. The characters. The dragons. The plot. All of it was written well. The romance left me wanting more though. So much more. I wish the main characters had more time to shine.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

I got an ARC of this book on Thursday, read it Friday evening and Saturday, so it is time to write up a review before another busy week at work.

Since this is the second book of the (hopefully lengthy) series, I recommend you go find A Dragon Riders Guide to Retirement and read it before starting this one, although I also think you will be fine if you don't. This book returns to the Isle of Safe Haven, and all the main characters are back, along with a few of the minor characters as well. If you read the last book, you can probably guess that this story is about the blacksmith / dragon rider Nevan.

He has always had a bit of a crush on the baker that lives nearby, but it hasn't worked out for him that well. A flashback of taking her to see the dragon hatching ground didn't help much, at all, but when her young son gets into a bit of pickle because he's growing up and his father passed, she has to do something about it. Unfortunately it involves family dynamics, and that starts fanning old flames again. But as you might expect from a fun read, (spoiler alert) it all works out in the end.

The only nit I have to pick with this book is extremely minor. In the front of the book is a map of the town with some numbers on it... but nowhere did I see anything that told me what the numbers meant. I will assume they are to tell me where the city hall, bakery, blacksmith, etc. are located, but I am still at a loss to know exactly where things are in the town. Like I said, super minor nit-picky stuff that didn't impact my enjoyment of the book, at all, but I do kind of wish there was a legend for the map.

I am also looking forward to that little line at the end of the book where the author lists all the other titles they have written, and it would appear that A Rider's Guild to Dragon Healing will be released this year, and I suspect I know which "minor" character in these two books will be the subject of that one. So All I can say about that one is "Hurry up and finish it, I'm already waiting!"

Edit: I must have been in way too much of a rush to read this… the author just told me the legend for the map is on the page before it, and yup there it is. I think I rushed past it thinking it was the table of contents, which is on the page after the map… I guess I really am just that stupid. Sorry it ended up disparaging the book, even if it was only a tiny bit.

Sea Dragons help in firefighting and promoting marriage - 5 stars

In this entertaining story, sea dragons become proficient in communicating with selected humans and work to achieve common goals. Sea Dragons (smaller sized than War Dragons) had been flying and playing in the water surrounding the town of Safe Haven. After a Dragon Master from a war-base town came to Safe harbor, the urge to domesticate or at least make friends with the local dragons became an activity to possibly protect the town from fires. Bucket brigades were slow and could not supply enough water quickly. The Dragon Masters training brought the community together after the (sea) dragons with human fliers extinguishing a barn fire by delivering water to put out the flames.

The small community of Safe Haven had separate communities of humans, dwarfs, giants, and elves. The people managed to interact for trade and commerce but seldom socialized with other groups. For the most part, people lived with their own kind. The people of mixed parentage were the town's leaders, providing a backdrop for a moralistic adventure.

The craftspeople served everyone. The town only had one baker, one butcher, one blacksmith, and a few carpenters. There were two pubs which attracted visiting seafarers as well as locals. Traditional male heads of clans tried to maintain their historic order. Some women were able to establish businesses. The woman who ran the bakery, Franisa, had two children before her husband died in a freak storm.

A young man, Nevan, developed a relationship with a fledgling Sea Dragon. An infatuation from early school years was rekindled, becoming a major part of the story. I encourage you to let your imagination join in the fun in this tale.

A Blacksmith’s Guide to Dragon Rearing - By Julia Huni

In Book Two of the Dragons of Safe Haven Series, we follow the adventures of Nevan and Franisa, who grew up across the street from each other. Franisa is a widow with two young children, and owns and runs the town bakery, like her parents before her. Five years her junior, Nevan has worshiped her from afar. Nevan is a blacksmith by trade, but also a handyman as well. You can probably guess how this story is going to end, but I will not be providing any spoilers here.
This book is filled with a diverse cast of elves, dwarves, giants, pixies, and of course, dragons! The dragons are the real stars here, as we learn more about them and their abilities. Nevan is one of the dragon riders, and is learning to control his dragon, Starlight.
Others will undoubtably give a more detailed and better written synopsis than I can; but I can and do think this is a book you should not miss. It is not necessary to read the first book “A Dragon Rider’s Guide to Retirement”, but in doing so, you will have a better overall understanding of the world this book inhabits.
This book is well written (as are all of Julia’s books), and humorous throughout. Even though you can see some things coming a mile away, there are plenty of surprises along the way to keep it interesting. I like the way the author writes (I have all of her Sci-Fi books), and even though Romantic Fantasy is not normally my cup of tea, I have found this series very enjoyable and am looking forward to Book Three of the series.
I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving a free copy of this book.

So far, I have read, and loved, every book this author has written (whether as Julia or Lia Huni); this one is no exception. Her protagonists are believable, relatable, and likable; the storylines have enough unexpected developments not to be boring without being stretched beyond belief, and the endings leave you feeling comfortable - not frustrated or anxious - while still wanting more. The only negative thing I can say is that her books play havoc with my time management: as soon as I get my hands on a new book, I want to read it straightaway and straight through!
As for this book in particular, if you haven’t already read the first book in the series, I highly recommend you do so before starting this one. Although it’s not absolutely necessary, that does provide a good deal more background information and context concerning the people, dragons, and world of Safe Haven (while also being a great story in its own right). It had been awhile since I read the first book in this series (annoyingly, when you start a series that is not yet complete, it is necessary to give the author enough time to write the next one…), so it took me a couple of chapters to get re-immersed in Safe Haven, attach the names to the characters from the first book, and so on. Ultimately, however, it was only a minor hiccup.
Whether you’re a fan of dragons and their riders (Anne McCaffrey’s Dragons of Pern, for example), fantasy combined with a bit of romance, or Julia Huni’s writing, I heartily recommend you give this book a try.

Title: A Blacksmith’s Guide To Dragon Training
Series: Dragons of Safe Haven (Book 2)
Author: Julia Huni
Genre: Cozy Fantasy
Rating: 4.5 ⭐️

A whimsical little escape full of charm, heart, and fantastical fun.

This was such a fun and fantastical read! Julia Huni created a world that felt imaginative, cozy, and full of charm, and I loved getting swept away in it. From the very beginning, this story kept me entertained and made it easy to settle in and enjoy every page.

What I loved most was how fun this book was. Even when the story brought challenges, there was still a lightness and warmth to it that made the whole reading experience feel comforting and enjoyable. It had that lovely kind of magic that pulls you out of the everyday and drops you into a world that feels adventurous, whimsical, and just plain delightful.

I also appreciated the depth woven into the story. Beneath the fantastical elements, there was heart, charm, and a strong sense of wonder that kept me turning the pages. This was the kind of book that reminded me how refreshing it is to read something that feels both entertaining and enchanting at the same time.

Sometimes you really just need a story that lets you escape for a while, and this one absolutely did that for me. A magical, enjoyable read that left me smiling.

I’m so grateful to have received an ARC copy from the Julia Huni. All opinions and thoughts are my own.

Safe Haven now has its first dragon riders and now the fire brigade promised needs to begin training. William, Cala and Koni remain integral to the story but for this book we follow the third dragon rider, Nevan. His dragon is spirited and doesn’t always follow instructions, his family proud of the achievements but Nevan has long had his eye and heart captured by the baker Franisa. So we learn of Franisa’s family and struggles and the beautifully gentle way that Nevan offers support and so much more to her.
Julia has crafted a joyous read with fun as Nevan is repeatedly dunked in the sea by his dragon, team work as the first fire is successfully extinguished and a wonderful community that values the shared safety of their home on the island. Can this community welcome another outsider when an injured war dragon and his rider need haven?
Truly enjoyed this book and will no doubt reread. This is an independent review after receiving an ARC version.

Raising dragons is easier than raising a five-year-old. Probably.

Well, that is the first sentence of the intro on Amazon.Com for this truly excellent second book of the series. Don't believe it. Starlight, the dragon, is MUCH worse than the typical 5-year old. More like a precocious 2-year-old. Horror.

But, somehow, Starlight is a wonderful and productive part of the society of Dragon Riders. Much more important than I would have originally thought.

And all that Hand Fasting, WOW! Don't know what a Hand Fasting is, well read about it. Fascinating. So many of the things we moderns grew up with are ancient in origin. But I think that somehow we lost a lot of the import of those old customs and traditions.

A lovely take on an old story, many fine moments, and memorable scenes to remember for years.

Now, where is that THIRD book? Why does it take so long for the good books to come out?

Beautiful second instalment

A Blacksmith’s Guide to Dragon Rearing is the second in the Dragon’s of Save Haven series, but works quite well standalone although the principal cast of people, dragons and other magical ilk will be familiar to those who’ve read the first. Nevan is a small self-effacing giant, runt of the litter, and the eponymous blacksmith on the way to continuing in the family business when a dragon intervenes (that’s the recap). Now he has to rear his dragon, train the would be water dragon fire brigade of Safe Haven, while protecting the woman he loves and her family: she’s happy to have his friendship and help, but is not interested in more.

So once again we have a dragon story without the traditional battles - except against the elements, and particularly fire. We have a low key romance with a happy ending but an unexpected middle. We have an enjoyable book recommended for dragon lovers of all ages.

Nevan is really in two relationships here, and both are amazing! I liked seeing his personal growth and his long-lasting care for Franisa, even when she was giving him attitude. And, of course, seeing her finally soften to him and start to trust him.
Watching Nevan and Starlight's relationship deepen and discovering their internal connection to the surprise of everyone else was so lovely. I didn't expect this pairing to be the one I fell in love with, but there you go.
This is a clean book with light romantic elements but the focus is really on getting the dragons trained. And getting to see the dragons and their riders in action as firefighters was super cool!
This can be read alone, but you really don't want to miss out on how the dragons became part of the fire-fighting team. I highly recommend reading Book 1 first! It's also a 5-star read!

This author did not disappoint! When I read the Dragonriders Guide to Retirement I said I hoped it was the first in a series! and this book, which I received as an ARC is a charming and entertaining addition. The characters from the previous book re-appear but this time Nevan takes the lead, sort-of, Starlight, the sea dragon he paired with gives him a run for his money! This gentle fantasy is a perfect antidote to real world events. It is sweet, also featuring a single mom with 2 interesting children, who is challenged by her in-laws and others in the community as to the correct way to bring up the children, resolving her problems involves a solution she isn't sure she wants! I look forward to the next book in the series.... and hope it isn't the last!

A Blacksmith's Guide to Dragon-Rearing by Julia Huni
Nevan never planned on becoming a dragon rider...

A bit of a different feel from the fast paced fantasy I usually read but this one was so cozy and fun. It's slower paced but in a good way that allowed me to connect with all the characters. Great range of personalities! It's also unique in that the FMC is a widow with two kids and the MMC is five years younger. So I enjoyed that as well. I would definitely like to continue the series and plan on going back to read book 1! Would recommend!

Genre: Cozy fantasy (no spice)
Book 2 in Dragons of Safe Haven series (can be read as a standalone)
Favorite character: Starlight (Nevan's dragon)
Favorite part: the way Starlight communicated
4.5⭐

Sea dragons show new abilities

This is the story of Nevan, Franisa, and an exceptional young dragon named Starlight. The story engaged me right away, and I was engrossed until the end. Nevan discovers new depths to the sea dragons, and there are revelations of more powers for the Elven mayor and other developments that enrich the world of the sea dragons. The characters from the first book are present, along with some surprise characters from that book, but the story revolves around Franisa, Nevan, and Starlight. The writing is fun and humorous. I highly recommend this book, even if you aren’t fond of fantasy. I can’t wait for the next installment.

This was a nice, quick cozy read. It was fun to come back and see the characters of Safe Haven. Nothing really high stakes and expand on the world just a little more. The main characters themselves are probably the least interesting thing about the story, it's really the surrounding characters and the tid bits you get about them. So the book feels more like it's setting up for more interesting characters in the future. There isn't really any conflict in the book, the little conflict it does have is resolved quickly or hardly touched upon.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series since the characters and their conflicts sound more interesting with their complex history.

I love this new Safe Haven adventure!

Sea dragon Starlight and half-giant Nevan make an excellent, if unconventional (sorry, William!), firefighting team. I simply adore the young dragon’s playful personality, and I loved to see how the bond between her and Nevan grew even stronger over time.

Since I also like a good marriage-of-(in-)convenience tale, the slow-burn romance between Nevan and his longtime crush Franisa warmed my heart. (To be fair, Franisa’s kids Enrich and Eloise did plenty of heart-warming, too. :) )

Can’t wait for the next one!

This is the second book in the series and it continues where the first one left off. This book continues to build out the locale and the people who live there. There is a lot a good character development and dragon development (mainly Starlight).

This is a fun, easy, read, with nice plot lines that keep you moving through the story. I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first one in the series and am looking forward to the third book.

Thoroughly enjoyed the book, even more than the first book of the series. Nevan the former blacksmith apprentice sets out to win the love of Francisa, the baker. She is a widow with two young children and involves Nevan in a fake betrothal after a confrontation with her former father-in-law. Unknown to her, Nevan has loved her from afar for years and wants to make the betrothal a reality. His dragon Starlight, is a mischievous character and she causes mayhem and trouble throughout.

If you're reading this review, you've most likely read the author's blurb. It raises several question:

- Will anything come of the relationship between shy Nevan and independent Franisa?
- How well-trained are the dragons for fighting fires when one breaks out?
- What will become of the injured war dragon? What kind of reception will he and his rider find in Safe Harbor?

Don't ask the book's AI! Read the book for yourself; it will be worth the time.

Adorable! Engaging! The perfect book to read while curled up under a warm blanket with tea and cookies. I loved the playful interaction between Nevan and his dragon, Starlight. And watching Fransia and Nevan grow into full love was heartwarming. I couldn’t put it down, even when I was supposed to be packing for our move. I loved it and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Welcome back to Safe Harbor! Home of magic, intrigue, romance, and dragons. The adventure continues with the dragon riders trying to learn how to train the sea dragons to act as a fire brigade for the town. All-in-all a satisfying read. It is the second volume in a series, but can be read by itself.

A very nice read

My taste in books has changed over the years. I'm no longer drawn to stories about fighting ultimate evil or saving a country/world/universe. I much prefer stories like this, where character development and their daily lives are more important than defeating the next bad guy.

Book 2 in the series

Neven is a blacksmith and Franisa is a bakery owner. They have known each other since they were children but she is five years older than he is so she still thinks of him as being a kid. He becomes a respected dragon rider and firefighter in the town and she starts to take notice. A great story.

childhood crush and he’s younger

So sweet! The characters were perfect, he is 23 with a high stakes job learning to be an appreciated working adult. She’s 28, widowed, two kids, a working bakery owner. He has had a crush on her forever while she is a realist trying to live her life.

Add in nosy friends, friendly dragons and a mayor from somewhere else and it’s a very fun story.

This was cute, but I didn't like it as much as the first book. The first book centered on the retired characters (and she has magical hot flashes! Lol), but this story was focused on younger side characters from the first book.

Overall, I enjoyed this cozy fantasy, but it was more of a standard romance, lacking the high-stakes conflict of the first book.

The dragons were still fun. 😀
