Cape Noire.
A city full of life, love, wealth, poverty, violence, and death.
How is it different from many other real or fictional cities littered across the literary landscape?
This one has an undead avenger.
Brother Bones!
Tall, draped in a worn, black overcoat, wearing a beat up slouch hat, wielding twin silver plated .45 automatics, and face hidden behind a skull-like porcelain mask, this is one hero who can't stay dead.
Destiny demands that he avenge the innocent.
And he does it, ably supported by some extremely believable and likeable characters.
This book contains some of his exploits, nicely bracketed by a prologue & epilogue, to connect all the dots.
What have we got here?
(*) Threads: Prologue
1. The Butcher's Festival: we meet an intriguing character for the first time: Pulptress!
2. The Bruiser From Bavaria: this story gives rise to a major story arc that's likely to dominate this universe in future.
3. The Plastic Army: silly, yet sensual and tragic.
4. The Lady in Red: the city got another avenger!
5. The Godless: another painful, grim, dark story, with a glimmer of redemption in the horizon.
(*) Threads: Epilogue
I sincerely hope that Ron Fortier and other stalwarts heralding the course of new pulp keep the stories coming in this vein.
We need Brother Bones, and his not-so-merry men & women.
Desperately.

Highly Recommended.

Brother Bones: Tapestry of Blood by Ron Fortier and narrated by J. Scott Bennett is an action-packed book with a variety of characters and old noir style. Def must listen! Not sure what I can say other reviews haven’t, so if you’re reading the summary/reviews and are wondering if you should listen to this, the answer is yes.

The narrator, J. Scott Bennett, shines in this one. He was meant to voice this series, for reals.

*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!

The first story, "The Butcher's Festival," features a team-up with The Pulptress, which is a bit confusing since the Brother Bones stories seem to be set in the 1930s and The Pulptress stories are set in the 2010s. It's a three-star tale. The rest of the stories are in the four- and five-star range. The origin stories of Sister Blood are classics. Atmosphere, psychological complexity, and action are all top-notch. As usual, there are numerous editing problems that I'm learning to ignore.

( Format : Audiobook )"Ha, ha, ha. Nothing can save me now.""
The 'Dragon' has gone but Cape Noire still has need of Brother Jones, the Undead Avenger, as this series of stories reveal. With his bizarre humour and stranger tales, Ron Fortier again throws the reader into the midst of a very colourful procession of characters, from Father O'Malley and alter boy, Billy, and Sally Page the reporter (possibly the sanest of them all), through gang boss, Peter Malone and his murderous brother, Arnold, to cigarette girl, Laura and her card playing boy friend, Bobby, who also just happens to be chauffeur, helper and housemate to Brother Bones himself. A kaleidoscope of colourful characters who are often not quite what they seem. Or else they are ...

J.Scott Bennett's interpretative performance brings the whole world to life, giving just enough sinister undertone to his reading to embue a tension without distracting from the comedy.

Good, riotous fun with just the right touch of evil. This is the second Brother Bones book I have heard and, although not quite as enthralling as it's predecessor, it was a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Recommended.
My thanks to the right's holder for gifting me a copy of Tapestry of Blood, via Audiobook Boom.

Eventhough this is a Brother Bones anthology, it seems like Ron Fortier is having trouble coming to grips with the two-dimensionality of Brother Bones as a character. Rather than let this detract from his writing, he takes the opportunity to expand Cape Noir and the citizens within. There's one new "hero" in particular who deserves her own series, in my opinion. Those who've read the book already know about whom I'm talking, and the rest of you will just have to read the book and find out. I won't ruin the coolness.

As far as I know, this is the latest Brother Bones book. It leaves things open for a sequel, and I hope we get one. I love Cape Noir, and the heroes who've swornto protect it. If you enjoy the darker depictions of Batman and Gotham City, I highly recommend the Brother Bones series, and Tapestry of Blood in particular. There's much to discovou here, and much to enjoy.

I never thought I would be a fan of this genre (is it pulp fiction?), and yet I have immensely enjoyed each book I have listened to in the Brother Bones series. It combines gritty crime, a supernatural avenger, interesting characters, and a great story. I listened to the Audible audio version narrated by J. Scott Bennett, and his narration is great. I actively search out books that he narrates, and I have never once been disappointed with his performance. I'm looking forward to any future books in this series. If you like noir, crime fiction, or tales of vengeance, I highly recommend this book.
