“Quick do you think a judge would let me off for murder if I tell him that it was the health inspector who has a vendetta against me?”

It’s a question Lucas never thought he’d have to ask when he became the owner of a food truck. And that pisses him off more considering he has enough in his life to deal with.

He’s blind.
He’s a virgin.
And the people he keeps falling for never seem to want him back.

So when this grumpy shell of a man has made it his mission to make Lucas’s life miserable, Lucas intends to fight back.
With his words. Mean ones. Ones that might make a grown man cry.

Unfortunately, there’s more to Frankie’s story than Lucas realizes, and the more he gets to know this complicated single dad, the more he starts to feel the familiar stirrings of an impossible crush.

Frankie is almost twice his age, his life is a chaotic mess, and Lucas isn’t exactly relationship material. But the longer they stay in each other’s orbit, the more Lucas realizes that this could be it. And soon enough he decides he’s not going to stop until he’s gotten his hard earned happily ever after.

Winning You is the seventh book in the single dad Words We Never Said series. It’s an enemies to lovers, age gap romance featuring a brow-beaten, exhausted single caregiver who wants nothing more than to find some peace, a nerdy, mouthy, autistic chef who wants to be loved the way he’s capable of loving, heaps of unsolicited advice, first times, bad dates that turn into very good dates, and a steamy, swoony happily ever after.

There’s nothing quite like the disappointment of a great book with a bad ending. I finished this so quickly because I was loving the story and the writing. The relationship was so genuine and loving, and the characters were easy to like and empathize with. I was charmed, I even genuinely chuckled a couple times, and the intimate scenes were hot but also built on an emotional connection, even before they became ‘more’.

Then we got to the final chapter, and it felt like the author couldn’t be bothered to finish it properly. So much of the book had been building toward Frankie meeting Lucas’ dads – understandable because of the large age gap. I had been waiting for this the entire book, only for it to be skipped entirely and summed up in about two sentences after the fact. No on-page meeting between Frankie and the dads, and no POV from Frankie after it happens either, so we don't get to feel or interpret the meeting from how he experienced it. If it hadn’t happened at 95% I would have DNFd on principle. Don't use an important moment in the main characters' story to set up a different character's book, I beg.

I was (clearly) already annoyed at this point, and then we didn't get an epilogue either, which is a criminal offense in most books in my opinion, especially if the main story ends abruptly.

I’m not one who cares whether or not a couple is versatile or don't switch in the bedroom, but if the characters are talking about switching several times and hinting at it happening 'very soon', then I’ll be expecting that to happen on page, and that not happening just added to the feeling that the author reached a point where they couldn’t be bothered to finish the story properly.

I loved most of this so much, so I’m so disappointed with the feeling I’m left with after finishing.

“Oh, princess, you are really fucking pretty when you beg, but you don’t have to. I’m all yours.”

I would watch a sunset for hours if I had the chance to, but I don’t.” “So you watch me?” Frankie let his lips rest against Lucas’s jaw, and he smiled. “So I watch you. I hope that’s okay.”

Boyfriend. He’d been someone’s husband once, but for some reason, being Lucas’s boyfriend felt more powerful.

How can you fumble the end of such a sweet and swoony story?? Ugh.

I love Lucas and his sass! The way he puts people in their place when they treat him weirdly for being blind is always epic.

Frankie was interesting and had a lot going on, but the way he cared for Lucas was so sweet. Despite the huge age gap they fit so well together.

I will complain again and say that I just don't feel like we get enough of the couples in this series once they're in the relationship officially. There's always so much build up which is always a great read, but I prefer also getting some page time where the couple are settled.

What happened to Gage was horrific, and the friendship between him and Lucas is amazing. Looking forward to seeing Gage get a well deserved HEA.

Omg, EM Lindsey is a superlative talented author. I don’t think I’ve read anything by them that hasn’t been exceptional, always rich emotional story telling with razor sharp character povs that pull you into a world that’s difficult to abandon once it’s done. Their themes of found family, mental health rep, disability rep, sexuality and gender rep and essentially strong rooted acceptance build a world that always more positive than the one we live in, where we can catch glimpses of ourselves and feel seen and feel hopeful.

Lucas and Frankie’s story is rooted in all this and more and read like a breeze. I would put it at the lower end of the angst and devastation spectrum which EM Lindsey is a master at crossing but it is in no way less emotional, lots lovely feelings and beautiful hot chemistry tying these two together.

As always I absolutely loved the characters, Lucas stole my heart - what a phenomenal man, a chef in a good truck, a rocky start with his family but his foundation is there, so funny and wild and dramatic but with such a warm heart , blind and autistic navigating the world fearlessly. He captivates Frankie from the start who looses his marbles when he meets him, that first chapter with a ton of faux pas was absolutely hilarious. That’s the other thing. This book is snort out loud funny in parts and makes you cry (gage 😭) in others. I loved it so much

Coming back to Frankie, what an absolutely stellar man! Like I’m in love, totally cooked. The way he has stood up for his siblings I am floored. Also he is so hot. The way he and Lucas are is absolute fire (I mean Lucas is a virgin but it isn’t like everything goes into the unbelievable realm - the way the first times are depicted is totally hot)

I think what always strikes me is the empathy with which EM Lindsey writes, it’s an immersive experience not a token tick mark and it’s gripping and wonderful and the story is always richer for it.

Read this if you want to read swoooony romantic love story between a poet and his princess, with a plethora of stellar characters forming a found family, and an evil ex who is vanquished.

I can’t wait to read Gage’s story, I need him to get his HEA, is it with Fallon?

I just want to shout from the rooftops how much I adored this book, this was just everything I wanted but also so much more at the same time.

Look, it’s no surprise how much I loved this book, it included all of my favourite things: a first meeting that goes badly and then they have to work extra hard to get a better opinion of each other, two characters that are a little overwhelmed by their current life events and think that they don’t have time for a relationship but then they start hanging out together more and more and realize that what they have is worth making time for, characters that have a lot of jagged pieces and that end up creating a soft place to land for each other and a ton of comfort and sweet and gentle moments.

I loved Lucas and Frankie together more than most things in the world, they just made the best pair. All their interactions were just so fun and swoony I kept grinning at my kindle. This book was just so soft and romantic in all the little ways that they took care of each other and I could not get enough of it.

My favorite of the series so far! (Though I know Gage and Fallon are going to give it a run for their money). I've been obsessed with Lucas since Bronx and Monty's book. He's snarky, funny, smart, and caring, but being in his head, he's also lonely, introspective, and just so in need for love. And Frankie stole my heart from page 1. I related to his awkwardness so so much and also his deep need to care for his family while not feeling like he had it together at all. I just loved their dynamic, their love, everything!! Plus the setup for Gage's book?? YES.

I stayed up way too late because I couldn't put this one down, I just loved Lucas and Frankie together!

While Lucas and Frankie didn't have the best start, it certainly made for a captivating and interesting beginning of a romance. I loved seeing them connect, and their story was full of swoony and heartfelt moments. It was great getting to see more of Lucas but also Gage, as they'd been more in the background in the previous books.

I adored Lucas' humour and he was just such a chaos gremlin in general. He and Frankie were the kind of couple that doesn't seem like they should fit together, but they were truly perfect for one another. I felt like Frankie saw past a lot of Lucas' facades and walls, and had a sense of the vulnerability hiding there. There were a lot of emotions in their story, and E.M. Lindsey had me both laughing out loud and sobbing while reading this one.

It was cute to see Frankie and Lucas taking care of each other, I loved how Lucas was always trying to keep Frankie and Elodie fed. Frankie was also mindful of the fact that he was Lucas' first in a lot of ways, and he was a little hesitant at their age gap at times. The romance and swoon factor was set to high, and the chemistry between Lucas and Frankie was definitely sizzling hot!

Winning You was another fantastic addition to this series - I'm pretty sure this is my favourite series by E.M. Lindsey so far! I'm loving this found family and swoony romances! I can't wait for Gage's story, even if it's going to break my heart. I honestly had to take a short break after him telling Lucas what was going on with him, just absolutely devastating.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, and these are my honest thoughts and opinions.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Winning You is the seventh book in E.M. Lindsey’s Words We Never Said series about single dads and found family. This book jumps the series ahead a little in time to give us Lucas’ story, as he was an older teen in the prior books and is now all grown up and ready for his own love story. Lucas has been one of my favorite side characters in the series, as I love his snark and banter. So I was super excited that Lindsey was extending the series to feature Lucas (and his best friend, Gage, will be getting a book as well).

I really love this series so much and am so glad that Lindsey decided to add two books featuring the older teens who have now turned into adults exploring their own relationships. I enjoyed this story a lot and am very much looking forward to seeing Gage find his happy ending as well.

Frankie is a health inspector and he is about 42. His parents were neglectful, abusive, and addicts. He took custody of his two younger brothers when he was 24 because of his parents' issues. 4 years ago, he was married to an a******, and CPS called him to tell him that his mother had given birth to a baby with birth defects because of her addiction and abuse, and that the mother was being charged. Frankie decided to adopt his sister and it ended his marriage. He's been struggling with the challenges that come along with parenting a visually impaired child with cerebral palsy and some other challenges. His brothers help though.

One day while on the job, Frankie comes across a blind autistic food truck owner that he has to inspect. Lucas is about 22 years old, and he struggles with being accepted by people outside of his family. He's a virgin and reluctantly so. Frankie is accidentally ableist and ticks Lucas off, and then they find out that they are new neighbors. Frankie makes it up to Lucas, and they start spending some time together and decide to hook up, they try to keep it just friends with benefits but they both really like each other and it quickly becomes more. But they have some conflict because Frankie's brother's ex is abusive and making trouble and they need to come out with their relationship to Lucas's family and it might be disapproved because of their age gap.

So to start off my comments on the book, I have to say I usually read the trigger warnings and I'm very picky about picking books that I can emotionally handle at the time. But the trigger warnings were in a place at the start of the book that I did not see because of the font size / did not expect them to be. I started reading this towards the end of the evening yesterday and I didn't have time to finish it, and I was not prepared for all the triggering situations in it and I literally didn't sleep well because it weighed on me. So definitely mind your triggers, this book was heavy. It hurt my heart a lot.

There were some things I liked, and some things I didn't like about this book. I did think that Frankie and Lucas were uniquely well suited for each other. They fit into each other's nooks and crannies, they were what the other person needed and wanted in a partner. So they were a good couple. But I thought that they fell in love too quickly, it was unrealistic how they were feeling so serious towards each other within like a week or two of meeting.

I didn't like the plot line of Frankie not being able to cook. He's a 42-year-old man who has raised children since he was 24. He's had to manage to feed them and himself ever since. It's not like it would have been fine for him to make Fenton and Fallon live off of takeout all those years and only now Frankie wood start to feel guilty about not properly nourishing Elodie. I just didn't find it believable, especially with him being a health inspector, he would have more of an appreciation about food quality and nutrition.

Some notable moments:

"“Have fun getting that one to bed tonight.” “Just be glad you don’t live directly next door. All you’d hear is her cackling and me sobbing into my pillow as I eat her leftover Cheerios she spilled on the floor.”"

"“And you love your family—double hot. You don’t treat me like I’m some sad, hyper little squirrel who needs to be taken care of and hand-fed like I’m some kind of pet. That makes me feel good.” Frankie closed his eyes. “I don’t know what to say to all that. It…I think it makes me want to punch people.”"

"Lucas pulled away from Bronx and turned his head toward his other parent. “Dad?” “Yes?” Monty always sounded quietly thrilled whenever Lucas called him that. “If someone did this to you, I wouldn’t say anything. I would just quietly go over to their house, board up their windows, then light their house on fire.”"

*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.

**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

E.M. Lindsey gave Lucas the sweet HEA he deserved.
We met him in the previous books of the series and we already know a lot about him: his blindness and his autism were never an insurmountable wall for him, they just made him more determined to find his own spot in the world and to realise his dreams.
In this book is happily working in his food truck, all by himself, gaining experience and saving money for his future project. He also moved out from Bronx and Monty's home and he lives alone in a very well organised apartment. His life is not perfect, obstacles are thrown at him every second, but Lucas is strong and resilient and he doesn't allow other people to treat him like he's an inconvenience or like he's not an adult able to take care of himself or his job.

That's why his first encounter with Frankie doesn't go well at all. Frankie is unaware of Lucas' blindness, at first, and when he realises Lucas can't see, he keeps patronising him and saying all the wrong things.

Frankie's life is chaos: he's about to adopt his little sister, whom he has been taking care of since she was an infant. Little Elodie has cerebral palsy and cortical blindness and Frankie has upended his life for her. He's always put his younger brothers and sister first, he tried hard to give them what their mother never could, he gave them love and stability, even if it cost him his marriage.

Frankie and Lucas' friendship begins on tiptoe, they start to hang out together just as friendly neighbours, but after the first evening on Frankie's couch, when they openly talk about their own challenges, they both feel so at ease, so safe in each other arms that they cannot deny the attraction the's building between them.

This author is always an expert in pouring all the feelings into the physical scenes and this time they made no exception: I found it particularly intense the scenes told from Lucas POV because he can't see what's happening around him, but he feels Frankie's love through his touches and his words.

A thing I particularly loved about this story is how understanding and respectful Frankie is about Lucas and Gage's relationship: they're not brothers nor lovers, but they are platonic soulmates and Frankie is not worried or scared about how much love for Gage is in Lucas' heart.

There's drama happening with Frankie's brother that hits Lucas too and I'm a little bummed that we don't know how things developed on that side of the story.
We also finally get to know what happened to Gage in college that made him come back to his dad and family and it's awful: his book will be hard to read, but I'm confident the author will flood him with all the love.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

So I'm in love with this. Sheesh, I sobbed sad tears, happy tears, hurt tears, ugh this whole series hurts my heart but also puts it back together again.

They all have been through so much. Then … they find love, and family, and friendship, EEK my heart, boy did I cry in this one.

Also, who is joining the club with me to protect Lucas, Gage and Fallon at all costs.

Lucas is literally everything. I have been waiting for his story.

Frankie and Lucas meet at a not so meet cute lol then it turns to friendship, camaraderie against the bullies? Then lovers.

“Because, if he was being honest with himself, he was very, very close to pulling back his sleeve and showing his entire heart.”

This was so sweet, swoony and beautiful. This series is so emotional for me. I love them all so much.

“There’s a unicorn out there for me, I’m sure, but I haven’t found him yet.”

They were so perfect for each other. This whole series has been incredible that way, all the hurt, pain and crappy people in the world then that one person finds then and its magic and beautiful joy and bliss. The world is just brighter.

I am obsessed with how protective the found family vibes are. Literally light the world on fire for each other, just don't tell Adelle lol

Ugh sweet Lucas just wanted to be loved, to be accepted, to just be touched, he has been through so much, met so many crappy people, Frankie was perfect for him. They were incredible, their intimacy was so beautiful.

“You feel like home, princess. Like you are my home.”

I just can’t. This was everything.

I need to know about Fallon and Gage desperately.

Gage needs his hea, sheesh my heart.

I'm in love with this series and all these incredible people.

Lucas has been my favorite person in this series and his book (and Gages) was my most anticipated.

EM Lindsey’s autism representation is first of all, own voice, but they ALSO always have a sensitivity reader (a fact I LOVE) & their representation is always my favorite. I love their neurodivergent MCs in general but they have several autistic MCs and ALL OF THEM ARE DIFFERENT. This author has mastered the art of non-monolithic representation which shouldn’t be the standard but it really is. So while I can’t speak to the author disability rep, for there is always is in their books, I can speak to the care they take with neurodiverse, specifically in this case autism, rep… and say they are the golden standard. While key characteristics are there, such as common stims like hand flapping or rocking, literal communication, and blunt sense of humor, it never outshines the characters individualized support needs, traits, personality, or unique voice.

This is something that is HARD to come by.

Now, moving along.

A lot of this book was dedicated to Gage’s story but I didn’t mind bc if I had to go another book without knowing what had happened to “change” him I was going to explode (& wow I am devastated & enraged). But also…..I needed more of that HEA. An epilogue would have been great.

The fact it feels like at LEAST 50 pages was missing at the end hurt me to my core. Like, I was in my feels, vibing, so excited to see the HEA, but then I turned the page and it was over 🤧😭 LIKE WHAT?!? I feel bamboozled.

That being said Lucas is the best, I love the found family in this series so much, and cannot wait for the next, I think final (?) book.

Lucas had been a solid character thoughout the series and this is officially my favorite book. If I said that about any of the other ones it is only because I hadn't read this one yet

The scene from Frankies office cracked me up...then turned 🥵 .

“I have several bones to pick with you, Mr. Montez,” Lucas said.
“Several angry, heavy thick… bones.”
“Sir, if you want—”
“It’s fine,” Frankie said, barely able to keep the tremble from his voice. “I’ll handle this.”

Things that kept it from 5 stars.
***There is quite a bit page time focused on Gage and Fallon in this book.
I would have like to see more couple stuff.
There was no on page first date outside their apartments. 😒 They plan it, have sex and the date happens off page? It never really said. BUT it was supposedly Lucas first real date so I would have liked to read a out it.

**We didn't even get the introduction of Frankie, Bronx and Monty. It just skipped to the end of the party and everyone liked him.

***The ending was abrupt. It seemed unfinished.

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen what this crew is up to and it was lovely to be reunited with them, with a peek into the second generation. Lucas and Frankie’s romance was so sweet even if their start was a bit rocky. I really loved Frankie’s protectiveness and his clear love for the younger siblings he was raising combined with Lucas’s dogged independence and his incorrigible chaos. The neighbours to lovers device was perfect for their romance to unfold and it was the best way to see how both characters complemented each other—Lucas was able to care for a tired and overwhelmed parent, and Frankie provided the kind of safe and mature harbour that allowed Lucas to explore what he needed and be himself. As always, it was hard to see the very real obstacles and prejudices that follow disabled and neurodivergent people but Lindsey allows for these characters to simply be themselves and find their people. It was also very special to see the friendship between Lucas and Gage and I’m excited for his book and to see their friendship evolve as they both find their HEAs.

This was such a cute story with lots of great elements. Two likable and equally damaged MCs, who genuinely grow to care about each other. But it fell victim to a very abrupt ending with no epilogue.

Lucas is the owner of a food truck who meets Frankie who is the food inspector who makes a surprise inspection on his truck. It is an awkward meet cute when Frankie insults Lucas, who is blind and then abruptly has to leave.

What follow is the story of them meeting again, finding out they’re neighbors, and discovering all the many ways that they were made for each other. Each essentially lonely men who find their unicorn.

It’s a light hearted low angst story. Altho there is a lot of drama outside the couple- Frankie’s brother has an abusive boyfriend, Lucas’ best friend was assaulted, Lucas gets assaulted, Frankie is fighting for custody of Elodie, etc. Like a lot, which would be okay except that at the end it detracted from our couple and I felt like we didn’t get a proper ending

- no third act breakup
- excellent communication. No annoying misunderstandings; they are both remarkably mature.
- Frankie - was born to a 15 yr old mom and by 11 was taking care of his baby siblings. When she was put in jail, he took custody of his then teenage brothers and raised them. Many years later, when the mom is 52, she gives birth to another child, Elodie, who Frankie steps up to raise. She has cerebral palsy and a severe visual impairment. His brother is also transgender and on the spectrum. He was married but his husband left him when he adopted Elodie and he’s been single ever since. He seems to be a caretaker by nature.
- Lucas is 22 and owner of a food truck. He has a best friend, Gage who is actively involved in his life and also a large and complicated family. He is well loved but has never been in love or had a romantic partner. He is funny, direct, and unapologetically himself. He loves to cook and enjoys taking care if Frankie and spending time with Elodie. He is blind since he was a baby and is also on the spectrum.
- age gap: Lucas (22) and Frankie (late 30’s?)
- blindness, autism rep
- spice - starts around 50%. So much mutual consent and care taking.
- Family - lots of supportive secondary characters - Frankie’s two brothers, Gage, and Lucas dads. I really wanted to see the meeting w Frankie and the dads and felt gypped that it was all described off page. Very disappointing.
- Trauma - mentions of neglect and drug use of parent (Frankie’s mom), assault (Lucas by SC’s ex boyfriend), assault (described but off page, Gage), ableism
- No OM. - Lucas is a virgin and Frankie hasn’t been with anyone since his husband 5 yrs ago.
- Dual POV; No epilogue; I love you’s and promise of future at the end.

Overall, a cute story. I found the writing a bit awkward and sometimes the sentence structure was poor and hard to follow. Even given that, this would have been easily 4 stars w a stronger ending or epilogue.

"My heart’s beating in your chest now, Lucas. It’s yours to take care of. I don’t want it back.”
Lucas allowed himself to feel the weight of those words. And then he smiled against Frankie’s finger. “My poet.”
He heard Frankie’s smile in his voice when he said back, “My princess.”

I'm a big fan of EM's writing, they have a really beautiful way with words, and they write about beautiful characters showcasing real disabilities, and metal health issues with such respect. You can tell they take the time to get as much information as they can to make their characters as real as they possibly can. Not everyone's experiences are the same, but I'm sure there's someone out there who can relate to their characters in some way. I know I've related to their characters before.

I've been looking forward to Lucas's character ever since he was first introduced, although I thought he was going to end up with Gage.. but even though he didn't end up who I thought he was going to be with, his story was still really great! I absolutely adore Lucas, he has a lot working against him and while he does have bad days, he doesn't let the world change who he is. Especially when it's judgy health inspectors who make assumptions about how he runs his Food Truck.

Frankie is a complex character, I wasn't sure about him in the beginning, but as I kept reading I got to see the different layers of his character and personality. The more I read about his last, and the strives he made to learn and become better, the more I liked him. And I definitely like him for Lucas too.

These two men had quite an explosive start, but gradually they gave each other a do-over which is when the true magic between them began. Lucas's interactions with Elodie were so precious, I love how he was so gentle and kind to her even when his and Frankie's interactions weren't friendly at the start.

My favorite part of this whole book was seeing the past characters pop back up, they really are a family and that shows tremendously in this story. I also adored seeing the way Lucas and Gage's friendship was depicted, you could feel how much they loved and cared for one another. Their relationship is absolutely beautiful.

In this story, we also learn more about what's been eating at Gage while he was away at school, and it absolutely broke my heart reading about what he went through. I just want to give him a big hug! I'm looking forward to reading his story for two reasons, one of them is because I want to know what's going to happen to the awful people who did such a despicable thing to him. And the other reason is because I want to see him get his Happy Ever After.

I'm sad that this series is basically over, I'm going to miss these characters, but I'm so excited to see the worlds EM creates next.

Divorced, Single dad, health inspector, Frankie and Food truck chef, blind, virgin Lucas

Age gap. Antagonists to Neighbors to Lovers. First times. “Princess”
Disability rep (blind autistic MC. blind cerebral palsy child)

I mean it was fine, but also it wasn’t great and I wasn’t invested at all when I had been looking forward to Lucas and Gage having their books.

I still liked Lucas because he just didn’t let people’s stupid add comment slide and put them all in their place when they’re acting like assholes but I did feel like he lost some of his personality in this. I expected him to be more of his nerdy and independent culinary chef self and really it felt like a footnote aside from having him in a food truck setting. All the DnD from all the series is basically off the table because a douche joined their friend group. His romance with an older guy doesn’t really become a subject either aside from saying he knows he has grey hair and wondering if he’s pretty enough for an older guy could be into a young blind autistic guy like him. We barely get scenes with Elodie so we’re not really feeling a real stepdad vibe either.
Frankie was a fairly bland character in my eyes. He takes care of his siblings and that’s pretty much it. The whole book he keeps referring to the fact that the adoption hearing is coming soon but then it’s not even a subplot.
The first kiss was nice but the rest of it was pretty lukewarm because I just didn’t really care about the romance. I think the problem for me is that theres too much noise around and the romance is lost in all the other characters and all the outside drama so I just don’t care. I did appreciate the sensory descriptions since Lucas is blind and autistic and that felt like a really important vibe to get right for the relationship but it also never really crossed to line where I thought it was great either. And I felt like the author just recycled the office desk bj from a previous book but made it less nice than the first time.

Pretty disappointing overall.

I’m going to finish the series because I want Gage to get his happy ending but I kind of disliked that this book was so much of a setup for the next book. And also between all the drama, I don’t know if we’re not going to lose the love vibes again. We’ll see I guess.

This book was a huge disappointment.

I'm here for disability rep, traumatic backstories etc. - that's 100% my thing. But there was so much going on with every single character in this book. This meant that very little was actually explored in a meaningful way. It was just like... adding every possible ingredient to the recipe just because it's in the pantry.

So many characters from previous/future books. I know some readers love this, but ugh, it was overwhelming.

I didn't buy the relationship here. I didn't see any chemistry. I wasn't interested in either of the main characters.

The only issues really explored were the setup for a future book in the series. So... not even the main characters' issues, though they did affect them. Why did this book even need to exist? Or why couldn't we explore Lucas's career or Frankie's family situation and job?

And let me talk about Gage.

Lucas never expected his food truck dreams to come with a side of sabotage—especially from Frankie, the grumpy health inspector who seems hell-bent on making his life miserable. Blind, inexperienced, and unlucky in love, Lucas fights back with biting sarcasm and zero filter. But as insults fly and tempers flare, Lucas begins to see past Frankie’s rough exterior to the lonely, overwhelmed single dad beneath. Despite the age gap, the chaos, and his own insecurities, Lucas finds himself falling hard—and this time, he’s determined to fight not just for his business, but for the chance at a love that’s as messy and real as he is.

I loved this story with their sharp, emotionally rich exploration of identity, vulnerability, and the messy beauty of unexpected connection. I liked how the story explored how initial impressions often mask deeper truths—and how love requires seeing beyond the surface. I loved that even though Lucas was blind the story highlights his independence, wit, and emotional resilience. The story challenged stereotypes about disability, showing that agency, desire, and strength come in many forms—and that Lucas is fully capable of pursuing what he wants. I also liked that as Lucas and Frankie grew closer, their bond became more than romantic—it was about finding someone who makes you feel safe, wanted, and understood. The story suggested that family isn’t just blood—it’s the people who choose you, even when you’re at your most difficult. So many emotions and feelings in this emotional story which will cause tears as well as smiles. This was an MM story with mature content.

"You’re a fucking beautiful, bright, amazing man who should have been spoiled beyond all reason. And the fact that no one has seen that in you makes me want to undo reality and remake it again the way it should be.”

I’ve loved Lucas since he showed up in the series several books ago. He’s such a great character. He’s such a smart ass and always brings so many humorous moments. I was glad when I discovered he was getting his own book. He made a great lead, and I loved that he still had his signature sarcasm. Frankie was a good match for him. From the blurb, I thought Frankie might have been kind of a jerk, but he totally wasn’t. He was a great guy who had been dealt some tough hands in life. But he had a big heart and only wanted to do right by his family.

These two certainly got off on the wrong foot, but it didn’t take long for them to set things right between them. There was a big age gap, but it worked for them. They balanced each other well, and Frankie was so good at understanding what Lucas needed. They ended up being so sweet together.

I liked seeing them start to blend their families. I only wish that we had gotten to see a bit more of that at the end. It was sort of promised, but then just glossed over in favor of further setting up Gage’s book. I would have liked maybe one more chapter to fully flesh that out. And I wish there had been an epilogue. But aside from that, I really enjoyed this story and loved Lucas and Frankie!

“My heart’s beating in your chest now, Lucas. It’s yours to take care of. I don’t want it back.”

I loved Lucas when I met him as Bronx and Monty's son, and now that he's all grown up I am thrilled he got his own story. Lucas was the kind of guy who lived for himself, not what others expected him to be, even when that left him feeling like the odd one out. He'd been craving an all-consuming love for quite some time but refused to settle for someone who didn't accept him exactly as he was. He and Frankie didn't get off to the best start at the food truck, but after some sincere apologies they got their second chance. For two guys who barely knew each other, their chemistry snapped into place quickly and felt so natural. I got drawn into their connection easily, and though they had little ups and downs as they got to know each other their romance was a steady build throughout the book. I especially enjoyed getting to know Frankie's siblings and seeing Gage and Lucas's best friend bond. Gage and Fallon in particular were working through trauma in this book, and my heart broke into a million pieces for each of them. I stayed engaged with the storyline effortlessly and didn't even realize how quickly I was chewing through their journey until I was right at the end. If you're expecting a big flashy ending, you may be disappointed, but I was content with the family-oriented conclusion to Lucas and Frankie's romance and feel like they're well on their way to a happily forever after.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

Finally I get Lucas's book. He has been a series favorite of mine since I read about him in Book 4 Loving You. He was very brave and independent even then. In this book E. M. has allowed him, despite his autism(or more likely because of it) and his blindness, to be a talented chef in a food truck he owns with dreams of a cafe with books from undervalued authors and great food.
One of the other things E. M. has written beautifully is his continuing friendship with Gage. They will be lifelong friends loving each other till they are in rocking chairs on a porch. "I needed to talk about my feelings, but I felt so...I felt like I didn't have the right to complain to you about my love life after I was such a shit when you confessed your feelings to me."
" We are so passed that," Lucas told him, holding his hand tighter. "And you do love me in an even better way than I wanted back then." This from when Gage finally confessed what happened at school.
And then there is Frankie raising his 2 brothers, Fenton, and Fallon, who is autistic and trans and wanting to come out. And the not small feat of taking in his abandoned sister with cerebral palsy and cortical blindness.
"To the way he pulled Frankie over to a table and fed him and let Frankie ask him questions without reservations.
To the way he somehow seemed to soothe Frankie in ways no one had before."
Yes friends this book gave me everything I could ever desire for Lucas, including seeing almost the whole Words We Never Said family again.

I've waited so long for this story

I've loved Lucas throughout the series and seeing him in his own book was a long time coming. Lucas as a character has been wonderful and is even more so here as we get to know him properly. E.M.'s sensitive and insightful portrayal of his blindness and autism was as good as their disability rep always is.
The romance between Lucas and Frankie happened very quickly and it didn't quite ring true. . Frankie had a lot on his plate and Lucas' best friend, Gage, was struggling.
There was a lot more Gage in this book than I expected and it was just a set up for his book, which is next, and we already knew he's got something big worrying him before now. I'd rather have found out all about it in his book, rather than it take up page time here.
The ending came very abruptly and I felt cheated .
This may sound as though I didn't enjoy but I did. I just could have enjoyed it so much more.

Another good installment of one of my favourite ongoing series.

The main characters are authentic, relatable, and immediately likable. Lucas captivated me; a chef with his own food truck, possessing a unique blend of humor, passion, and flair, coupled with a kind spirit, yet also displaying vulnerability; he is blind, autistic, and moves through life with courage. Frankie is an exceptional individual, remarkable for his support of his family; I'm truly impressed. The writing style is appreciated for its honest portrayal of ableist attitudes and for illustrating how even well-meaning people can err.

While age gap isn't one of my favorite tropes, the chemistry between the main leads stems from an emotional bond, not just attraction. I'm a sucker for romance that's rich with sentiment, and this book delivers. The characters' connection felt genuine and heartwarming, making the story incredibly compelling.

However, the abrupt ending gave me pause. A story that explores sensitive topics and is filled with beautifully flawed characters could give us a half-baked ending. Disappointing is not the word I would associate with this writer or series, but here we are.

All in all, it’s a worthwhile read for anyone who enjoys romance with depth. Despite some shortcomings, the story’s heartfelt characters and genuine connection made it memorable.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. For one, both main characters deal with physical and emotional issues. Lucas is blind and autistic. Frankie has been raising his brothers and sister. One brother is autistic while the sister is still very young but dealing with partial blindness (they are still trying to figure out exactly how much she can see) and Cerebral Palsy as well as seizures. These issues were much of the good in the novel as they demnstrated caring and understanding by the author..

There were some bad things happening. Frankie was nasty to Lucas when he inspected his food truck from the tension about Elodie's seizure. Fallon's ex boyfriend broke some bones in Lucas' cheek and interfered with Fallon's wedding photgraphy. Gage, Lucas' longterm friend was drugged and now is subject to paternity test and harassment. These topics were dealt with with a degree of understanding that merits positive notice,

There were a number of things that were missung. Gage and Fallon dated a bit after the incident's with Fallon's ex, but that story was not explored but could be a future book which may be why. The attraction between Lucas and Frankue was good but was left unfinished. Meeting the famililies was not explored; the issue of verstility in the sexual part of the relationship was mentioned but not explored on page; and there was no epilogue.

OMG…Winning You by E.M. Lindsey was absolutely fabulous. If life and parenting didn't get in my way, I would have read this book in one sitting. It has been a long while since a book had me hooked like Winning You.

Winning You is the 7th book in the Words We Never Said series. If I am being honest, this is my favorite of the series and I have read them all.

Winning You brings together Lucas and Frankie. Their first meeting did not go so well, but Frankie being the absolute sweetheart come back and apologizes for his bad mood on that first day. Lucas and Frankie begin to soften to each other and are completely drawn to each other. They both have had trauma. Lucas's ex-dad (and I love that term) essentially abandoned him. Frankie had to take in and raise his siblings when their mother couldn't. But these challenges did not bring either of them down.

I felt that Lucas tried to hide his pain behind his snark. It became clear as the book progresses that he just has a big heart and tries to use humor as a protective method.

I absolutely adored this book and meeting Frankie's brothers and sister. I am excited to see how Lucas gets his café up and running.

Spice: 4/5
Fun: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

Thank you to the author for providing an eARC for an honest review.

Gorgeous love story

I've enjoyed this whole series but this one was special. I blasted through it in one go and just wanted more when I got to the end.

I loved so much about this: the incredible disability rep & the way ableism was tackled. Lucas's extended found family (all the other characters from earlier books in the series). How, even with a significant age gap, there's no power imbalance in the relationship. And how adorable Lucas is as he eases into the role of stepdad-to-be.

I would have loved more on the meeting of the dads (and them wanting to be grandparents!) but that's because I love these characters.

There is quite a bit of background angst in this one, so check the CWs if IPV or SA are issues for you to read about.

In this, you'll find:
●MM contemporary romance with on-page s.e.x scenes
●Blind, gay, autistic, virgin food truck chef
●Gay single dad health inspector
●Age gap (22 & late thirties)
●Spouse leaving over family responsibilities
●Blind child with Cerebral Palsy & seizures, born to a drug addict
●Past parental neglect
●Ableism including slurs used
●Loss of friendship groups over ableism
●Past drugging & sexual assault of a secondary character
●Threats of revenge porn
●Emotional & physical abuse of a secondary character, including transphobia
●Assault
●Hospital treatment

🌶️🌶️🌶️

Since Lucas was introduced in this series… I’ve been smitten with this chaos gremlin. Sure, I was a bit disappointed that Lucas and Gage weren't endgame, but obviously E.M. had a much better idea in mind.

Frankie was just a hot mess, and I absolutely loved him with Lucas. I wouldn’t call it a meet cute, more of a meet hate, but I really enjoyed all the back and forth between them. One of the things I love about E.M.'s writing is that most (if not all) of these men are already head over heels by chapter 1, and this was no different. Frankie's past wasn’t what I expected when we first met him, but he is definitely every bit the exhausted single parent I’ve ever seen.

Lucas, my feral little gremlin who always fights for what he believes in and stands up for himself. Lucas running into Frankie and Elodie, the new neighbors from down the hall, completely threw Frankie off guard. Frankie thinks Lucas won’t remember their first encounter, but Lucas bides his time and hits where it hurts. Which should be the end of it. But like atoms, they just can’t seem to stay away from each other. Lucas always trying to feed Frankie was honestly one of the sweetest things I've seen.
