A dark academia romantasy inspired by the Greek mythology love story of Hekate and Hermes.

In a kingdom where magic is slowly disappearing, an evil king hunts witches, brands their kind as traitors, and forces mages to serve under his endless rule. But the king hides many secrets, and one of them, when unearthed, will shatter the balance of power and unmask the mythic monster the world once mistook for a god.

Bellatrix Bane, a witch hiding among mages, never meant to fall for her enemy. After a Heartstring binds her to Skymage Dorian Mistfall, her destiny becomes a death sentence.

The witches curse her to die by the Death Sands, an enchanted hourglass that will stop her heart when the final grain falls. They give her one chance to survive: seduce Dorian, betray him, and steal his secrets before her time runs out.

She will need his help to find a gate concealed by ancient magic, revealed only by a locator spell requiring bones, blood, and ashes from the bloodlines that sealed it.

As Titans stir in the mountains and rumors of a lost heir spread through the realm, witches, mages, and the Starmarked Seven brace for a magical war that will decide the fate of their world.

ANOTHER 5 STARS

Book three gives us Dorian & Bellatrix (Hermes + Hekate POVs). As we already know from the previous books, Heartstring Bonds are forbidden between witches and mages.

So what does that mean? It means we’re about to get into some serious shit with B & D.

As punishment, Bellatrix is being used by the witches to seduce Dorian and steal secrets from him and the Raven Society. Which - what the hell - you don’t exactly choose your Heartstring Bonds.

Book 3 was so action packed and the twist at the end??? *picks jaw off the ground*

I know I said Bastian & Layla were my favorites… but I think I’m officially more obsessed with Bellatrix & Dorian.

Tropes:
-grumpy x grumpy
-forbidden romance
-yearninggggg
-fake dating
-dark magic
-shifters
-demons
-secret societies
-magical academia

Thank you to Ever King for my ARC of this book. My obsession with this series keeps on growing and I tried very hard to fight my instincts to race through the pages and I tried to savour it but it was in vain and I devoured the book and now I'm in a hangover. It's fast paced, twisty, full of yearning, forbidden temptations and shocking revelations. This book delves more into the witches, hiding in plain sight and constantly on edge of being discovered. It gives us more world building by adding their knowledge of the history leading up to the present and really has the reader questioning the known and accepted facts. The ending, jaw dropping! Fantastic, twisty and addictive, I am feral for this whole series.

Bellatrix is outwardly cold, a little cruel and in control but inside she's vulnerable and torn, wanting desperately to choose her own path but is forced to follow the destiny the Witch Mothers demand of her, even having to prove her loyalty to them after they discover her bond to Dorian.

Dorian is fiercely protective, vulnerable only to her and fast becoming a new favourite book boyfriend! I love how this book really opened is eyes to the world around him and Bellatrix had him questioning why things were outlawed and what was right. I love Trixie and his bond to her as well.

The story is focused on the witches and blends seamlessly with everything we've read so far, giving the reader another perspective on everything. Dorian and Bellatrix share a heartstring bond and whilst Dorian is accepting, Bellatrix is shocked and struggles to come to terms with it. This isn't helped when her loyalty to the witches is called into question and the Mothers set her a task which puts her very life in danger if she should fail. They decree she must spy upon the Raven Society and report back and use her bond with Dorian to get what she needs. Determined to remain in control at all times with him and resist the bond she ruthlessly pursues her course. They quest to find the Colossal Gate and understand more, calling upon Demons, ancient texts and information from different sources to reach their objectives. All the while cracks appear in Bellatrix's facade and her loyalty is constantly in question on all sides.

Thank you to Ever King for approving me to read this book, I’m rating it 4.0 stars.

As we follow on from book 2 the stakes remain just as high. The way the book unfolds we get a lot of new revelations, new allies and absolutely more danger. I have some questions which I hope to be answered in the continuing books of the series, my main questions surround the heartbonds and what these alliances are building up to.. I only know it’s going to be an insane conclusion once we get there.

The witches are quite terrifying and complex in this book, I also feel like we’ve only learned half the mystery surrounding them and their ways. I look forward to seeing how the ending of this book impacts the next instalment in the series.

Ummm wow that ending?! I need the next book like NOW?!

Once again another amazing book by Ever! Thank you so so much for the arc. I absolutely loved it & love being apart of the team!!

While I disliked how soft Dorian was throughout the book when it came to Bellatrix, he really made up for it about 65-70% in and holy shitttt, so hot!! I was blushingggg.

Honestly the ending is what really got me. The last like 100 pages are so action packed I could not put it down. The plot twists?? Truly was not expecting that!!

my rating: ★★★★★

Lessons in Trickery is, without question, my favourite book in the Academy of Villains series so far. Ever King takes everything that worked in the previous installments and sharpens it into a story that is darker, smarter, and utterly addictive.

This book shines brightest in its Greek mythology retelling of Hekate and Hermes — a pairing that feels inspired, electric, and perfectly suited to the morally grey world of the academy. The mythological roots are woven seamlessly into the narrative, enhancing the magic system, rituals, and secret societies without ever feeling heavy-handed. If you love mythology reimagined with teeth, this delivers in every way.

The dark academia atmosphere is at its peak here. From shadowy corridors and forbidden rituals to whispered alliances and dangerous lessons, the setting feels immersive and alive. The story leans fully into its darker themes — deception, power, and choice — while still maintaining a sharp sense of wit and playfulness through its characters.

The romance is outstanding. The grumpy x grumpy dynamic paired with fake dating creates constant tension, biting banter, and an irresistible push-and-pull. Add in the forbidden romance element, and every interaction feels charged with risk. Their chemistry builds naturally, fueled by secrets, mistrust, and undeniable attraction — making the payoff incredibly satisfying.

I also loved the dual POV, which allows readers to fully experience both characters’ internal conflicts and motivations. It deepens the emotional stakes and makes their unlikely connection feel earned rather than convenient.

What truly sets this book apart is how confidently it balances plot, romance, and mythology. The twists are clever, the stakes are high, and the emotional beats land hard. By the end, I was completely hooked — already desperate for what comes next.

Lessons in Trickery is a masterclass in dark fantasy romance: smart, seductive, myth-rich, and impossible to put down. Ever King has truly outdone herself with this one.

Thank you so much to the author for sharing an ARC of this book with me !!!!

“I’d take her cruelty over anyone else’s kindness. I’d rather be undone by her hands than held together by anyone else”

“Touch her again and I’ll break your jaw”

I’m such a fan of this intriguing and creative Greek mythology inspired stories !!! This third book was everything I could have expected and then some. Bellatrix and Dorian’s story was enchanting, gripping and exciting. It was impossible, improbabile and yet inevitable.
It’s the good boy / bad girl dynamic that did it for me. That we don’t see that frequently. It’s him being absolutely and devastatingly in love with her, that he simply cannot help himself but he needs to be there for her, with her, however she wants. It’s the desperation in the way he loves her. It’s the moment she has to admit that he loves her too!!! It’s all to die for and it does leave you breathless by some simple exchanges they have!!! And the story and the journey they both have to face this time around !!! Involving demons, no less?!?! I love how it intertwined within the narrative of the other two books, creating a deeper and more complicated pattern that will have all the characters involved in it. And I can’t wait to figure out what’s about to happen in the next one (if that last chapter is any indication!!!)

“Maybe Dorian Mistfall offers the dark, quiet kind of worship that makes even a demon jealous”

“Power is only something you can claim when you’re brave enough to let go of who you are”

“Now be a good boy”

Bellatrix Bane is a witch. So far neither the mages nor the witch hunters found out how many witches are hiding in plain sight in the academy and among them.
When a Heartstring bonds her to Dorian Mistfall, a member of the Raven society, the witch community wants a proof that they can still trust her. They curse her with the Death Sands, an enchanted hourglass and when the final grain falls her heartbeat will also stop. Her task is to seduce and use Dorian to find a lost Gate.
Hidden secrets get revealed, Titans stir again and are a risk for everybody and the search for a Gate is done by several societies but why is it hidden and what will happen when somebody tries to open it again?

This is the 3rd book in the Academy of Villains Book and I really love this series!
I really like the world and characters created here and how the author is providing with every book some more information about the bigger picture, bigger storyline.
I
really enjoy all the secrets we have here, the different societies with their own agenda, the friendships developing here even so they seem so totals different but most of all who gets a Heartstring with whom and how the pairs handle it.
This is not a cozy, lovely fantasy book. Now this is darker and this time we also have demons and Titans which need to be faced.

Bellatrix and the Skymage Dorian as the main characters.
I like Bellatrix as her family was killed when she was small and she grew up hating mages and what they did and still do to witches. She is trained to spy for the witches and when unwanted a Heartstring binds her to a mage her whole world starts crashing down. The witches see her as a traitor and don´t trust her any longer, worst of all they are more than willing to risk her life. So sure she is not happy about the whole Heartstring, wants to use Dorian. I liked how bit by little bit their relationship changes.
To get to know Dorian so much better was a joy for me. Honestly he was really absolutely patient from my point of view with Bellatrix. What he risks and is willing to do to save the one he loves is great written.

We also learn more things about the bigger picture in this kingdom.
But still many questions remain open. Where is the missing princess? Why was the Colossal Gate hidden and most of all should it be re opened and what is awaiting the world should this happen?
It seems like a magical war is coming not only between the mages and witches which might decide the fate of their world.

I absolutely recommend this series when you are interested in darker fantasy, academy setting, magic and lots of secretes which needs to be revealed.

Spice: 🌶️.5

Each book in this series keeps getting better and better. It grows darker with each story yet the pieces of the plot come together little by little but it leaves you on the edge of your seat (or bed, depending where you read). The ending...the PLOT TWIST. I was trying to guess who an item was shining for (keeping it spoiler free) and I was so close but still SHOCKED. And to learn certain identities...well, I was not expecting THAT.

I could not keep to a chapter a night before sleep because I just had to know what was happening next. The forbidden romance, the trouble that Bellatrix finds herself in both within the Academy and with the witches, the torn alliance Dorian finds himself in between, the Slytherin common room vibes, the academy of magic, the secrets that are starting to spill little by little. It's all sooo good!

Normally I don't go for guys who are too soft, but Dorian is the PERFECT blend between soft and will also not hesitate to kill someone, especially for Bellatrix. He is just soft FOR HER and no one else. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, he has secrets of his own, and I loved the balance that he has. I also loved his internal struggle of his alliance between Bellatrix and the Ravens Society.

Bellatrix is also one of my favourite characters. She is black cat energy (and is also a black cat) but is also fun, sarcastic, and cheeky. Watching her slowly fall for Dorian against her will even though he falls first is so sweet but also intense because of the forbidden elements between them. I love the grumpy x grumpy dynamic and the fake dating which makes the tension even more intense.

I absolutely cannot WAIT for the next book and the next set of characters. I already know it's going to be even darker and more intense than this one! I highly recommend getting into this series if you're craving dark academia, romance, mythology, and fantasy. This series really does deliver and it gets better with each book and each pairing.

Thank you to Ever King, to the publisher and to StoryOrigin for the ARC on exchange for my honest opinion.

I just finished the book about 20 minutes ago and WOW. Just... WOW!!! I still have so many thoughts mixed inside my head.
This series just keeps getting better and better. As we move forward and focus on a new couple, they (as individuals and as a couple) bring new elements to the table and to the group we follow from the start. I love the worldbuilding and how it expanded more on this book, I love the main story and how it keeps going forward and getting more plot points added to it in each book and, on this one, oh there was so much going on...
I love Dorian and Bellatrix. It started as a different kind of relationship but Dorian is a golden retriever for her. When he got to be like her and "break" her facade, that's when she got to be her with him and I LOVED it.
But I gotta talk about the last 15% of the book or so. WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT EVER? From the moment Dorian used the Heartstring to use her magic against the Stonehearts, I was like WHATTTT??? and my jaw dropped. And then when the bloodshard ring glowed, I mouth-screamed WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE'S WHAT? about 3 times. After that my jaw was dropped for the rest of the book. Not wanting to be very spoilery but from the reaper thing to the heir thing to Lilith, to Edmund to Tobias, to Heartstring to Octavia... How can someone manage all theses emotions and all these plot twists and HUGE revelations? I had to stop a few times and reread what I was rereading cause I wasn't believing. Just. Too. GOOD!!!
Ever King a round of applause to you and I don't know how I'm going to handle the wait till the next book.
This is not a 5 stars book. As I said, the world-building, the plot, the dominatrix relationship, the found family in this, the unimaginable twists and revelations... This is a 10 out of 5 stars book! Incredible 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I recommend everyone who loves everything I mentioned above to read this series. It's a must-read and completely underrated!

This is book 3 in the Academy of Villains Series and let me tell you.. i LOVE it! Each book keeps the story so fresh as it is focused on new couples each time, but you also see and frequently interact with the past couples.

By this point you really have started to get to know each and every member of the Raven Society and the Starmarked Seven! I wish i could immediately get all the rest of the character books asap cos I JUST NEED TO KNOW EVER PLEEEASEE!!!

Lessons of Trickery looks into Dorian and Bellatrix. Dorian is soooo swoon worthy, he is so devout to Bellatrix and i cannot cope with how h o ttttt it is that he does everything she says omg! Plus, consent is sexy. The whole not touching until she says? MELTINGGG!

Bellatrix shows as this cold, unfeeling B *COUGH* I MEAN witch. Where as there is really so many layers to her. She's been used her whole life, wishing she could go her own way but staying loyal to the mothers is the only route she knows to stay safe and surrounded by people. You can see the fear of loneliness and its heart-breaking.

I really enjoyed deep diving into the witches this book, it gave us more of a background into the whole world and magic system, which omg i think is sooo cool! Atticus really intrigues me, he gets everything right so i feel we all need to listen to him more seriously!!

Ever did such an amazing job with the descriptions. She always words things so beautifully and in such a good way that it is so easy to picture exactly what she is describing and being able to hold onto that mental image throughout al the books.

Now... is this a controversial want? Because i realllly want a book on Dantoremus... I know what happens later but STILL! I really likes him despite everything

The third installment of the Academy of Villains series by Ever King, Lessons in Trickery, follows the powerful Bellatrix Bane and heartthrob Dorian Mistfall.

Dark academia and Greek mythology collide in this compelling story set in a kingdom where magic is slowly disappearing and where witches are being hunted. Bellatrix Bane is one of those witches and has been infiltrating the Academy for years now. But ever since Kiara catalyzed the Heartsrings, Bellatrix finds herself being bound to her sworn enemy, Dorian Mistfall. To prove her loyalty, she has to pull the strings and steal Dorian's secrets.

The characters
Bellatrix is an absolute icon of a lethal lady. Despite the established dichotomy between witches and mages, the tensions between her and Dorian slowly destabilize this. It starts with themselves: doubtful whether they can trust each other. It's hard to change the things you've believed in for years, but these two show that it is possible and that it even lets you see beyond that. While Bellatrix is most often cold-hearted towards Dorian, you still sympathise with her, because she has her duty to her coven (and the fact that mages have been hunting her kind to extinction). The way it's written shows the vulnerable side of her and the inner struggles she has.

Dorian is the complete opposite. While he's been portrayed as the most dangerous or cold one of the Raven Society, he's walking after Bellatrix like a lost puppy. The only dangerous thing is that he'll literally unlive anyone who as much as lays a finger on her. Possessive? Sure, but do I mind? Naaahh.

As with the previous book, this one continues the main plotline and brings the other characters back occasionally. This makes it easy to follow and remember what happened previously. I love it when the whole cast of characters is together, broadening the focus on the main couple (Bellatrix and Dorian), making it more adventurous and thrilling than just following the romance between them.
The pace is perfect, and I can't wait to read what's next and meet the other characters.

Thank you, Ever King, for letting me join the Royal Court!

I feel like I’ve been holding my breath waiting for this next installment in the Academy of Villains series—and when it finally released its claws, it was everything I hoped for and so much more.

Bellatrix and Dorian… two names I adore and two characters I fell for completely. Dorian’s quiet understanding and fiercely protective nature were equal parts charming and disarming—exactly what Bellatrix never wanted, yet everything she never knew she needed.

The plot has officially thickened. More pieces are on the board, more secrets are surfacing, and the story becomes impossible to put down. The introduction of the witches and their history was beautifully written and added an extra layer of intensity that raised the stakes even higher.

The intricacy of the world-building continues to amaze me. Secret societies, hidden powers, and centuries-old desires intertwine into a labyrinth of intrigue. We are miles away from where Kiera and Lucian began in book one, yet the writing still carries the same magic—now sharpened, darker, and more compelling than ever.

I devoured this book in one sitting, completely losing track of time and reality. The ending? Frustrating in the best way—action-packed, glittering with chaos, and capped with a cliffhanger that left me staring at the page in disbelief.

This book isn’t even officially out yet, and I already need the next one like I need air. Every chapter only deepens my obsession with Kaspians backstory—each of his appearances dripping in mystery and leaving me with more questions than answers.

Ever King has officially claimed the crown as the new queen of Greek mythology retellings, and if you haven’t stepped into the magic of the Academy of Villains series yet… this is your sign.

Any exciting third book to this series, this one picks up right where the last left off, but with two new characters POV and story to follow and a whole new set of problems to deal with while still fitting into the theme and main issues of the previous cast of characters.

This time you follow the FMC of Bellatrix, a witch hiding in plain sight at the mage academy, going undercover to gather information that will help her people, and a MMC again from the group of Raven Boys, Dorian, who she has now formed a heartstring bond to. This story follows as the FMC has a limited time to uncover a secret location, and use her bond with Dorian, along with the connection she’s building with the other girls with the same mark, before her time runs out!

This book featured just as much action and adventure as the first two, with battle scenes, secret missions, spying for both sides, and plenty of tension between the two main characters featured in this book! I enjoyed the start of the book mainly focusing on the two main characters outside of the huge overarching problems the first two books introduced, before slowly pulling them into the complicated web everyone else is stuck in! I really enjoyed the he feel first black cat girl, golden retriever boy style vibes between the main pair as well! Getting to peak into the previous two sets of couples lives while also introducing some new ones made this web of relationships even more complicated! I really have been enjoying this series and after the cliffhanger chaos that happened at the end I can’t wait to see where it heads next and whose story it will follow!! Overall my rating 4.6/5!

I still have not fully recovered from that ending 🤯 Wow!! I am desperate for the next book, and I think I know whose book it will be, because that setup was absolutely CRAZY.

Lessons in Trickery delivered everything it promised. This is darker, faster, and full of action, tension, and devious behavior from every side. I love how each book introduces new characters POVs while the overall story continues to move forward. The worldbuilding expands in such a satisfying way, especially with the deeper exploration of witches and how their magic differs from mages. It felt like a second magic system was layered in.

Dorian and Bellatrix are completely different from the previous couples and that’s one of my favorite things about this series. Every couple feels unique. Their femme domme × dangerous simp dynamic had me hooked. I was grinning every time they interacted. The heartstring bond happening early was perfect because once it hit everything escalated fast.

Bellatrix is sent on a mission by the witch Mothers to seduce Dorian, steal his secrets, and ultimately find the Colossal Gate. It all tied into the Raven's missions and I could not get enough of the demon summons and shifter lore added here.

I loved everything about this book but those last few chapters delivered in a way I did not see coming. I am genuinely mad it ended where it did because I now have the most brutal book hangover and I need the next one immediately!

If you haven’t started this series yet, I highly recommend it. Somehow it just keeps getting better.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. These thoughts are my own.

And just like that, the plot 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙨. So many threads are starting to weave together and it’s truly amazing how well these different storylines mesh. I don’t know how Ever King manages it, but this is master story telling.

In this installment, we’re back to enemies to lovers with a side of fake dating - two of my absolute favorites - so naturally I ate this up. I will admit to took me a while to warm up to Bellatrix’s character. She’s a bit cold and her refusal to let others in makes her a tad cruel, but as we learn more about her it all truly makes sense - and makes her moments of vulnerability that much more powerful. I think she still has a lot of growth coming but I really enjoyed her character arc here.

All the while, Dorian was not what I was expecting at all and loved how truly sweet he was. He’s the perfect balance of soft and dominant, always knowing which side of him is necessary in the moment.

While the plot definitely gets more complex, it never feels like too many moving pieces. There are some wild revelations towards the end, making me very excited about the rest of this story. There are so many secrets coming to light, bringing the most unlikely of characters (and enemies) together and I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

I absolutely loved diving right back into the Academy of Villains and this time I get to know more about a duo I had been dying to know more about. Bellatrix and Dorian are both names that I love for one but I love the Hekate and Hermes play here. Witch and Mage. They go through their own trials and tribulations over what they are to each other and where they belong within the world. A witch can't be with a Mage. A Mage can't be with a witch. But maybe this duo can pull through.

I love Dorian and how attached he is. He's protective, he's eager, he's also charming. I think he's charming. The lengths he will go through to keep the one he love's safe is perfect. He may have some icy magic but he's definitely able to bring heat to the table.

Bellatrix is prickly at best but she definitely melts when it comes to a certain someone. She's stuck with challenges she didn't ask for but she doesn't balk and throws herself at the tasks she must do. She's bold and fierce and smart when it comes down to it. Her and Dorian are oddly a perfect match for each other.

The plot kept me there needing to know what would happen next between our duo but also within the witch's and the raven society. the end of the story has me NEEDING to read the next book cause I need to know what happens next with how that ending happened but also I need to know the next couple!

Holy enemies to lovers Batman this series just keeps getting better and better. How Ever manages to layer in these interconnected stories is beyond me but I am so excited to be experiencing it.

We’re teased this setup in book 2 with all that angsty tension between Dorian and Bellatrix and boy was it delivered in this book. The bond aspect happens quickly and it makes the hottest little simp out of our bad boy Dorian. He falls fast. And he falls hard. 😮‍💨 But love between a witch and a mage is forbidden. After Bellatrix lands herself in a heap of witchy trouble Dorian will stop at nothing to keep her safe and Bellatrix must play both sides while doing all she can to keep him at arms length. The chemistry between these two was the most delicious slow build and the payoff was definitely worth the slow ascent 🥵🫠

Where this story took a most interesting turn was in the last 10%. This was an ending I absolutely did not see coming. I gasped out loud and looked around my dark bedroom to see if anyone else was shocked right along with me. This was one of those look at the camera moments and go “WHAT THE F-?!” If Ever’s goal was to make her fans go feral for the next book she succeeded. I need it. And I need it now.

What you get:
- magical academy
- enemies to lovers
- witch x mage
- heart bonds
- deadly quests
- forbidden romance
- soft for her
- he falls first
- girl power

𝙳𝚎𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 : Everyone’s a villain in someone else’s story.

𝚃𝚛𝚘𝚙𝚎𝚜 : Hermes x Hecate | forbidden romance | dark academia | magical academy | fake dating | secret societies | dark magic | witches, mages, demons

𝙵𝚒𝚛𝚜𝚝 𝚜𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎 : Twilight is the only hour I trust.

𝙾𝚞𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚡𝚝 𝚀𝚞𝚘𝚝𝚎 : “Say my name.”

𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗯 : You know how in the good books, you have a crush on the main character? Well, in this book, I have a girl crush on the FMC. She’s a rowdy little witch - literally, who find herself in a whole heap of trouble.

I’ll be honest, most of the time men just think that they need to save us. However, a few times in this book, Dorian actually does some incredible saving - especially of her from herself.

So, what’s going on? Witches aren’t allowed at the magical academy. However, they do walk the halls. The short version is mages have been known to kill witches - some of them are even witch hunters. Belatrix finds herself with a heart bond with none other than a mage; Dorian. Welcome to a world of “this can’t be happening.”

Dorian turns into a simp for her. He will do anything she wants him to and anything he needs to to save her. Can two people work together to save the world? Who will they end up hurting along the way? Will it be worth it?

Thank you to Ever King for an ARC copy of Lessons in Trickery, Book 3 in the Academy of Villains series. I am absolutely loving this series, and each installment continues to get better and better. One thing that never disappoints is the strength of the female characters—this series consistently delivers powerful, compelling women.
The world-building and character history in this book are fantastic. Fast-paced and action-packed, the story is full of unexpected developments and moments that completely catch you off guard. I also love how each book focuses on a different pair of characters while still advancing the larger storyline, weaving each individual story seamlessly into the broader narrative.
Bellatrix and Dorian share an instant connection, but their relationship doesn’t fall into place easily. For Bellatrix, it’s a constant battle—her life depends on completing her mission and redeeming herself after forming a dangerous heartstring with a mage. Dorian, on the other hand, falls hard and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her in his life.
And that ending!!! Completely unexpected.

Oh I’ve missed this world so much! I’ve ARC read for the first two as well, and I dont know how i would have waited for this to come out because the plot, the world, the characters?
I’ve not read before this way of splitting an overarching fantasy plot over several couples and interweaving them so much outside of contempory but it works so well - I NEED Tobias and Octavia’s book now! But I also cant wait for Kaspians, and I KNOW Edmund and Liliths is going to be so good so honestly I’m just waiting with baited breath for the next announcement of the new love story I’m going to be getting!
Each of the stories have felt so different, despite sharing the dark academia background, and while book two is still my favourite (Lila and Bastian are perfection!) this one takes us into the world of the witches, which i suspect we are going to see more of in liliths book too!
Romance Rating: Explicit - 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ multiple sex scenes throughout, they are spicy and a little step further than vanilla so it definitely has ratcheted up several notches from the closed door first one.
Violence Rating: Level 4
Content Warnings: sexual assault/physical assault by a previous boyfriend

This was definitely my favorite couple overall so far. Dorian and Bellatrix were so hot together and had excellent chemistry. I have felt their tension in the last two books and was so excited to hear their story.
This installment of the series defintely had alot more lore and history of the kingdoms and I'm glad it wasn't just the main storyline we have seen so far. I liked that we got the POV of the oppressed population (the witches) rather than only those of the dominant population (the mages/ravens). As heartbreaking as it was to see Bellatrix experience some other characters, I liked seeing other sides to her and adding roundness to her character. Same with Dorian. I liked that we got to see the more secret sides of him that he doesn't show other people, even the ravens. He really exposed himself (literally and figuratively) in this book and I loved learning deeper parts of him as we went.
I love how each book follows a differnt couple but holds the original goal of uncovering the secrets behind a corrupt kingdom. The plot, th action, the tension, in this series always draws me in so well and has a choke hold on me till the very end.

“I hate that I want him. I hate that I can’t keep him. I hate that this is all a lie.”

“Lie to me, use me. But don’t leave me.”

✅ Grumpy x Grumpy
✅ Unique Magic System
✅ Complex World Building
✅ Steamy Scenes
✅ Badass FMC

The third instalment of the Academy of Villains book definitely did not disappoint and each book just keeps getting better and better. I think that Dorian and Bellatrix might just be my favourite couple yet!

The world that Ever King is building here is so intriguing and multifaceted with well developed characters and a brilliant over arching storyline that continues to develop within each book. I particularly enjoyed exploring the witches more in Lessons in Trickery and navigating a forbidden romance between a mage and a witch. The angst was strong and I love how strong both Dorian and Bellatrix are.

I cannot wait to read more as the series develops and I’m especially excited to read more about the Stoneheart twins and Kaspian!

Thank you to Ever King and the publishers for the ARC 🎉

Ever King continues to level up with each book, and Lessons in Trickery feels richer, darker, and more assured than what came before.

Bellatrix is a complex lead, pulled in opposite directions by obligation and her own heart, making every decision feel fraught and costly. Dorian stands in contrast protective to the core, steady, and threaded through with longing that gives their connection a constant, quiet tension.

The world-building really shines here. Secret societies, hidden agendas, and long-buried knowledge add depth to the academy, making it feel like a place built on half-truths and carefully guarded power. Alongside that, the theme of found family weaves through the story, offering moments of warmth and loyalty in a world where trust is dangerous and secrets are currency.

Layered, atmospheric, and emotionally restrained, this instalment makes it clear that the series is growing stronger with every book.

I thoroughly enjoy this series! This is Book 3 in the Academy of Villains series and this time inspired by the Greek mythology love story of Hekate and Hermes, which are Bellatrix and Dorian here. The books in the series just keep on getting better and better, if that’s even possible! They start to expand and interweave, and it gives little easter eggs of what’s to come. I love the spin on all these books! They are entertaining and keep me engaged flying through chapters to find out what happens next. I love all the characters, each in their own way. There are so many layers and so much emotional depth. The magic system is unique, and I love experiencing it unfold a little more in each book. These are so fun and I'm incredibly excited to see where the series goes. I’m going to be so sad when the series eventually comes to an end!

Thank you so incredibly much to the author for an advanced reader copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all thoughts are my own.

Thank you so much to the author for the eARC!

This is a dark academia romantasy inspired by the Greek mythology love story of Hekate and Hermes. It follows Bellatrix Bane, a witch hiding among mages, and Skymage Dorian Mistfall. With witches hunted and forced into hiding, Bellatrix has spent her entire life concealing who she truly is.

Bellatrix is cunning, determined, and so very vulnerable. She can’t be herself out of fear of being discovered as a witch. When a heartstring binds her to Dorian, her instinct is to protect herself at all costs. She lies, to herself, to her coven, and to Dorian, and is forced to choose between loyalty to her coven and loyalty to herself.

Dorian is protective and very determined. He’s caring and devoted, especially when it comes to Bellatrix. When pushed to choose between her and the Raven Society, he doesn’t hesitate, he chooses her.

The story also gives us more information about the past, the curse, and the fate of the witches, who were captured during the war. Be warned: this book ends on a major cliffhanger.

‘do you think this is a game?
…if i said yes, would you play with me?’

•lessons in trickery- ever king💜🖤•

i’ve had the absolute pleasure on continuing this series with early access being a street team member for @authoreverking and again, it’s been smashed out the park!👏🏽

bellatrix bane had me under her spell the entirety of this book, so i can only imagine how our dorian mistfall felt being in such close proximity under their fake dating arrangement😩😮‍💨

my heart bleeds for dorian as his would gladly bleed for bellatrix- who is stubborn, strong and a force to be wreckened with for sure! her vibes? 10/10❤️‍🔥 she holds all the power and control and she’s very clear on that. i just love her!

we have heartstrings, magic, betrayal, deception and a war brewing. i’m 100% here for it and that ending?!?! i am SO excited for the next book because it is about to GO OFF!!!🫣👀😮‍💨

I really wanted to root for Bellatrix, and while she didn’t fully click for me, I could appreciate the complexity behind her character. She’s written with sharp edges and strong defenses, which made her feel intentionally difficult at times — even if that distance kept me from fully connecting with her as a reader.

The romance with Dorian was a slower burn than I expected. The story clearly tells us there’s something meaningful between them, and while I didn’t always feel that progression as strongly on the page, I can see the foundation being laid. It feels less like a completed arc and more like a relationship still finding its footing.

But the ending? Wow. It completely turned things around for me. That final twist reignited my excitement for the series in a big way. I won’t spoil anything, but it sets up book 4 beautifully. It has me very curious about which relationship will take center stage next. 👀✨

4.5 stars

This was such a good book. It has propelled the series further. I was not expecting those shocking reveals. There are still so many questions that need answers. I can hardly imagine what the next book will be like. This book was crazy. I did enjoy Bellatrix and Dorian's story. They are not my favorite, though. I didn't feel like we got to know them enough for me to fall in love with them. I did notice that, similar to a problem I had with the last book, there was repetition of phrases. Those parts took me out of the story a bit. Overall, I love this series. I'm eager to see what happens in Book 4. I have to find out what is in the epilogue. I'm beyond thankful to be a part of this review team. There is something special about this series. I hope more people give it a chance.

Thank you to Ever King and StoryOrigin for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
