Twenty years ago, a young woman was convicted of murdering her best friend in a bizarre ritual. Now, when her daughter’s best friend’s body is found posed the same way, the small town of Cañon City, CO, is forced to relive the nightmare. FBI Agent Danica Burns is the only one willing to consider that the troubled teenager is innocent. But the closer she circles to the truth, the more her own ghosts threaten to cloud her judgement.
What really happened out there in the mountains? And will Danica be able to stop the killer before another life is lost?
I really loved Smoke Screen, it was a departure from this author’s outstanding Sci-Fi adventures, but written with her usual strong but flawed and always interesting characters. This was a murder mystery, where Danica Burns, an FBI agent, is sent to help the sheriff in a small Colorado town investigate an unusual situation with the murder of a teenage girl. It is a copy-cat of a murder found in the same place years ago and the main suspect in the current murder is the victim's best friend. This is a prequel to the Danica Burns series which will be set in the Pacific Northwest. I’m excited to read more of her story, since her background is highly unusual, raised in a religious cult and abused until she finally escaped as a teen, she had never been to school or out in the world until she met the FBI agent that became her mentor and boss.
