About the author

German Egyptologist and novelist Georg Moritz Ebers discovered the Egyptian medical papyrus, circa 1550 BC, named Ebers papyrus, at Luxor (Thebes) in the winter of 1873/74.

Ebers early conceived the idea of popularizing Egyptian lore by means of historical romances. Eine ägyptische Königstochter was published in 1864 and obtained great success. His subsequent works of the same kind—Uarda (1877), Homo sum (1878), Die Schwestern (1880), Der Kaiser (1881), of which the scene is laid in Egypt at the time of Hadrian, Serapis (1885), Die Nilbraut (1887), and Kleopatra (1894), were also well received, and did much to make the public familiar with the discoveries of Egyptologists. Ebers also turned his attention to other fields of historical fiction—especially the 16th century (Die Frau Bürgermeisterin, 1882; Die Gred, 1887)—without, however, attaining the success of his Egyptian novels.

Если честно, то я даже не знаю что писать в отзыве на эту книгу. Тут просто не за что зацепиться.
Но я попробую, т.к. не смотря ни на что, книжка скорее понравилась, чем нет.
По жанру это скорее исторический роман. Я не верю, что так всё и было, но вот сама обстановка, судя по описаниям жизни и трудам автора, похожа на правду.
Из названия следует, что речь пойдёт только об императоре. Но здесь рассказывается и о жизни людей, на которых он повлиял даже не своим существованием, а просто когда мимо проходил. Я даже удивилась, что в конце книги у большинства героев жизнь сложилась вполне удачно (интересно, это считается спойлером?).
По самому сюжету: есть император, есть его любимец, который своим существованием смягчает слишком жёсткую и властную натуру императора. Есть императрица, которая вообще непонятно зачем живёт (снова спойлер?). Есть обычные люди, которые стараются делать своё дело, причём делать хорошо. У них размеренная жизнь, которая нарушается приездом императора. Но и его жизнь тоже теперь зависит от них, пусть и непрямо. Действия, поступки правителя, реакции окружающих на них - всё это приводит к событиям, которые влияют потом на всю жизнь.
Из минусов книги можно назвать неторопливость повествования. Здесь описывается жизнь обычных людей того времени. Просто жизнь, со всеми радостями и горестями.
Однако, это же можно записать и плюс. Т.к. знакомит с жизнью, бытом, переживаниями простых и не очень людей во времена правления Рима. Что двигало ими, как они разговаривали, какие у них были понятия о морали и общепринятых ценностях. В этом плане, книжка интересная.
Посоветую ли я к прочтению? Пожалуй, нет. Этот жанр на любителя. Кто любит и захочет, тот сам найдёт и прочитает, остальным будет не так интересно.
