A Rocky Christmas: small town holiday romance

Rate this book
When Sydney Wilson, New York's most in-demand architect, is forced to return to her small town Colorado home of Slate Ridge due to a family emergency, the last thing she expects is to find love. Especially since she's sworn off men for the last decade, thanks to the darkness she suffered through with her ex.

The universe clearly has other plans, though, when an unlikely connection forms between her and her parents' live-in ranch hand, Chase Phillips. But behind the country accent and easy smile, Chase is hiding darkness of his own. There aren't many people he opens up to, but for some reason, he's drawn to his boss's daughter. Something about her makes him want to spill all his secrets—to reach inside his chest and hand his heart over to her.

Between the late-night meetups in the kitchen, and a day spent at the dock—that just so happens to be both of their favorite places—they grow closer.

But when a snow storm causes Sydney’s flight back home to get canceled, leading to the pair spending Christmas together, their kiss under the mistletoe is just the beginning…

“Even on the darkest of days, I’ve found a reason to smile.”

♥❀♥---ARC Review---❀♥❀

I can absolutely see this book being well received by its intended audience, even though I don’t think I personally fall into that category. While it wasn’t quite my cup of tea, there were aspects of the story that were undeniably well done: particularly the way grief and healing were handled. The author approached those themes with care and nuance, and I really appreciated how Chase and Sydney’s traumas, though vastly different, allowed them to find comfort and understanding in one another. That shared healing created a genuinely beautiful foundation for their relationship.

“For the first time in five years, it feels like my heart is actually beating again. It’s not broken or bruised, it’s whole.”

Chase was easily a standout for me. He was such a tender, patient, and protective presence, and I couldn’t help but adore him. Sydney, on the other hand, brought a strong, confident energy to the story that balanced him nicely. Together, they felt very compatible, both as friends and as romantic partners, and their connection made sense on multiple levels. I also appreciated that, despite the title, the book wasn’t overly focused on Christmas. The holiday existed more as a backdrop, which made the story feel accessible and readable year-round, even for readers who aren’t particularly drawn to seasonal romances.

“I might not be able to give her the world, but I can sure as hell give her my heart…She’s everythin’ to me, sir.”

Where the book lost me, unfortunately, was in the pacing. It felt almost as if two separate stories had been stitched together: the first detailing how Chase and Sydney met, and the second focusing on their second-chance romance. That division made the reading experience feel disjointed, and the emotional momentum didn’t carry through as smoothly as I would have liked. I struggled with some of the choices both characters made during their time apart, as I didn’t always understand how those decisions served their personal growth or advanced their relationship in a meaningful way.

“Couldn’t she tell how much I loved her? I may not have said it out of fear of scaring her away but I did. With every broken and bruised piece of my heart, I loved her. I never f*cking stopped.”

Because of those pacing issues, the opening portion of the book, roughly the first third, hit much harder emotionally than the latter half. I found myself wishing that same emotional intensity had been sustained through the end. Additionally, most of the side characters failed to leave a lasting impression. Sydney’s parents stood out the most, with brief moments of interest from Paul and Katie, largely because their romance hinted at something compelling. Overall, while the story had strong emotional themes and a lovable MMC, the structural issues kept it from fully landing for me.

I had the pleasure of getting an alpha copy of A Rocky Christmas. Thank you, Leigh!

I’m not even sure where to start. This is Leigh’s debut novel, and I cannot even begin to describe how amazing it is. For a debut novel, it has the workings of someone who’s been writing for years and years, and I’m not just saying that because we’re friends. She’s truly a spectacular writer.

Chase and Sydney couldn’t be more opposite, but that’s what I love about them. They stole my heart, flaws and all. It’s the fact that their flaws were perfectly executed and their growth was done so well. They make each other whole, and I love that. I’m a sucker for a good love story, and this book gave us just that.

I will say, this is an emotional read as well. My heart strings have been tugged on VIOLENTLY throughout this entire book. I’m billing Leigh for my tears and heartbreak.

I truly do believe we have a masterpiece on our hands. And boy am I ready to read even more if she ever decides to write additional books. Hell, I’d read Leigh’s grocery list for all I care.

Overall, an amazing debut novel. I cannot wait to see this book get the hype it deserves.

If you're looking for a great book to cozy up with for the holidays, consider taking a journey with Sydney Wilson back to her home in small town Colorado.

I absolutely DEVOURED this book. I was smiling, giggling, kicking my little feet and turned into a massive puddle of tears more than once.

Leigh has perfectly mastered the cozy small town vibes. The characters are so beautiful and layered. I love the growth. I love the friendships. I love the romance. The spice was *chef's kiss*. A Rocky Christmas is everything you could ever want from a Hallmark movie but SIGNIFICANTLY better and the main characters actually, you know 😏

I cannot wait for everyone to meet Sydney and Chase!

READ IF YOU LOVE:

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Sydney at first. She took some time to warm up to, being pretty guarded. But she eventually softened up and knew when she was being unreasonable, and once I found out why she was so prickly, it all made sense. There were times she let stress (particularly with work) and other negative emotions get the best of her, which was honestly grating, but much of her development was about learning to let people in.

Chase saw the good in people, which amazed me because of the grief he suffered and continued to suffer. He always felt things deeply and saw right through Sydney. I just wished he saw the good in himself as well.

Although they had their problems, these two made a good pair. They suited each other not just as romantic partners, but because they understood one another. I thought the romance was a bit fast in the first half, but then I realized what the Leigh was going for, so it didn’t bother me. The second half included a time jump that took me a minute to realize, but it was clear that the effect Sydney and Chase had on each other was strong, even when they were apart.

As for the setting and plot as a whole, I can never say no to small town, found family charm. The mental health representation was also equal parts raw and healing. Overall, it’s chock full of cozy vibes for the holiday season—warm, with a good amount of emotion and angst thrown in to tug at your heartstrings.

Before I dive into my thoughts, please note the trigger warnings: this book does contain references to DV, SA & loss of a child.

When you hear “holiday romance” and learn that the FMC is trying to escape her past by moving to New York, only to return home years later and meet her parents’ in-house ranch hand (our MMC), you think you know exactly where this Hallmark-style romcom is headed. But you’d be wrong.

Sydney was a compelling FMC. She was strong and confident, yet deeply guarded, and it takes time to understand why. At first, you may find yourself struggling to warm to her, but once you learn the reasons behind her walls, everything clicks. At times, it did feel like some of the stress she carried could have been alleviated before reaching breaking point, but that, too, made sense in the context of her journey. As both Sydney - and the reader - learn how she begins to let people in, those stresses slowly dissipate, which is incredibly satisfying to witness.

Chase, with his own heartbreaking backstory, was portrayed beautifully. I genuinely don’t think I could be half the person he is if I’d endured what he has. His character radiated rawness, patience, and quiet strength, with an overwhelming desire to give back and protect those around him. His compassion and emotional maturity were standout qualities.

While both characters had their flaws, they worked exceptionally well together, and I found myself constantly rooting for them. Chemistry in romance novels can usually be felt, but Leigh’s mental health representation - handled with such care and sensitivity -truly struck a personal chord with me. Beyond the romance, their connection was rooted in mutual understanding. It reminded me of how my partner and I simply clicked when it came to communication and emotional awareness - that feeling of being understood without needing to explain, because the other person has been there too. Even when traumas differ, finding comfort and safety in one another is incredibly powerful.

I also really appreciated the way the timeline was handled. This wasn’t your typical romcom followed by a neat twelve-month time jump. Instead, the story spans multiple years, allowing you to truly get to know the characters. It felt realistic - no perfection, no instalove - just messy, human growth.

At its core, this was very much a story about the journey: finding yourself, learning to heal, and allowing happiness back in. With plenty of emotion, humour, and a touch of spice along the way, it was a deeply moving read.

As someone who is an absolute sucker for small-town, found-family romances, this was completely up my street. So if, like me, you’re looking for a warm, cosy, emotional, heart-tugging read with a holiday setting (but not an over-the-top holiday plot), then this one is definitely for you.

Thank you so much to Leigh & BookBuzzPR for sending me an ecopy to read and review.

Thank you Leigh Jones for providing this ARC of A Rocky Christmas in exchange for my review.

This was a heavy read at times, the kind that asks you to sit with uncomfortable feelings rather than skim past them. But despite the weight, it leaves you wrapped in warmth by the end, like finally exhaling after holding your breath for far too long.

The structure will not be for everyone, but as a devoted dual POV enthusiast, I loved it. Watching the romance grow felt natural and earned, and even more importantly, watching it end avoided the usual romance novel theatrics. No dramatic last minute airport dash. No sudden personality transplant. Just real conversations, real break ups, and consequences that actually stick.

The emotional beats were handled with care. Grief, sadness, and fear are explored beautifully and with a lot of grace, never feeling exploitative or rushed. It felt grounded and honest, which made the moments of spice, when they did appear, feel like a little cherry on top rather than the main event.

My only real gripe comes at the end. I was not fully sold on the ten year time skip. I would have loved to see more of Sydney’s journey after leaving New York, especially whether she created a new business venture back home and how that growth unfolded. That said, the epilogue was still genuinely sweet and left the story on a hopeful, satisfying note.

Overall, this is a quietly powerful Christmas read that values emotional truth over glittery clichés. Come prepared for heaviness, stay for the warmth.

Solid four stars.

Didn’t love the ending as much as I loved the beginning. It’s hard to put my finger on when exactly it happens, but at some point the story seems to lose some steam and though Leigh Jones takes time to tie off all relevant threads of the story, it lacks the emotional deepness of the beginning.
Which is fine. There’s no unnecessary drama at that point. But I don’t know, I’d just expected a little more.

As a Hallmark Christmas Junkie, I would like to point out that this story takes place around Christmast time, but I wouldn’t consider it a “Christmas” novel.

On the other hand, major props to Leigh Jones for managing to pull off the whole ‘Characters keeping dark secrets’-trope with grace.
Personally, I think it's one of the most annoying (romance) storytelling devices, because 99/100 times it sets entirely too high expectations and the drama is all whipped eggwhite that collapses as soon as actual conversation is introduced between MCs, but A Rocky Christmas has a definite pay-off and it will break your heart.

From there the story moves on to the next phase of romancing, and I LOVE that the characters stay respectful of each other. I love the maturity of both characters, and the lack of emotional manipulation.

All in all a very enjoyable read that is well worth the time.

A Rocky Christmas is a small town holiday romance that will literally make you feel like cozying up by the fireplace. I enjoyed this story so much.
Sydney, at first, came across a little harsh. The way she was reacting about her dad calling her and not wanting to take the call, I thought there would be some serious family issues coming up in the story. But as the story continues, we learn that Sydney has amazing, sweet, loving, parents and the issue wasn't with them at all.
After learning about her mom's accident, she rushes home to be there for them which is where she meets Chase. At first, she's skeptical about Chase. She questioned his motives for why he was there, living with her parents to begin with. But after reading both of their stories and understanding why they both were being the way they were, I loved the story even more. Chase's story is heart breaking and Sydney's story is a gut wrenching. But I love them together. I think they balance each other really well. Chase standing up for Sydney without her even knowing the first time was so sweet. He didn't do it because he wanted to be her hero. He did it because he genuinely cared and thats where I melted.
The author did a great with both of their stories. The story flows really well and is an enjoyable read.
I definitely recommend giving this one a read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just finished A Rocky Christmas by Leigh Jones, and I’m still wrapped up in cozy holiday feelings. This book delivers all the Christmas romance vibes—small-town charm, snowy Colorado scenery, witty banter, swoony moments, and plenty of heart. Right from the start, Leigh immerses you in a festive world that feels warm and lived-in, with friendships that are genuine and characters you can’t help but root for. Chase and Sydney make such a fun opposites-attract pairing, and I loved how flawed and real they both felt. Their chemistry is palpable, the banter is playful, and the romance strikes a perfect balance of sweet, emotional, and just the right amount of spice. Honestly, it feels like a Hallmark Christmas movie, but with more depth and heart.

This book is also deeply emotional—I laughed, swooned, and even cried more than once, and my heartstrings were tugged on throughout. Some moments felt heavy enough to slow me down a bit, but the emotional payoff was absolutely worth it. Leigh nails the cozy small-town vibe and delivers impressive character growth—especially remarkable for a debut novel. You can feel the care and heart poured into every page. A Rocky Christmas is a warm, heartfelt holiday romance that’s perfect for curling up with when you want something festive, emotional, and genuinely charming. ❄️❤️

✨“I’m glad I met you too. I don’t really believe in fate, but it feels like I was meant to have you in my life.”✨
✨“If you want to kiss me you damn well better do it, no matter what. You understand me?” ✨

A Rocky Christmas seems like the typical holiday romance and boy was I wrong..
This book was heartbreaking, had trauma, was sweet, funny, and SPICY all wrapped into one.
I did not expect the layers and character backstories that came from these pages. It was beautiful.
It has dual POV which I loved, especially when things were going DOWN. (….I’m looking at you Leigh for doing that to me 🤣)

Sydney is running from her past and her hometown and moves to New York. Years later she finally comes back home for Christmas, when she meets her parent’s ranch hand, Chase. He has his own story.. but meeting Sydney changes his life. She’s everything to him. And honestly he is probably one of my new favorites 🥵 So thank you Chase for being the MMC you are. 🔥
From then on you see them falling in love, healing each other, and working through REAL LIFE over the span of two Christmas’s.

My heart is so full with this story. This will be one I reread every holiday. I’m completely obsessed with them. “Chaseny” forever. ❤️🤍

Ive read this novel before. but on episode. it was AMAZING even then. So when Leigh announced this book i was SO excited. I could NOT wait to get it in my hands. The episode version did not dissapoint but this novel. OUTDID it all. its been awhile since i first read it in on episode. And everything that did book gave me is heartbreak, sadness, overwhelming love. and BOY did I LOVE it. Chase and Sydney's story is REAL and this book is their journey. Chase's pain i could feel through the pages. it broke my heart, again but even better🥹💔 2 broken people finding each other and healing each other. sydney is a boss lady and i love that about her. she knows what she can and cant do. and i LOVE that. bit even a boss needs somebody and chase is sydneys person. and this whole book was them finding each other after gettinf both their hearts ripped out. it was so beautifully written!🥹💛 and now their story is over and it was such a beautiful expierence to see their story like this. i cannot wait to see what Leigh does next. ill be in line!🫡 I honestly dont know what to say about Sydney and Chase other then that that they are the SOUL in soulmates. their souls needed and eill forever need each other🥹🥹🥹

A Rocky Christmas felt like curling up with a warm blanket while snow falls softly outside. This story had such a gentle, comforting vibe that wrapped around my heart from the very first pages. It’s the kind of holiday read that doesn’t rush you—it invites you to slow down and feel the season.

What I loved most was how emotionally grounded the story felt. The characters weren’t perfect or flashy; they were real, tender, and beautifully human. Their journey carried that quiet hope that Christmas stories do best—healing, forgiveness, and the reminder that love often shows up when we need it most, even if we don’t realize it right away.

Leigh Jones writes with so much warmth and care that every moment felt intentional. The small details, the emotional beats, and the subtle romance all came together in a way that felt sincere and heartfelt rather than over-the-top. It wasn’t about grand gestures—it was about connection, comfort, and choosing love.

A Rocky Christmas left me with a soft smile and that cozy feeling you want from a holiday romance. If you’re looking for a sweet, emotionally comforting Christmas read that feels like home, this one is absolutely worth picking up. 🎄✨

Cozy Angst, Christmas Edition

OK besties… let’s talk about "A Rocky Christmas". Sydney? Whew. My first thoughts... what a B!+ch with a capital B and I was side-eyeing her HARD 😒. But once the layers peel back? My heart cracked wide open. Both Sydney and Chase carry some heavy trauma, and listen... get your tissues ready, Besties 😢.

The angst? UNREAL. The anxiety had me pacing like… will they? won’t they? Had me yelling at my Kindle "OMG! JUST GO FOR IT ALREADY!!" Chase is sexy cowboy and pure cinnamon-roll energy with a shattered past, and the way he falls first? Swoon.

Despite the emotional gut punches, this was the coziest small-town Christmas romance. Snowed-in vibes, forced proximity, hurt x comfort... absolute perfection. This sweet, emotional read was exactly what I needed to cleanse my dark romance palate. Besties... Add. To. Your. TBR. 🎄✨

My Ratings: ⭐ 4.5/5 ▪︎ 🥵 2/5

Thank you, Leigh for the beta read!!

I very much enjoyed reading this book. I had never done a beta read, so I was nervous I wasn't going to like it and have to continue reading it, but I did not have that problem!!

Sydney and Chase are perfect little Hallmark-esque characters although they both have their own issues they deal with. Jones touches on very sensitive topics in a respectful manner, and I was never once uncomfortable reading it. But please check the trigger warnings for those who are sensitive.

The spice was very well-written as well! Sometimes the scenes can feel as though the writer is trying to do too much, but I don't feel like Jones did that at all. I was itching for more between the two.

The male side characters were a little bit forgettable, but that honestly is probably just my problem.

This was such a good Christmas read; I really enjoyed it overall.

If you are looking for a good Christmas/small town romance this is the book for you.

🎄Think of it like a hallmark type story with a dash of smut, a sprinkle of angst and topped with pining and you’ve got the perfect combination.🎄

Chase and Sydney’s story is a rocky ride but it is so worth it in the end. Sydney is very guarded (for good reason) and Chase is the wrecking ball that comes into her life unexpectedly and begins breaking those walls down and shows her what real love can look like. This is a bit of a slow burn but wants that fire ignites, it is beyond hot. 🥵

Chase is also battling his own demons but when he’s around Sydney, things don’t seem so unbearable. This is the true definition of finding your person and being willing to do anything for them.

Their love story is beautiful, heartbreaking and hard fought.

Leigh Jones did a wonderful job and her debut novel is top tier small town, Christmas love.

SYDNEY MAE AND CHASE ARE *FINALLY* HEREEEEE!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!

Leigh has brought their story full circle from her Episode days to a full length novel that everyone finally gets to read in her debut novel!!!! I cannot believe they're finally out in the world!!

Their whole story is amazing and their strength they give each other to grow and become themselves again was so sweet and natural. It never felt forced between them, they were just acting on instinct to be their for one another.

Slight spoiler alert, I can't forget to mention our special characters who helped bring them together, May and Macie. I loved them so much!!

I have read this story more than a few times of the years and every time, I've laughed, swooned and teared up at their story.

Please, make sure to check the trigger warnings before you start this story, but give this spicy, small town Christmas story a chance!!

Thank you to BookBuzz PR for the arc of A Rocky Christmas, the debut novel for Leigh Jones!!

Sydney swore she’d never return to her hometown after a traumatic relationship—until her mum’s accident leaves her no choice. Back home, she finds a handsome cowboy helping her parents on the farm and doing his best to steal her heart. Fighting her feelings seems smart… until it becomes impossible. But with her life waiting elsewhere, what happens when Sydney has to leave? 🤠💔

This book was incredibly cute—a heartfelt story about two people who are both afraid to love , finding their way to each other under difficult circumstances. Chase is the ultimate labrador cowboy: dependable, charming, rugged, and ridiculously handsome. Honestly, who wouldn’t fall for him? But beneath that easy charm is a tragic past he’s still healing from, just as Sydney is working through her own. Watching them slowly open up and learn to trust again was truly lovely. 🤍🤠

Firstly a huge thank you to Leigh Jones for the ARC read. I have to say for a debut novel, this is absolutely spectacular!

It touches on heavier topics, so please check the trigger warnings and read with caution. As someone who has been through elements of what Riley has, this has been written with so much care.

A Rocky Christmas was a perfect festive read that had me smiling and giggling like a school girl! I devoured this book in 24 hours and couldn’t put it down! 🩷

I absolutely loved Sydney and Chase, their late night kitchen meet ups, letting their walls come down and trust each other and who doesn’t love a happy ending!

I cannot wait for everyone to meet Sydney and Chase🥹

- Forced Proximity
- He falls first

What a heartfelt read! There was such much pain and trauma but on top of everything there was perseverance and love and don’t we all want a love story that overcomes all our baggage?

Two people who carry the wait of past pain come together and begin to heal. But so much can come between you when you are stuck in the past. Stuck in your head. Stuck in your heart.

There are triggers here so please be kind to yourself.
Spice is a 2 for me. It’s there and it’s spicy but this book is mostly just story.

Sydney has her walls up due to her past, Chase works on her family’s farm as a ranch hand and he also has his own demons. After meeting Sydney became everything to Chase and I loved watching them heal each other and fall in love. And I must say Chase is everything and he becomes one of my favorite MMC, this book is spicy, emotional and funny and this book is definitely a must read. WOW.
I absolutely loved this and couldn't put it down! I really loved the sexual tension between Sydney and Chase throughout which kept me on my toes and guessing will they/won't they and how much they cared about each other regardless of what happened. I really loved Chase's background and how polar opposite it is to Sydney. The writing was great, the plot kept me turning the pages and I'm absolutely obsessed with this book! I don't have a bad thing to say about this and I'll definitely be re-reading again!

This was an ARC read and I feel that if you love a second-chance romance with emotional intensity, this will be the book for you. The MMC and FMC had vastly different traumas from their pasts and the author truly captured how they found healing and created a beautiful foundation in their relationship. The MMC – Chase – was patients and protective and the FMC – Sydney – was strong and fierce. The emotional depth they built together was really beautiful. I did struggle with the beginning of the book but overall this was a solid 4 stars for me.

This book definitely had my emotions swirling. Nothing played out the way I expected, and for a Christmas romance, that lack of predictability was actually refreshing. It felt real and grounded rather than following the usual holiday-romance formula.

Chase, the MMC, is a full-on cinnamon roll… steadfast, sincere, and completely true to who he is. He was an easy character to root for. Sydney, the FMC, definitely is more black cat, and has a reason for being away and not wanting to return.. I really appreciated how the story explored deeper themes tied to trauma for both main characters. Their experiences were handled thoughtfully and helped explain why they are the way they are, adding emotional weight to the story.

I ultimately landed at three stars because I wished there had been more depth in the HEA. After so much build-up and emotional storytelling, the ending felt a bit too neat, as though everything fell into place a little too quickly.

Overall, this was an emotional, refreshing holiday read that steps outside the typical Christmas romance mold, even if I wanted just a bit more from the ending.

This was a very emotional but loving holiday read. I absolutely fell in love with these guys. Sidney is an ice queen. But as you get to know her you’ll understand why. And she definitely sheds that persona once you get into her story. And Chase, what a handsome guy that comes with his orc dark past. These two have sparks between them but their pasts are keeping them from connecting.
I melted when they started healing and did finally connect. It was the best ever.
This story was emotionally heartfelt. Loving and warm. I enjoyed this book cover to cover.

Wow this book was a page turner from start to finish. I read this in one sitting i just could not put it down at all. i love good found family and a small town romance two of my favorite tropes. The pace of this book was great. The FMC Sydney at first was a bit guarded and stand off-ish when she returned to the small town but once we got to understand why my heart cracked. Chase sees the good in people even when his and Sydney’s first encounter at the air port was not the greatest. Chase has his own demons and battles he has to face but i love that even though he has had it rough he stills tries to see the best in everyone. Chase and Sydney are totally opposite people but they bring out the best in each other. Chase gets bonus points for punching a certain someone in the face. This book was a cozy read as well as an emotional book the mental health representation was written incredibly. Please check trigger warnings before reading.

I received this book as an ARC in return for my honest review

I am so deeply invested in these characters and everything the lovely @storiesbyleigh poured into this absolute MASTERPIECE.

I loved Sydney and Chase so much. I related heavily to parts of Syd’s background, and Chase’s upbringing was incredibly inspiring and heart-tugging… He’s been through so much, always thinking the worst of himself, yet still remains such a genuine, good man - and that completely stole my heart! 😭

This was such a lovely and touching romance, the fact that two people who needed to be loved found one another is beautiful and the ending was so beautiful I’m so grateful to have received this beautiful story as an arc. Please do check the triggers before reading as it has some themes that may be upsetting for some reads.
