Filthy Rich Fae #2

Fallen Court

Rate this book
One fae prince. One deadly bargain. And a mortal caught between desire and damnation.

Cate thought she knew darkness. As a trauma nurse, she had witnessed the worst of humanity. But nothing―not the blood, the violence, or the despair―could have prepared her for the fae underworld. A realm where beauty is a weapon, desire is a trap, and mortals who stray too far don’t return.

She almost didn’t.

Until Lachlan Gage―shadowed, ruthless, and feared even among his own kind―bound her to him with a deadly bargain. As the prince of New Orleans and ruler of the Nether Court, he is as much a curse as he is salvation. And with the Wild Hunt at his heels and war stirring between the fae courts, even his protection may not be enough to save her.

Because Cate is more than just his reluctant mortal. She is wanted. Coveted. And the prince of the Hallow Court will do anything to claim her.

But something ancient is rising in the dark, warping fae magic into something unnatural and cruel. It has nothing to do with Cate’s past―or so she tells herself. Even though the ring left behind by her mother whispers otherwise.

There is only one thing more dangerous than the fae who would kill for her.

The fae who would die for her.

And Lachlan Gage has never been one to lose.

“You are the only thing that chases the darkness away. You are the light in my world.”

This series is so addicting! I can’t say I loved this quite as much as the first book, but as second books go, this was a solid read! There may be some mild spoilers for book one here, so read at your own risk. Book one left off on a major cliffhanger, so this book started off in the thick of things and was pretty action packed all the way through. We get more world building and see more crossover between the Fae and the other Paranormal creatures, which I loved.

Lach is on the run from the Wild Hunt, so he’s looking for magical solutions that will give him more time and protect him from them while he tries to locate Cate. He is desperate to find her and is somewhat easily manipulated by his enemies as a result. There is some misdirection and they are both fed false information, but when they are finally reunited it did feel a little anticlimactic to me. I think I was hoping for more of a grand rescue. For whatever reason, the portion of the book immediately following their reunification felt a little detached from the rest of the story to me, but from there, things do pick back up, and many more characters come into play.

Lach had historically been a closed off/broody type character, so I enjoyed watching him open up and share his secrets with Cate in this book. He kept some information from her at one point to try to protect her, but quickly changed his tune. He was clearly all in on their relationship and laid all his chips out on the table. We also get more development of Cate’s relationship with Ciara and a few other characters which gave the story more of a “found family” vibe.

I’ve enjoyed this series a lot more than Filthy Rich Vampires, but there is a lot of potential as their worlds begin to collide. If the author wrote a series about the witches or the wolves, I would read those too! I love the world she’s created and it’s fun to read about Fae in an Urban Fantasy setting for a change. I know there are lots of books out there similar to this, but most of them are older so it’s nice to read a more modern take on urban fantasy with Fae.

There were a lot of moving pieces to this story and no one character had all the information, so it was an exciting read with lots of reveals, betrayals, and yet another cliffhanger. Based on what the ending foreshadowed, book three should be good!

And now, we wait… 😭

“You can question my authority. You can question my decisions. You can even question our future, but you cannot question that. I love you.”

after the ending of the previous book, Cate is trying to figure out the origins of her ring and why she can’t seem to take it off. Lachlan is still on the run, but they manage to reunite and there’s PLENTY of groveling on Lach’s part. im begging and pleading for Ciara and Roark to get a book, the tension between those two was distracting me in the best way. i continue to be frustrated with Cate’s brother, he’s just so reckless and needs to learn that his actions have consequences. the romance between Lachlan and Cate reached new heights, im a bit obsessed with the lengths he goes to in order to prefect his relationship. Cate’s situation towards the end was predictable tbh but there was another element that involves her brother that will be very interesting moving forward. this series is just so addicting and im already dying for the next one cause all the cliffhangers are out to kill me at this point.

“It’s pretty romantic,” Ciara said after the long silence, “if you think about it.” “What?” I asked. “That man would die for you and smile with his last breath.”

So listen... Filthy Rich Fae: Fallen Court fully took my heart, stomped on it, and then was like, “See you in book three, babe.” And I, for some unhinged reason, said THANK YOU?? Geneva Lee, ma’am, you are personally responsible for my blood pressure right now.

This book picked up immediately where book one ended and did not let up. I swear I was hanging on for every twist, betrayal, secret, and emotionally charged moment between Cate and Lach. The way this man loves?? Unhinged. Obsessive. Alpha. Secretive. And Cate?? She’s that girl. Loyal, powerful, mouthy—just the right amount of unhinged herself and will sacrifice it all for the ones she loves. They’re chaos and comfort all at once and I love them so bad it hurts.

Also. That ending? Geneva, be honest, do you like causing emotional damage or is it just a hobby? Because I closed the book and immediately started trying to figure out HOW I am supposed to wait for book three when you left me like that?!
The worldbuilding continues to be top-tier fantasy crack. The stakes are high, the magic is darker, the secrets are spicier. And we’re getting deeper into the courts, the Wild Hunt, and possibly some enemies-to-lovers side plot that has my antenna UP.

Basically, I have 17 theories, no patience, and a full-blown book hangover. If you’re not reading this series yet, add it to your TBR immediately. Fae, spice, betrayal, and the kind of obsessive romance that makes you question your standards? YES PLEASE.

The Vibes it Gives:
Morally gray fae
Bonded but emotionally messy
Betrayal in every corner
Ride-or-die romance
Spicy secret powers
“Touch her and die” energy
Found family (but dangerous)
Dark fantasy with romance front and center

2.5🌟 I'm not sure if this was second book syndrome or if it was just so dang boring. It felt like work getting through this. A major fall from grace from the first book, but more in line with the FRV series, which I read but did not enjoy.

NO. FREAKING. WAY!!

Ahhh, not me thinking this was a completed duology 😭
Got to the end of this book and was DEVASTATED to find out it wasn’t a duology at all, and very much NOT completed…
AND that book three is OVER A YEAR AWAY from being released 🫠

Boooo to that, as I need it NOW!

Really enjoying the series so far — the New Orleans setting along with fae mafia, vampires, AND witches, (with a smidge of werewolves) all set over Halloween, the perfect start to my fall reads!

Ugh kindle unlimited has this listed as book 2 of 2. Welp it’s not. When I say I anticipated this book 😩🫨 Major cliffhanger AGAIN! Please please don’t take over a year for the third book and wrap it up.
Ok enough gripping. I really love this series! It’s very comparable to ACOTAR, fast paced, world building, steamy characters of all kinds, dark magic, and major secrets hidden from those who hold the secret! We unveil secret’s I kind of suspected in book one. But plot twist on the mole broke my heart but doesn’t surprise me. So much betrayal. Found family. Mates. Touch her and die. Unknown magical powers.

Holy repetitive vocabulary, Batman! Geneva Lee doesn't seem to have a large vocabulary and she uses a lot of odd expressions while over using it. Does your heat beat in your chest or against your chest? I feel the first is what I would prefer, but Lee chooses the latter. Too me, that sounds like the heart is outside the body, beating against the chest.

And oh, the melodrama! As much as I enjoy the plot and want to know the ending, I find myself tiring of the reoccurring self sabotage and the information withholding that causes 90% of the characters' problems. Followed by the same physical reactions. Cate's stomach is always churning or twisting. She is often crossing her arms over her chest and lifting her chin or there is bile rising in her throat. Lachlan is always grinding his teeth and growling, mostly because he has neglected to provide appropriate advice or has bullied the people he should be recruiting and trusting. Cate's brother Channing is still dumb as a stick and hasn't learned a goddamn thing. As I said, tiresome.

And yet I want to know about Cate and her ring. Is that ring actually related to the extinct fae Terra court? If so, why did she inherit it? Will Lach find some way to elude the Wild Hunt permanently? He did the crime, but can he avoid the punishment? Cliffhanger alert! Once again it ends with one.

I really wish my library had purchased a print copy of this title. Listening to the audio version I couldn't avoid the cheesiness of the writing. I couldn't miss the awful exaggerated descriptions and melodramatic plot. When you're listening, you can't miss the relentless repetition of the same phrases and the characters repeatedly blaming themselves for the same problems. I can ignore the worst of that when I'm reading a paper copy. Now I have to wonder if I will read book three. I'd like to claim that there's no way, but I know myself better than that. If my library buys it, I will likely borrow it out of sheer stubbornness to find out how things end.

unexpectedly disappointed

I was so looking forward to this book after reading the first one. I am so in love with the characters and the story. This second book fell flat. It felt like a filler book. Although we do get answers to a lot of questions, there are so many more left unanswered. To be expected so that there’s something to uncover in book three. What I didn’t like was the ending. Treachery from an unexpected character. Not my favorite. Also why is Cate such an idiot!!???

1.75 stars - ugh, disappointing. This read like it was written without an outline: not disjointed so much as completely aimless. At 65% I started to feel trapped because I had invested so much time and nothing had happened. It’s like I signed up for a 5k and got half way through the marathon before I thought to back out. At that point I wanted to commit out of principle, but dang. Way too long. Kind of like this explanation of how long it was. So much of what happened was the characters being mad at each other and then apologizing, but it made no sense why they were mad half the time. Like wait, what did he do wrong? Even the end couldn’t revive it for me.

Overall, 3.5 stars. The series is still entertaining; there was a little bit more plot development in this book and introduction of new characters. As much as I want Lachlan and Cate to have their happily ever after, I don't like Lach's plot armor. He's destined for death but yet he won't die.

I stand by my last review of this being a good starter romantasy series, it's easy to read and not too complex.

Wow!!! After that ending I’m completely floored!! There was shock, awe, and tears. This was even better than book 1!

Book 2 picks up right where book 1 ended - Cate finds herself trapped by someone she thought was a friend and Lach is on the run from the Wild Hunt. They both are trying to find a way to each other and back to their families. On the way, alliances are tested and it’s unclear who can be trusted. Plus, there’s a group working in the shadows trying to bring Lach down.

The world really expanded with this book, which I enjoyed. I’m hoping more will be revealed about the magic and histories in the next. Cate and Lach’s relationship is also tested. I loved seeing how they continue to learn and grow with each other. Their love and devotion makes this a top tier romance.

Oh my goodness, the secrets and revelations! Some I guessed, others I didn’t see happening, and there’s still more to come! I was on edge, especially during the last third of the book. I have my theories and some things I’m hoping happen. I seriously can’t wait for book 3! Geneva Lee has me hooked after that ending!

Thank you so much to Entangled for the advanced copy!

I really struggled with the pacing and sense of time in this. The book starts off with Cate and Lachlan separated, and I felt like their need to find each other again should have been matched by desperation and a sense of urgency to deal with the Wild Hunt when they’re reunited. Instead, it felt like they were lazy and couldn’t be bothered, spending time ignoring each other instead of loving each other. Lach’s inability to communicate when it matters was extremely frustrating, especially when they would say that there just wasn’t time to discuss things, but then several days go by with no developments. By the end of the book, I didn’t feel like much had happened, and then too much was squeezed into an ending that felt like it was orchestrated by a bad cartoon villain.

I’m still trying to pick up my jaw from the floor. This book was dark, spicy, emotional, and twisty goodness all wrapped in a fast paced package. I love the way that there are so many subplots that entangle with the main storyline. It keeps the story interesting beyond our main characters. The cliffhangers for this series are killing me. I hate I have to wait so long for the next one now.

What a shame. I enjoyed the first book. I don’t even feel that annoyed by this because it was so boring. All they did is talk for most of the book. It felt like the story didn’t even progress at all. I was so over it. Took me so long to read a book I could usually polish off in 1-2 days but this took me 4 days.

The cliffhanger was lame and I won’t be reading book 3. Oh well…🤷🏽‍♂️

A cliff hanger!?!? I thought this was book 2/2 🫠

I was legitimately shocked at the betrayals going on here! While what happened with Kate was predictable I was still shook at the confirmations. Not as good as book 1 but still amazing!

“Fallen Court” came in hot with drama, betrayal, and the kind of twists that made me question everyone’s loyalty—including mine. 👑🔥🫣

One second I was swooning over the romance, the next I was emotionally spiraling like, how did we get here?! The chaos? Immaculate. The heartbreak? Rude. The betrayal? Personal. 💔😤💅

It was messy, magical, and totally unputdownable. Loved every dramatic minute of it. 🖤📚✨
