From Paris, with Butter: A hilarious, heartwarming Paris romance

Rate this book
Perfect for fans of Emily Henry and Emily in Paris, this delectable Parisian romance serves up mouthwatering pastries, sizzling chemistry, and one unforgettable love story you’ll savor to the last bite.

One hundred and eighty-seven proposals.

That’s how many love stories Margot Delcour has witnessed while waitressing at the Eiffel Tower’s most romantic restaurant. She spends her days orchestrating dream proposals and her nights baking rainbow-colored macarons, pillowy éclairs, and croissants so flaky they could break hearts. No one would ever guess her own love life is in ruins.

Enter Laurent Roche, a grumpy perfectionist who claims he can’t so much as boil an egg. When he moves in next door, Margot initially plans on giving him nothing more than a polite greeting and a plate of brown butter madeleines. That’s fine with Laurent. He moved to Paris to recover from a disastrous breakup and couldn’t be less interested in meeting anyone. But when he admits that he abandoned a career as a famed chef, Margot realizes she’s not the only one piecing her life back together.

Margot and Laurent know by now that getting close to someone is a recipe for disaster, but when a charity gala forces them to team up—her desserts, his kitchen expertise—their cooking sessions turn into something smoldering. Being a culinary dream team is easy. Admitting the pull between them? That’s risky. Because the closer Margot and Laurent get, the more their old wounds threaten to jeopardize the sweet future they deserve.

Absolutely enchanting! From Paris, with Butter by Christine DeSalvo is a delectable and heartwarming romance that swept me off my feet from the very first page. This book is a pure delight, expertly blending the magic of Paris, the irresistible allure of baking, and a deeply satisfying slow-burn love story.

Margot Delcour is the kind of heroine you immediately root for. She spends her days at the Eiffel Tower’s most romantic restaurant, orchestrating countless dream proposals, yet her own love life is decidedly in shambles. Her passion for baking those rainbow coloured macarons, pillowy éclairs, and croissants so flaky they could break hearts is palpable and adds such a wonderful, sensory layer to the story. You can almost smell the butter and sugar rising from the pages!

Enter Laurent Roche, the grumpy, perfectionist chef next door. Initially, both Margot and Laurent are nursing their own heartbreaks, determined to keep their distance and piece their lives back together alone. Their initial interactions are wonderfully awkward and charming, with Laurent's supposed inability to boil an egg contrasting hilariously with his true, storied past as a famed chef.

But as fate (and a fantastic charity gala) brings them together, their culinary collaboration ignites a spark that’s impossible to ignore. The tension between them is beautifully written a delicious slow burn as they navigate their past wounds and the undeniable pull they feel. Their cooking sessions aren't just about creating exquisite dishes; they're about rebuilding trust, healing old scars, and finding a recipe for a sweet future together.

Christine DeSalvo paints such a vivid picture of Paris, you can almost smell the freshly baked bread and feel the city's romantic pulse. This isn't just a romance; it's a story about second chances, about finding the courage to love again after heartbreak, and about the profound magic of food bringing people together. If you're looking for a book that will make you swoon, laugh, and perhaps even crave a croissant or two, this is it. A truly delightful read that I cannot recommend highly enough. Five stars simply aren't enough for this Parisian treat!

Mon dieu!,
My goodness what a great romance novel that takes place in the most romantic city in the world: Paris!
The author knows how to tell a story!
Enter characters Margot, a server at a Michelin star restaurant and former chef, Laurent. Their first meeting at the renowned restaurant falls flat and we are pleasantly surprised they end up as neighbors.
Oh, the tension is ripe! What follows is two people searching for their true career calling and end up falling in love. And in between we, as readers, are taken on a tour of Paris and delighted with authentic recipes Margot and Laurent make for each other. To that, add in compelling mean girl conflict, hilarious characters, family tensions, moving family memories, significant obstacles to overcome while never giving up, and, of course, adorable felines.
I really loved reading this novel. The research that must have gone into writing this was so evident and beautifully arranged for the reader to enjoy the tale.
It moved at a great pace, the romance was compelling, the dialogue was on point and so effective, and each character was so well developed.
Finally, who doesn’t love a great romance, buttery croissants, and kittens?!

This book, if nothing else, is, at the beginning, a reminder that people should treat their servers better.

Margot is the sunshine in this dynamic, and I can empathize so much with her because the sun is masking genuine grief and anxiety over both loss and her own perceived failures. She is easy to get along with right from the beginning because she, above all else (including herself) loves love and seeing joy in other people. She is a romantic at heart, but not a hopeless one.

Laurent initially is one whole heaping platter of grumpy when we meet him. In the beginning (which I won’t spoil), I actually loathed him. But perhaps every grump, or at least this one, might be hiding a killer ability to cook (but not bake) and some sun behind those gloomy clouds.

This plot was both soft and delicious, much like the meals described in this book. It happens slowly at first, then speeds up without running away with itself. There are conflicts and enough emotion to invest in without creating an overwrought, stretched-out, or boring feeling. I was invested in these two and their lives from the beginning.

Part of that comes from how Margot, Laurent, Yasmine and other characters are written (I’m looking at you, La Croix), and part of it comes from the setting.

I’ve been lucky enough to go to Paris and other parts of France, but this book is a love letter to the city and had me wanting to go back in a way that nothing ever has. My trip there, in all honesty, was a whirlwind (and not a pleasant one), but this book brought to mind the best parts of Paris —its history, its food, its people, and, yes, its romance. You will finish this book wishing you could go, and if only we could all have our very own Margot to guide us.

I enjoyed this book so much. It follows Margot, a waitress at Le Jules Verne, the very fancy restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. Margot has planned 187(!!) proposals for her job, but the poor girl's love life is in shambles. That is until she meets renowned chef (and perfectionist grump) Laurent Roche...No spoilers, but you'll enjoy their story!

This book is perfect if you love:
-Parisian vibes
-Delicious food descriptions that'll leave you drooling (the description of champagne-flavored macarons honestly made me go buy some)
-Grumpy/sunshine trope
-Enemies to lovers
-Witty banter
-Medium level of spice
-A great balance of funny and heart-tugging scenes
-Cute pets

I had so much fun reading this book. A love story, yes, but also a story of finding yourself in the world. I love the juxtaposition between Margot’s baking and Laurent finding his love of cooking once again. You root for these two, but you can also see why they were going in two different directions. They just needed to find themselves first to find their true love.

I’m so glad I found this book. It really brightened my weekend. Cant wait to read more from this author.

-Enemies to lovers
-Grumpy sunshine
-Some French swear words you probably haven't heard

It wasn't a bad book, it just fell flat for me. It was kind of boring. I don't think you can call something a "slow burn" when they are already having their first date 28% in.

This love story is definitely for Emily in Paris fans. This read has a strong Paris/chef romance from beginning to end. You meet Laurent and Margot and will love the enemies-to-lovers dynamic that develops in their story. I loved the characters' background, which gave the story meaning and purpose. It has some spice in some chapters, you will love the grumpy sunshine relationship develops throughout the story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Cute romance!

This was a cute workplace romance vibe! I really enjoyed the story progression, even though it took a little while before I got hooked into the storyline. Classic chef life and the drama that unfolds is maddening! Definitely cute - I'd recommend!!

From Paris, with Butter is the kind of romcom that sneaks up on you, light and funny at first, then quietly tender when you least expect it. Christine DeSalvo captures the feeling of Paris in every buttery detail: the cobbled streets, the scent of pastry, the ache of second chances. Margot and Laurent’s chemistry is pure slow-burn magic, grumpy meets sunshine, all wrapped in flour dust and flirtation.

The food descriptions alone deserve their own applause; every macaron, every simmering sauce feels like a love letter to joy itself. But underneath the charm is a story about healing, about rediscovering who you are when your first dreams crumble.

It’s warm without being syrupy, witty without trying too hard, and full of the kind of heart that lingers. Just maybe don’t read it hungry.

I was excited to read this one because I visited France recently and I was eager to relive some of my experiences through reading this book. I was not disappointed on that front! The author wrote beautifully about different spots in Paris and captured the feel of them through her words. I loved reading about the FMC’s meal in the Latin Quarter!

Of course food played a major role in the story, as you would expect based on the title. You can tell the author knows her way around French cooking and it was fun to read about different foods created or experienced by the characters in the book. However, I felt that at times the descriptions of ingredients and recipes got a little tedious and seemed to weigh the story down a bit.

As for the characters, I loved Margot‘s sunny disposition, and her initial run-in with the grumpy Laurent and his sister was fun to read. I felt like Laurent was a bit flat and their relationship somehow felt underdeveloped to me. Still, the storyline was entertaining and up until the end I was really enjoying it. But a couple of things marred the end of the story in my opinion and it felt sort of unfulfilling to me.

The author definitely has excellent writing ability. The dialogue is natural and easy to read. And the descriptions of Paris and French food make this a fun and unique read. The romance is sweet, and the spice is minimal and closed-door. Overall, this is a book I would recommend to anyone looking for a Hallmark-esque HEA romance!

Thank you to Book Sirens! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Margot Delcour works as a waiter in the renown Eifel Tower restaurant, Le Jules Verne, an ideal setting for marriage proposals. Margot prides herself in creating the perfect experience for these couples. The author lived in France for two years and it shows in her descriptions of the City of Love and Light. I particularly like this evenhanded description. “Paris, truthfully, is not always one of the best-smelling places in the world (its charms lie in other areas), but tonight the air was filled with the delicious scents of honeysuckle spilling out of neighborhood window boxes and the duck confit an elderly couple was sharing…”
After encountering a particularly horrible diner, Margot is distressed to discover the unpleasant-in-behavior, yet pleasing-to-the-eye gentleman is her new neighbor, Laurent Roche. He is recovering from a breakup and career failure.
The interactions between the couple are believable and amusing. She is a ray of sunshine to his gray rain cloud. The secondary characters are well-written. I especially like the restaurant’s head chef, Jean-Baptist La Croix, and Margot’s landlady, Madame Blanchet.
Many romances can be so mushy and cloy they nauseate. Others are overflowing with sex scenes that are unintentionally humorous or porn-star salacious. DeSalvo’s love scenes are both tasteful and emotionally satisfying.
I enjoyed this book very much and wholeheartedly recommend it. From Paris, with Butter by Christine DeSalvo reminds me of Hallmark-style romances. The love story is as sweet and tender as a perfect caramel macaron.

This book arrived at the perfect moment in my life, offering warmth, smiles, and laughter just when I needed them the most. I thank the algorithm for leading me to this author at a time when I was seeking comfort and joy. Although I’ve never visited Paris, the book transported me there vividly, painting a picture of the city so rich and detailed that I felt as though I were strolling along its charming streets, breathing in the aroma of freshly baked pastries, and experiencing the vibrant culture firsthand. This book also made me crave some good French butter 😂.

I thoroughly enjoyed the baking and cooking theme, which added a delightful layer to the story. The descriptions of Margot’s and Laurent’s creations/experiences were so enticing that they made my mouth water, and I found myself longing to try my hand at making some of the dishes (chicken braised with cider? Yes please!). Additionally, the book provided a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes life of a server, offering insights into the challenges and rewards of working in the hospitality industry.

The story features a happy ending, but not without its characters facing flaws, challenges, and engaging narratives that kept me turning the pages. I highly recommend this book—it’s an ideal read for any time of the year. It’s a book that will leave you felling warm and bring a smile to your face long after you’ve turned the final page.

Christine DeSalvo crafts a charming Parisian romance that satisfies on every level. Margot and Laurent's grumpy-meets-sunshine dynamic delivers genuine chemistry, building from their rocky first meeting to a tender, earned connection. The slow-burn pacing allows both characters room to heal from past wounds while discovering what they truly want.

The standout feature is DeSalvo's authentic portrayal of French cuisine. Every dish, from flaky croissants to delicate macarons, feels researched and lovingly rendered. These aren't just props but reflections of the characters' emotional states and creative passions.

Paris itself becomes a vivid presence through evocative descriptions of neighborhoods, cafés, and cobblestone streets. The supporting cast adds warmth and humor without overshadowing the central relationship. While the romance stays closed-door, the emotional intimacy runs deep.

The dialogue flows naturally, balancing wit with vulnerability. Some readers may find the recipe descriptions occasionally detailed, but food lovers will appreciate the specificity. This is comfort reading at its finest: warm without being cloying, romantic without losing substance.

Perfect for anyone craving a cozy escape to Paris with genuinely likable characters and mouthwatering food.

🥐🥐🥐🥐🥐 (how hungry this book has made me)

"I plucked the plumpest-looking croissant from the tray and took a bite. The golden-brown crust crackled, and the airy inner layers nearly melted in my mouth."

Sacre Blue, this book is such a sweet, delicious treat. From Paris, with Butter is nothing short of a beautifully written love letter to the city of lights and love, a lovely assortment of flavors, textures, aromas, all nicely whisked together in an inviting and evocative narrative.

"We'd fallen asleep in his bed, smelling like the ingredients we'd worked with that day: butter and sugar for me, rosemary and black pepper for him."

From the very first page, the story is as light and buttery as a freshly baked mille-feuille, each chapter layered with intricate detail and subtle complexity. The characters are as charming as petite macarons, each with their own unique filling - sweet, sour, and even savory. From Paris, with Butter is perfect for a gourmet - baguettes, quiches, croissants (with baklava filling - need the recipe for that one), palmiers, and so much more.

"I've missed you horrifically. Everything's so dreary without you. There's no sunshine to counter my grumpiness."

Ok ok ok, "From Paris, with Butter" exceeded expectations!

First, this book is FUNNY. Like, I swear, you will actually laugh while reading this. Pinky swear. I find genuinely funny books too rare, and it's something I really need these days, so even if everything else about the book was garbage, I'd recommend it for this alone.

But what y'all really care about is the romance, right? And this was the grumpy/sunshine pairing of my dreams. Margot with her big dreams and love of making people happy and planning perfect proposals and baking her hearth out + Laurent, the moody, grumpy chef who secretly is adorable. My favorite scene in the book is when Margot makes Laurent dinner, these two are seriously just too cute together.

Ok next, the DESCRIPTIONS in this book! Obviously, it's set in Paris, and I've never been, but I could feel it in the scenes where they're walking around at night, having picnics in the park, visiting the cheese shops. AND THE FOOD! The main characters are a baker and a chef, and the food descriptions are off the charts. Everything they made sounded so good!

This book seriously made me so happy. The end!

I love romances, but I also love books with quality writing, fully-fleshed characters, clever dialogue, and good plotting. This means the majority of romance books being churned out disappoint me (sorry).

This one doesn't! There's no cringy dialogue here or ridiculous plot twists, or love stories that feel like they're written by ten year olds. I was honestly impressed by the quality of this book; I feel like my high school English teacher would be hard pressed to find fault in it! (Just kidding, she could find fault in anything, but still, this book is LEGIT).

From Paris, with Butter follows Margot, a waitress at Le Jules Verne, the very posh restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. Poor Margot has to watch proposal after proposal happen at her job (even though she loves making other people having) while her own love life is in the dumpster. UNTIL! She meets Laurent, a grumpy chef who loves ironing his jeans and his little cat. These two have a grand time hating then loving each other, making delicious food, and keeping each other on their toes.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book, like for real. (Don't read it while you're hungry)

“From Paris, with Butter” by Christine DeSalvo, is a cute, low-spice contemporary romance centering upon a dedicated server at an exclusive Paris restaurant, Le Jules Vern. Margot. Margot loves to bake and takes pride in her work. In the course of her employment there, she has facilitated many marriage proposals, among other celebrations, and her customer service skills are top notch; she can sooth the grumpiest of customers. But one night, a handsome gentleman who dines with his lady friend erodes Margot’s last nerve. He is demanding, obnoxious, and incredibly controlling, and her pique shows just a bit. A moment later, Margot learns of an employee screw-up that explains the customer’s conduct and she is properly humbled and mortified. Soon thereafter, she learns that the fastidious customer, Laurent Roche, is her new neighbor. Laurent is apparently a cook, based on the scents that emanate from his apartment, but he denies this. This is an engaging culinary romance enhanced by skilled writing.

From Paris With Love is the kind of rom-com that makes you want to pack a suitcase, buy a beret, and dramatically sip espresso in a sidewalk café while waiting for fate to deliver a handsome stranger. It’s sweet, funny, and heartwarming...the ultimate comfort read for anyone who’s ever daydreamed about Parisian love stories.

The romance is flirty and infectious, with banter that feels like a dance, equal parts missteps and magic. And while the story leans into familiar rom-com beats, that’s part of its charm. You don’t pick up a Paris romance for suspense; you pick it up because you want to kick your feet, sigh, and feel the sparkle of possibility.

If you love Lucy Score’s cozy small-town heart (just swap small town for Paris cafés), or Tessa Bailey’s knack for sizzling chemistry, this book will make your inner romantic squeal.

Finding Love in Paris . . .

The combination of delicious food you can almost taste and a couple falling in love definitely pulls the reader into the story. (I may have even gained a few pounds without even leaving my seat!) Margot Delcour is a delightful server of delicious foods at a notably romantic restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. Laurent Roche, a grumpy perfectionist and former chef, will be teaming up with Margot for a charity gala and they eventually end up falling in love. The reader gets to balance the alluring foods along with the relationship bubbling under the surface of Margot and Laurent as they begin to trust each other and heal their old wounds. The story line is excellently managed by the author and the reader can easily care for the characters as they go through their struggles and search for a future together. Will they find what they are hoping for in each other? Grab your copy and let the author take you on a journey you won't forget.

From Paris with Butter by Christine DeSalvo was a charming and comforting read. I loved how food sits at the heart of the story, and Laurent and Margot made the perfect cooking companions—easy to root for and a pleasure to follow through their shared moments in the kitchen. The Paris setting added warmth and atmosphere, making everything feel indulgent and cozy, like a well-buttered slice of bread. While some parts felt a little predictable and repetitive, the love of cooking, connection, and simple pleasures made this a satisfying and enjoyable read overall.

I recently visited the Effiel Tower in Paris but did not eat at Le Jules Verne. The thought of an expensive 5 course meal was not in my budget. I did not get to see it lit up at night - I might have enjoyed that experience. I have lived in France for 4 years and am not quite fond of the french culture or the food. I love the crossaints and pain au chocolate. Especially a warm baguette.

Cute Story with Well Developed Characters, But Paris and the Food Steal the Show!

Warning: This book will make you seriously starving for delicious food and pastries (especially if you aren't much of a cook or a baker like me) and you will be ready to book a trip to Paris to share in all of the sights, smells and food of this wonderful city and the surrounding towns. Margot and Laurent were great characters, perfect for each other and fun to read about while hoping that they each achieve their career goals and happiness together. This was the first book I have read by this author, but I will definitely read more - Enjoy!

From Paris, With Butter is a cozy, heartwarming story that blends the charm of a Paris café with the comfort of a slow-burn romance. It’s packed with beloved tropes—grumpy x sunshine, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, and of course, plenty of mouthwatering food.
Margot, a warm and determined baker, meets Laurent, a moody but irresistible chef who’d rather be left alone. Their banter crackles, their chemistry builds slowly and beautifully, and the Paris setting adds a swoon-worthy touch of magic to every scene.
It’s not fast-paced or dramatic—it’s a gentle, tender story about healing, connection, and love blooming when you least expect it. Perfect for anyone who adores slow-burn chemistry and stories that make you smile, sigh, and crave croissants.

This contemporary romance set in Paris is a true delight — especially for food lovers. The way food is described throughout the book is simply mouthwatering, and I found myself constantly craving whatever the characters were eating.

The story itself is a beautiful slow burn, very different from the typical romance arcs, and that made it all the more enjoyable. The Parisian setting and culinary details give the book such charm and atmosphere.

If I could wish for one thing, it would be for the author to include a few of the recipes — since food plays such a central role in the story. But overall, it’s a lovely, cozy, and appetizing romance that’s well worth reading.

This story reads as an ode to french food through the eyes of foodies falling in love!
MArgot is a server, Laurent is a chef, they are both in search of their calling. They are neighbors in the city of love, because Paris and the cuisine are the third main character in this plot. They don't have a meet cute, but it is their connection to food that brings them together as they explore flavors, texrtures, places. She brings the sunshine to his grumpiness, and slowly they start to develop a relationship that is sweet and solid.

This is an entertaining read from start to finish with a beautiful setting, great descriptions, and an innate love for food!.

Christine DeSalvo’s From Paris, with Butter is a warm-toned romantic comedy set against the backdrop of Paris and food; the story revolves around Margot, who works at Le Jules Verne, the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower, and loves baking, and Laurent, who was once a successful chef but has experienced disappointments in both his career and personal life. DeSalvo’s vivid setting descriptions, drawn from her experience in France, her detailed portrayals of French cuisine, and her natural, witty dialogue offer an engaging reading experience. I think readers who enjoy themes of second chances, healing, and self-rediscovery, and who are looking for a light yet satisfying read, will enjoy this book.

This story was sooo cute! I loved seeing Margot and Laurent’s story develop from their grumpy/standoffish meeting to being neighbors, to friends, to lovers all while dealing with anxiety, failure, and busy schedules. The wide variety of side characters were also fantasticcccc! From the recipes/food that I swear I could to taste right off the page to getting to see all of the different locations they experience in Paris this story was such a treat 😉 Margot and Laurent’s story was such a perfect example that every grump gets their sunny counterpart and every chef needs their baker!
