Hero: Niko - strong alpha with good morals and gorgeous too. Reliable and was always there for the heroine Jenna when she needed him.

Heroine: Jenna – had her own demons to face and conquer but for someone with all the training she had to be an operative, she was still the weakest link and is constantly getting herself into strife. And that drove me crazy.

H/h Chemistry: Missing the heat and connection I was looking for - hence no toe curling moments for me.

Secondary Characters: Kai and Rafe which played quite a significant role in this story, both quite interesting in their own right. Rafe is one strong alpha I would love to get to know. I know Kai’s story is the next one in the series. But hope Rafe gets his side told.

Plot and Pacing : Not bad, not as fast paced as I would have liked – but then again I’m fussy with my romantic suspense.

Overall: 3 stars – considering the story didn’t really grab me until about 50% into it. A little predictable in parts, and it was lacking the pace and action that I like. Don't let me deter you other readers, this could be a winner for you. But alas not so much for me.

**** 4 "Revenge for my Family" Stars ****

 photo jenna_zps9nwp7zfr.jpg

Jenna's life is a living hell. Her family and her was attacked, slaughtered and left for dead. They were all collateral damage. No one was to be left alive. The attackers thought they did the job, but they never expected Jenna to survive the bloody hell.

Surviving has left Jenna a changed woman. No longer the sweet, innocent, ray of sunshine, Jenna is out for blood. Her brother's blood, that was supposed to save her and her family. Her brother that was undercover and things went very wrong. Her brother is the last voice and laugh she heard before her life ended and her new hell began.

Her new hell has her after one thing only, becoming a killing beast after one target. She wills top at nothing to end her target.

 photo niko_zpsqvj9yrtb.jpg

Niko lives in his own personal hell from choices he made and choices he had no say in. His family has paid the price and he must avenge the pain they all feel. His plan takes a blow when he is put in charge of making sure Jenna stays safe during a mission that could end several lives and cost them all everything.

Not wanting protection, Jenna fights Niko every step of the way until she can no longer fight the feelings about to erupt from inside. Feelings she has not had since before she was attacked. Feelings Niko never wanted to feel.

Both missions are about to explode and their feelings will not help anyone involved.

"Man, he could get lost in her eyes. They were the color of honey touched by the sun. Beautiful, yet so bleak he wanted to cry. Shower her with kisses until she smiled."

 photo ven_zpshah0udnd.gif

This book is filled to the max with action packed adventure. The only thing lacking in this books was more passion and heat. Believe me, there is room for it. Jenna and Niko are fire together, just wish we could have had more of that attraction.

This is book 1 in the Surgical Strike Unit . I will definitely be reading other books in this series but I am little annoyed that this book was free and sucked you and the next book is $4.99. Dang!!

This was just okay. It was interesting at first. But then I became annoyed with Jenna. She never listened. Because of that Jenna was always in trouble which Meant Nicko was in trouble for trying to help her. Jenna ran her mouth and had a chip on her shoulder but then would rage and cry. I'm sorry but the fact that she was always "trying" to act like a bad ass it was the tipping point for me. I get that you want to fight back and have some power after what happened to you but with Jenna it just came off as forced and never real.

All I can say is thank goodness for Nicko because he was what made the book decent. Nicko was sweet and loyal. But was never afraid to lay into Jenna for being too stupid. He hated to hurt her feelings but he would and I loved that. That being said I'm not sure if I will continue with this series.

I wasn't that impressed with this installment of the series, to the point where I doubt I will continue it. It has been quite a few years since I read the prequel novella, but I went into this story fairly blind, as I didn't refresh myself on that story at all prior to starting this one. My problem with it was that I wasn't really forming a connection with Niko or Jenna. I could certainly sympathize with them, but I ultimately didn't care what happened to them or any of the secondary characters in the story. The story felt somewhat like a start and stop situation, where we'd have an action scene, then everything would just die off and the story became very boring, then we'd have another action scene to liven things up. Just wasn't a good fit for me, and will be deleting from my Kindle library.

This book was a little long winded and sadly I skimmed a lot. The heroine was just ANNOYING and oh so childish that I had a hard time reading it. :(

DNF at 27% for repeated extremely misogynistic “plot devices”
Every female mentioned in the book so far (dead or alive) is a rape survivor. Every. Single. One.
The heroine of the book barely survived a brutal rape and attempted murder before the book starts. Her mother was raped and killed in the same attack. By the time I tapped out, the heroine had been sexually assaulted AGAIN, barely escaping penetrative assault. The hero’s aunt has been repeatedly assaulted by a drug lord and is held by him against her will.
I’m done.

Omg this book took me by surprise..Niko was just so such sweet bad ass hero...many will probably find JENNA to be TSTL But she was deal a shitty hand and really didn’t want to live anymore ....I loved them both. No insta-lust...the connection was nicely done. The action was none stop...almost too much action....but I loved it. I really wanted to kill the bad guy myself...he really deserved worst than he got. If you love RS , give this a try .

I went into this book without any idea of what it was about or the series. I just read the blurb and thought this sounds amazing. I wasn't disappointed, I started this one and was hooked. There was a lot of things going on all at once, but I didn't seem to drown in the story. The book kept me guessing about the motives behind some of the horrors that had occurred. I will admit there were times when Jenna annoyed the crap out of me. However, through all her actions I understood why she did them regardless of how careless I thought they were. When you've lost everything and in such a tragic way you figure why not go all out and figure everything out later. There are times though when you want to choke her and go, stop jumping in with just your emotions. Then there are times when you go I would do the same thing and that is frustrating too but then it makes you root for her even more. You want Jenna to succeed. You want her to get everyone responsible for the pain caused in her past. There are tons of twist and turns.

Just when you think you have everything figured out, something new is thrown in. The most amazing thing about this book is this is not randomly thrown in. Everything is so put together so well that it doesn't bet overwhelming. It just adds more to the puzzle and completes the picture. There are some emotional triggers that may be a too much for some, but just know if you make it past it you will be cheering along side Jenna.

Niko, ah Niko, I fell in love with the name. What can I say I have a thing with names and I know the heritage associated with it. So as if the picture of him in my head wasn't hot enough, he is an amazing person. Although like many he doesn't see himself as that and instead as the reason to cause so much pain in so many people's lives. He is the protector of everyone and everyone always comes first. He has put himself through so much to save other people that when he beats himself down, you just want to hug him...if he allowed you to touch him.

While I went into this series knowing nothing, I can assure you I will go into the rest of series super eager. I know it's going to be full of nothing but the best.

3.75 rounded to 4. Vengeance is the first book in the Surgical Strike Unit, SSU, series by Vanessa Kier. This is also the first book I've read by Ms Kier. She writes an interesting, fast-paced, intense action-packed story with interesting and complex characters. The story revolves around revenge/vengeance toward one slimy character that is felt by several others. Eventually, they all find one another and team up, sort of, to exact vengeance.

Niko has served his time undercover in the underbelly of a Mexican warlord's organization, Alverez's reach is extensive. During that time he became someone he despised and barely knew. His motive was honorable and he had to remember that in order complete his mission, which he did, resulting in the warlord going to prison, supposedly for life. Ten years later, the warlord is released, resuming his position in the underworld, and out for revenge of his own. He has several targets: Niko and the rest of the Andros family, what's left of the Patterson family, and getting his hands on a microchip. They are all interrelated.

Jenna is out to revenge the deaths of her parents and twin siblings. For two long years, she has known that her older brother betrayed the family. She will stop at nothing to avenge them. No one will get in her way. Kai is her's to kill. And she'll gladly die herself in order to obtain his death.

Niko and Jenna have been assigned together on a mission to find Kai, he's the only one that knows where the microchip everyone is looking for is hidden. Jenna is to be the bait that draws him out. There is plenty of action along with twists and turns to keep things going nonstop. I found Jenna to be tedious. You'd think she'd learn after, oh, I don't know, maybe the FIFTH time the exact same sort of thing happens when she becomes impulsive. But does she? Oh, hell no! I found myself rolling my eyes at her the second half of the book. If you can get past her and concentrate on the other characters and the action going on you'll be fine. All in all, I enjoyed the read and will most likely continue the series.

I really enjoyed this next book in the series. It picks up about 10 years after Undercover and is full of action, suspense, and intrigue. In this book we actually have a heroine, Jenna Paterson. Very well written, not overly detailed, kept to current theme with the action that happened in the story. Lots of blood, killing, shooting, double crossing, and torture...you know, regular stuff that happens with military/undercover agents. Lol. Loved it!
There are triggers of abuse & rape some readers might want to skip over those parts.
Jenna is out for revenge against her brother, who she believed ordered the hit on her family. My heart totally cried out for Niko, especially after what had happened in the previous book and what he has to endure in order to save his Aunt again. However it does work out in the end in some ways for the better and in other ways really sad. Jenna & Niko do have their HEA. I did find the ending rushed a bit to wrap up the story. Secondary characters were interesting and I look forward to reading more about them in the series, except for Tonelli, don't care for him at all. Lol.

I wasn't very well and couldn't get off the sofa so needed something light but entertaining and this fit the bill. I enjoyed the story but I did wish that not every character had a personal and emotional reason for chasing the chip, couldn't some of them have purely been doing their job? There was also a lot of sexual violence in the book which I found a bit odd.

The only thing I really didn't like about the book was the main female character Jenna! She confirmed every reason that has been given for why women shouldn't serve in armed combat: too emotional, not strong enough, can be raped are therefore are more vulnerable, men become emotional and try to protect them rather than focussing on the mission. It drove this feminist batty.

I liked this enough to buy the second one to read right away though!

Almost stopped reading several times. While the story premise is good, and intriguing, this story is badly in need of a good editor. It if too long and unnecessarily convoluted.

Additionally, the female main character tee has to be the dumbest woman on the planet. Evidently her agent training, a ridiculous plot device as it NEVER would have happened, was completely worthless as she has absolutely zero agent like skills other than moderate fighting abilities. Her repeated decisions to act without thinking two inches in front of her nose continually put not only her life in danger but the lives of her partner and others. After about the fifth stupid thing she does I was literally yelling at the book. I’ll also add that I find it inconceivable that the male main character would still be in the slightest bit interested in her after her repeated actions that demonstrate complete lack of respect for him or concern for his safety.

So the basic story concept was good but I really couldn’t enjoy the book because of the female protagonist and the length of the book.

Entertaining story with rich characters.

I enjoyed meeting the main characters and became invested in their stories. Thru Niko we see how undercover work in the team of a sadist haunts him. Thru Jenna we learn how a terrible tragedy changes her life. We meet his brother, a respected agent and her brother, a suspect in a fire and believed to be in control of chip that involves terrible experiments. How they all come together makes for a suspenseful story. Niko and Jenna save each other and we want to learn more about their brothers. This is my first book by Vanessa Kier but I am already looking for the next book in the series. She develops layered characters and builds a story that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next.

Rather silly. I enjoyed the hero, he had substance and even tried to tell her (can't remember her name) to get tough or get out of security work. She just whined all the way through, then thought she was the best agent in the world when she was still a trainee. Totally unhinged and shouldn't be anywhere near a weapon or other people for that matter.

I did jump around 8 chapters when I decided enough was enough, it was that or give up entirely and I hate doing that. I found myself in the same position, nothing had changed.

I did read to the end out of respect to the author, coz all authors are brilliant even if I'm not keen on the book. I'm not buying another one though.

Vengeance

What an absolutely brilliant book!
I couldn't put it down!
Jenna, living with life changing trauma, joined the SSU to have revenge against her brother for the attack and murder of their family.
Niko, an esteemed established undercover operative, is on a mission to save his Aunt from a drug baron. The same drug baron who's men carried out the hit on Jenna's family.A
Just when you think everyone's safe, everything goes to pieces and the battle re-commences.
A really fantastic read!

First in a exhilarating series with the SSU unit

Great story of intrigue and mystery spanning international boundaries and wicked autocrat, and family. It brings to the forefront how a terrible life experience can mold and alter oneself until unrecognizable to others or self.
It's a real page turner with a surprising ending, and lays out the basis for the next in the series.

Very frustrating. I liked the plot but the writing was poor with zero continuity in the characters thoughts from one scene to the next. I’m actually surprised I finished it but definitely will not waste my time with the others. Too bad as I would like to know where the chip is ultimately found. Also not a fan of cliffhangers.

Well, I managed 46 pages and gave up. I don’t know what the author tried to write, but it is definitely not a thriller or anything close. A women who had traumatic experience is trained as a soldier for special assignments and brakes down at every little thing she remembers .......she froze was a phrase well used. Couldn’t take it any longer, didn’t see where the story should go.

full of dreadful swearing

I don’t know how other reviewers said such good things about this book, and the 1 or 2 star reviews just said it was boring, as I couldn’t get past the ‘F’ word being used, and being used as frequently as it was. This is what I found to be disappointing. Very disappointing.

Tiresome

I thought I was getting a thriller adventure, not so much. For an action book it shuffled along like grandma. I took a break from the dullness twice to read two other novels. I felt like after all the reading was over the book didn’t really end, just faded into another adventure. Thanks, Vanessa Kier, for the chance to read your creation.

Vengeance: The SSU Book 1 (The Surgical Strike Unit)

The love story of Jenna and Niko. Jenna's family was killed and she believed her brother Kai is the killer and she wants vengeance. Niko is a SSU undercover agent. He want to find Kai and he plan to use Jenna to find him. Who will find him first? Is Kai a cold blood killer? Great story.

I’m not usually fond of stories where there’s guns or missions involved. I don’t hate it but I find it a mood kill, I don’t really know why. But heck, I have the same first name of the author and the cover looks so good to eat, so why not? Plus, I love a good vengeance story, *wink.

This story is about Jenna, who’s the only survivor from the terrible attack of her family two years ago. She joined the SSU (Surgical Survival Unit) so she could get stronger and she could get her revenge to her older brother, Kai whom she believed who ordered the killing of their entire family. While in the program, she met Nico whom she can’t deny her attraction, and it seems like he feels the same way too.

The story of a broken girl who’s working so hard to get stronger just to get back to her older brother is already old news for me. I’ve read and watch movies with the same idea before so I’m curious how the author will make this one different from the rest. I already have some predictions on how this story will go through and some of them really happened. Quite a let-down eh? But I still keep reading this one anyway, actually, I spent the entire evening just to finish this book. So I guess that speaks something right?

Even if this story we’re a bit predictable, I still find some parts that I really enjoy. The attraction between the two main characters we’re a bit sudden for me. I guess you could say it was attraction at first sight and it was so strong that they are having a hard time controlling their libido lol. But even if that was the case, I still find myself being pulled by Nico’s charm. Dang! This guy can be a badass agent and then adorable at the same time.

I guess that is my queue to start talking about the main characters eh? So I’ll start with Nico, *wink. When he was first introduced, he already pulled my attention. He has this dangerous vibe around him but when he’s with Jenna, that changes and he becomes so delectable to me. Dang! This guy sure knows how to get girls, haha. But aside from his exuding hotness, he had a very rough past. When he was 18, he was sent undercover to a vicious Mexican drug lord and it really changed his life, and it was not for the best. He experienced a lot of bad things while undercover that it almost destroyed his life. 10 years later, Alvarez was released from prison and the nightmare came back to haunt him again. I don’t really have any complaints about his character while he’s chasing the bad guy, but when he’s with Jenna, you could say that she brings out the worst in him. He can drop some very nasty words to her that even if she deserves it, I can’t help but feel bad. But oh well, that’s life.

And for Jenna, well, at first I really pitied her character and I understand why she’s very eager to get her revenge. She was left for dead but miraculously, the necklace her younger sister gave to her on her birthday saved her life. It’s been two years since the accident and she thought she conquered the nightmare and she’s emotionally stable. But when she was sent as bait so her brother will come out of hiding, she realized that she’s still unstable. Well, for me, she’s not just emotionally unstable but she’s stupid. I really hated the part where she keeps on putting herself on danger and Nico always come to her rescue. I even applaud the guy for being so patient with her, because honestly, she’s very hard to deal with. The first time she put herself on danger, I understand her motivation, but when she’s doing it again and again, I really want to strangle her myself.

I guess the reason why I survived this story (when main characters do some stupid thing, it really ticks me off) was because there were some characters in this story that I liked. Ofcourse I love Nico, but I adore his younger brother Rafe more and I even liked Kai. Spoiler eh? Haha.  These two we’re on the verge of dying and I thought that’s it, I’m going to hate this story. And fortunately, they survive death, *wink.

I’ve read some military/agents stories before but they focus more on the romance aspect of the story. And it worked out well because I was able to enjoy them. And for this story, I was expecting the same too. But was surprise when most parts of this story we’re about chasing the bad guy but with a little sideline of romance on the way. I’m a hopeless romantic chick so that should piss me off a little bit, but I guess I was carried away with all the suspense, so I was ok with it. It wasn’t that remarkable when I compare it with other stories I’ve read before, but I can’t deny the fact that despite the issues that I encountered, this story was still able to capture my attention.

And besides, this is just the first book of The Surgical Strike Unit series and it wasn’t really that bad. There we’re some loose parts but I bet the next books will be much better. Plus, this one has HEA, *wink.

Although this book has some dark moments, it was really hard to put down. It was intriguing to see how the characters would win with little hope in sight.
