Маньхва «Побачимось у спогадах» авторства талановитого Пен Со розповідає історію непростого шляху молодої дівчини на тлі чарівних міських пейзажів Гонконгу. Ця історія занурює читача в атмосферу ностальгії та спонукає до роздумів про минуле, відтворюючи живі й колоритні картини в чорно-білому стилі.

У центрі сюжету — Лі Міер, молода співачка, яка колись палала мріями про велику сцену. Проте, через низку невдач і непорозуміння з батьком, її впевненість у собі похитнулася, і вона вирушила в подорож, яка стала відображенням її внутрішніх пошуків. Міер втрачає пам’ять, але в її руках залишається альбом зі скетчами вуличних сцен Гонконгу. Прагнучи віднайти втрачені спогади, вона розпочинає мандрівку в пошуках свого минулого й самої себе.

Маньхва порушує важливе питання — як минуле формує наше майбутнє. Спогади можуть стати як нашим обтяженням, так і натхненням. У роботі Пен Со присутня особлива філософія — відтворюючи старі райони Гонконгу з деталями, автор, ніби закликає не боятися минулого й не відмовлятися від спогадів, адже вони допомагають рухатися вперед.

Особливу атмосферу створює чорно-білий стиль малюнку. Пен Со розвивав любов до цього стилю ще з дитинства, коли вперше познайомився з мальованими історіями в монохромному виконанні. Чорно-білі сцени додають особливого контрасту і глибини, підкреслюючи настрій та емоційність кожного кадру. Навіть попри те, що впродовж його навчання він багато стикався із різними фарбами, основою творчості все ж залишився чорно-білий малюнок, який відображає внутрішній світ самого автора.

Завдяки деталізації та виразності стилю маньхва захоплює з першої сторінки. Проста, але глибока емоційність малюнку допомагає буквально «увійти» у світ Міер та її переживань. Кожна сцена, будь то багатоповерхові будинки чи крамниці, вулиці чи квартира героїні, продумана до найменших деталей, що додає відчуття автентичності та зв’язку з реальним світом.

Ця маньхва підійде всім, хто цінує глибокі, зворушливі історії, що залишають післясмак і змушують замислитися. «Побачимось у спогадах» — це не просто історія про віднайдення себе, але й чудовий мистецький твір, здатний здивувати та захопити своїм масштабом. Для мене це було справжнє відкриття, яке ще й завершилося великою галереєю із замальовками вулиць Гонконгу. І гортати й розглядати ці сторінки було не менш цікаво, аніж читати саму історію.

See You in Memories is a pencil drawn graphic novel about a singer/songwriter, Billie, who's thrust into a time reversal loop that has her questioning life and artistry, while also searching for Baron Cheung, a lover, and a fellow time reversal traveler.

This graphic novel is a disjointed and somewhat disorienting story that has philosophical moments that are briefly addressed, but no actual plot.

The saving grace of it all is the intricate, pencil drawn graphics. The artist has an amazing eye for detail and truly broght this story to life. One of my favorite moments was set in a pet store. Billie and Baron are looking at goldfish swimming in these tanks stacked on shelves. It wasn't a particularly important moment to the story, but the image really drew me in.

If anything, I felt like this graphic novel was more sketch book than fleshed out story. It's not a bad thing, but I feel like the lack of direction hindered the overall work.

This is the first ever English version of this graphic novel by Hong Kong artist Pen So.

Beautifully detailed in black and white line drawing, we are pulled into the mystery of Billie Lee's reappearance after three years. She is found on the street unconscious holding a sketchbook she does not recognize. As we follow her through Hong Kong trying to regain her memory, we see the city through the eyes of a native. In all of its beauty and chaos.

Not to reveal too much, but Billie learns that she time traveled in reverse and met Baron, the artist behind the sketchbook and her love.

This is a story of love, loss, and learning to accept oneself in the face of criticism and negativity.

Gorgeous to look at, a bit messy to read. The pencil art is insanely detailed — I kept slowing down just to soak it in. The story is interesting, but the artwork definitely stands out a lot more. In some places it was a little too shaded for me, but I enjoyed the impressions a lot.

Heads-up: the digital file is confusing — right-to-left, pages in reverse order, plus a bonus sketchbook tacked on at the end. Would love clearer chaptering or separate files. Even with the weird layout and some hyperreal panels feeling disorienting, it’s worth checking out for the art alone.

Acaramelada reflexión sobre los recuerdos, la nostalgia y el perseguir los sueños de uno, pero con una sinceridad que desarma y conmueve en vez de recordar al enésimo reel de cualquier neoliberalucho de tres al cuarto, «See You in Memories» es una historia con un trazo artesanal que, además, se ve acompañada por un cuaderno de ilustraciones sacado directamente del relato.

Imprescindibles esas notas finales de la traductora, Nerea García Cabello, para contextualizar la importancia de ciertos referentes.

See You in Memories did not click for me, and it's a shame. The author has a really interesting art style that I enjoyed, but the overall pace, character, character design and the translation itself left a lot to be desired. The concept was not interesting enough to grip me and it the characters lacked soul. The author seems to have several other works out there and I'm interested to check them out, though, even if just to look at the scenery from Pen So's perspective.

“See You In Memories” is so good from an artistic standpoint. Honestly, the story wasn’t bad, but it just didn’t connect with me. But the story was just really the background for the incredible concept and artwork. I soaked in the pages of artwork. So, check this graphic novel out for the incredible artwork.

Лі Міер мріяла стати співачкою. Ба навіть більше, у неї все вдавалося і вона яскраво увірвалася в музичний світ. Та шось пішло не так, її популярність почала зменшуватися, а нові пісні отримували тільки негативні відгуки. І навіть найближча людина, батько, хоч і любить Лі Міер, та не вірить у її мрію. Одного разу дівчина із розбитим серцем йде з дому і повертається аж за три дні, зовсім нічого не пам’ятає, що ж сталося за цей час. Тільки альбом з малюнками, який вона принесла із собою, може пролити світло на те, де вона була.

Це така меланхолійна історія про пошук себе. Тут про те, що не можна здаватися та треба вірити в свої мрії, про творчі пошуки та важливість підтримки. Про те, що красу можна знайти в простих речах, а пейзажі ховають історії за красивим фасадом. Автор спочатку працював над ідеєю відтворити «старий добрий Гонконг» і думав, що вийде атмосферний путівник, та зрештою визнав цю ідею нудною і додав до неї історію, яка є таким собі його власним поглядом на творчість. Тут багато деталізованих малюнків, виконаних у стилі чорно-білих рисунків олівцем, мені дуже сподобалося їх розглядати. Іноді дійсно здавалося, ніби десь в часи локдаунів гуляю пустим містом та намагаюсь вгадати, що раніше відбувалося у цих будівлях. Разом з Міер я намагалася згадати, де вона була ці три роки і дивувалася поворотам сюжету, та вірила в те, що здаватися ніколи не можна, а всі найважливіші зустрічі чекають нас в майбутньому.
