DELIVERANCE IN THE TOWN OF PINECONE
The story begins in 1876 in Pinecone, Montana Territory. The town is getting a new minister, Reverend Christian Granger. When he arrives in town, he has taken deathly ill, and Mrs. Hollis, who will be his housekeeper, runs out to find Hope to help.
Hope Hart Carmichael is the closest the town has to a doctor. While Hope went back East to finishing school in Boston and schooling in New York, she returned to her family. While she had men interested in her while in the East, she never accepted a courtship. Doc Moore wanted her to go for nurses training, but she refused to leave her family again. So Hope uses the training she received under the guidance of Doc Moore and the midwife, Old Harriet, and has attended births since her teen years. But the one thing Hope doesn’t have is respect—from the busybody gossiping women of Pinecone. Not because of anything she has done, but what they perceive as tainted by her mother.
“When I found myself a widow while pregnant with you, I thought the Hart family would take me in. I did carry their blood after all. Life never turns out how you ever imagine it would. There are things I want for you that were not opportunities for me…do you understand?” –Angel Hart Carmichael
“Harvey Hart is dying, and there is talk that since you are his only living grandchild…I told Nate to tell Archie he better expect someone to call on you.”
The story will have Hope’s uncles, brothers to her late father, Uncle Winston, the sheriff, and Uncle Edmond, restaurant and hotel owner, visiting the Carmichael ranch. The Harts turned out Angel when their brother died, but their own father has an ace up his sleeve, because the stipulations of the will all depend on Hope and what she decides to do.
Archie: The stipulation is that Hope be married to a man of sound mind and moral character. If he does not have wealth of his own, then it states here he must be vetted to prove why that would not matter.
Hope: Does it state a time limit to when I must be married by? I would assume I do not inherit, which would not bother me, should I not be married by the deadline?
What will happen to Hope—and the her Uncles, who have ignored her the entirety of her life, should she not agree to the stipulations laid out by her paternal grandfather? Then there is the chemistry between Christian and Hope; both have felt it, but both have tried to ignore it. When Christian learns of how hateful the gossipers in Pinecone have been to Hope, he has sermons to preach on it, yet it doesn’t seem to stop. They take things so far, being so cruel, and bringing in outsiders, that even the store owner forbids them to return.
I loved the story and how Christian and Hope became friends, but they must be careful. It seems that too many people feel it is their duty or prerogative to interfere and make assumptions. I liked how Christian has had his own trials in life, and he is upset over how Hope is treated. Is marriage something he would consider again? This time of his choosing and not others. What starts as a marriage of convenience concept becomes one of love.

Hope is a compassionate woman who is forced to marry to inherit her grandfather’s estate and prevent her uncles from falling into poverty. She is not ready to get married yet, but that changed when she met the new Reverend in town.
Christian is the new Reverend in town. He was married, but it didn’t go well. He is a widower now. He doesn’t gossip, and this town has a small group that everybody detests for their big mouths and their lies.
This is a nice book about two good people who thought they were not prepared for marriage, but God knew better than them.

The characters were very appealing and likeable and complicated and absolutely perfect together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was excellent and solidly drawn. Enjoyed immensely and highly recommend.
