Pillow Talk

Rate this book
Shona Shah's life is chaotic. She is shackled to a family obligation, has a casual relationship with childhood friend Senthil Aiyer, unfulfilled dreams and a heap of clothes at the bottom of her cupboard that she doesn't have time to hang up.

In a bold move, Shona walks out of her family's tailoring business to forge her own path. But the beautiful bridal designer soon realises that, to move forward, she has to look at her family's past. Shona's journey of self-discovery is a whirlwind of humour and heartache as she learns to accept that her 'no pillow talk' rule with Senthil can be broken. Sen discovers that sometimes the greatest love stories can unfold right in the middle of the 'chaos' he has always tried to avoid.

This is a modern story about love and friendship and embracing the unpredictable journey of life.

Pillow Talk is the first of a series set in the fictional town of Rally in KwaZulu-Natal from the new queen of South African romance.

This was such an amazing story about love, family, and learning to accept the happiness you deserve whenever it enters your life💖

Shona has lived most of her life according to the familial obligations tied to her family's tailoring business. As the novel progresses, we see this incredibly relatable FMC grapple with self-doubt about her professional abilities, self-sabotage her own happiness in her relationship with Sen, and struggle to figure out who she is when she is away from her family.

I loved Shona's growth both individually and in her relationship with Sen. Senthil was just as flawed and easy to root for as Shona was. I loved how he always tried to be gentle with Shona while also respecting his own wants and needs in their relationship. Their banter and years of friendship shone through in the amount of care that they had for each other, and I loved reading about the progression of their love story💖

Although their lack of communication frustrated me to no end (quite a few times), I did appreciate the encouragement and support that they provided each other. Their friends and families were just as integral to getting Shona and Sen to stop fighting the happiness they both deserved and embrace what they have with each other.

Nivashni's writing style highlights the real connections between her characters so well, and led to a story about love and family that felt both universal and reliably South African. I loved reading about these characters, and I can't wait to read more about both the small town of Rally and these loveable characters in her next book💖

‘I don’t mind being without a map on any journey with you.’

‘I always have time for you,’

I was so excited to be included in this @jonathanballpublishers readalong featuring Pillow Talk by @nivashnin. How absolutely gorgeous is this cover?

This story takes you to the small town of Rally where everyone knows everyone. Shona who works in her family business – Shah & Sons tailors where nothing has changed since her grandfather opened it in 1964. She longs to modernise it and while she has begun to fulfil her dream of creating beautiful works of art in veils, she feels unable to leave the store out of familial obligation. Elder daughter syndrome anyone? Shona is involved with Sen but they are determined to keep this a secret from their friends and family. But can you really hide a relationship in a small town?

I loved the development of the characters and how we are drawn into their lives, experiencing their frustrations and joys. I don’t think that there could be an elder daughter reading this who wouldn’t see parts of herself in Shona, her responsibilities and her complicated emotions. Her need to be close to her family while establishing her own life, her hurt for not being appreciated for what she does. Her family dynamics whilst, I was lucky enough not to have experienced personally, resonated because I knew of others who had gone through the same. This connection added so greatly to this reading experience, I could not stop talking about it. And then Senthil…sigh.. where do I even start? Sen supports Shona and helps to guide her to realising what had not even occurred to her. Their moments while highly frustrating when they were not communicating, were the perfect balance of sweet and emotional, caring and funny. His family is adorable, that wedding scene is so vivid, I could literally see it.

This book is remiscent of a Bollywood romance but with the perfect local South African setting that has you smiling, leaving you feeling seen and hoping for a Sen of your own. Pick it up – you will not regret it

Pillow Talk was such a refreshing and meaningful read for me—especially as a story by a local South African author that feels so close to home.

What stood out the most was how deeply relatable the story is. The family dynamics, cultural expectations, and everyday nuances felt incredibly authentic. It’s the kind of book where you don’t just read the story—you recognise parts of your own life in it. That familiarity made the emotional moments land even more powerfully.

One of the things I appreciated most was the care the author took in developing not just the main character, but the side characters as well. Every character felt intentional and layered, and their individual stories added depth to the overall narrative. More importantly, you could really see how these characters shaped and influenced the main character’s journey, which made the story feel richer and more grounded.

It’s clear that Nivashni Nair took the time to flesh out the world and relationships in a way that feels honest and lived-in, rather than rushed or surface-level.

Overall, Pillow Talk is a beautifully written, culturally resonant story that highlights the complexity of family, identity, and relationships. It’s the kind of book that stays with you because it feels so real.

Thank you @jonathanballpublishers and @jonathanballlocal for my #gifted readalong copy.

This was an utterly delightful and fast-paced read that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. The story follows Shona and Sen, childhood best friends who decide to enter a friends-with-benefits arrangement. As their connection deepens, long-buried emotions resurface, leading to a whirlwind of miscommunication and heartfelt chaos.

Amidst this, Shona navigates the challenges of reconciling with her estranged family while pursuing her dream of launching her own business. The novel masterfully balances humour, romance, and more serious themes, offering both warmth and depth.

Shona is beautifully portrayed as a strong, independent woman, a refreshing and rare depiction within Indian representation. As a South African of Indian descent, I found many of the experiences and cultural nuances deeply relatable. Reading this book felt like wrapping my hands around a comforting cup of chai, familiar, soothing, and full of heart.

Nivashni has now become one of my favorite authors. Shona and Sen are friends since childhood and they don't realize that the connection between them cannot be denied. They try and have a clandestine fling but things get complicated. They didn't consider that there will be emotions and feelings and a shared history between them. Then there's the burden of family obligations and unfulfilled dreams of parents and children. The author shows that a person is never too old to fullfill a long forgotten dream and that following your heart could be a risk worth taking for your one true love. Loved the book!

Reading this book was like slipping into a familiar and much loved world I didn't know I needed. From the hilarious town statue to the adventures of the MMC's as kids and their kind-hearted friends, I was swept away by the town of Rally.
The romance between the main characters was sweet, insanely chaotic, and had just the right amount of tension and heat. The multi-layered plot kept me turning the pages and rooting for the characters until I cheered and teared along with them.
If you enjoy a sweet contemporary romance with a hint of spice, I highly recommend Pillow Talk.

This book was so comforting and real. At some stage in our lives, we all fall into similar predicaments, and seeing it unfold through someone else’s story felt incredibly validating. I especially loved the way Durban was portrayed—it felt familiar and authentic, from the places to the little details, which made the whole story even more enjoyable. Everything flowed naturally and felt well thought out, making it an easy and meaningful read.

It was good to take a leap on a South African author. This was a quick read with a light romantic story. Overall, I enjoyed the plot but it could use more depth to immerse the reader.
