One fake boyfriend. One bed. And one rule we’re definitely about to break.
Brooks Kingston. My older brother’s best friend. My childhood nemesis. The cocky hockey god who once made my life a living hell... and now kisses me like I’m the only goal he’s ever wanted to score.
The infuriating man is back in Beaver County, nursing a shoulder injury and grumping up the local frozen lake. And thanks to one tiny, inconvenient lie that lands me my dream sportscaster promotion and makes his adorable ailing grandma happy, I’m suddenly playing the role of doting girlfriend to the enemy.
Fake dating I can handle. Moving in with him? A stretch.
Sharing a bed with the man who once chopped off my ponytail—and now kisses like sin? That’s where the plan starts to melt faster than the ice beneath his skates.
Between the steamy "just for the cameras" touches and his unexpectedly sweet late-night confessions, I start to wonder if maybe the sparks flying between us aren’t so fake after all.
But when his injury heals, he’ll go back to pro hockey. I’ll go back to chasing my dream. And neither of us is ready to admit that maybe…this is the dream.
Because somewhere in the fire, the fights, and the way he looks at me like I’m his forever—this enemies-with-benefits thing is starting to feel a whole lot like love.

Award-winning author of romantic comedies, Terra Weiss brings heart, humor, and happy endings to each of her books. She grew up in a small town in Idaho, but now lives in Atlanta with her mad scientist husband, wacky and wonderful mother, spunky daughter, and the feral ten-pound dogs who run her house. She enjoys jogging at a snail's pace, reading, and piling bright orange mountains of squeezy cheese on her crackers.
• Brother's best friend • Fake dating • Hockey x Sports reporter • Childhood Frenemies
Look, Hockey Romance is my kryptonite. I will eat that trope uppp and this one I devoured. I will say it's on the lighter side of spice, which is okay. The chemistry between Sydney and Brooks felt natural. The side characters were fun, especially Meema. The book was charming, sweet and tender. Not gonna lie, I was very nervous about the brother being overprotective of the sister. That could be a hit or miss. But once it came to light why, he's behavior was understanding. Overall the book was good, I enjoyed it. I'm excited for what's to come!
I want to thank BookSirens and Terra Weiss for the eARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This was such a goooood read and I’m so thankful to have been able to read it early!! I’m not afraid to admit that I totally devoured this in one sitting… aka I stayed up later than I should’ve and I have no regrets!! I truly loved everything about Sydney and Brooks and even Maisie because lets be real, we all love a good meddling grandma even if it’s taken a little too far🫣 The banter, the flashbacks, helping each other overcome obstacles, and the spice was 10/10, did not disappoint at all🤣
Sydney is such a strong character that doesn’t let people get to her and she’s making her own path in a male dominated field, which I’m such a freaking sucker for. The journey with her panic attacks was so real and I loved seeing her and Brooks both be able to help each other through them with such understanding.
Brooks maybe have been a grump but he’s got such a caring side that he just needed the right girl to bring it out… aka Sydney was the perfect person to do so. While nursing an injury, he’s also going through a bunch of different internal battles and seeing him get past those little by little was awesome.
Brothers best friend?? Childhood frenemies? Fake dating?? Sports romance? Meddling grandma? Is that a trope i think it should be! This book was cute and addictive! When I finally sat down to read it I loved it!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I loved everything about this book. the banter, the connection! loved how they both finally admitted that they had feelings for each other! Loved how it was set in my home state, Idaho.
Fake Off was my introduction to hockey romance, and wow! It did not disappoint! This story has all my favorite tropes: fake dating, enemies to lovers, small-town charm, and larger-than-life characters (looking at you,Meema!). And of course, I can’t forget to mention the spice. This book was such a fun, addictive read, and I had the best time with it! Thank you so much Terra for the opportunity to read this book early and the beautiful book box!
Sydney is a weather reporter, but hopes are to be the sports anchor at the station. Growing up, sports was her life. Her brother is a successful hockey player and has help with her sports interest. Now, with the opportunity, even closer, she can't help being optimistic. Although she knows her competition has more going for him. With all his followers and his contacts, she knows the odds are stacking up against her. Brooks can't believe he's back in Beaver County staying with Meema. His whole career is up in the air. Not just his injury, he feels torn with how he feels about the future. Knowing Syd has been helping his gran instead of him. He knows he needs to be more present. But his feelings for his best friends sister can't go anywhere. She deserves more than him. But now they're in a fake relationship to help not only his gran but her career. This is a story you don't want to miss reading. Both characters have their own insecurities. But Brooks has a secret that could change everything, and not in a good way. Between the racy beavers, an overweight dog that gets into everything, and the gossip book club. Can Syd and Brooks ever be honest with each other. Or will everything just fall apart. Sit back and enjoy another brilliant book from Terra
Fornicating beavers, meddlesome grandmas, and fertility statues oh my!!!! This books was such a breath of fresh air! It had the perfect mix of comedy, angst, and romance.
Brooks may be her brother’s best friend but he’s been the bane of her existence since they were kids. The unlikely duo fake a relationship to give his grandma Maisie something to fight for while ill and help Sydney get the sports anchor position she’s spent the years working towards.
For the first time in years Sydney and Brooks are spending time together… and a bed. They learn the truth about a lot of misconceptions they had for one another and try to fight the undeniable chemistry they share.
This book had so many of my favorite tropes… fake dating, one bed, and hockey romance!!! Omg I couldn’t get enough. I absolutely loved Brooks grandma Maisie! She has no filter bur loves Brooks and Sydney and wants them to experience the love and happiness she shared with her husband… and the beavers!
Sydney and Brooks’ banter? Absolute perfection. That “we argue constantly but also definitely wanna bang” energy was 🤌chef’s kiss🤌. Exactly what I want in a fake dating romance. The tension, the denial, the slow slide into feelings everyone else saw coming? Delicious. The spice was perfectly balanced too, hot enough to make me blush, but never overshadowing the emotional pull. And yes, I might’ve shed a tear near the end (you’ll see why when you read 👀).
RATINGS: Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶🌶 Readability: 📚📚📚📚📚 Would I recommend? Absolutely! 12/10 go read it today!
I don’t think I’ve read any I’ve hockey romance books before. Sydney and Brooksie had a great dynamic, good back and forth in the relationship. Brother’s best friend trope and an interfering guilt tripping meemaw.
It was cute nice easy read. The story had good flow and a quick pace.

this was such a good read. I loved the snarky comeback and the chemistry between Brooks and Sydney. I love how supportive his memaw is as well, even if she's a little extra haha.
Fake Romance With A Double Twist Sydney and Brooks have known each other since early childhood, but those years have been rife with pranks and hostility. When Sydney wants to grow from weather reporter to the sports section a colleague/friend suggest a fake relationship between her and him, a star hockey player for the team in Boise. Their antagonism hides an attraction that has been there a long time and their forced proximity makes them realize their changing feelings. Both have suffered a severe trauma that can cause a panic attack with a sudden trigger. Recognizing what’s happening, they can help each other, which throws them even more together. A story with ups and downs for all the characters involved, finally finding the strength to be honest with oneself and others. Recommended romantic and steamy read. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Reading Fake Off was a relaxing way to spend my weekend. The book started off a bit slow, but turned into a delightful read. The plot was unexpected and I lost track of time while trying to guess what would happen next. Fake Off made me smile, wonder and laugh. I also learned a little more about hockey - bonus points. I definitely recommend reading it.

This was not only my first Terra Weiss book, but also my first hockey romance in general, and now I can confidently proclaim I am a fan of both!
This story begins with our fmc Sydney Holt, weather broadcaster for the local network, and aspiring sports broadcaster. She is good at her job, good at being unflappable and pivoting quickly on air in the face of the unexpected, be it an equipment malfunction or passionate beavers, unaware and unconcerned that the chosen rendezvous spot is smack dab in front of the camera in the middle of one of the most important broadcasts of Sydney’s life, the one that determines whether or not she acquires the coveted sport’s announcer position.
Enter Brook’s Kingston, hockey player extraordinaire, NHL pro recovering from a sport’s injury, her childhood arch nemesis/ brother’s best friend.
Everything about Brooks sets Sydney on edge, from his playboy reputation to the way he gets a kick out of retelling the stories of childhood pranks (traumas) he brought into her life. (Hello unwanted horrible grade school haircut).
But after this chance on air meet up, a mutually beneficial plan is hatched. Brooks and Sydney will “pretend” to date. This offers Sydney a leg up for her promotion over the competition, through her connection to a current sports pro. Brooks on the other hand, is taking care of his sick grandmother, Maisie, and it is the deepest desire of her heart to see Brooks happy and settled in romance, before it is too late for her to see it.
What could go wrong right? As the plan backfires in both some truly embarrassing episodes of secondhand embarrassment for the reader, and scenes of total devastation and ruinous declarations that leave the reader with their heart in shambles, Brooks and Sydney start to question what is real and what isn’t, battling between what their hearts long for, and the logistics of their reality.
Humorous and heartwarming, with a mysterious secret that threatens to tear their fake(or maybe not so fake) relationship apart, this story has it all. A meddlesome grandmother who adds humor and sentimentality to every scene, just the right amount of spice to warm up by the fireplace on the cold winter nights, and a harrowing tale of a couple who must embrace vulnerability if they have even the slightest hope of building a real foundation.
I highly recommend this book, and if you aren’t a small town romance lover or a hockey fan, this book may just change your mind on both counts!
So grab some of Maisie’s spiked hot cocoa, and grab a seat with a good view of the ice. You won’t want to miss a single page of this epic Fake Off, and will be enthralled from puck drop to final buzzer!
4.5 ⭐ A sports romance with brother's best friend, enemies to lovers, fake dating, one bed, and forced proximity----sign me up! Seriously, all of these tropes are in this book and done so well and naturally within the storyline.
I loved the banter between Sydney and Brooks and watching them support each other's careers and help Brooks' grandmother. Terra Weiss delved into really difficult topics of mental health related to trauma and controlling parents as well as the search we all go through of finding out who we want to be and what our goals and place in life is. The chemistry was undeniable, and I loved how everyone in the town was rooting for them, and so many people have seen for years what they could be. Blurred lines between fake and real push both characters to figure out who they are and what they want and face uncomfortable truths.
Quick Synopsis: Sydney clashes with Brooks who has just returned home to their small Idaho town to recover from a shoulder injury. Brooks sees something different in Sydney when she interacts with his grandma, who she'd befriended this last year. Sydney helped his grandma to cancer treatments and generally keeps her company. Sydney is being considered for a promotion to a sports caster instead of covering the weather, but inside connections seem to be favoring another candidate. In a moment of desperation, Sydney suggests she and Brooks fake date as a way to help her with the promotion and get Brooks to get the hockey world off his back because she'd report on his recovery. Brooks says no until Grandma Maisie appears to be in decline, and he believes happy news will help her recovery. She insists they live together in Brooks' room at her house. How can they say no?
The banter on camera, caretaking of each other and Maisie, and the chemistry they always had underneath their childhood and teenage years of plaguing each other blurs the line of fake dating into real.
💙Synopsis: Sydney Holt has a problem and recovering Pro-hockey player, Brooks Kingston has a solution. Sydney has worked her whole career to transition from weather reporter to sportscaster for her town. However, when it looks like she might lose out to an influencer with connections, joining into a mutually beneficial relationship with Brooks might be her best chance. Brooks is home recovering from a shoulder injury and sees how much being in a relationship would help lift his sick grandmother’s spirits, enter Sydney. But their relationship is just fake, right?
💙Thoughts: This book was so much fun! It has so many tropes I love, forced proximity, one bed, fake dating! I loved the introduction of characters and the family dynamics of both Brooks’ and Sydney’s family. I love that they both have known each other their whole lives, and yet they are spending time really learning and growing together. Both characters have some past trauma to work through, and it was so sweet and heartwarming to see them work through it together with the support of their families. Maisie, Brooks’ grandmother (or Meema) was hilarious and a wonderful side character! I can’t wait for the Christmas novella! 🫶🏻✨
💙Thank you so much @terraweissauthor for providing me an e-ARC copy of Fake Off in exchange for my review!! 🫶🏻✨
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book early! I really enjoyed this book and hope there are more to come from Beaver County!!!!
This book was unlike any I have read before. I love a good fake dating trope but I’ve never read one like this!
Brooks Kingston. The King. Star player for the Boise trout. Maisie’s grandson. And best friend to my older brother, Jonah.
While rehabbing a shoulder injury back home at his Meemaw’s house, Brooks runs into his best friend’s younger sister Sydney. They grew up together and have lots of memories together - none pleasant. When they find they each need something from the other, they decide to fake date. Which of course, turns out all wrong. In all the right ways!
The fake dating is great in every way: for Sydney’s career taking off and Meemaw’s health getting better everyday, and even having someone helping Brooks with Meemaw and his own recovery…except the fact that Jonah, Sydney’s older brother and Brooks’ best friend since childhood, made both of them promise him a long time ago not to date. And I will say that Jonah is one scary mutha.
In this book I really put myself where the characters were and feel like I was in Idaho on the iced over lake, and in LA with Sydney and at Meemaw’s kitchen table warm and cozy with Gus at my feet. It was truly a feel good story and I cant even count how many time I actually laughed out loud!
This may have been the first book by Terra Weiss that I read but it will definitely not be the last! (That means I really loved it! 🥰)
Let me preface this by saying that typically I’m not a big sports romance reader, not for any reason other than I’m not big into sports. However, this book was great because it focused more on the plot and characters than on the sport (hockey). So, despite my lack of sporting knowledge, I was still able to follow along and really enjoy the ride.
Things I liked about this book: While the trope ‘brothers best friend’ is a familiar one, I feel like Terra did it justice and I love how there was a bit of mystery as I kept trying to figure out what Brooks was hiding (I had imagined this entirely different scenario so I was pleasantly surprised to find I was wrong 🤗) —that’s all I can say about that without spoilers! I LOVED the meddling grandma and anytime there’s a fake dating scenario, I’m all over it (I don’t know why, but they’re just so fun to read especially if it uncovers hidden feelings!). I also enjoyed how instead of focusing just on Brooks career, Sydney’s career was a central part of the story. I love a strong FMC that knows what she wants. And….those beavers…🤭 IYKYK! 💕
Overall, this is a book that I would definitely recommend, especially as we’re getting ready to head into winter ❄️ it’s the perfect cozy read with a cup of meemaws spicy hot chocolate next to you! ☕️
Fake Off by Terra Weiss was such a delightful read! I especially loved the banter and angst the chemistry between the main characters was electric from page one. The brother’s best friend trope was executed perfectly, and I really appreciated the realistic reaction from the FMC’s brother when he discovered what was going on it added so much authenticity to the story.
There were so many sweet and beautifully written moments that painted such vivid imagery of the love growing between the main characters. The comedy elements were on point, too so well timed and natural that they balanced the emotional tension beautifully. The blend of spice, plot, and humor made this story flow effortlessly, never once dragging.
Maisie, the MMC’s grandmother, absolutely stole the spotlight at times her warmth, wit, and wisdom added so much heart to the book.
If I had one critique, it’s that I would’ve loved a deeper dive into the mental health representation. It felt so relatable and could’ve been explored even more. And honestly, I just wanted a few more swoony pages between the leads they were that good together. Overall, Fake Off is a heartfelt, funny, and romantic read that perfectly balances humor with emotion. Terra Weiss delivers another gem full of charm, chemistry, and heart.
Thank you so much Terra for the opportunity to ARC read this story! I can't wait to read the rest of this series!
Sydney, the iconic, badass heroine at the heart of this story, is everything I want in a leading lady. She’s strong, determined, vulnerable in the most authentic ways, and absolutely unstoppable in the male-dominated world of sports journalism. Every aspiring girlboss can relate to her experience working twice as hard to get half as far in a male-dominated field. Watching her go from underestimated weather girl to a respected sportscaster had me cheering from my couch. Not to mention, I truly felt her journey of managing panic attacks was written with such care and realism that it added significant depth to her character (which is so hard to get right).
And then there’s Brooks. Our KING. Swoon. This hockey legend may have the gruff, alpha exterior (and a shoulder injury that threatens to end his career), but he’s also got a softer side that sneaks up on you and steals your heart. The chemistry between him and Sydney is electric, even when it’s just “fake,” but the emotional stakes are what really sealed the deal for me.
And let’s talk about Maisie. Brooks's hilarious grandmother who’s battling cancer and scheming like a pro to push these two together? Absolute scene-stealer. Her relationship with Sydney and Brooks was as touching as the romance, and honestly, the beating heart of the story. We’re in her corner the whole book because I just wanted them to finally get together.
Brooks and Sydney were perfection. The years of hate turned into them actually knowing each other fairly well. And then the fake dating troupe we all know that doesn’t end seamless like everyone thinks especially when feelings start getting involved. Brooks tried to push her away but Sydney was not having any of it.
I loved watching their relationship bloom into the love they have always had for one another. The best moment was when Brooks finally stood up to his dad and told him how he felt. Also, the vulnerability he showed to Sydney was top shelf, like they saw each other in ways others couldn’t.
What I also enjoyed was how Brooks and Sydney bonded over their panic attacks. They see each other when they try to put on a brave face. They grew together also, but meema did was dirty. But everyone was so on board with their relationship. I loved that for them too.
What I didn’t like what I thought I was missing part of the story with her previous relationship, like there should have been more of a back story.
The bomb that was dropped with brooks was not what I was expecting but Sydney was never going to let him walk away again.
Loved this hockey romance set in Idaho. The banter, the fake dating plot, and the spice are all top-notch between these two childhood nemesis. Sydney is trying to make it in the world of sports broadcasting, but she cannot advance at her job. Brooks is a professional hockey star, recovering at home from a serious injury, and staying with his ailing Grandmother. These two self-proclaimed enemies keep bumping into each other until Sydney realizes that dating a famous local sports star might help her get the sports broadcasting promotion at work.
This book has a lot of angst, heart, humor, and spice. It’s an easy, quick read, and I recommend it to any hockey romance fans as well as anyone looking for a fun read with flawed characters.
In this book: *Fake Dating *Brother’s Best Friend *Only One Bed *Small Town *Childhood Nemesis *Fun side characters
Thank you, Terra Weiss, for an advanced copy of this book!
I love a book full of strong characters and that's exactly what I got here.
Sydney is a strong independent woman who is building her career in a male dominated arena. She's his best friend's little sister and definitely off-limits so how did he end up just agreeing to fake date her?
Brooks is a man who has already built his career in his own male dominated arena. Sydney considers him arrogant, irritating and just plain annoying, so what was she thinking when suggested they fake-date?
They both need each other for all the wrong reasons, but what if they also need each other for all the right reasons?
Am I glad I read it - yes Was it a waste of my time - absolutely not Would I sit down and read it all over again - yes Would I read more by this author based on this book - please tell me there is another one coming.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is my first book from this author and I loved every bit of it. Sports romance novels are my absolute favorites, especially if that sport happens to be hockey. Then after reading the rest of the blurb I just knew I had to read this book. Brooks and Sydney’s story features quite a few tropes that I love to read. But it was definitely the fake dating that I enjoyed the most. With quite a few references to their past together I was fairly confident that when they crossed over to something more it would all feel like it was always meant to be. There are a few bumps in the road for them and a potentially devastating secret to be revealed. But by the end of this story everything went how I was hoping it would, and after enjoying this book as much as I did I will definitely be reading more from this author in the future.
I am just getting into my hockey romance era. I loved the characters. Meema is so sweet, cute and feisty, reminds me of my sweet grandma. What would you do to make your dream career and make your family happy? I thought the story was fast-paced, fun, easy to read, small-town full of drama. The story was great, fake dating turned into real feelings. I love how when life gets hard everyone runs from real life problems. I do enjoy how everything happens for a reason and that the story ended happily. The story was well plotted with important life situations happening. The characters banter was cute but also, they were scared of their true feeling. Overall, I loved this book, and I would recommend and I cannot wait until the second story comes out.
I received this book as an arc in exchange for an honest review.
“It means I’ve told her all your good qualities. It only took about thirty seconds, but I think she was impressed.”
I loved Meema!!!!
Surprisingly emotional, this story pulled me in and didn’t want to let me go. Plenty of tropes to satisfy plenty of readers. Hockey grump Sunshine reporter Brother’s best friend Fake relationship Ride-or-die bestie
His reason for being a man-ho grumpy player (in more ways than one), is heartbreaking, kind of explained his actions, but was mostly an excuse to be a bit of an a….
Syd was strong, yet not, but she was pretty relatable. I wish she had managed to do something to get a little payback on Donny, though…
The cast of characters was good, the storyline was good, it sucked me in…. a really good read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Fake Off was such a fun, heartwarming read. Sydney and Brooks’ fake dating scheme starts out as a way to keep his Meema happy and boost her chances at landing a sports broadcaster job, but of course it turns into so much more. I loved the brother’s best friend tension mixed with their long history of teasing, which made their banter sparkle from the very beginning.
I really enjoyed how many of my favorite tropes showed up here, and I was pleasantly surprised by the depth each character had beneath the banter and romance. It made the story feel layered, heartfelt, and just a joy to read.
Thank you for the ARC of Fake Off, all opinions are my own!
This hockey romance was everything I love wrapped into one cozy, can’t put it down read. Enemies to lovers tension? Check. Forced proximity that had me grinning the whole time? Double check. And the brother’s best friend angle added the perfect forbidden spark. There’s just enough mystery and family drama to keep the pages turning. I loved Brooks and Sydney, but the true MVP might be Meema. You’ll have to read to know exactly why.. This book was like a big warm hug I didn’t realize how badly I needed &everything I wanted in a happily ever after! Add this to your tbr and thank me later 🤭
Take off” is charming, tender, and utterly addictive, one of those reads you end up finishing in a single sitting.
Delivers exactly the kind of story that makes your heart melt. The relationship between Sydney and Brooks feels effortless and real, blending sweetness, humor, and vulnerability in the best way.
Sydney is a strong, inspiring heroine carving her own path in a male-dominated field, and it’s impossible not to root for her. While Brooks is the classic grumpy hero with a soft heart, just needed the right person to bring out his warmth
