Book one in the Unchained series. Jessica Sterns has always been a good girl, doing right, dating right, following all the right rules. Now, at twenty-nine, thanks to a life change, she's got a whole lot of catching up to do, and a whole lot of bad girl to let loose. It's just a question of finding the right man. At first glance, Mac Hollister appeared to be just that man. The tall rugged rancher practically oozed testosterone, while his indolent posture, easy confidence and raw masculinity just screamed "bad boy". The kind of man women spin dark fantasies around. The kind of man she's looking for. The minute the honey-blonde sets her dainty foot on the sidewalk in Round The Bend, Mac knows he's in trouble. From the top of her head with its long French braid, to the tips of her toes with their delicate pink polish, this woman defines elegance. Not the kind of woman he prefers, but no amount of logic can dissuade his interest once he sees Jessie's smile. He's always been a sucker for a sense of humor. Especially when it comes packaged with a killer body and an equally killer wit. Mac expects their affair to be short, sweet and safe, but he soon discovers that beneath that delicate image lurks a woman who can handle all the "bad boy" he can throw at her. She's everything he never expected to find, and what started out short-term soon becomes a relationship that will demand a compromise he's not sure he can make in order to keep the one woman he can't imagine living without.

Sarah has traveled extensively throughout her life, living in other cultures, sometimes in areas where electricity was a concept awaiting fruition and a book was an extreme luxury. While she could easily adjust to the lack of electricity, living without the comfort of a good book was intolerable. To fill the void, she bought pencil and paper and sketched out her own story. In the process, Sarah discovered the joy of writing.
Sarah writes what she loves to read; fast paced stories with vivid dialogue, intense emotion and well developed characters. Her attention to detail in her stories has earned her multiple awards and a reserved spot on Keeper shelves everywhere.
Sarah writes for Ellora's Cave, Harlequin HQN, Harlequin SPICE, Berkley HEAT and Berkley SENSATION.
Good thing Sarah McCarty knows how to write because in the hands of any other author this book would’ve been a classic cootie shelf read what with all the sex for the sake of sex in it and very, very limited story.
All the trappings of a good McCarty western are there: alpha cowboy hero, western lingo, scenery and general western vibe like her Promises series only this one is a contemporary story. The problem: the story, the plot –where are they??? You think you glimpse them every now and again but then you’re back to the heroine’s anal sex obsession. This broad is psycho. That’s all she wants. I don’t think there was any regular sex worth mentioning in this whole book and all that bumping and grinding down her throat (aka fellatio) was just way too much even to register on the ick scale (!) You can have over the top steam scenes but when it’s written crudely it adds nothing to the story apart from making you squirm or go “eww” like 5000 times.
The story pretty much goes that Mac owns a ranch and needs a cook. Jessie applies for the job and sets out to prove to him that she can do the job even if it is hard work. He thought she was a man when she applied so he’s not keen on hiring her. Then they get going dancing the horizontal mambo and suddenly the story stops progressing –unless of course you call “I want anal! I want anal” to no end story advancement. There’s the token problem that needs to be resolved but it’s shoved in there for the sake of padding the pages. Gotta put in something I guess that’s not “I want to suck you/slap me please/I want anal sex now!”, well there’s the “I love you” part too which is just totally unbelievable. Sure they get it on well-enough, but that’s essentially all there is to their “relationship”.
McCarty’s heroes are often good but sometimes go way overboard in the dom department and that was the case with Mac which certainly didn’t “endear” me to him. I’m not a fan of the dom/sub theme but I don’t mind it if it’s well-written –and it so rarely is. This is one of the better ones but I still can’t say I liked it. All that contortionist spanking didn’t seem very sexy and he was just waaaay too bossy even if Jessie did like it. The gagging fellatio was some of the worst I’ve read –a little too “visual” we’ll say. Why she kept wanting it when it made her cry or hurt I just didn’t get even more so with his “just take it baby” attitude –“love” I guess, that’s usually the reason (**sigh sigh**).
The heroine was annoying because she’d do stupid things to prove that she wasn’t a “good girl” –she certainly shucked that image quick enough and went into TSTL mode at times :-/ She’s also too much of a panty creamer/gusher. Another one of those fountain between the legs heroines. Once or twice is passable but this woman needed a plumber (!)
Throughout all her novels McCarty has a “problem” with, ahem, size. Mac was hung like a 2kg salami (!). At one point Jessie says that she can’t put both her hands around his thingy because he’s so big –that’s quite frightening actually. I’m all for embellishing certain attributes but it’s not a paranormal romance so relax and don’t scare the bejeezus out of your reader or have them do a creepy “what the…???” with their face.
So if you like lots of graphic sex that’s generally well-written I could see someone giving this book a 4 star rating, but if you like a bit of story thrown in for good measure ( a novel idea I know) then this book can run from 1 to 3 stars max. Like I said, good thing it’s McCarty writing it, at least she has some talent and doesn’t make you feel all raunchy/yucky /I need a shower with bleach while reading most of it unlike some authors who shall remain nameless (*cough* Rhyannon Byrd, *cough cough* Lora Leigh) do . Approach with caution :)
Well now. How to describe "Mac's Law" by Sarah McCarty? It's assuredly erotica, of that there is no doubt. There's quite the array of sexual acts described in graphic detail. You've got yer oral, anal, & vaginal sex, you've got self-pleasure, twosomes, and a threesome! There's also emotion and feelings, BUT...there were also a few things that just 'rubbed' me the wrong way (pun fully intended).
Jessica is a technical virgin (more on that later) who has spent the last ten years caring for a failing parent which left no time for 'boyfriends' or relationships. Now she's free and 200 percent ready to make up for lost time. She even has a list of the sexual acts she intends to try which she's added to during extensive reading over her 'dry' years!
Mac is a sexy, dominant (in every way) rancher. When he realizes the cook he hired (J.C.) is actually a young, attractive woman, he's not happy. Especially since he's so very attracted to her. Mac's mother suffered from depression and eventually committed suicide and Mac is convinced it was the isolation and loneliness of ranching life that caused her death. So he has no intention of taking on this city girl, even if she thinks she can handle it.
All right. The upside is that Sarah McCarty can write some of the most scorching sex scenes to hit the pages of a book. I guarantee you will be 'hot and bothered' from at least one of the myriad sex scenes in this book. I also liked the fact that this book is a full novel, 352 pages! So you certainly get your money's worth.
The downside. I think this was likely written earlier in McCarty's career as the characters aren't as realistically developed as in her later books. Jessica is very small compared to Mac, and Mac is apparently hung like the proverbial horse, yet Jessica is obsessed with anal sex. She also takes to dominance, spankings, and light pain like a horse to water and I find that hard to believe for a virgin, even a well-read one. Mac is a fantastic Alpha master, attuned to his woman and her pleasure. BUT, he's also a moron at times. Call me elitist, but I absolutely HATE when Alphas get stupid. His inability to cope with his mother's death and over-protectiveness were just a bit too much for me.
Having said all this, I did enjoy the book. It won't be a keeper for me, but I am glad I read it. And if the things I mentioned above won't bug you, and you're looking for a veritable feast of sex...this is surely the book for you!
This book is really hot. I mean, lots of sex with no break in between hot! I enjoyed this book a lot, however the ending dissolved a bit for me, so that's why I gave it only 3 stars.
Jessie is a chef that comes to Mac's town to work at his ranch as the cook. When Mac hired her, he didn't realize she was a woman because she went by the initials J.C. When she gets there, he tries to send her away, but she is bound and determined to prove herself to him.
Jessie is so attracted to Mac... she thinks he could be "the one" to try all her sexual fantasies with. Jessie is a virgin, and has a long list of sexual things she wants to accomplish. When she feels brave one day, she gives the list to Mac. Little does she know that Mac will do everything on that list that she wants, but it will all be on his terms. He likes to be in charge during sex.
Jessie fights this at first, but then they really do have hot smoking sex! She really has a few hangups about sex though, and Mac has a few emotional hang ups as well. They work together through the book (in between sex which isnt that often) to understand each other better.
There is a HEA at the end, although there were some silly mistrust issues that seem to take forever to work themselves out. Overall, if your looking for hot sex read this. If your looking for a deep story line, this might not be the book for you.
Jessi Sterns has always been the good girl. She's been taking care of her mother for so long and now that her mother has died, she's finally free of responsibility and she's determined to make up for lost time. Armed with the contract for a job opportunity, she steps off the bus in Round the Bend, Texas and is immediately thrust into the wild and crazy nightlife of this sleepy little town. Mac Hollister comes to her rescue from a slightly loco, wannabe Injun and he's pondering the possibility of an affair when she tells him that she's his newest cook. Mac takes one look at her and knows this manicured little honey blonde is the worst kind of distraction and he does his best to dissuade her from the ranch life. Jessi has been cooped up for so long and being out in the bright, wide open brings joy to her heart and she enjoys teasing this bad boy cowboy right out of his mind. Not one to beat around the bush, Mac and Jessi quickly fall into a red, hot love affair that is unbelievably spicy and naughty. Their scorching love play will set fire to your bed sheets and pretty soon you are going to create your own sexual to-do list based off this book alone!
Ay Carumba! This was scorching. Whew! I haven't read very many Sarah McCarty books, but this was the most blush inducing. Silver bullet + Mac = HOLY %$#!@! I had to tell my husband about this scene and now he won't put his back to me. He's facing off against me like we're gunslingers or something. Geez.
While Mac might be a walking, talking testament to the phrase, "They grow things bigger in Texas" this bad boy has a soft side and it's easily bruised. When Jessi is hurt on the ranch, Mac immediately lays down the law and tries to wrap her in cotton wool. Jessi isn't having any of that and demands that before he takes her heart, he needs to heal his own first.
I have to say, I am not a member of PETA. But I was really squeamish about the whole chicken/axe scene. Mac is trying to push Jessi away and one of his plans is to make ranch life unbearably hard for her and he forces her to slaughter her own chickens. She's got the chicken and she's got the axe and I nearly stopped reading. I've read books where the heroine is horrifically abused. I've read scenes of unbearable torture (Heartsick, anyone?) and I've never felt as I did with that chicken. I'm sad to say if that axe had fallen by her hands, I would have had to have stopped reading. I was seriously bracing myself and I was gingerly turning the pages. I'm happy to say that the chicken lived but I also think I lost respect for myself. Oh, well.
The ending of this book was a little abrupt. Especially after all the many sex scenes. (what did you expect?) But I thought it was also so poignant and sweet. Mac has some momma issues and Jessi demands that he deals with it and when he comes back for her and tells her about his therapy, I thought it was absolutely wonderful that Sarah McCarty included his feelings. It gave meaning to what is essentially just hot, steamy erotica, and I thought it was empowering. There are two close but no cigar menage scenes (though I would classify the second one as a menage) with Mac's friend, Zach, and I really, really hope that Sarah McCarty continues this series with his story. Jessi leads this poor guy on not once, but twice! I felt so bad for him!
I highly recommend this book. It's really sexy and also really, really funny. Especially the first half of the book. Mac's Law will keep you panting and laughing and I really enjoyed it.
I like fiction in my books, but there needs to be a dose of realism in there...somewhere...and this book lacked that for me. Jessica was a 29 year old virgin/nempho. (eyes rolling). No, that's not a typo: twenty-nine. Mac accomplished feats that were physically impossible (more eye rolling). Jessica has a LIST of things she would like to do when she found a man she wanted to do them with...and what a list she had.
There was very little plot to this book and I didn't care for the "need to dominate" from Mac. There were many places in the book that I couldn't tell who was talking and even more places where it looked words were inadvertently left out and it made the dialogue stutter. Finally, an erotic book author, copy editor or publisher should have caught the incorrect use of the word "come" throughout the book.
Mac Hollister thinks he has had another no show on the cook he has hired for his ranch, while waiting in the town bar he spots a stunning woman who seems completely out of her element in all her refinery. Jessica Sterns has patiently been waiting for her new boss to arrive so she can get to work, when Mac intervenes after a local comes on too strong she finds that she may have just found her first lover in the flesh.
When Mac realizes the minx with an attitude in front of him is actually his new cook, who he thought was a man, he flatly tells her to get on the bus and head out of town. Jessica wont let the fact that she is a woman stand in her way of a new life, not one to stand done she turns the table on Mac citing a violation of her contract if he refuses. All Mac has to do is get through is two weeks before he can send her on her way, but it only takes a few minutes in her company to know he wants her forever.
Loved this book, it is raw and intense. Jessica is an innocent in only one way, but the rest of her is pure Vixen. I have to say the way Sarah McCarty wrote Mac just oozes charisma. This is one book you have to clear your calendar and just plan on sitting and reading, because you can't wait to see what happens next.
**Reread, this is a fantastic read, a sizzler to be sure. Mac keeps a lot of his emotions in except when it comes to the bedrooom. Loved Jessie she is a breath of fresh air.
I don't like DNFs.. If i have started a book, i have to finish it, however torturing it may be. And thats the reason this book has been lying on my currently reading shelf from so long.
That being said, I hated Mac's law. Its not a novel, its a porn book. Each sex scene's average is 40 pages. Then 10 pages of story and other characters will do something annoying and we will be back to fu.king again. Fu.ck. Fu.ck. Fu.ck. Fu.ck!!!!!! Why did they have to fu.ck so much!!! Aarrrgh..
I understand that its an erotica, but I like reading erotica, menage scenes and some a.s play. But that book aught to have some character development, love or i would settle for lust as well. But this endless fu.king is not my cup of tea.
This book had the most pervert heroine i have ever encountered. The book should be named "HOW TO FU.CK JESSE IN THE A.S"!!! after her. She got it in the end and many congratulations to her. The last 50 pages is focused solely on that!!!
After reading The Promises series (which I loved by the way), it couldn't be greater disappointment. Am skeptical of starting any other books by her now. Lets see...
"I like my women obedient." "Wouldn't a dog be less expensive?"
Truer words could never have been spoken. I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. I am a sucker for a woman fighting her way into a "man's world". I am also a sucker for hot cowboys. It's a weakness. I have come to terms with it.
There was a little bit of every type of sex that can occur between consenting opposite sex adults in this book.
Honestly I felt this book drag during the "I want lots of sex, and I want you to take charge of it, but I don't want you to be in charge of me, even though you are a noted control-freak strong cowboy man" phase.
There were a few yuk words for me in the sex scenes (the dreaded turgid made an appearance)but as I said in our group discussion there was sooooo much sex that I think the author had to use every freakin term in existance to keep from too much repitition.
I had laugh moments and squirm in my seat moments. Yes this book made me jump my husband so in his eyes this was a 5 star. LOL.
O---kay. So, yes, this is a very HOT book. No stupid misunderstandings - always a plus for me - and a very sexy hero and equally sexy best friend (if you know what I mean), so why no more than 3 stars? The heroine's (author's?) preoccupation with - shall we say the, uh "flip" side of intimate relations? Apparently, this way of performing the act was the be-all, END-all (pun intended) for her, but it does NOT hold the same attraction for me. She obviously wasn't going to be truly happy until our hero, uh, went there, and this was somehow tied in to his protective attitude toward her and her feeling smothered. Between their talking about it, leading up to it, and, finally, going "all the way", I thought there was just way too many pages devoted to this one pathway. Now, if I only knew if this preocupation carries over into this author's other books, because I think I could really like this author otherwise.
Sarah McCarty is becoming an all-time favorite of mine in the field of western erotic writers. This is my first of hers but not my last. I certainly hope this Unchained Series continues being written. She has many books out and the "Promise" series is just wonderful. Promises Reveal will be out in October.
I met Sarah at the Lori Foster/Dianne Castell get together in June 2008. She is a friendly wonderful woman with incredible blue eyes. She is also a gadget person like I. Keep on writing and I will continue to read, Sarah.
There was an attempt at a story here but the sex was so abundant that the author lost the thread of several plots she had going and left too many balls in the air (so to speak.) The sexual positions were impossible to imagine (the Kama Sutra came to mind), and I wondered several times if the heroine had a rubber vagina/behind, she saw so much action. Most likely this will be the last book I read by this author.
There is no way to read a Sarah McCarty book without getting hot and bothered. This one is even more so. A little light on the story but it makes up for it with a lot of hot, hot sex in every conceivable place and position.
Wowza. Good, classic, EROTIC romance. Amazing how believable and deep the two main characters and their romance are, considering the book is at least 80% love scenes (btw, there’s a lot of focus on anal, so if that’s your thing, yay, if not, you might want to take a pass). It’s not just the characters that are well-drawn, the setting is laid with just enough detail to feel authentic, and it’s woven into the characters’ actions. The timing of the perspective (third person, thank you very much) shifts are just right for me, and there’s lots from Mac. He is an awesome Dominant hero, authoritative and caring. Jessie is sassy, more masochistic than submissive, and not stupid. There’s not a lot of room for external plot, so don’t expect much. I got the feeling some of the secondary characters were being set up for their own books, but not overly so (which is good, because that never happened :<().
Since first discovering Sarah McCarty's works I have been a big fan. This book did not disappoint. Mac and Jesse were perfect for each other. Mac the strong Alpha Cowboy, but Jesse is no pushover either. Would recommend any Sarah McCarty book.
Los diálogos no se entienden bien, no sé si por la traducción o por la narración. Cuando llega a las escenas de sexo resultan muy mecánicas. Lo dejo y no sigo leyendo más de esta autora
I tried, I tried so hard. Between the heroine being tstl and the hero’s grunting, its a very old school romance novel. Unfortunately, I’d expected more from Sarah McCarty.
Pure erotica with some set up as an attempt to create some plot. As far as erotica goes, this one is fine. McCarty knows how to write a really good sex scene.
The biggest annoyance, though, and thus the two stars is the extreme eye-rolling factor of the heroine/hero set up. Jessie, the heroine, is a virgin with a list of sexual acts she'd like to try. Mac the hero is a Dominant who plans to fulfill her desires. Jessie's list isn't just vanilla. She wants vaginal, anal, oral, threesomes, spankings, toys etc. Mac is all, game on! Mac is also extremely well endowed (...well of course he is). Mac devirginizes Jessie in all her orifices and everything is just cricket after that first encounter. So much so that she's ready and raring to go the next day too! Cue, extreme eye roll here. The other eye roller was that the reason Jessie was still a virgin was because she was busy taking care of her ill mother to have relationships. And the one guy she did try to get it on with pre-Mac, was too disgusted by her over-eagerness and her clumsy attempts at hinting at wanting anal sex. Even Mac had to roll his eyes at that one.
It may seem like a small thing, but those details just annoy me and sit on my brain as I am reading the book so they impede my ability to take anything about the book seriously.
I started out this book really liking it. Jessie was a force to be reckoned with and Mac was about as Alpha as they come so, I settled in and was ready to take a great ride. Unfortunately about 33% in the story just went "meh" for me. Don't get me wrong, there are some smokin' hot sex scenes in this book, you just better like to read at a minimum 20 pages worth of the same scene. It became redundant and stale. **frowning** Also, the over use of words such as "cream" and "channel" left me wanting to throw my device across the room.
If you like erotica this book is definitely that. I really enjoy more of a story line with my erotica though. It started out great, it just could've been so much more. 2.5 stars
The synopes of this sounded good, but it was just bad. I wont go so far as to say it was terrible but I just couldn't get over the human pretzel sex that happened all the time in this book. The scenes and descriptions came off as long winded and almost clinical. I got tried of reading and trying to figure out what position they were in or would turn out to be in the end. Also I like sweet endearments as much as the next girl but Mac's "Honey Girl" nickname for Jessie was not sexy or sweet, it sounded contrived and creepy.
It had promise but the overwhelming pretzel sex was overkill and I just was never able to get into it. Too bad, it was a decent sized book but not a keeper, this one will not be staying.
i actually felt hot as hell read this book..it was funny, hilarious, but the sex scene to much erotic he he he......
awww i loved jessie so much, shes funny, feisty, warm heart and dont let anybody intimidate her..shes really compatible with mac..hes very big, rough, had issued but very much in love with jessie.. they were compatible at everywhere...
mac really cared with jessie, hes tried to full fill jessie fantasy eventhough havin treesome ..(thats to heavy for me) but at the end..thats just for fantasy, jessie finally only wanted mac for herself...
i loved those 2..they had a very refreshing bantered conversation
I should have taken the other reviews to heart: the plot of this book is thin, and the sex is excessive and unnecessarily complicated. Mac's Law falls far short of other Sarah McCarty books. I particularly enjoyed the Promises series, and most of the Hell's Eight series. If you are expecting a story of that quality, I would pass on this book.
So wow, that was a hot, little read. And some humor, too, which is good. The one thing that never really came to fruition was the thing with Jute. And/or Jeremy. So I'm not sure what the point of it was. I wasn't expecting the bit of menage that was in it. She sure did have some ideas about the kind of sex she wanted to have for being a 29-year-old virgin! I guess I wasn't sure what to expect -- this was a group read and I hadn't really heard much about it -- but overall, it was a very sexy read.
3.5 stars. This book reminded me of that little girl my mom always talked about. You know, the one with curl in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, she was very good, but when she was bad... The good parts of this book were great! However, the bad parts were really bad. There was a whole section of the story in the middle that I couldn't figure out what it was doing there. There were sections that I have bookmarked to re-read again and again.
It's not that this is badly written or anything, it's just very unrealistic and could have built up better toward the end moment, by having them engage in a normal relationship first and then have her come up with a to do list, rather than have a virgin demand anal from the beginning when she can't even take his even-bigger-than-porn-actors dick in the regular place.
So I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. It felt like the story was week and the whole book was sex all the time. I made it half way through, and decided to flip through the remaining chapters to see how it ended. It was so, so..,,,,
