کتاب دایره المعارفِ کوچکی از نظریه های ادبی است. برای مخاطبِ پیگیر کتابِ خوبی است. دسته بندی منسجم و مرتّبی دارد و کار را برای ادامه ی مطالعه در این موضوع راحت می کند. اما برای فهمیدن نظریه ها باید به سراغِ کتاب های کامل تری رفت.

منذ مدة لم اقرأ في النقد وهو مجال أحب القراءة فيه..وهذا الكتاب أنعش ذاكرتي بخصوص المدارس والاتجاهات النقدية في تحليل النصوص الأدبية..ويعتبر الكتاب مناسب جداً لمن أرد أن يتعرف بشكل مختصر وشامل على نشوء نظرية الأدب وماذا نعني أساساً بنظرية الأدب ولماذا نحتاج للنظريات في دراسة الأدب؟ ومتى جاءت الحاجة إليها وكيف نشأت؟

يرصد الكاتب ديفيد كارتر المشهد النقدي من جذوره وبدايات نشأته التي ارتبطت بالأدب الإنجليزي وانطلاقاً منه بدأت الاتجاهات النقدية ،في البداية ارتبط النقد بتحليل الشعر ثم توسعت المعايير لتشمل تحليل الرواية ثم بقية الأجناس الأدبية وصولاً إلى العرق والجنس بل وحتى البيئة.

يتوقف الكاتب عند مؤسسي كل تيار والمؤثرين فيه وأهم الكتب التي طرحوا فيها نظرياتهم النقدية والأساس الذي يقوم عليه هذا المنهج أو التيار في تحليل ونقد النصوص الأدبية سواء كان يعتمد على السياق التاريخي مثلاً أو اللغة أو الجمال أو الرمز أو الشكل وغيرها من المنطلقات التي تفرعت كثيراً وصولاً إلى مرحلة ما بعد النظرية.

الكتاب يمنح القارئ الأساس فقط والخلاصة حول كل نظرية لذلك اعتبره مثالياً لمن يريد التعرف على المدارس النقدية حيث يذكر أنه تعمد ذكر أسماء المفكرين والأدباء بشكل بارز مع أهم كتبهم لينطلق منها القارئ ويبحث ويتوسع بنفسه في التعرف على أيٍ منها.

طبعاً خرجت بعد قراءة هذا الكتاب بقائمة عناوين طويلة حول عملية القراءة وتحليل النصوص التي سأحرص على قراءتها مستقبلاً.

This book, besides the one by Terry Eagleton and the other by Jonathan Culler, is essential in literary studies, and those who study literature or theory should not miss these books. The draw a great thinking map for the whole works about the literary theories. Not only listing these works but also put them in a chronological and logical timeframe to give you a sense of how literary thinkers develop their lenses about literature by critiquing their ancestors and build upon their thoughts. These books, and this book, in particular, should be re-read again and again and must be read at universities level and discussed among researchers and scholars.

Dry as hell, but what do you expect from a 'Pocket Essentials' guide? Lit Crit is something I've no experience with, and want to spend some time learning about, so I figured a broad overview might not be the worst place to start. Now that I have, I know which parts I find interesting and which parts seem really dull, or beside the point, or just outside my own realm of interest. But it's a short enough book that it was fine for what it was.
