About the author

Johan Rundberg föddes 1973 i Knislinge i Skåne, men bosatte sig som vuxen i Stockholm. Han upptäckte glädjen i att skriva och läsa under tidiga skolår, och var en flitig biblioteksbesökare. Så småningom läste han litteraturvetenskap och tv-produktion på universitetet. Det ledde honom till jobb på SVT och MTG. Från sin utbildningstid hade han även erfarenhet av att jobba med bildsatta manus. Därifrån hämtade han inspiration till att också prova att göra bilderböcker.

I have truly loved this series; I love how the author doesn't sugarcoat what life was like in a state run orphanage in 1880's Sweden, and it really helps make the story more believable all while making you think AND be grateful for ones life now. I thought #3 was the final book, and so I was very excited to see this book come up when I was doing a search for something else and I may or may not have squealed in delight. and am SO HAPPY that it was as good as the previous three books!

This book finds Mika and Detective Hoff on a journey to finally find Mika's mother and it is not an easy journey, nor is the experience, once they arrive, an easy OR pleasant one and it will take all of their wits and detective skills to figure things out, solve the mystery, and save the day!

Once again, this is an absolutely fantastic series; I highly recommend it.

Nina Yndis is a spectacular narrator and I have so enjoyed her tellings of Mika and Detective Hoff's stories and that is the case again here. She truly makes the story come alive and I am always glad to see her name as narrator when these books pop up. I highly recommend the audiobooks for this series.

Fjärde boken i den historiska serien Månvind & Hoff. Rekommenderar starkt att läsa dessa böcker i ordning, annars kan det vara svårt att hänga med i handlingen.

Mika och Valdemar är tillbaka igen. Den här gången kommer de fram till Gilles gods för att försöka få tag på Mikas mamma. Skumma krafter är i görningen på godset, en mystisk varelse stryker omkring ute på nätterna. Har det något att göra med seansen som hållits att göra?

Handlingen är lite lätt Scoobi-Do inspirerad då det vid första anblick verkar vara något övernaturligt. Men spoiler alert, det finns en annan förklaring.

Jag tycker inte att den här var lika bra som de tidigare böckerna i serien, men Rundberg håller fortfarande en hög litterär kvalitet.

I’m wondering if this book suffered from a less than stellar translation.

This series is very well liked in Sweden, but the English language version left me wanting. It’s a fine story if you like low stakes mysteries, but the characters feel clumsily drawn and archetypal and the book has almost no atmosphere.

There’s an interesting relationship dynamic between Mika and Valdemar, but that’s the only real draw of this. The mystery is a fairly straightforward inheritance plot with a personal twist for Mika thrown in, but little exists to flesh out that story or create any kind of immersive sense of place.

The circumstances that help Mika and Valdemar get their in at the home where her mother worked are cleverly conceived, but I struggled to invest in the story in general.

Mika Moonwind and Vlademar Hoff have left Stockholm to find Mika’s mother. When they arrive at the estate in Northern Sweden, where Annie Moonwind was banished to work after leaving her daughter in a children’s home, they find her being held prisoner for crimes which appear impossible. Hoff is still compromised from their last case and may not physically be able to help his assistant in proving her mother’s innocence. But can there be guilt or innocence when the supernatural is involved?

I scooped this up as soon as it dropped on Kindle Unlimited. It is difficult, and just a little bit thrilling, to wait for the next book in an anticipated series to drop. I’m happy to see that it would appear open-ended as the inevitable detective agency is about to set down roots. As implausible as it is to have a thirteen-year old girl and an aging ex-policeman in cahoots with each other, but I will be there for all of it. I just wish I didn’t need to wait so long for the translation to take place but I’m much too old to learn Swedish. For a middle-grade series it not afraid to go into fairly dark territory, although this one was less grisly than the first three. The Victorian (can an era be identified by another nationality’s ruler?) setting is visceral.

I den här spännande fortsättningen på serien Månvind & Hoff så reser duon mot Uppsala för att hitta Mikas mamma. Valdemar visar sig vara väldigt sjuk och Mika får därför klara sig själv när hon tampas med osaliga andar och familjehemligheter kring godset Rosengåva. Det blir både läskigt och mysigt att läsa och lyssna plus lite exotiskt att läsa en bok för yngre läsare som utspelar sig under 1800-talet. Rekommenderas till alla och jag längtar till nästa bok i serien!

Precis som jag började 2022 så börjar jag detta året med att lyssna på senaste delen av Johan Rundbergs fantastiska serie om Mika Månvind.

Mika och Valdemar reser till godset Rosengåva för att hitta Mikas mamma. På resan dit blir Valdemar sjuk av en skada han fick i senaste boken och när Mika lyckats ta dem till godset så händer det konstiga saker. Godset sägs vara hemsökt och Mikas mamma är anklagad för att ha framkallat det.

Författaren skriver så engagerande och spännande om den 12-åriga barnhemsflickan som hamnar i de mest konstiga situationerna. I den här boken blir det riktigt läskigt emellanåt och jag som läsare vet inte vad jag ska tro. Det är riktigt intressant att få läsa ur ett barns perspektiv, men också om hur det var på samhällets lägre skikt under 1800-talet.

Olof Wretling gör dessutom en otroligt bra inläsning, jag älskar att lyssna på dessa böcker.

För att vara en deckarserie för barn är det helt fantastiskt hur Rundberg lyckas hålla uppe drivet och spänningen och ändå förnya sig. Det här pusslet löses, så klart, i grevens tid i bästa Agatha Christie stil, men vägen dit är allt annat än spikrak och slutet den här gången är en cliffhanger som leder en vidare till den avslutande delen av Månvind & Hoff.

Läsålder 9-12 år. Eller 33 🤓

Alltså jag kan ju inte annat än att fortsätta kasta lovord efter Johan Rundberg. Får man verkligen skriva såhär bra? Håll i er nu, för på riktigt, den här bokserien kvalar in bland de absolut bästa, mest välskrivna bokserier jag någonsin har läst, alla åldersgrupper och genrer inräknade. För mig är det ett gäng "vuxenserier", Harry Potter och så Månvind & Hoff. Där. Så. Fenomenalt!

Boken börjar med en intensiv mystik och jag är fast från start, i vanlig ordning. Jag sugs in i något som ter sig som en kuslig spökhistoria och det är omöjligt att lägga ifrån sig boken. Språket är målande, miljöerna så levande att jag befinner mig precis där vid Valdemars och Mikas sida. Jag älskar att följa dem på deras uppdrag och att rota i Mikas förflutna. Deras jargong är oslagbar och jag vill bara vara deras vän och hänga med dem!

Mot slutet var det grymt spännande och jag kunde inte klura ut vad det var som pågick och varför. En riktigt rafflande upplösning och nu sitter jag här igen med boksmälla och en innerlig längtan efter nästa bok!

I de tre tidigare delarna av serien har läsaren upplevt ett fattigt, skitigt, förtryckande, nedgånget, sjukt Stockholm; men här kommer äntligen Månvind och Hoff ut på landet. Där, visar det sig, är det lika fattigt och nedgånget, skitigt och förtryckande, och sjukt. Mika åker till Rosengård, vid Morgongåva, sökande sin mamma. Trots de vackra namnen är det inga trevliga ställen. Herrgården är på fall. Familjen Gille är inte lycklig; inte den gamla grevinnan, inte greven, inte hans hustru, inte hans dotter, och för den delen inte deras drängar eller pigor eller deras barn heller. Mika tillhör oxå familjen Gille, om än som "oäkting". Hon är inte heller så glad. Undra på det, hennes mor är inspärrad anklagad för samröre med de mörka krafterna.

Den här serien har, för mig, utmärkt sig framförallt som socialrealistisk, med betoning på realistisk. I den här delen kommer dock det andliga att träda fram på olika sätt. Några av de här sätten är iscensatta av människor men några förblir oförklarliga.

Till och med den ståndaktiga Konstapel Hoff:
"- Här finns något, säger han och markerar med foten.
- Hur ...? börjar Mika utan att avsluta meningen.
Valdemar ler åt hennes förstummade min.
- Det är inte trolleri, säger han. Slagruta är en gammal metod för att hitta vatten..." s. 170

Det finns andra mystiska saker som händer, av vilka några spökteckningar kanske är de märkligaste, och de mest skrämmande. Teckningarna görs via en psykograf ett sorts förfinat ouija-bräde.

Det största mysteriet i boken är annars "vad är mysteriet?" Mikas mor är inlåst, anklagad för svartkonst. Läsaren tror inte på det men om hon är oskyldig varför tror folk att hon har åkallat djävulen? Har det något samband med det osynliga väsendet som smyger runt herrgården på nätterna och ger hemska skri? De flesta på herrgården har blivit sjuka, har det betydelse? Vad var det som hände den gamla grevinnans syster för länge sedan? Är det hon som spökar? Finns det spöken? Det finns många frågor men läsaren får vänta länge på svar. Svaret är en konspiration, något jag alltid ogillar i mysterieböcker!.

Slutet är ändock ganska gott. Istället för den hunsade flickan som har grubblat men knappast agerat genom historien får Mika äntligen stå på sig och glänsa.

Denna serie utmärks inte av sin humor så jag blev glad när jag fick läsa:
"...Fager är faktiskt legitimerad apotekare.
- Några små tentamina ifrån bara, flikar Fager in. Jag har länge tänkt slutföra studierna. Men ...
En hickning undslipper honom.
- ... saker har kommit emellan." s. 201

Chanserna att Mika och hennes mamma kommer att få ett bra liv tillsammans verkar små. Hoff lever men av vad skall han leva? Han är gammal och sliten och har inget jobb. Framtiden ser mörkt ut, fattigt och förmodligen skitigt och sjukt.

Det är som vanligt, med andra ord. Herr Rundberg har återigen skapat en ganska mörk historia med mycket atmosfär och tidsnycklar som öppnar dörrarna till en annan värld. Som i de bättre efter-apokalypsen historier, tittar läsaren upp och ser sig om och tänker: vad skönt att vi lever nu och inte då. Det var faktiskt mycket värre förr. Fast folk hade inte en pågående klimatkris på den tiden, hängande över dem som ett damoklessvärd...

The Lady of Shadows is the latest book in the Moonwind Mysteries series by Johan Rundberg. This is a middle grade mystery series, that features a young orphan girl and a detective, solving murders and crimes. I love to refer to it as a middle grade Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, with Mika playing the role of Lisbeth, the insanely smart female counterpart. Seriously though, despite being middle grade, I love this series so much, and I think it would be entertaining for anyone of any age to read.

Book 4 has our crime solving duo headed to the country to finally meet Mika’s mother. But when they arrive, they find she’s been accused of a crime and is being held prisoner. Can they solve the crime and free her mother? Or will her mother be swept away to prison, right when she’s finally found her?

I thought the audiobook was done nicely. The narrator did a great job keeping me interested in the book, and I really enjoyed listening to it, though I usually prefer reading books. Overall, the book is great, and the audiobook was also great to listen to!

In The Lady of Shadows, the fourth installment of the Moonwind Mysteries, Johan Rundberg takes us away from the familiar streets of Stockholm and into the tense atmosphere of a remote country estate. The stakes have never been higher for Mika as she and Detective Hoff search for her mother, Annie Moonwind, only to find her facing arrest for a series of mysterious crimes.

The emotional core of this book is Mika’s confrontation with her grandmother—the woman responsible for the harrowing attempt on her life at the Dark Angel. While the mystery is engaging, it’s these deep-seated family tensions that really drive the narrative.

Audiobook Note: Nina Yndis continues to be a standout narrator. She brings a remarkable depth to Mika, capturing her resilience and vulnerability as she faces her past.

I absolutely love The Moonwind Mysteries series by Johan Rundberg. The Lady of Shadows continues the story of Mika, a young girl who lives at a state-run orphanage in Stockholm and helps a local police detective solve mysteries. In this book (the fourth in the series) Mika and Inspector Hoff are going to a private estate in the country to find Mika's mother, who was forced to give her up when she was an infant. When they arrive, they find that Mika's mother is being detained (essentially for witchcraft) and instead of the heartfelt reunion of Mika's dreams, she and Hoff find themselves with a mystery to solve.

This book was a lot of fun to read and I don't care one bit that it's probably intended for middle-grade readers. 😌

The Lady of shadows, book 4 in the Moonwind Mysteries series (caught up english translation).

What a great continuation or end not sure if the series will continue in English. I really hope it does if it is continued.

The story really took off into these spooky factory, and I absolutely loved it. There was some great character growth in coming-of-age with the MC.

I enjoy this author’s writing and just how much I was brought into the story.

There were several subtle reminders that made it nice for those that haven’t read the series in continuum. I do think that this is better read in series order

I’ve come to love Mika and these books. As we get more information about her life, it becomes hard not to root for her. In this book, I was immediately reminded why she’s so awesome and not to be messed with. We also get more background about her history and important new characters are introduced. The story here tips a little into the supernatural, but I also thought it illuminated how class works in their world. This was another strong entry.

I love this series, the perfect mix of light-hearted but still interesting with a smidge of intensity mysteries. Kind of Scooby Doo-esque with the 'I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for this meddling kid' style but with actual thought process behind the storyline and a lot less slap stick humor. Originally written in Swedish, so there are some things probably lost in translation or changed slightly for readability but I'd you like low-key but still slightly complex mysteries that are a quick read, this series is for you.

I honestly don't know how to describe these books. Mika is so young and caring but has to deal with such harsh circumstances, and she's so strong. This one has a totally different setting and she finally gets to see her mother, and that's so complicated. I've read the others in print versions and this is the first audiobook for me, and I thought the narrator did a terrific job.

Mika is finally going to meet her mother. But when she and Valdemar arrive at the estate where she is living, there is a case of mistaken identity. They are pulled into an investigation possibly involving the supernatural. While the story is not predictable, I was able to put most of the puzzle pieces together. The pace picked up near the end as everything came together. I’m hoping we get more books so we can see how Mika and Valdemar’s journey continues.

Well written. also, this author knows how to end a book. The ending is completely satisfying, but if there is another book about Mika, I'd be on it in an instant.
The person who recorded it (this was my exercise audiobook) was good overall, but it's rather odd having someone for whom English is a second language read. 98% great, but about two dozen mispronunciations. The two I remember are whittish for whitish and RATtan for rattan.

I didn’t realize the series continued after book three so when I saw the opportunity to get an audio of book four, I jumped on the chance. I read the first books and really love the way the narration was done. Rundberg is a master of mystery and he keeps me coming back for more! I love the characters and the way they continue to develop as well as the new characters in The Lady of Shadows. This is a must read for any lover of mysteries!

This book of the Moonwind series finally brought one saga to a close. What will future books hold? I am a firm belieer that folks should read a variety of book so that is why I try to read a few childrens' books a month. I have loved this series since the very first book. Nice characters and descriptions of what life was really like in that time period.( it realy wasn't all that great .) This book made some people very happy and other not so much but a nice tidy ending.
