This is ridiculous, over the top, gory fun and I loved every panel of it.
I'm going to get this out of the way right now-if you're looking for a serious, clever, horror-mystery series, this probably won't be for you. The culprit's over the top villainy combined with the gory deaths and fairly simple detective work makes this come across as an edgy teenager's idea for a mystery-horror series. And yet, all of the things I mentioned are kind of why I had so much fun; it's a simple, gory, over the top supernatural murder mystery. It's not trying to be the manga equivalent to Sherlock Holmes, it's not trying to be philosophical or deep, it's just a manga series about people who want to kill other people, curse gods who give them the ability to do so in the most gruesome ways, and one dude who has to stop them. That's it. If that simplicity is a turn-off, then this isn't the right series for you.
That being said, what I think really shines in this volume (and what I assume will be the case for the whole series) is how it plays up its ridiculous, over the top insanity. The expressions are strong and play up the emotions well in each scene, the paneling is really strong, and the heavy use of shadow in the settings and the characters' expressions really amp up the drama and horror. Not to say this is scary, more so playing up the horror elements. And as stupid as killer cellphones are, it suits a teenage killer really well. I loved being able to see the case progress through the detective's perspective as well as the killer's, even if the mystery part wasn't as mysterious as it could have been. And hell, Saeyama was a fucking trip and I already adore him so much! His assistant, Yamazaki, is adorable as well and I fucking love their dynamic! Also, for a mystery manga, the pacing was really solid and there were enough breaks during the exposition scenes that it didn't feel dense and boring.
So, do I recommend this? Honestly, yes. I know I've shit talked it and I stand by my critiques, but this was a lot of fun! Just in a gory, ridiculous, overly dramatic kind of way rather than a serious murder mystery kind of way. If you want a fast paced, gruesome, murder mystery-horror manga to read, give this one a shot. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Oooooh I did really enjoy this opening volume but I couldn't help but think that this was a bit too similar to Death Note.
Can't Stop Cursing You has a great premise - a curse killer and curse breaker go to head to head in a high school with the latter trying to work out who the curse killer is and putting an end to their bloodthirtsy (and particularly gory) rampages.
We are told in the blurb who the killer (Mikiya) and the breaker (Saeyama) is so this isn't a surprise although what is a surprise are all of the little clauses which accompany the curse killing contract...again reminding me of a certain Death Note.
Saeyama is a great antidote to Mikiya's ego trip and need to be accepted as a Prince-like figure, who cuts through the BS whilst smoking a pipe and sprinkling in his wit. Uruma's artwork is wonderful and really enhances the creepy and gothic tone and Koba's story keeps a solid pace which added to my enjoyment.
I will say though that I didn't like Mikiya from the start which may explain why I didn't give this 5 stars - again, drawing on my feelings towards Death Note, in the beginning I did really like Light until the power went to his head and he was killing people left, right and centre without a regard for anything or anyone...but Mikiya was a little shit from the start and later you see how he treated his brother...ugh, I'm glad he got his comeuppance! So yeah...there was nothing redeeming whatsoever about his character.
The ending was sinisterly intriguing and I will definitely be picking up the sequel as I really enjoyed what I read in the first volume...I just hope it continues to deviate from Death Note.

This was a fun, cheesy, horror/mystery manga to read. Reminded me a bit of Death Note. The art style is great too.

After making a deal with a demonic presence, a young man gains powers to kill that adhere to a very specific ruleset and look like accidents. Now he’s off to change the world. Sorry, I meant he’s off to act like a dick. With an almost-as-misanthropic investigator on his heels, this is one cat and mouse game that’s turning into a real dog and pony show.
Man, it’s been a while since I saw a book so brazen as to rip-off Death Note and this book is a copy paste with a far looser and ridiculous premise about killing people via phone calls. It’s over the top, it’s brash, it’s vicious, it’s dumb as hell.
And I can’t stop thinking about it.
I still don’t know if this book is meant to be a parody of Death Note or not. Our killer, Mikki, is the school prince and his facade is like every glorious shojo male rolled into one and his hidden self is exactly the sort of ‘hurr hurr death is fun’ edgy nonsense I’d expect of a teenager.
The artist really lets loose with his sneering, punchable face and he’s just a perfect antagonist. Mikki has to kill thirty people in thirty days, lest something terrible happen to him for even agreeing to this, so he’s more than happy to just wipe out anybody who ticks him off.
Then we have Saeyama, who is part of a group of special investigators who handle so-called curse kills. He’s a smug idiot-genius of minimal social skills straight out of the Poirot school, except he smokes a pipe and makes woefully inappropriate jokes during a heinous murder investigation.
I love the very few curse hunters we see briefly in a single establishing shot - they’re all clearly a bunch of lunatics with the kind of oddball habits we see in these types of stories and I am dying to know more about all of them. The two we do get to know are amazing just on their own.
It’s all so hilariously overwrought - the faces Mikki makes when he’s in his dark mode, the crazy rules for both the investigator and the investigated. I was dying at how goofy this book is, but it is SO enjoyable to read. Characters are just mowed down with reckless abandon and the one person who should be taking it the most seriously rarely is.
Like, I would read this again right now because it’s just so zany and excessive and it’s making me laugh at how very serious it’s taking itself but at the same time I love that about it. Why not commit to your premise? This book does not care about any issues with its storytelling - it is doing what it wants, how it wants, and you have to respect that.
It’s every excess you ever thought of in a story like this, minus any fan service (which is a boon, this book does not need any help holding your attention). We get the constant maneuvering, the attempt to corner our lead, using people for one’s own ends, useless cops, horribly convoluted plotting, demons meddling for no reason, one last trick to pull it all off. It’s every single thing you want in a story like this.
5 freaking stars. This book is like a car crash mixed with a roller coaster and I am down with a too clever for the room jerk versus a high school snot who thinks he’s even smarter than that. It’s three stars of story but the sheer chutzpah carries this into the stratosphere. It is like pure eyeball candy and everything I could have asked of it. I cannot wait for the next volume.

This ranks at an eleven on the crazy scale - it's never afraid to just crank up that dial on the gore, utterly detestable characters, and twisted logic. It works because it's just so into its whole premise, creating a strange, unsettling world that melds mystery and horror and yet somehow also never takes itself too seriously.

This was so much fun. The manga is very aware of its own absurdity and revels in it. Both the villain and the borderline villainous hero are equally intense, and there are so many hilarious moments. It is definitely dark humor though. But if you are a Death Note fan and want to read something similarly morally grey with a similarly convoluted mystery, I highly recommend this.

August 2023. YA supernatural mystery manga series, saw it when at the library and the name and cover caught my eye. Reading the description sold me and I grabbed all 3 volumes.
*side note, if anyone has mystery manga you like please recommend it!
Really loved this series! Kind of like Death Note with the supernatural mystery based on a contract with a demon/curse god, but without the misogyny and with a new mystery in each volume.
Each volume is a different set of curse-based murders and the main character is trying to solve how each curse works and who the culprit is, and try to stop them from killing more people. I’ve finished the first two of four volumes so much and really enjoying it.
E.g., how the curse is spread, how quickly it kills, what triggers the curse, how/if it can be lifted is different in each case because the culprit made a pact with different motivations and with a different curse god.
It’s got some humor in the character dynamics but isn’t a comedy, a good balance of the dry deadpan lead in a complicated situation with psychopaths.
I requested volume 4 from the library so I hope they get it soon! Definitely recommend for any fans of Death Note, Persona, or other supernatural mystery manga.

And so our first arc ends! Someone who may seem x… but isn’t that much of that at all. A mysterious teacher whose actual job is a curse breaker. Death and murder. And tons of dialogue.
I recently read a review about this manga and was just waiting for this month to appear so I would be able to read it. OK, by the time the review goes up it will be November. XD
When something is amiss in a high school it is up to Cursebreaker Saeyama to infiltrate the school and figure out things before it all goes too far. There is someone who made a contract with a curse god. People are going to die. It was quite an interesting case and I loved that we got to see both sides. The good ones. The bad one(s). We see how the good side tries to figure things out before everyone is dead (with normal and some special ways) and how the bad side is going further and further into a spiral of craziness. The curses were freaking NOPE. Get called? Near people? Bye! Enjoy being murdered in a freaking gore way.
So instead of the Death Note (for which you need to know someone’s real name) in this case you need to know someone’s phone number. That is a pretty interesting one. Though way easier to get than a name. In these times at least. Still a fun requirement. Plus, there are other things that made things quite interesting. Like that someone has to see the caller get called. That the call is noticed. Either by crowds or a third party who looks at the cursed phone. The fact that you can ignore the phone call if you don’t react… however there are also other requirements for that. So yeah, that made things scary and tricky.
I am very curious about curse gods, but also about the curse breakers. Maybe some backstory on either of them would be fantastic and I hope that the next volume (yes, I will keep reading) will give us more hints to that. And also more about Saeyama, because he acts all aloof but we see that he is cunning and shrewd. What kind of cases did he have before this one? Who is the person calling him? How long have these curses been around? I mean, this one took cellphones to start the curse, but is there also other ways?
However it was a bit dialogue heavy. I get that there is a ton to be said and solved, but at times I just found myself tuning out a bit. Like, yeah, I get it. Especially the prince just had way too much dialogue and most of it was just utter BS. I mean, all grand things, and some psychotic stuff. Yes, he did make a good villain. That is 100% true. But I wish I could have tuned him out. XD
The art was pretty fab. I especially loved the facial expressions of the characters. Either normal or when they are going in madness mode as I would call it. The gore parts are also well-drawn, not too much, but also not too little. I mean, there is still plenty to see.
The ending of this arc? I enjoyed it, but I was surprised at how dumb Mikki was in the end. I guess that is a typical villain for you. Thinking they got it all covered… And then we cut to another scene that made me VERY CURIOUS and also NOPING the hell out. Haha. I don’t want to say anything, but I am definitely curious on the rest of the series now. And I guess that Saeyama is now permanent teacher? I would think now the case is over that he can go back to doing whatever he did before, but maybe he likes teaching? I don’t know. XD
All in all, this was one heck of a ride and I am glad I found out about this manga. Gore, scary, curses, mystery, and more!

It's been a while since I was so intrigued by a first volume like this!
I've never read/watched Death Note, but I've heard many people compare this to Death Note and that seems like an accurate comparison. Personally, this series somewhat reminds me of A School Frozen in Time which is another series I enjoy!
Twisted human beings can form contracts with devils that grant them the power to kill others with curses. Enter Saeyama, a curse-breaker with the ability to use the trace curse energy on victims to track down the killers. With every curse kill, Saeyama grows closer to catching the culprit.
It's dark and twisted, but this series has successfully drawn me in.
The detective quite literally needs bodies to solve the case. The killer's identity grows less safe with each kill. The result is a psychological game involving lots of death. Neither can afford to give up, and neither can afford to lose.
Honestly, I didn't really have any expectations for this book going in, but it exceeded all my expectations! I can't wait for volume 2!
Recommended to Death Note fans and to those who enjoy a good psychological read!

this was SO MUCH FUN. very very similar to death note (but i love death note so i'm not complaining). and bestie we got ourselves a seggsy main character. what else could i want in a manga???

I really loved this as an introductory volume to the world. It did a great job of world-building, showing you the characters and what they're like, and left me definitely wanting more! I loved seeing the crime from both perspectives - even if we got significantly less of Saeyama's point of view than Mikiya.

O kurde. Ej to było dobre. Jeśli chodzi o fabule to jest naprawdę ciekawa. I z wielką chęcią sięgnę po 2 tom tej seri.
Myślałam że cała fabuła tej mangi będzie taka że przez całą serie będziemy szukać wraz z bohaterami mordercy. A tu się jednak okazuje że nie będziemy, musieli znaleźć tylko jednego mordercy. Bo ich jest więcej. Znacznie więcej.
Myślałam że cała fabuła tej mangi będzie taka że przez całą serie będziemy szukać wraz z bohaterami mordercy. A tu się jednak okazuje że nie będziemy, musieli znaleźć tylko jednego mordercy. Bo ich jest więcej. Znacznie więcej.

Better then expected. Loved the idea behind it. Was hoping it was more mystery driven anf it was mostly predicatable. However extremely entertaining. Loved the art work as well.

Detective and pseudo death game manga. Pretty fire but a tad too short. Read if you wish death note was an anthology, you deeply flawed individual.

This horror mystery series is a perfect combination of Death Note, Future Diary, and Another. Sae-sensei uses his position as a biology teacher to cover up his true profession: a Curse Breaker. A cat-and-mouse game ensues as he works with new assistant Kanta to determine who’s causing the deaths of several classmates.
The tone of this manga is off to an excellent start. Deeply irreverent with fantastically distorted faces to show off their sinister natures. The font choices also made this incredibly fun.
The mechanism of the curse-killing itself was a little silly, but it was simple enough to set the rules of this world where curse gods give people powers. Plus, it let the readers get a feel for the characters. The last pages showing off who’s really at play really teased my interest, and I definitely can’t wait to read the next volume when it comes out this summer.

At first I thought that the person on the cover was the curse contracter and it would follow him trying to beat the Curse-breaker, and I was half-right - the contracter was the MC for this volume but the cover was of the Curse-Breaker. I found myself rooting for the contracter to win since that's what I thought this volume was about. He was just a delightfully evil character, though I did feel really bad about his twin brother (I'm so glad I don't have an evil twin). I was honestly a bit sad when he was beaten in the end since I was hoping he'd win. You'd think his friend would be a bit more rattled to find out that his friend was secretly a depraved killer, but he just seemed a touch uneasy. I was ready for a morally grey/completely evil MC, but he was just the prelude to the Curse-Breaker. That disappointed me.
