Memoir of an Englishman's odyssey in America. From his arrival in 2016 to departure via an Appalachian road trip, forms the heart of this compelling narrative. This Bryson-esque account, infused with sharp wit and observational humour, transcends typical travelogues, revealing America from within—a place far removed from its global image. Explore the true fabric of American life, from its political complexities and healthcare system to the surprising truths behind its national parks and Hollywood facade. An insightful, entertaining, and truly engrossing read. Prepare to see the real America, through eyes that negotiated its bewildering and often confusing landscape for eight enlightening years.
I have known Andy for a number of years and as stated in his book, he is an ex Mayor of Bideford (UK). As the current Mayor Andy very kindly agreed to speak at our Manor Court this year on Sir Richard Grenville and gifted me a copy of this book.
I was already half way through another book at the time, but started to read the first chapter and just carried on. The narrative of Andy's stay in America, his subsequent decision to leave and the final road trip held my attention completely. As a native of Bideford (UK) I was fascinated with the description and comparisons between my country and America, especially as it was from the perspective of another Englishman.
The book is both a political commentary of the current state of America and travelogue through several of it's States, along with a bit of transatlantic history thrown in. Funny and sad in equal proportions, Andy's observations on the American way of life should interest anyone from either side of the pond.
Would fully recommend this book as a five star read , even if I didn't know the author.
