As I started to write this review, the prompt in the box was: What should readers know about this book? First, it was a quick delightful read! It was full of comparisons about life and sourdough and promptings and learning, and stories that were uplifting, sad, and motivational. One part I especially loved: after Gae-lyn learns how to make her sourdough bread, and begins sharing it, she reports: "There are days when I'm prompted to drop off some bread with no idea why that person is the designated receiver. No big reason to celebrate or be concerned - a gift just to say I was thinking about you. Sharing is the best-loved step in my sourdough process because it's the place where I feel like I'm trying follow the example of Jesus. Giving my sourdough bread away has let to healing conversation, reconnections and sacred encounters. Because of opportunities to share bread, I have received more than I have been given." She feels what began as personal healing for her in a depressing part of her life, became a "sourdough ministry," helping others who needed a lift, a kind word and warm bread, a notice that they were suffering, a hand of friendship. I loved this book for so many reasons, not the least of which were the sourdough hints and recipe, and the constant comparison of life and learning to follow the Savior - and learning how to make a good loaf of sourdough bread, then knowing who needs that to be shared with them. I'm so grateful I received an ARC copy of this delightful book. I've shared the good news of it with many of my sourdough making friends.

Sourdough and the Savior is a beautifully written blend of everyday life, faith, and discipleship, and Chapter 3, “Feed,” was especially meaningful to me. Using sourdough as a metaphor, the author gently teaches that growth—whether in bread, family, business, or faith—comes from consistently feeding the right things in the right way.

What I loved most about this chapter is how practical and reassuring it is. Just as sourdough requires specific ingredients, ratios, and patience, so does spiritual growth. Obedience, commandments, and covenants aren’t restrictive rules—they are loving formulas designed to help us grow. The reminder that what you put in matters felt both simple and profound.

The personal stories woven throughout—from learning to be a new mother, to listening to quiet spiritual promptings, to reflecting on decades of covenant keeping—made this chapter deeply relatable. The connection between obedience and love, modeled perfectly by Jesus Christ, was especially powerful. Obedience here is not framed as perfection, but as trust, consistency, and choosing to feed faith over fear.

This book gently testifies that God keeps His promises, that covenants truly do keep us, and that when we follow the Master Chef’s recipe, growth will come—even if it takes time. Sourdough and the Savior is comforting, insightful, and faith-strengthening, and Chapter 3 alone is worth the read.

Two of my favorite things Jesus and Sourdough! I love the comparison of growth and learning from the sourdough process to the gospel sense of becoming more Christlike. I think it helped that I understood the metaphors of the sourdough making process, but this book is Jesus focused and packed with insightful examples of putting trust in God, and trying again when we feel we have failed. Ganel-Lyn is one of my favorite speakers and so I was excited to read another book by her!

Some of my favorite quotes were “it isn’t always easy to be obedient, but it is a muscle we can strengthen.”

“Don’t be stopped by the fear of failure. Lean into learning, cultivate a creative heart, and embrace the errors along the way. You don’t have to be perfect. Let go of control and just create with curiosity.” And “The people around you won’t remember you for the blunders but for the beautiful bequests you give. The world needs what you can uniquely offer. Keep creating and sharing because it’s what God did and does for us.”

Thank you Cedar Fort Publishing for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I was given an advance copy of this book to review --

I've always enjoyed her books of hope and finding the joy in Him through our everyday lives.
Last year (2025), I started my own journey of getting into sourdough bread making. During that time, I was constantly thinking about the Gospel and how it related to this as I was digging deep, reading all the blogs and books. I just love how relatable she made every step of the journey and also how relatable she made it to our communion with the Savior.

If you love the Savior, and you love (or are working on) Sourdough, you'll enjoy this quick read.

Having recently gotten into making sour dough bread, I was intrigued by the title of this book. And honestly, this author is a must read for me. I love the way she writes her books. It's like you're having a conversation with a dear friend.

I loved the way she likens the steps of making sour dough bread to how the Savior is in our lives. She did this in such an interesting way. I did not want to put this book down, and I read it in an afternoon.

I also loved how the author shared some of her favorite tips for making sour dough bread.

This is such a great inspiring book!

Great quick read from Ganel-Lyn! I loved the beautiful comparisons of sourdough bread for our physical bodies and The Bread of Life, Jesus Christ for our spirits. The personal stories all related well to the lessons of the gospel. I haven’t ever made sourdough bread, but love how this can relate to anything we create and grow in our lives and share with others.

*I received an ARC from the author.

Truly an inspired book. Many good nuggets of information. I love anecdotal stories with a purpose and this was a beautiful message about rediscovery and mental health and personal worth. Healing journeys are some of the best ways to be able to not only share your experience and help others to see and know that they are not alone. This book can help you feel seen and loved. I well definitely be reading this again and sharing it with my friends that need that extra comfort.

The author uses the steps of making sourdough bread as a metaphor for finding deeper faith and trust in our Savior, Jesus Christ. We all face hard things in life and sometimes have to let go of what we thought our life should look like. We need to fully rely on our Savior to get us through. He is the bread of life.

I received an ARC of this book, but the thoughts and rating are my own.
