Resources For and Stories About Veterans Transitioning to Civilian Life
This is the fourth book in the Student-Veteran’s Experience with Higher Education (S-VwHE) series. It focuses on the transition from military service to higher education and civilian life. Transition is more than changing uniforms — it is about redefining identity, discovering new purpose, and facing the challenges of education and community in a new way.
The author shares his own journey of moving from service member to student, highlighting both struggles and successes along the way. His research and reflections provide insight into issues such as PTSD, belonging, and persistence in education. He writes with the hope that other student-veterans will find encouragement as they pursue their academic goals, and that educators will better understand what it means to support a student-veteran in the classroom.
To support this journey, the book also includes practical resume checklists, education benefit guides, PTSD and mental health resources, veteran-friendly organizations, and strategies for success in both academic and civilian life. There are unique challenges in the transition to civilian and academic life, but through determination and support, this story shows that moving forward is possible — and worthwhile.
