Shifter: The Stone Wardens - Book 1

Rate this book
An epic fantasy adventure of lost magic, dangerous journeys, and a half-elf forced to choose between light and darkness.

Arracnoth has known struggles all his life. Orphaned after his adoptive mother’s death, the half-elven wanderer longs for a quiet future with his closest friend, Avanstel. But when three mysterious strangers arrive, everything changes – Avanstel may be the missing heir to an elven kingdom.

Their search for the truth becomes a perilous quest through forgotten lands, where ancient magic stirs, treachery hides in plain sight, and a shadowy enemy pursues them at every turn. In the duplicitous elven society, Arracnoth will uncover arcane secrets, face betrayal, and discover a hidden ancestry that could alter the fate of the entire realm.

But every choice has a cost.

Friendship will be tested. Secrets will be revealed. And destiny will demand its price.

Shifter by Asher H. Boyan is perfect for fans of epic fantasy novels, "chosen one" adventures, and richly woven magical worlds. If you enjoy the intricate worldbuilding of Brandon Sanderson, the political intrigue of Robin Hobb, and the heart of Tolkien’s friendships, this journey will keep you turning pages late into the night.

About the author

Asher has been wandering the realms of fantasy for over three decades - sometimes reading, sometimes writing, and occasionally (often) forgetting to come back to reality. He is the architect of Halbrun, a sprawling continent destined to serve as the backdrop for his planned nine-book Stone Warden series.

The first book, Shifter, was published in September 2025.

When Asher isn't plotting epic quests or wrangling wayward characters, he typically immerses himself in worldbuilding in his 'spot' on the couch in Indianapolis. A former business owner, web developer, and non-profit founder, he spends his free time playing "the world's most popular role-playing game" (alongside some of his characters), visiting with friends (usually talking about his books, much to his wife's chagrin), or - weather permitting - floating lazily in circles around the pool while pondering the mysteries of life (in every world).

A fantastic first effort from a skilled fantasy enthusiast---the world-building is strong, the characters are well-drawn and easy to love (or hate), and the hero's quest is compelling. Plenty of twists and thrills with some great back stories woven in, and an opportunity to get bonus content that I'm looking forward to reading.

Asher has created relatable characters and riveting places that capture my imagination. I wish I could visit these places (well except for the tower at the end…) and go on adventures with these guys. I’m sure we’d end up neck deep in something fun!
