' High school was really over, just like that. He hadn’t even gotten to stop and savor it properly before it passed him by. The next time he looked back, it would only be a memory. Even now, the memory of this last year was already starting to blur. '

The way I started crying from the very beginning of this volume and continued until the very end needs to be studied. This volume was so saturated with feelings of helplessness that even the brief moments of sweetness within it made me shed tears. The overall atmosphere surrounding the story was consistently bleak, punctuated only by small instances where a ray of sunshine seemed to pierce through the darkness. The pain I experienced while reading this volume came and left, but it was always intense, sharp, and deeply painful.

Jiang Cheng, in this volume, broke my heart profoundly; he is a character I am so proud to read about. He is such a resilient and strong individual who has had to endure an unending string of unfair and harsh events thrown at him from all directions. Despite this, he persevered and refused to give up, demonstrating a strength that I deeply admire and respect.

Gu Fei, without a doubt, is a character who evoked in me a strong desire to scream at how utterly unfair and difficult his life is. In this volume, he went through immense stress, with the burdens he had to carry growing even heavier, making it incredibly hard to read about his struggles. I felt an overwhelming wave of heartache and empathy for him.

The relationship between Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei in this volume was filled with tender, sweet moments that beautifully showcased how much these two boys love each other and how they function as a family. However, all of this warmth existed within a fragile bubble, and beyond that bubble lay only agony. The events that unfolded in this volume were necessary for Gu Fei’s growth. They had to happen so that Gu Fei could mature, learn that it's okay to prioritize himself, and realize that not everything should revolve solely around family, that it can, and should, also be about him. He needed to understand that the burdens he carries can be shared with those who want to help, and that it's perfectly okay to accept support.

I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Gu Fei in the next volume fully grow into a person who finally recognizes that, despite the world’s bleakness, there are small pockets of happiness worth cherishing. I believe he will come to understand that no matter how tiny these moments seem, living life to the fullest for them makes all the struggles worthwhile. I am convinced he will have a beautifully fulfilling ending arc.

But unfortunately, the events that had to happen for Gu Fei in this volume meant that Jiang Cheng suffered greatly. My poor baby, watching him work so tirelessly throughout this volume to support Gu Fei, only for the rug to be pulled from under him at the last moment, was heartbreaking. He is so full of hope and sunshine that I cried terribly for him. The sadness, helplessness, and immense stress he endured were overwhelming, yet he never once gave up. Instead, he worked even harder to achieve his goals, which, heartbreakingly, were not even entirely about himself. That makes the pain all the more intense.

The way Jiang Cheng reacted at the end was incredibly difficult to read, and I just know that in the next volume, he will be even more hurt and filled with anger. Despite understanding why Gu Fei did what he did and recognizing that he was in an incredibly dark mental state, that does not excuse his actions. He chose the coldest, most hurtful option, and in doing so, caused Jiang Cheng even more pain. It's especially hard to heal when there’s no closure because you don't have all the details about the whole situation. That was a terrible move.

Lastly, what I most adore about this danmei is that it's about the simple, profound act of living. It explores the hardships and joys of life, portraying realistic scenarios, such as dealing with terrible parents, having to take care of oneself from a young age, and finding family in the most unexpected places. It's about love in its broadest sense, ranging from small, everyday acts to the grand, life-changing moments.

In conclusion, I genuinely hope time speeds up so that volume 6 arrives sooner, bringing with it the healing I need and the conclusion of these two precious boys’ storylines.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
' “That’s good enough for me, then. As long as you know me, I’m not going to worry about anything else.” Jiang Cheng continued pedaling forward. “If you know me, that’s enough.” '
' “Cheng-ge.”
“Hmm?” Jiang Cheng put his leg on Gu Fei’s and rubbed them together.
“Have I ever told you,” Gu Fei said, “that you are the one thing I’m proud of?” '
'“Wherever I go, I will always be able to pick you out with a single glance,” Jiang Cheng said. “You’re not like anyone else—I’ve said that before. You’re different from anyone else in the world. I know you said that I’ll meet lots of people, but no matter how many new people I meet, there will never be another Gu Fei.” '
' Gu Fei didn’t regret beginning their relationship, even if he’d known from the start that he’d have to face this situation—that he would fall into this pit of agonizing longing. He had no regrets. But it didn’t make it any less difficult to bear. '
' He wanted Jiang Cheng to enjoy himself in this relationship, to have fun with no reservations, like Wang Xu or Pan Zhi. He wanted him to act like other people their age when they were in love, where the only thing to think about was love itself. '
' I don’t have a home anymore, Gu Fei.
But it’ll be all right as long as I have you. You're family. The feeling of losing everything, of not having anything concrete within his reach—it was more than he could bear. '
I knew that this volume was going to hurt and while I approached this as blind as possible, it’s been impossible not to see the writing on the wall that has been building over the last few volumes. Despite expecting it and bracing for the pain, this volume still H U R T.
I adore the covers for Run Wild and firmly believe that they are some of the best cover art that Seven Seas has produced, but this cover especially wrecks me. The symbolism of Jiang Cheng excitedly stepping in to the sun light, looking back and pulling Gui Fei forwards, while Gui Fei is in the shadows with such a look of sadness on his face genuinely D E S T R O Y S me.
The worst bit of this volume is that I completely understand why both boys feel and think as they do. Gui Fei’s pain, frustration and loneliness is especially understandable and hit me harder than I expected this volume.
THANK GOD we know that this story will have a HEA. I cant wait for the next volume so that I can find out what happens, while simultaneously being utterly distraught that it’s over. (The fact that my to ongoing danmei series are finishing within a month of each other is going to leave a devastating void in my life)
The brightest spot in this volume was watching Jiang Cheng start to flourish among his peers and I especially love his friendships with Pan Zhi and Zhao Ke.
Brilliant. Completely devastating. This damei is fantastic and as far as I am concerned compulsory reading for anyone interested in the genre.
But after keeping Jiang Cheng company through this entire journey, despite constantly coming up with new ways to give Jiang Cheng peace of mind while he studied, he found it was Jiang Cheng who had given HIM more.
Perhaps Jiang Cheng hadn’t been through as much as he had. Perhaps those rifts and trenches hadn’t been in his way for quiet as long, but Jiang Cheng’s self-assuredness in facing any setback head-on was something Gu Fei had never possessed.
The more he saw this side of Jiang Cheng, the more dispondent Gui Fei felt.
He’d stayed at the bottom of the river for far too long, swaying aimlessly along with the current of sand and silt around him. The more he wanted to get closer to Jiang Cheng, the more clearly he could see the differences between them.
I am typing this through tears. The ending chapters were like a hammer pounding away at and breaking my heart into a million pieces. I have not been so teary over a book since the scene in Remnants of Filth when Gu Mang goes to the graves of his fallen comrades.
I knew that this is how things were going to end up but I just kept hoping it wouldn’t.
This volume really showcased how two people can love each other so much and yet things can go wrong anyways. I felt for Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei deeply in this volume. Jiang Cheng is doing everything he can to hold on and Gu Fei is just too tired to keep fighting.
It’s easy to blame Gu Fei for giving up but I don’t. He’s been put into an impossible situation by two worthless parents, one dead and the other too busy being a pick me with men to truly be a mother, he can’t turn his back on his sister.
I also thought the author did a fantastic job of portraying both heartbreak and depression at the end. Both of these characters are heartbroken and depressed but dealing with in different ways. Realistic ways, especially since they are guys of a certain age.
And finally Gu Miao. I love her so much. I feel like she and especially Gu Fei are my children that I have to protect. I want only the best for both of them. And even though this volume showed how devastating having false hope can be I hope that somehow someway they both get a happy ending because honestly they deserve it.
“If there’s hope, just hold on to it. There’s a whole lifetime to go.”
I don’t even know what to say after reading this volume. It started with so many scenes that had me giggling like a teenager, then quietly broke my heart before I even realized what was happening. One of my favorite parts was seeing Gu Fei sick and just leaning on Jiang Cheng. I never expected to see Jiang Cheng taking care of both of them like that, and I loved how their roles seemed to switch every now and then. Those scenes felt so comforting. Then there was Gu Fei being playfully salty about Jiang Cheng having had a girlfriend before. It was so adorable, especially because it came from someone who had memorized all of Jiang Cheng’s accounts and IDs. It’s such a tiny detail, but it’s also one of the sweetest things in the book. Those little moments are what make their relationship feel so real to me. I could honestly read pages of them doing nothing but talking. Whether they’re having serious conversations or saying the most nonsensical things to each other, I never get tired of it.
The closer I got to the end, the heavier everything became. The thought of them being in a long-distance relationship was already painful enough, but what really got me was seeing how life was slowly changing around them. Jiang Cheng’s world keeps getting bigger while Gu Fei remains tied to his family and the responsibilities waiting for him at home. Their relationship slowly becomes phone calls, text messages, stories about their day, and waiting for replies. It sounds so ordinary, but that’s exactly why it hurt so much. It felt real. I also realized this volume completely changed how I saw Gu Fei. I always felt that if Jiang Cheng ever wanted to break up, Gu Fei would simply let him go. I don’t know why I felt that way, but this book made me realize just how important Jiang Cheng truly is to him. My heart honestly ached reading those moments because you can feel how much they’re trying to hold on to each other even as life keeps pulling them in different directions.
I think what hurts the most is that I couldn’t blame anyone. There isn’t anyone making everything worse. Everyone is simply trapped in circumstances they can’t easily escape, and once you understand where they’re all coming from, it’s impossible not to sympathize with them. I just felt so sad for everyone. I love that this volume asks how much love can keep two people together when they’re slowly heading toward different directions. It doesn’t try to give an easy answer. By the final pages, I didn’t even know what I was feeling anymore. I just sat there with this heavy ache in my chest, wishing things could somehow work out for everyone. This volume healed and broke me at the same time. It doesn’t need huge dramatic moments to make me emotional. It lets its characters talk, love, worry, and keep moving forward one day at a time, and somehow that hurts even more because it feels so painfully human.
No notes. Incredible. Stunning. Heart wrenching. I have been waiting for this level of angst and drama from the two of them. I knew they were gonna pull a huge scene and they delivered and then some. If you're sensitive to angst I say you need to wait for book 6 to come out so you can read it right after this one because it does not go well for our boys. My god this author is so incredibly talented. These characters are just so very real and raw and painful to read about. They love each other so much and yet they are flawed and cause each other the most harm. The drama was such a slow building dark entity in the background of the entire story too so it was so painful because I was just watching things get worse and worse. Genuinely so well written. Can't wait for the conclusion in October.
With every step you took, every glance you cast, you saw marks left behind by people who had come and gone.
But often the traces you remember are the ones left by one person alone. Maybe the memory of him hovering in some corner and watching you walk away.
@sevenseas WHY WOULD YOU RELEASE THIS VOLUME DURING PRIDE MONTH ;-; /hj
run wild might just be my most favourite danmei ever, like i am madly attached to so many new characters already (zhao ke, zhao jin and xu xingzhi my beloveds !!!!!) and i just love the way wu zhe writes about jiang cheng and gu fei as individuals and also together... i adore the way they bring life to every single character while simultaneously keeping the plot really interesting and smooth.
this volume had me crying over and over because i am extremely fucking parasocial about even fictional characters :(
i totally understand both jiang cheng and gu fei and i hate how the world is so bleak and harsh towards them :( and i think only the passage of time would eventually help. also, thank god for volume 6 because imagine if the story ended here... HAHA no i'm kidding. i can't wait for volume 6 but it hurts so much because we're right at the end :( my beloved run wild, i'm going to miss you so much.
anyway, olivia wrote "the cure" about gu fei, i'm so sure.
'He wanted to throw his entire body into crying out, to do it forcefully and loudly. Perhaps a completely dedicated wailing session was the only thing that could make him feel a little better.
But it was impossible; he could only hear a raspy rustle in his throat.
How unsatisfying.
How frustrating.'
This volume was everything I wanted. The last book was the couple studying together for the big University entrance exam. This book opens and they are taking the tests. Once the tests are done, they have a whole summer to do things together and just be a couple.
It's amazing. There are no fights, no unnecessary drama, just everyday moments. Beautiful. There is tension about the coming separation and what will a long distance relationship look like. But it's handled so well.
Jiang Cheng gets to come back to life after just studying for a semester. It's lovely to see. They even do some modeling again together.
When school starts, they go together to Jiang Cheng's school, U of R in Beijing. It's a real school, I looked it up. It's a famous law school. This is where things start to get sad in this volume. Gu Fei realized he didn't belong in this world. He starts to withdraw.
The last part of the story is the next semester of college. Gu Fei is in college in his hometown. Jiang Cheng leaving really is difficult on Gu Miao, his sister and she regresses. That's difficult to watch.
Jiang Cheng came home during a holiday weekend and things are almost back to normal.
Spoilers:
After Jiang Cheng leaves, Gu Fei finally cracked. After a lifetime of having to care for his little sister alone, he cracked. He just can't take it any longer. He's missing Jiang Cheng, longing for a life outside the Steelworks and Gu Miao is the same as always, never getting better. It's so difficult to watch Gu Fei who was so strong, crack.
The book ends in the most agonizing place. Gu Fei ended it. Jiang Cheng lost his voice and gets ill. It's a horrible place to end. I need the next book now.
I have loved this story. I've known a happy ending seems unlikely in this situation, but I had hoped for one anyway. Now, I don't know what will happen. I want it to work out. I revel in their relationship. It's so easy going and tender. This story has just been so beautiful. I hope this beautiful story doesn't bite at the end. I've had a few other stories just go into terrible territory and I don't want this to be another story like that. Here's hoping.
Volume 5 is one of the quieter volumes of the series. It’s not as stressful as the other volumes, and the climax the series has been building to this entire time happened much more quietly than I thought. In a way, it’s fitting. More often than not people let go not out of anger or any other passionate emotions, but because they’re exhausted. There’s only so much a person can take before they break.
I like how this volume further highlighted the difference between Jiang Cheng and Gu Fei’s mindsets. Their conflict feels realistic rather than forced. Deep down, we knew the ending was inevitable.
Most of this volume is them missing each other, getting adjusted to not being together 24/7, eating and talking. It’s probably my least favorite volume in the series so far because 80% of it is two cheesy teenagers missing each other.
The author mainly focuses on the two as they’re each other’s entire world, which is fine, but it made me realize how codependent they are, and how I wished they both had more moments with other people (Especially Gu Fei with Fresh Out of Jail or at least Li Yan because Li Yan feels more like a convenient character for the author to use rather than an actual close friend of Gu Fei’s). Most side characters that are only there to help the main characters’ relationship, which does make the world feel a bit hollower.
For the first time in the series, I felt like the slice of life was too aggressively slice of life. I think it’s because their relationship, especially their issues is the main focus with zero other subplots. Previous volumes’ side plots (Li Baoguo, Monkey, the basketball tournament, etc) kept the slice of life plot fresh. Cheesiness in relationships isn’t my favorite, and I suppose that’s why I liked this volume less.
Regardless, I like how the author wrote the climax we’ve been building up to since volume 1. True to the slice of life genre, life changes can happen in a flash. Any day things could change, no matter how tightly you hold on to something. Part of life is realizing you can’t control everything.
I’m excited to see how this series ends. I trust the author to stick the landing.
a coisa sobre sa ye é que tá tudo bem até perceber que estamos sendo envolvidos pela tristeza das situações que não tem como controlar. é triste porque sabíamos que cedo ou tarde isso iria acontecer e ainda assim acompanhar os pensamentos do gu fei, sabendo que o jiang cheng sempre se mostrou muito otimista diante de tudo que era inevitável, foi de cortar o coração. o começo até te engana por um momento, mas tudo mudou tanto no entorno deles que eu consegui sentir muito o peso dessas mudanças e o crash out acontecendo. me dói muito muito que o jiang cheng esteja passando por isso sozinho em um lugar desconhecido e que o gu fei tenha finalmente desistido de fingir que acredita em um futuro pra si e pra eles.
Vos querés que me mate?
Ame este volumen, pasaron cosas muy tiernas y todo pero el cambio les afectó a ambos Jiang Cheng ahora se fue a la uni y Gu Fei se quedó atrás, obvio que eso iba a traer quilombo pero era algo que ambos sabían de ante mano.
Yo entendí ambas posturas en todo momento y por eso no puedo criticar nada realmente, o al menos sin dar spoilers de lo que pasa.
Lloré una banda con el último tramo y eso que ya me había spoileado antes porque soy tonta y sin querer lei la sinopsis del Vol 6, así que avisada estaba desde el volumen 3!! Por eso trate de evitar todo esto pero bueno no se puede qsy.
Yo no voy a aguantar hasta octubre así que voy a tener que hacer magia para conseguir ese último volumen con urgencia!!
