DC Super Hero Girls: High School Reunion
It’s the 10th anniversary of DC Super Hero Finals Crisis, and modern-day,grown-up Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley, Ivy, and Beast Boy havereceived invitations to the most exclusive party in town—their high schoolreunion. There are some really fun moments in this comic, but I found myself continuously asking "Who is this for?"
This is a DC Super Hero Girls book, which is obviously targeted at a relatively younger audience, not only because of its connection to the animated series, but also in its very cartoon-ish art style. It's also about a "High School Reunion," though, which implies that these characters have grown up, which could be an attempt to appeal to the audience who first watched the show in 2019, but would otherwise not be particularly appealing to the younger audience implied by the art style who wouldn't have any reason to know that the Class President normally plans the reunion, etc.
The characters themselves are supposed to be old enough to not be shocked by an invitation to a Reunion, but the timeline gets really muddy here. On the one hand, Crane is in charge of a very important institution that would require a doctorate holding director. On the other hand, Harley hasn't finished her schooling and no one seems to have anything of note to discuss with each other about the time they've been apart.
There are some fun Easter eggs here for fans, but the continuing immaturity of the cast and the timeline inconsistencies are left most of the book feeling unspecific and slightly hollow.

This book is cute fun. Despite that, it feels a bit lost in terms of audience. It's a 10 year high school reunion with characters being in their twenties, released for the 10 year anniversary of the series. I expected it to be targeting the original fans more so than new fans, but the book feels very young, even slightly younger than the series felt when I watched it. If this young audience has read the other comics, then that's fine, but it doesn't really work as a good introduction imo, and it feels too young for fans of the original, which is a bit sad. The art is great, and the series is incredibly punny, some better than others.

A cute, wholesome and colourful super-sequel to the 'DC Super Hero Girls' comics, set ten years later, for, as the title says, a 'High School Reunion'.
It is about the no-longer teenage Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Bumblebee (I don't know why Katana is on an alternate cover, she's hardly in the comic) - they are the DC Super Hero Girls - plus Beast Boy. He's very popular in this franchise, and I don't mind a bit. Not having grown up a bit since graduation and "boyhood", he has been promoted to the token guy of this superhero group; an inverse and almost subversion of the Smurfette Principle.
All of these heroes are cool and fun, and full of bad puns!
Although, 'High School Reunion' is mostly about Harley Quinn, and her insecurities as a nonpowered "burden" to her superhero team and friends, whom she'd ghosted since graduating DC superhero high school; it is her development from that. She lives with Poison Ivy, and it is heavily implied they are a couple in this franchise as well. Fantastic!
Got to appreciate that Ivy is not skinny like the other girls, too.
'DC Super Hero Girls: High School Reunion' is simple, kiddie and cartoony - aimed at a younger audience, despite its heroes being adults now - but it is an enjoyable and fresh ride to kill around a half hour of time in reading. Therein lie so many adorably, hilariously bad puns - nearly every line of dialogue contains a pun.
On a surprising note: there is an antidiscrimination and fearmongering theme running in 'High School Reunion', especially in regards to xenophobia. However, it isn't featured much, nor developed on a deeper level beyond what this light, colourful, funny-and-punny children's superhero comic could perhaps handle or get away with. Still, I appreciate its presence. It is a very important topic to bring up and teach to the youth, especially in this hellish, dystopian day and age.

A Nostalgic "Grown-Up" Adventure
This graphic novel serves as a perfect 10th-anniversary tribute to the series, reuniting the original crew—Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Harley, Ivy, and Beast Boy—now as young adults with their own responsibilities. It’s a "nice read" that manages to feel a bit more mature while remaining totally appropriate for middle-grade readers.
Key Highlights:
The Trap: The heroes are lured back to Super Hero High with invitations to an exclusive reunion, only to find they are the only ones there. It's a fun "mystery" setup that forces them to walk down memory lane to find an escape.
Harley and Ivy: True to the series' roots, the bond between Harley and Ivy is "low key" but definitely present. They are clearly "B.F.F.s" who care deeply for one another, and seeing them back together adds a sweet layer to the story.
Harley Saves the Day: While it shows off the whole team, this volume gives Harley a standout moment. Just as in previous Shea Fontana stories where her creativity is her greatest strength, Harley’s unique perspective and "madcap style" end up being the key to defeating the trap and saving her friends.

I enjoyed watching the DC Super Hero Girls cartoons which is why I wanted to check this one out. I am well outside the target demographic.
Per the indicia, this juvenile graphic novel is targeted for 8 to 12 year olds. And that might be where a slight problem creeps in. This is an audience who hasn't yet gotten through junior high, so the high school experience is still unknown. Even more, adding on a ten-year reunion puts the characters in their late twenties. For kids, that's ancient. I remember being a ten-year-old and thinking people close to thirty were super-old.
The story incorporates flashbacks to high school as Harley tries to figure out who is behind the plot and how to stop them. I would have liked to see some more variation in character behavior between the pre-grad and post-grad, to show how they have aged and changed in a decade. They all pretty much felt the same past and present. The target audience, however, likely won't notice or care.
The overall themes and message are positive ones, great lessons for young readers to learn. For long-time comic fans, there are also some nice Easter eggs in the art and dialogue. Still not sure why Beast Boy falls into the "girls" cast other than for comic relief.

It’s not a bad read, especially if you’re looking for that kind of “where are they now?” Fix.
I personally didn’t realize before, but this book s still aimed at that younger demographic. So I’m probably not the right audience anyways. I was just hoping for a little more, for the people that grew up on the show to see the characters grow up as well,

Let me start by absolutely gushing about how much I adored this incarnation of the DC Superbook Hero girls. This graphic novel picks up 10 years after our heroes have graduated and right away, it’s great to see what they’ve been up to. There is focus on Harley Quinn and her doubts the things she’s accomplished when compared with her peers. When they’re all invited back for a reunion they have to team up and solve the mystery of who is seeking revenge. It felt exactly like a movie set in this continuity as I could hear all the character’s voices in my head. It was also incredibly emotionally moving as a I really grew to love these characters while we had them. If this is the last we see, it was an amazing ending but I hope we see them again.

Slow start but superb finish!
Harley saved the day for me. Brought it all home, in essence. The artwork was really good but here character was solid and grounded all the others. Not to mention, the storyline shift to her not feeling as if she fit in with the other supes was really good.
Overall, I enjoyed it. Thanks to NetGalley for the gifted copy.
