La historia mezcla romance, esperanza y misterio, con el estilo aventurero característico de Verne.

En esta obra, Verne retoma al personaje Robur, el ingeniero visionario de Robur el conquistador. Robur reaparece como el misterioso “Dueño del mundo”, al mando de una máquina prodigiosa llamada El Terror, capaz de desplazarse por tierra, mar y aire. La novela explora los límites del poder tecnológico y la ambición humana, con tintes de ciencia ficción y crítica social.
