This was the most fascinating fairytale! I’ve never read anything like it and I’ve read quite literally, hundreds of fairytale retellings. Princess Katerina cannot die, unless her curse kills her. If she falls in love, scars will take over her body and eventually kill her. But on the flip side, as a side effect of the curse of sorts, nothing else aside from falling in love can kill her.
Due to the nature of her curse, she has never seen another man aside from her father. She is secluded in her palace for her safety, and all guards and manservants must wear masks. She is never allowed to leave the palace, and must quarantine in her quarters if the palace ever has visitors. No royal portraits, no pictures in books, she quite literally has not seen another man aside from the king.
Is that not the coolest concept? I’ve read a lot of fairytales and have not run across one with a concept this original!
Despite her curse, Katerina is forced to compete in a bridal competition for the Prince of the Ever Empire, the son of the Great King who rules over all twelve kingdoms. The royalty system is a bit different, as each of the twelve kingdoms has their king and queen, but the Great King is over them all. As a princess of one of the twelve kingdoms, Katerina has no choice but to compete in these bridal trials for the prince’s hand, all while trying to keep her curse a secret.
This is probably some of the best worldbuilding I’ve ever read. There is so much creativity here that you don’t generally see in fairytales. Flying horses to carry carriages, even the whole Empire hierarchy, and how each kingdom is named after a flower and assigned a royal color based on their fairy’s flower. Each princess even has a different fairy gift, an enchanted object gifted by their kingdom’s fairy. It is expertly planned, incredibly creative, and has better worldbuilding than most of the fairytales I read. It also played homage to the twelve dancing princesses fairytale perfectly (and the Barbie movie that we all love iykyk).
The worldbuilding is just too good for this not to be a continued series. Princess Ariella’s story is next, I’m predicting, but Princess June is a rarely mentioned underdog that I hope gets her time in the spotlight soon (yes I mainly like her because her kingdom’s color is pink lol but still). I’m hoping we will get a Snow White retelling for her, as she fits that vibe! And the whole poison king arc on the other half of the continent is a story in itself. There are a lot more stories to tell in this world!
