Sadie Malone’s holiday season has gone from bad to worse. On Thanksgiving, she was kidnapped by aliens. By Christmas Eve, she was stuck on some weird planet, with zero holiday cheer. If she wants to make it back to Ohio in time for New Year's, she’s gonna need a plan.
Step Get a spaceship. Step Find a pilot. Step Avoid all the monsters hunting her.
Luckily, there’s a giant, four-armed alien who might be able to help. Xane is grumpy and suspicious, but he’s also protective, strangely hot, and able to rip off people’s legs when they’re mean. Sadie’s thrilled to buy him at the creepy alien auction and free him from creepy alien captivity. She’s less thrilled to learn that she’s the only woman in this part of the universe. And that no one here’s ever heard of a Christmas carol. …Oh, and that she and Xane somehow got married.
M/F 50,000+ words Alien romance Set at Christmastime This is a standalone book with a HEA
3.5 stars rounded down and another fun BR with Elizabeth! We’ve also agreed on our last few BRs which is interesting.
Chaotic but fun and sweet. Some of the chaos eventually bugged me, but I loved the H and the ending was very satisfying. Definitely has some of the “normal” sci-fi feel with an alien slave market and a wrecked spaceship, and loads of alien cultural differences. But make a good bit of all that rompy. The Christmas theming and the world-building both had some flaws so I recommend trying to lean into the fluff and just turn off your brain (even if I had a hard time doing so myself in places).
Written in third person, dual POV. No ow drama, no real om drama though this is Mars needs women trope so anyone would gladly (and violently) take the h away from the H. The h seemed experienced and the H was effectively inexperienced, with some degree of having done something with robots that’s not gone into detail.
Some tropes/themes: ☆ Alien MMC x human FMC ☆ Both taken with the intention of selling them off ☆ FMC loves Christmas ☆ Cultural and language translation challenges ☆ Insta feels ☆ She’s the only female on the whole planet ☆ He reluctantly supports her crazy plans ☆ His alien species is known for fighting ☆ She’s sunshine chaos ☆ Alien marriage ☆ She saved him x he would do anything for her ☆ Some glossed over darker moments (alien slavery, threats of SA, killing the bad guys)
Sadie (h) opens the story at an alien slave market where she’s trying to purchase a pilot who can get her home. She was abducted and killed her captors (it takes a little bit to find out how and it’s both supremely odd and also hilarious). Instead of bidding on a pilot, Sadie bids on a scary-ass guy who’d otherwise be headed for some mines because she’s got good instincts and his eyes are beautiful. Right away, you get a sense of how Sadie’s going to blithely do what she wants throughout the story and not necessarily what the smarter action would be. It makes for funny scenarios and it always works out for her, but the attitude eventually wore on me.
Xane (H) is the alien that Sadie purchases and he’s flabbergasted over what she’s doing. Women are rare and she’s just trotting around putting herself in danger. I adored him and his very linear and stoic thought processes, esp in contrast to Sadie. Xane’s people aren’t touchy-feely, however Sadie inspires quite the feelings in him, including concern over her approach to their situation. But they do work together as a team, even when Sadie’s running the show and Xane’s there to try and pick up the pieces. It gets cuter when they end up married to each other because of an alien custom that Sadie didn’t fully understand, but Xane’s not letting her wriggle out of.
It is a slow burn with only two spicy scenes, that are good. Most of the book is them trying to work out what needs to happen so they can fly their spaceship the hell off the awful planet they’re currently stuck on. Sadie harping on Christmas was a lot at times, particularly in the face of none of the aliens around her having any idea what she was going on about. Xane’s backstory had a puzzling aspect to it, but I also felt for him with his preferences not conforming to what his people were known for. The side characters are almost entirely crappy until the very end.
The chaos ramps up at the climax and there’s a genuinely scary moment where you wonder how they’ll overcome the odds. I had an idea of what would bail them out and was pleased for it to actually fall out the way I thought. Everything is wrapped up in a neat bow with Sadie and Xane in love, safe, and thriving. Also, she’s wealthy and royalty by the end so abduction was a huge upgrade for her. Cassandra Gannon always has a great author’s note and it was interesting to see some of her process for this book. I don’t think this was as cohesive as some of her others, though her books are always zany and bop around. Not my favorite but it made for an entertaining read that had some shining moments mixed with the less stellar ones. Also read Elizabeth's review here cause she makes some excellent points about some of the themes.
TLDR: Frothy typical alien romance with a great hero and poor worldbuilding. If you're looking for brainless fun, it's okay, but not the best of the genre.
Longer review: Cassandra Gannon has some wonderful, if unhinged, stories in her series "A Kinda Fairytale". She's not the first crossover from fantasy to alien romance that tries to go over the top but fails (I'm looking at you, Kimberly Lemming). I was hoping for something out of the ordinary, considering the author's way of subverting fairytale tropes, but I got some of the tropes I hate most in alien romance.
Look, she's not perfect in the "A Kinda Fairytale" series either. That first book with Cinderella having "relations" with her mice/rats? Ugh. So disturbing. But, at least that was original.
Sadie is a young woman who was kidnapped from her job about a month before Christmas. They were already wearing ugly Christmas sweaters, which she's into. She's pretty obsessed with Christmas in a superficial way, meaning she loves the decorations and the presents. She doesn't really have any family left to miss her. We meet her when she has already escaped from her captors and she's looking for a nice slave to buy to help her get back home. Yes she's against slavery, but she bids for our hero because of his "nice eyes".
Xane is a grumpy (for good reason) fighter who ended up as a slave after some things went wrong with a mercenary job. He's befuddled when Sadie buys him and doesn't adequately protect herself from him or from the world in general.
What I liked. Xane. He's immediately taken with Sadie and puzzled by her brazen behavior to just do whatever she wants to get what she needs. She's bumbled along and found her way and he tries to fight it at the beginning, but ends up just being swept up in her orbit. He's adorable and adores her. I love a "he falls first" story. He's pretty willing to do whatever it takes to make her happy.
What I struggled with. Sadie and the plot in general. Sadie is this "typical" white American women we see so often in alien romance. She is able to bumble through some crazily unsafe situations and has no thought to other cultures and practices. The plot is not original and the author does no work to give the worldbuilding some sense. She's not the only author to use the trope "all of our women are dead/women are rare", but she doesn't explain why there aren't women outside of earth.
I've always been annoyed with the the trope that "women are precious because they are rare". It's so misogynistic and I can't understand why women authors include this crap. But also include SO MANY THREATS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. We're told "women get to choose cause women are rare" but also, Sadie is threatened with rape constantly, including a pretty horrific threat of being passed around by a group of 100+ males.
I'm not a fan of worlds where sexual violence and slavery are mainstream. And in this author's story, these issues barely blip the radar. Yes, Sadie says "slavery is bad" but why do we need this in the world building? There were so many other ways to put her in danger without including slavery or threats of sexual violence.
I wanted to enjoy the caper aspect of this story. There are a lot of other references in this book to Ocean's 11 or other caper stories, but mostly Sadie just pulls things out her ass and they work. It made her seem very Mary Sue, in that she can have no thought to consequences and still get her way. She even decorates her Christmas tree with important things (like ancient maps and vital pieces of the ship) and doesn't care when she's told. She's more desperate for Christmas decorations than for life-giving actions. But by the end, she is safe and rescued, stumbles into becoming very rich, and has a husband who adores her.
This book has kidnapping, slave trade, "women are rare", "you smell good therefore we must get together", clueless white American women in space, and some gendered stereotypes. It also has internalized fatphobia, in that Sadie offers to lose weight to make herself beautiful for Xane. But... at the end of the day, we get a frothy book that is totally fine and pretty mid in the alien romance genre. This could have been written by anyone and doesn't stand out at all.
Safety deets - virgin hero - heroine has experience but hasn't been with anyone for several months - we get to see their HEA at the end - no protection or talk about pregnancy/disease during sexy times - threats of sexual violence (but thankfully, nothing happens)
I needed this. Seriously. There is something about Cassandra Gannon’s books that just do it for me. They are so chaotically entertaining that they really give me the genuine falling into another world type of reading experience.
TBH with y’all I don’t even know how to begin writing a review for this. All I can say is if you like an unhinged fmc who is coping with a traumatic experience by obsessing over Christmas, a mmc who is a goner from one look, and a whole lot of ridiculous plot points that model famous movies, I think you’ll enjoy this.
This was a riot. It provided exactly what was advertised, with the perfect amount of fluffy, sweet, sincere, and sexy! A great, silly & low-stakes romance read.
****
(I deducted one star because of the dialogue punctuation. I never deduct stars for a typo here and there, but this was simply incorrect, all throughout, and it did pull me a little out of the experience. Hopefully the author can study up on dialogue punctuation or hire a copy editor for future books.)
cassandra gannon truly has a way of creating a world and inviting you in. just like most of her other books, i enjoyed this sooo much. it was crazy and silly and strange, and i had to tell myself to just stop trying to make it all make sense. it was highly entertaining.
it was also very OTT american at times... only an american would move to another planet, light-years away from Earth, inhabited by a species that's entirely different to humans and with a different cultural background....... and then introduce them to americanized traditions and holidays with christian origins, that make no sense outside of their very specific contexts. meanwhile that same american ignorantly destroys ancient alien maps with, presumably, enormous cultural and historical value. and doesn't even apologize 🙈 i admit, i had to take some deep breaths through that.
but fine!!! im not here to be sensible. im here to have fun, and this was definitely fun.
though, not sure whether it's a CG book that im gonna end up rereading 🤔 it bothered me that a lot of the banter between the H and h was made up of the heroine referencing human things that the hero didn't understand. i like banter and conversations where the characters know what each other are talking about. otherwise it's a lot of "die hard is a christmas movie, amirite?" followed by "huh??", over and over.

Well this was cute as hell. The fmcs mispronounced names and races cracked me up. One question I have about four-armed aliens is: what do they call their hands? Left upper, left lower, etc? And then do they have a dominant hand out of the four, or a dominant side of their body and therefore are right handsded?
quick, fun and absolutely ridiculous - a classic cassandra gannon. the characters are quirky, the romance is sexy and the plot is all over the place, and i enjoyed every second of it. i would definitely like to see more from this world (hathgarr in particular!).
The Alien Who Saved Christmas is an excellent Sci-fi story with a holiday twist. Sadie is sweet and naïve. She is set on saving and protecting the giant alien who is being sold at auction, the alien who is so fearsome that everyone else is afraid of him. I love the trope of sweet person trying to protect the vicious character. Xane does not understand Sadie's obsession with this holiday called Christmas but he's willing to do anything to keep her happy and safe.
These two characters were adorable. There's a lot of easy solutions to terrible problems with the sort-of explanation that it's Christmas magic helping these two along. I loved that, this was fluffy and sweet, not a hard-core story.
This story has better proofreading than previous stories by this author, so I was pleased.
Cassandra always writes such fun books, and this one definitely lived up to that. Sadie is stuck on an alien planet after being abducted and finds herself purchasing Xane in order to free him from working in the mines. They end up married after a misunderstanding on Sadie’s part.
Sadie is eternally cheerful and optimistic while Xane is the complete opposite. I loved that he was so taken with Sadie though, and put up with all her shenanigans. Sadie being convinced that Xane was sick and needed her protection after being drugged, despite evidence to the contrary cracked me up. There are heartwarming elements to the story as well, Xane learning that caring for someone is actually a good thing was wonderful. The book is under 300 pages so it goes pretty quick, and I would absolutely recommend it.
This is the best alien-Christmas-romance book I have ever read.
On Thanksgiving, Sadie is abducted by aliens. By Christmas eve, her captors are dead (thanks to her hand sanitizer, lol), and she finds herself stranded on a strange planet with a broken ship and no knowledge on how to fix it, let alone fly it back to her home in Toledo, Ohio in time for Christmas. Fortunately for her, she scores big at an alien slave auction and ends up with Xane, a big, sexy alien with four arms and LOTS of muscles. Can the two work together and repair the ship, find a pilot, escape the planet, AND kiss under the mistletoe?
This was so! much! FUN! It is no secret that I am the world's biggest Cassandra Gannon fan, and this book was just more proof to myself that she is my queen. Look how stupid this is! It's PERFECT!
I adoreeeeee Sadie, she is my girl. I love how funny and upbeat she is, and her dedication to celebrating the holidays on a fucked up desert planet surrounded by hostiles is very admirable. Xane of course is the more serious, grumpy one of the pair, but he is *immediately* head over heels for her and it is adorable and I love him so much and he is so ride or die. It is soooo funny seeing his reactions to the strange human tradition that is "Christmas".
There's not much to say here, this is just really funny and cute little Christmas jaunt, but it is a REALLY well executed one that I absolutely loved.
“Too bad those duplicitous little shits endangered Sadie.” This has to be one of the best lines from her book. I really liked this book. I loved Xane and Sadie and how even with communication issues they made it work. To watch him develop feelings and understand them was sweet, and to watch my girl be a total badass, even better. Another great book by Cassandra.
Now Cassandra if you read this… I want Destiny from the Time House…. NOW. Please!!! Please!!! PLEASE!!!!!
as usual, i looooove cassandra gannon's works. this was a really cute read, short and sweet; lowkey makes me want my own four armed alien cause he was such a simmpppp for herr ugh. need a guy like that. i love cassandra's ability to create characters that are so compatible, like the banter is there the yearning is there the DESPERATION UGH!! this doesnt hit the same as untrue love or cowboy from the future or scarecrow buttt i thuoght it was still good. i usually do, i love all her works
This book is delightful. It’s silly, festive, and just so much fun. I had to work hard to put it down to keep up with the reading schedule because I had such a wonderful time. There were several moments that I literally laughed out loud, and the romance storyline was perfect, honestly. No doubt that this will be a yearly re-read for me, and I will be forcing my romance-novel-averse girlfriend to listen to me read this to her next year.
This was fun and different. Spacemas Carols, translucent aliens, duckling aliens, mailbox aliens, adult orphans in space, heroic 4 armed aliens…it has something for everyone. Spicy if you want it to be-if not skip ahead. Ocean’s 11 vibes with a touching shout out to the Xenomorph Queen at the end of the story. It is just the diverse people.
This book stands out in a crowd of alien abduction romances with its perfect pacing, fun characters, and explosive chemistry between the main characters. It presents the Earthling-in-space with some twists and unique perspectives on the genre. 12/10 highly recommend (and the rest of her books if you haven't read those yet).
Cassandra G.’s writing never fails to cheer me up, crack me up, and somehow also bring a dorky tear to my eye. Her books are SO much fun, I look forward to every one! I adore the Gannon sisters and their quirky, lovely books. Truly hope they keep writing forever!
This book was so funny that by 30% I was looking up the author’s backlog and adding them to my TBR. I was cackling and singing out the chapter songs to my husband (while getting judged for my reading choices I’m sure). Sadie and Xane were hilarious. I would love to see more with Xane and his brother. Their interactions were very intriguing and sweet.
And the crowd goes wild! What a fun, bananas, chaotic story. Totally recommend this if you are craving a romance about a regular human who loves Christmas and her four armed alien man who finds her to be a lunatic (which I always am).
It only misses out on the 5 star treatment because the FMC is kind of annoyingly dim. She just marches forward with misplaced enthusiasm and a whole lot of luck. Luckily, the rest of the story makes up for it.
Funny and spicy and chock full of alien love! An alien romance is a bit of a thematic departure for this author, but she wrote it with her trademark sense of humor and high yearning romance. This is perfect if you're looking for something quick and fun. The Christmas theme was a hoot!
Loved every wacky minute of this! So much fun and never was quite sure where it was going! Would love to read a sequel someday! I think their planet might need a queen next 😉 Thank you Ms Gannon, once again for an adventure to remember!
Truly delightful, and seems to have reignited my love of reading again after an interminable amount of time feeling very ambivalent about books, for which I’m very grateful. The mix of aliens, Christmas and romance was a sweet spot and I enjoyed Sadie and Xane’s story very much.
This story was light hearted and cute. She rescued him from slavery. Women are extremely rare. He is shocked she chooses him to marry. Now he basically does anything she wants to make her happy.
