If you’re looking for something to add to your TBR this spooky season, Chosen: A Horror Anthology is a standout choice.

I’ll admit, I was initially hesitant to request a copy since horror anthologies aren’t usually what I gravitate toward. However, I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone, because this collection completely surprised me. Each story offers a unique sense of unease, with suspense and atmosphere that kept me turning the pages late into the night.

One of my favorites was “Honor Thy Mother” by J.M. Clark. From the very first page, it delivered an unsettling intensity that never let up. The question of whether Cora truly knows best lingered long after I finished.

Another standout was “Captain’s Log” by Sarah Wilson Gregory. This story had me constantly guessing, wondering what would unfold next. The claustrophobic setting of a ship at sea, paired with the slow unraveling of the crew’s experiences, created a chilling sense of dread as events spiraled out of control.

Chosen: A Horror Anthology releases on October 1, 2025, and will be available on Kindle for $6.99. For readers seeking spine-tingling tales to set the mood for spooky season, this collection is well worth picking up.

A great collection of interesting short stories. While some couldn’t quite get the “world building” or immersion I usually look for, others did a great job pulling me in right away. Sweet, Sweethaven, Shadow of the Aal, and the Midnight Radio are three that could easily build into longer stories.

I also enjoyed the different writing approaches. Captain’s Log is an interesting approach, using a captain’s log/perspective. FACE took a more metaphorical approach to the body snatcher theme.

Will be buying a copy to keep in my library. Looking forward to future publications by this group.

What a collection of spooky tales!

It oddly brought me back to when I was a kid and my friends and I would tell each other scary stories while camping out in our barn during sleepovers.

Honor Thy Mother was fairly predictable but the descriptions made the entire thing eerie. It gave that cringy disturbed factor a story like that has to have. I truly hope my children don’t love me to that extent 😂

Honeybones gave me a whirl at the end! He and his wife certainly had issues, and issues like they clearly had don’t ever mix well with an appetite like he has. Oof!

The Midnight Radio was great and the only way I can describe my reaction to it is that it almost gave me a Twilight Zone vibe to it!

CHOSEN is a collection of short horror stories that I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of. I have not even finished yet but have not been able to put it down! Grab your copy and strap in for this horror anthology just in time for spooky season!

Reviews of the stories I have already completed

J.M. Clark’s Honor Thy Mother is a hair-raising short story about Cora, an overly devoted daughter caring for her ailing mother. The story gave me goosebumps and made me gag — an unsettling portrait of love taken too far. I can only hope this kind of devotion from my children never finds me. This story had me hooked!

Hannah Gibbs’s Bortle Scale One is an eerie, unsettling story. All I can say is this: you can take the boys out of the evil forest, but you can’t take the evil forest out of the boys. It’s always watching. Thud. Squelch. Thud. Squelch. Thud. Squelch.

Logan Sroufe’s Honeybones is a dark, twisted tale about an awful man and his delicious wife. Need I say more

Welcome to the Family by Noah Hoffman
From the first page, the atmosphere is thick with dread, and the tension only escalates. The horror is visceral, at times nauseating, making your stomach churn in the best (or worst) way possible. But what really sets this story apart is the unexpected twist at the end.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read anything in the horror genre, and Chosen felt like the perfect reintroduction. This anthology is full of eerie, chilling stories.

The opening story, “Honor Thy Mother” by J.M. Clark, immediately gave me Norman Bates vibes in the best way. It was twisted and little disturbing in a way that lingered, and it definitely set the tone for what was to come.

But my favorite story in the collection was “The Midnight Radio” by Hannah Gibbs. The idea of a mysterious radio that turns on at midnight and predicts the future in vague, unsettling riddles? I was hooked from the very beginning. It was atmospheric, original, and genuinely gave me chills.

This anthology is a solid pick for anyone wanting short, bite-sized horror stories with variety. It’s also a great starting point if you’re just getting your feet wet in the genre again like I am. I appreciated the range of tones and ideas, and a few stories left me thinking long after I finished them.

Highly recommend for horror fans or readers who want a creepy, intriguing collection to keep the lights on for.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

💀💀💀💀💀

Chosen is an absolutely gripping horror anthology that delivers chills, atmosphere, and unforgettable stories. Each author brings a distinct voice, yet the collection flows seamlessly, keeping you hooked from beginning to end. The characters feel vivid and real, and the tension builds in ways that left me both unsettled and eager to keep turning the pages.

If I had to offer one small piece of feedback, it would be that at times the background and scene descriptions ran a little long. While beautifully written and atmospheric, a few moments might have hit harder with slightly tighter pacing. That said, this hardly takes away from the overall experience—the detail also adds to the immersive, haunting quality of the stories.

Overall, Chosen is a chilling, well-crafted anthology that any horror fan should add to their collection. Dark, imaginative, and deeply unsettling in the best way. Highly recommended!

Thanks again for letting me be apart of this amazing arc journey.

This was a great read. Two of the stories I didn’t click with and the last one was a bit jumbled but overall I enjoyed it.

Definitely has some hidden meanings in the stories when it comes to life choices! Some of my faves were:

With “Honor Thy Mother” the takeaway I got from that is to always check on your loved ones. More than just a phone call. Mental health matters, especially death PTSD.

“Bortle Scale One”. Note to self: don’t travel/hike into an unknown nature train at night. You never know what awaits you…or you may never escape.

“Welcome to the Family” was definitely intriguing. Walkers… altered and improved walkers. Ghosts they call them. An odd way of living in a new reality of undead. Be careful to not become apart of this reality.

“Captain’s Log” Keep ya friends close but your enemies closer. Always stay 4 steps ahead.

“Shadow of the Aal” No matter how much you prepare, sometimes you still can’t avoid the inevitable. And never go into a diner that just seconds ago looked abandoned!

Glad to have read this for my spooky reads this month! Thank you J.M. Clark for the opportunity to read this as an ARC! This book will be available on October 1,2025!

This anthology is the perfect addition to your spooky season lineup. While I devoured it in just a couple of days, it’s also the kind of collection you can savor slowly all through October. Between its pages, a group of talented authors deliver twisted, chilling tales that will leave you questioning your own sanity Choosing favorites wasn’t easy, but two stories in particular gave me chills:
“Honor Thy Mother” by J.M. Clark – Creepy from the very first page. Even when I thought I knew where it was headed, the unsettling atmosphere never let up.
“Captain’s Log” by Sarah Wilson Gregory – A story that hooked me right away, making me care for a specific character while keeping me on edge.

This anthology truly has something for every horror fan. I came away with new authors to follow and a few extra reasons to glance over my shoulder. 👀

I was given the opportunity to read this book through an Arc and wanted to say that I have only read the 1st 3 stories so far. however. since the book is being released i wanted to give my opinion so far. I think the stories so far are different and kept me engaged. I like the idea of having an anthology book and reading a new short story before bed every night. I am a thriller/ horror lover at this time I wouldn't say any of the 3 stories have scared me and I was able to predict the 1st story almost immediately but that does not mean its not a good story. I would recommend picking up this book as a fun bed time story book you can keep on your night stand. I look forward to reading the rest and giving my final review.

Chosen is a delicious anthology of horror stories by a diverse group of authors with vastly different styles and approaches to storytelling. A very quick and satisfying read, this book will leave you feeling full, inspired, and maybe leave the faintest chill on the nape of your neck, the kind that makes you look one more time around that corner before you lay down to sleep. I am confident that you’ll find a style you know and love in it and come away with an appreciation, maybe even a taste, for a style you never knew you loved. This is anthology done very well. Explore the breadth and depth of the horror genre in about three hundred pages. Pick up this book. You won’t regret it.

I received an advanced copy in exchange for an
honest review

Spooky season is right the corner and this Anthology is perfect. This was my first time reading a horror anthology but it was perfect for my first dip into reading horror.

The stories are unnerving but they also suck you in. I enjoyed how they make you think and pay attention to the small details. I loved how the first story sucked me in Honor Thy Mother by J.M. Clark. Reading this and getting the uneasy feeling that Cora’s mother is already dead and then realizing when the story ends that it’s up to you to decide if she is or not is unsettling because in the back of your mind you knew from the moment Cora described the smell of the house at the beginning that she is dead.

This is a collection of short stories written by thirteen members of a writing group. Although I'm not a fan of short story collections, this was a lot of fun because it was all different authors. If you run into a story you aren't enjoying, it is just a couple of pages to get to a different author. The three that I enjoyed the most were Welcome to the Family (Hoffmann), Captain's Log (Sykes), and Shadow of the Aal (Namaky). This was an Advance Review Copy, but I plan on buying a paper copy at a local bookstore. A 4/5 rating, for me, is a book I would recommend.

I was very excited to grab this as an ARC, thank you! The Chosen Anthology is a collection of short stories/novellas with delightfully creepy and haunting themes! Definitely not one for the kiddos, adult horror and very unsettling scenarios make up this diverse collection. One of my favorite stories in this book reminds me of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gillman, which is an iconic story of madness. I really enjoyed reading this partly because it reminded me of reading those collections of spooky short stories as a kid! Overall a very fun read and absolutely recommend!

Thank you to the writers’ group/publisher for the ARC. When I was a kid, I read and re-read Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, along with all of its sequels. This anthology gives the same vibes, though decidedly not for younger audiences. The stories are creepy and unsettling and stay with you long after you’ve put the book down—just what you’d want from a horror anthology.

I loved this book. While all the stories aren’t in your face scary they are psychologically scary. Grab a glass of wine, a cozy blanket and get comfortable on the couch, then settle in for a wild ride.

A stellar collection of short stories from a group of very talented writers. There’s something here to for everyone from horror to fantasy. Each story feels like a deep dive into piece of something much larger and they all work together to keep the thrill and suspense moving. Highly recommend for those who are tight on reading time or enjoy sampling authors they may be unfamiliar with. You will definitely find some new writers to follow after reading.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Overall it’s a great collection of short stories. The second third of the stories in particular caught my interest and kept me engaged to the end. The stories struck a good balance of horror that gives you chills while reading but doesn’t keep you awake at night, which was perfect for me, though I would include a gore warning on quite a few of the stories. Good Halloween gift read for adults!
