When a body – washed, shaved, and posed – is found in a nearby forest, Cora is trusted to lead her first investigation. As she gathers her team and looks into the murder – the first in a string of brutal killings by a damaged and depraved predator – Cora is tested to the limit and taken to the very edge of her sanity.

No one is safe. Drawn into the vortex of the killer’s twisted psyche, Cora will face impossible choices as she races against time and fights to save those she loves the most. Born with Talipes, a condition that altered the development of his feet in the womb, Christian frequently navigated the corridors of hospitals throughout his childhood. Amidst those challenging and solitary years, he found solace and joy in the pages of books, kindling a lifelong passion for reading.

From A Series of Unfortunate Events to Artemis Fowl, Tintin to His Dark Materials, Christian devoured any literature he could get his hands on. Immersing himself in the unfathomably beautiful world of fiction was the perfect escape from the painful reality he was living in. Without the support of his amazing family and books, Christian would have struggled weathering the storm.

At nine years old, when Christian first showed an interest in storytelling, his parents gifted him a typewriter, and that's when his passion for writing truly flourished. He was captivated by crafting tales of vampires, ghosts, and ghouls, drawing inspiration from the chilling adventures in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series. The excitement and fear that horror writing evoked in him was something Christian deeply cherished.

Christian's journey in creative writing began at Portsmouth University, where he explored a diverse array of genres and writing styles. This experience pushed him out of his comfort zone, allowing him to dabble in everything from poetry and fan fiction to fairy tales, romance, erotica, horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and magical realism. After earning his degree, Christian was fortunate to receive a scholarship for a Creative Writing Master's programme. His thesis project was a novella in the young adult fantasy genre, featuring telekinetic orphaned twins. Despite the positive feedback, Christian realized that this genre wasn't the right fit for me, so he pivoted to a genre where he felt more at home: Crime Fiction.

Writing The Mannequins was a four-year journey where Christian invested his utmost effort and passion. It marks the culmination of over ten years of honing his craft until he found the genre that truly resonated with him. Christian’s aspiration is that readers will derive immense pleasure from this novel, even if it's just a fraction of the joy he experienced in creating it. Presently, Christian is writing the sequel.

Christian currently lives in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, with his wife and son. He works as a Further Education teacher, specializing in English and Creative Writing.

C. Toms-Arbel’s The Mannequins is a gripping debut that masterfully intertwines the chilling elements of psychological thriller with the vivid storytelling akin to beloved TV series like Hannibal and movies such as House of Wax and Angles and Demons. From the moment I delved into its pages, I was drawn into a world where beautifully preserved and staged dead bodies serve as the backdrop for an intricate exploration of morality, trauma, and the haunting nature of guilt.

The character development in this novel is nothing short of exceptional. Cora Steele, the protagonist, emerges as a deeply relatable and compelling figure. The way Toms-Arbel crafts her journey—especially the several layers of guilt and responsibility she carries after a high-stakes case—will resonate with me for a long while I’m sure. It's as if I’ve been binge-watching this story unfold, and the depth of each character's backstory makes them feel like old friends.

The writing style is immersive and richly detailed, creating an atmosphere that pulls you into the heart of Shropshire's chilling mystery with a gripping intensity. The tension is palpable, as each twist and turn keeps you on edge and constantly trying to guess what comes next. The juxtaposition of trauma with moments of tenderness and emotional vulnerability adds a depth that is rare in debut novels. The emotional rollercoaster—from despair to hope—keeps you invested, making it difficult to put the book down.

What truly sets The Mannequins apart is its ability to balance horror with a deep sense of humanity. The blend of suspense and emotional engagement is handled with brilliance, really allowing me to feel every ounce of Cora’s struggles and triumphs. The story examines not just the external conflict of a serial investigation, but also the internal battles faced by those affected by violence and loss.

The narrative’s pacing is expertly crafted, building momentum towards a climax that is both satisfying and thought-provoking. As the bodies pile up, so do the stakes, forcing Cora to confront her limitations as a detective and a person. You will be left questioning the very nature of justice and the price one pays for survival.

The Mannequins is a phenomenal debut that deserves recognition and a sequel. It leaves you clamoring for more of Cora Steele’s adventures as she navigates the dark corners of human nature and the horrors that lie within small towns. Toms-Arbel has laid the foundation for a captivating series that I'm eager to follow. This novel is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of mystery, emotional depth, and horror, and it showcases the promising talent of a writer sure to become a household name.

The Mannequins is a chilling mix of horror, murder, and psychological thriller – definitely not for the faint-hearted. I devoured it in one sitting and found myself completely pulled into the unsettling atmosphere. The author has a rare ability to make settings feel alive – the rundown council flat was described so vividly I could almost smell the damp, the desperation, and the anxiety seeping from its walls.

"The polyester sofa is cracked and crinkled like the creases on an old man's forehead."

The characters are equally haunting. I felt for the boy at the heart of the story, vulnerable yet carrying an edge that made me suspect he wouldn’t remain innocent for long. That tension – between empathy and dread – kept me turning the pages faster than I expected.

What impressed me most was how the horror wasn’t only in the gore, but in the slow psychological unravelling. It crawled under my skin and stayed there. By the time I reached the end, I wasn’t sure whether to close the book or check under my bed first. If you’re looking for grit, gore, and disturbing layers of psychological horror, this book is for you. It lingers long after you’ve read the last page.

This was probably my most anticipated read of the year & I knew it would be amazing. I was not disappointed. This had everything I could have asked for, I was gripped from the start. The descriptive language used is perfect, I was really able to picture events in detail (some made me feel uneasy, thanks for that)

The prologue just made me feel so sad for him & god kids can be so cruel. Every time I read about his childhood, especially his wicked mother my heart hurt or I just felt completely angry moreso because it’s such a real topic and so many children go through things like this. Obviously not all end up as killers.

THE END OF CHAPTER 5…. If it was a physical book I’d of thrown it because THAT. FUCKING. MUM 🤬 I spent most of the book hating her & honestly I still don’t like her but my heart hurt for her as well. She was a product of her environment just as she made her son into one. Tragic, how some life cycles continue.

Jacob, that poor boy didn’t stand a chance in life.
Saying that I do not condone his actions & I’m definitely not justifying them.

DI Steele, I loved her. She was such a strong and independent FMC, she is also fiercely loyal. I loved her character development throughout the book & being able to see her more vulnerable side was the icing on the cake.

This is a book that grips you 360 degrees! The writing, the character development, and the atmosphere were all superbly executed.

This read is a darkly psychological thriller that offers a unique perspective in that it follows the emotional, conflicted, and twisted personal journey of what makes the killer develop their terrifying persona and psyche.

This read will effect you to your very soul, and will, at times, have you questioning your beliefs when it comes to how you believe justice should be carried out for not only the worst killers, but those that influenced how they ultimately became someone who could carry out such monstrous acts.

The Mannequins was a truly refreshing take on the psychological thriller genre in that it follows the process of becoming the killer, as opposed to the detection process.

For a debut novel, C. Toms-Arbel took my breath away at every turn, twist, revelation, and conclusion and kept me at the edge of my seat and up to well past my bedtime.

I really look forward to future releases and will be at the front of the queue to read them.

Pick this up - you absolutely will not be disappointed, and I'm sure you will discover a new favourite author.

I would like to sincerely thank C. Toms-Arbel for granting me an arc of The Mannequins. All opinions and views expressed within this review are of my own free will and volition. I have not been promised any form of compensation by either the author or publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The Mannequins had me hooked from start to finish.
It was a fantastically written psychological thriller and kept me wanting to read more.
I could feel myself being transported in to the story as if seeing everything through the characters eyes.

You can see the work that has gone in to writing this book the author has clearly done his research and it was refreshing to read a Uk based crime/thriller fiction book that didn’t Americanise everything terminology wise.

The author touches on some very sensitive topics but handles them extremely well never down playing or romanticising them.

The graphic parts of this book all work for the story and aren’t just thrown in for shock value.

There is a lot of character development in this book and even the side characters had depth and purpose for being included within the story.
I enjoyed reading the back story of the killer as it gave me as the reader a better understanding into his psyche.

I highly recommend this book and I am excited to see more from this author in the future.

‘The Mannequins’ is a thoroughly exhilarating and morbidly dark thriller that I couldn’t put down. Considering this is a debut novel, I was beyond impressed by the author’s ability not only to keep me, a casual reader, engrossed, but also to paint each scene so effortlessly.

What struck me most was the incredible depth the author gave to the villain’s past. It left me questioning the morality of what he went on to do, and at times I even felt sorry for him. That tension brought out a sense of discomfort I seldom experience when reading a book.

There are some graphic moments in the novel, yet each one feels necessary and never included purely for sensationalism. The pacing is excellent, and the characters are well thought out and complex enough to truly care about.

I am so excited to follow the author’s career and hope they continue to write for many years to come.

This book gripped me from the start it was not an easy book to read, but I couldn't put it down!

The author paints a vivid detailed picture of what is happening all through the book, being from Shropshire myself i enjoyed the book being based in places I have visited it made the book even more real for me.

I was so intrigued and gripped on the killers story, as the authors explained slowly how the killer became so disturbed and twisted, which was a very effective touch. turning the gory crime book into a physiological thriller.

there were moments in this book that tugged on my emotions. Without giving anything away, you dont see it coming! if you enjoy reading crime books and listening to true crime pod casts read this book, even being fiction, it felt so real.

Well.... I dont know where to start with this book. wow!!! The author was able to not only provide a good thriller but also a deep dive into the psychology of being a murderer.
I really enjoyed how the author set out each character, providing just enough of a back story to help you understand them, but not too much you felt like you were reading their life story.
The book was well written and kept you wanting more.

The Mannequins is a dark and gripping thriller. We have Detective Cora, who is strong yet has a vulnerable side. Cora is set up with her first lead investigation, and with a possible serial killer on the loose, who's both twisted and clever, she gears up to solve the crime before the next victim is found. It delves into the complex, horrific crimes, as well as Cora's personal struggles displayed throughout the book.

I'm certainly not new to a grittier thriller or even horror; however, I will say this made me want to pick up a darker thriller in the future. The writing was exceptionally well-written and very descriptive. It certainly gave you a cinematic viewpoint, and I could honestly see this as a dark thriller/mystery on television. This is definitely a page-turner; however, it's not for the faint of heart. Check your triggers before diving in.

For a debut novel, C.Toms-Arbel has done a fantastic job, and I look forward to seeing what he writes next.
In The Mannequins, we follow the main character of DS Cora Steele as she works to solve a case involving mutilated bodies being scattered across the Shropshire area. Time and pressure aren’t her friends in this tense cat-and-mouse tale.
C.Toms-Arbel’s book paints a bleak, psychological portrait and offers a fascinating insight into the antagonist's twisted mind within the pages of this story, which is an interesting and bold approach to a novel.
My sincere thanks to C. Toms-Arbel for allowing me to read an ARC copy of The Mannequins. All my opinions in this review are entirely my own, given freely and without any form of compensation.

C. Toms-Arbel’s debut novel, The Mannequins, plunges readers into a chilling and psychologically intricate world where the line between predator and prey blurs. Set against the backdrop of Shropshire’s dense forests, the narrative centers around Detective Cora Steele, a protagonist whose journey from rookie detective to a seasoned investigator is both harrowing and compelling.

The story kicks off with the discovery of a meticulously posed body, an act that sets off a chain of events leading Cora deep into a web of brutality and darkness. Toms-Arbel masterfully paints a portrait of a disturbed killer, whose twisted mind is both fascinating and horrifying. The author’s skillful portrayal of the killer's psyche invites readers to grapple with the complexities of evil, making the narrative more than just a crime thriller; it becomes a psychological exploration of fear, obsession, and morality.

Cora is an engaging lead, and her character development is one of the novel’s highlights. As she navigates the pressures of her first major case, readers witness her growth, resilience, and the toll that the investigation takes on her mental state. Toms-Arbel does an excellent job of capturing the internal struggles Cora faces, balancing her professional duties with personal demons, all while battling skepticism from her peers. This tension adds depth to her character and keeps readers invested in her journey.

The pacing of The Mannequins is relentless, with each chapter leaving readers eager for more. The author does not shy away from graphic descriptions and unsettling themes, making it clear that this is a story intended for an adult audience. The horror elements are palpable, creating an atmosphere of dread that lingers long after the pages are turned. However, it’s not just shock value; Toms-Arbel weaves in a narrative that examines the psychological toll of crime on both victims and investigators.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its ability to keep readers guessing. With each twist and turn, the plot thickens, and the stakes rise, leading to a climax that is both unexpected and satisfying. The moral dilemmas Cora faces add layers of complexity, prompting readers to ponder what they would sacrifice in the face of evil.

However, The Mannequins is not for the faint of heart. The graphic nature of the content and the psychological trauma depicted may be distressing to some. Reader discretion is indeed advised, as the themes explored can be quite heavy.

In conclusion, C. Toms-Arbel’s The Mannequins is a darkly enthralling psychological crime thriller that promises to leave its mark. With a gripping plot, a well-crafted protagonist, and a haunting exploration of the human psyche, this debut novel establishes Toms-Arbel as a formidable new voice in the genre. Fans of gritty crime fiction will find themselves captivated by Cora Steele's journey, and the chilling world of The Mannequins is sure to resonate long after the final page.

Thank you to C. Toms-Arbel for sending me an arc copy and allowing me to read this book early. It was an absolute pleasure. The Mannequins is released on 31st October so make sure you get a copy and read it!!

I know how unsettled I was one evening in 1991, when I returned home from the cinema where I saw that new movie everyone was talking about—"The Silence of the Lambs”. I was genuinely affected by it. Even more by the unbearable tension than the explicit gruesomeness, and it took me literally hours to let its horror fade away from my system.

I was, of course, younger back then, and a far more experienced reader now. So, it’s fair to say that since that moment in 1991, there have been few books or movies that have had the same profound effect on me, that is, until The Mannequins by C. Toms-Arbel. Like in Harris’ book, the tension is palpable and creeps under your skin like a fast-spreading poison, growing from a morbid unease to horrified disbelief. The characters are well defined and flawed, as real people should be. But what makes this book stand apart from most others is its psychological depth.

I know not many books that dive so deeply into the mind of the serial killer itself. Of course, books and movies present us with reasons for the serial killer’s behavior, if only to find clues on how to find and defeat them. Still, these are mostly observations from the outside and speculations about their mindset developed by their pursuers. The Netflix series “Mindhunter” was all about that: three agents trying to unravel the minds of serial killers in an attempt to understand and profile them. That comes close to being inside of a serial killer’s head, but what C. Toms-Arbel does is way more immersive. We are actually witnessing and experiencing from inside the killer what made him who he is, starting with flashbacks at a very young age.

The effect is profound. Not only are we horrified by what he does to his victims, but at the same time, we have to balance that with our compassion for what is done to him. Apart from the superb build-up in tension (and the resolution of it), the struggles of the protagonist (professionally and personally), and the toll the hunt takes on her, this emotional ambiguity makes this book sing.

Highly highly recommended.

I was absolutely hooked on this book! Honestly, I cannot believe it's a debut.

This story is everything one would want in a thriller, a badass FMC, a gripping, dark back story, gore and gruesomeness, it's fast paced, a page turner, there's a disturbed serial killer, honestly, this was perfect. 👌🏻

Our story follows 2 timelines, following our FMC Detective Cora Steele, who has just been assigned her first case after a body is found in the forest. She gathers a team who she trusts and gets to work to find the killer.
The book also goes back in time and follows the story of a young boy growing up in an unloving, deprived home with his mother. The stories then come together and blend seamlessly.

What I loved about this story is that we got to understand the psyche and the reasoning behind the way our killer became who he did, I've read a lot of novels where we see police chasing a murderer, but this is the first I've read where we've got the backstory of 'why' he does what he does, and the first where I've felt sympathy toward the child. This really did add such a fantastic element to the novel as usually we just meet our killers on a surface level. This one we knew.

This book was dark, gorey, discriptive and deep, and showcases just how childhood trauma can shape an adult, and again, as a debut, I am absolutely shook at how brilliant this was. One of my favourite reads of the year!

I would love to see Cora in a sequel and follow her journey and get to know that character even more, but I also can't wait to follow the journey of the author!

If you are fans of writers such as chris carter or sam holland, like descriptive scenes and don't mind gore and dark themes - then this one is for you!!

This novel is a masterclass in psychological dread, a beautifully crafted terror that lived rent-free in my head from the moment I heard of it. As a devoted true crime fan, this book felt less like fiction and more like an episode of the newest psychological podcast, a deep dive into the making of a monster.

The author’s structural choices were highly impressive, particularly the clever use of past and present tense to separate the killer’s formative backstory from the present-day struggles of the detective tasked with catching him. This dual narrative gave the novel a thrilling, split-screen effect. I found myself obsessively searching for clues, and I'm proud to admit I picked up on subtle hints around the middle of the book that led to a very satisfactory conclusion.

I tend to get emotionally invested with the villains I read, since nobody is truly born evil. This book exemplifies that statement. From the start, the sad reality of the killer’s childhood and his desperate search for connection made him a tragically relatable figure. The author made it clear that "the boy" was set to fail at life, and the fact that his name isn’t mentioned until much later amplified this distant feeling—it could have been anyone. Any child. Any teenager.

The gruesome details and the vivid descriptions of the victims and the detective's subsequent trauma were an art form of their own. Perhaps because I'm accustomed to true crime, I didn't find them overly disturbing; instead, they successfully painted vivid images, allowing me to physically feel the characters' reactions and despair.

I must admit I felt a pang of dissatisfaction with what happened to the killer in the end, as I would have loved to dive deeper into his adult mind, but ultimately, he got what was deserved.
I am absolutely grabbing a physical copy of The Mannequins once it's released and look forward to more brain stimulation from C. Toms-Arbel!

A dark, gripping debut that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Rating would be 4.5 stars if Goodreads allowed it.

What experiences mould the twisted mind of a serial k*ller? This is the question C. Toms-Arbel explores in The Mannequins, a psychological crime thriller that packs a punch. The author creates a fantastic balance of unsettling descriptions and character work. It’s a deep dive into a serial k*ller’s past, and the struggle of the detective determined to stop him. Cora is a force of nature, and I adored getting to know her in her pursuit of the truth.

The darker elements of this book were earned and not gratuitous, the environments were immersive and believable, and the story was captivating. I don’t usually read in this genre, but I wasn’t disappointed! Far from it. A must-read for fans of dark and twisted thrillers. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.

4.5⭐️ - I have known about this book for a long time. I knew it was not going to disappoint and it didn’t!

Not only do you get a case with a few murders, but you also get little peaks as to how the murderer came to be. It’s gruesome, gross, and heartbreaking. All you can do is hope for DS Steele to solve the case as soon as possible.

If you enjoy books by Karin Slaughter, Jeffery Deaver and Stuart MacBride, you will love this book.

I really enjoyed this book; it’s been a while since I read a detective book. I’ve been reading mainly romance for a few years now, but as a teenager and up until I was around 29/30, all I read was thrillers, crime and mysteries. My favourites are Karin Slaughter and Stuart MacBride. It was really good to sit and read a good crime thriller again. I liked DS Steele; she seemed authentic.

I also liked the fact that there were a few chapters set in the past, we knew from the beginning who the suspect was, and we got a few chapters of him when he was younger, which helped to show how he became the sicko he was. There was an element of psychology in this book; it not only showed us how police investigate crimes, but also a bit of a look into the killer’s mind.

In the scenes that take us back to the suspect’s past, you do feel sorry for him. He had a bad upbringing, as most criminals do, to be honest. His mother was a piece of work, that’s for sure. This doesn’t excuse his behaviour, but it helps you understand it. After all, his mother battered his psyche.

I’m super excited to see what Cora’s next case is. This is definitely an author that I will be following.

Thank you, C. Toms-Arbel for the ARC of this book.

Im not quite sure how to review this without giving any spoilers away but here goes. This is a gritty crime drama with creepy murders. Cora Steele is handed the lead on her first solo case, being both young and female, many dont expect great results but she has a few supporters in her corner. As the murder case progresses Cora, her colleagues and her friends find themselves in a race against time that will keep you on the edge of your seat to see if they have a happy ending or not.
We also learn about the murderers childhood along the way and see what horrors turned an innocent child into a depraved and cunning murderer.
This may be his first published work but C. Toms-Arbel is up there with the best crime writers.

I really enjoyed this!
Having been in a slump with thrillers this was a breath of fresh air.

it is fast paced and keeps you on your toes throughout.
some scenes are disturbing and not for the feint hearted but I devoured this book!
Everything was described so vividly it felt like you were there. from the mouldy council flat to the garbage dump. (grim)

I particularly enjoyed reading the side of the killer, at points you do kind of feel for him...

will we get a sequel to continue Coras story? 👀

Cora, a junior detective, gets assigned to a new case. A serial killer in a small town where nothing of the sort has ever happened, causing locals and the department themselves to lose hope within her with each body. Though, this doubt drives her towards the truth and the one killing all these innocent girls.

This psychological thriller leaves you in such suspense, each new terror worse than the last. And when you find out what happens, it will leave you absolutely stunned.

Dark, Gripping, and Impossible to Put Down
Christian Toms-Arbel’s debut crime thriller is a masterclass in psychological suspense. DS Cora Steele, a talented but inexperienced detective, is thrust into a chilling murder investigation in rural Shropshire—one that spirals into a series of killings. Battling sexism, prejudice, and her own PTSD, Cora must outwit a killer who turns his victims into life-sized dolls.
The dual narrative is brilliant: while Cora hunts for clues, readers glimpse the killer’s traumatic past, adding depth without excusing his crimes. With sharp characterisation, relentless pacing, and echoes of Thomas Harris, this novel will leave you breathless—and desperate for the next Cora Steele case.

The Mannequins is a good read—refreshingly different from the typical crime thriller. Rather than leaning on nonstop action, it takes a deep psychological dive into the mind of a murderer. As a true crime junkie, I felt like I was dissecting the killer piece by piece, uncovering not only what he did, but why he did it. His tragic backstory almost makes you feel sorry for him—though only for about a minute. This layered approach makes the book both haunting and fascinating, and it lingers with you long after you’ve finished.

What can I say about this book? This has to be in my top 3 of books read this year.

I love the location of the story, many of the locations mentioned i have visited, being from the Midlands myself.

The storyline is so amazing, its very descriptive, addictive and gripping.

This is my go to genre to read and it did not disappoint. I love the way its written, the way the story is built up and the character development.

I would recommend this to any fans of psychological thriller books. Its so clever and fast paced, I was hooked and couldn't wait to see the outcomes for the characters.

Definite 5 star review, cant wait to grab a physical copy on release day!

The Mannequins is a chilling psychological suspense that grips from the very first page. Vivid, unsettling descriptions bring the bleak setting to life and give the reader an insight into a very cold childhood.
At its heart lies Jacob, a boy scarred by cruelty and neglect, whose tragic upbringing shapes him into something far darker. His story is both heartbreaking and horrifying, a stark reminder of how cycles of trauma can continue across generations. Detective Cora Steele provides a compelling contrast: strong, loyal, and fiercely independent, yet vulnerable beneath the surface. She is a dynamic and likeable FMC who carries the investigation with grit and humanity.
The novel unfolds across two timelines and perspectives, weaving together psychological depth, disturbing crimes, and police procedural detail with impressive skill. The pace never falters, balancing atmosphere, tension, and shocking twists.
Brilliant debut and the start to what I’m sure will be an excellent police procedural. Fast-paced, layered, and immersive; this book has everything you want from a crime thriller. I’m already looking forward to book two.

I've read The Mannequins and I can't even begin to explain the excellence in the narrative, the way the mystery in it just wraps you, how the characters are built to become part of your life, I felt I knew them in person, I could picture them in my mind as if I'd seen them a thousand times. The crime and thrills are escalated at such a perfect pace. They actually feel like you're living it. what a marvellous read this was. C.Toms Arbel has done an impressive job with this novel, and I can't wait to read more of his work!!!
