First off I want to thank the author @authortorilewis for sending me a gifted copy of this book. Reading this was such a joy!
🌕 Synopsis
After finding Quinton McCall passed out in a ditch over a year ago, Lorabelle Brim has helped manage his curious malady by locking him in an abandoned factory come the full moon...until the night the door fails and he escapes. When the body of a prominent Alva farmer’s wife turns up mauled in a ravine, Lorabelle and Quinton must cover their tracks and find a new way to keep him restrained. But as more people turn up dead, tensions in Alva begin to rise, and paranoia seeps into the cracks of a community fractured by a nationwide Depression.
🌕 My Thoughts
I loved this one. Just when I thought I knew exactly where this book was going, it threw me an INSANE curve ball. The plot is strong, but the characters absolutely made this story. I fell in love with each of them and my heart broke it them at the end. Shame on you Tori Lewis for breathing life into these characters and making me feel for them! I really appreciated how this played out like an old time wolf man film. It even had the lynch mobs and everything!
🌕 Vibes
🐺 Werewolf 🐺 Complicated Characters 🐺 Found Family/Misfits 🐺 Gore/Werewolf transformations 🐺 Some romance/pining sprinkled in
I have to say that I never cease to be amazed by the talent that Tori Lewis has. I have eagerly awaited this book for months, and I have to say that not only was I not disappointed I was astounded at just how well she is able to entertain and yet convey deep, biblical truths. This book is by far the most beautiful, compelling, and amazing artistic expression of what we theologians refer to as the "Simul". The concept of being simultaneously justified and sinner is a concept we find in Romans 7:15-25, the idea that though we are seen as a saint by the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit and yet still struggle with the sinner that remains in our flesh is perfectly encapsulated in the legend of the werewolf. Yet it was not until I read this book that I realized just how perfect this articulates it.
This book captures you into a world that is fast fading from living memory into dusty history books. Today we struggle to understand how difficult that world must have been to live through, and yet Tori takes us there through her storytelling talent to experience a glimpse of what it must have been like. Then she introduces characters that we can all identify with. There isn't a single character in this book that the reader shouldn't be able to see themselves in, even the judging eyes of the townspeople or the lecherous comments of one of three different sheriff characters (I'm trying to avoid spoilers, even small ones).
What is more is that there isn't a single human being who can't relate to having something deep within that we know is wrong with us and yet we know we are absolutely powerless to do anything about on our own. And this book, this wonderful story, captures that feeling, that truth about every human being, and articulates it in a way that is impossible not to relate to.
By the time I came to the epilogue, I felt as though I were jolted from a dream as I remembered how the story started. And I felt so...satisfied by the end of it. The message of Law and Gospel perfectly in balance in this story left me setting this book down feeling the overwhelming hope of faith and the peace that surpasses understanding as much as a well balanced service of Word and Sacrament in church does.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Together with her first novel, I find myself adjusting my list of favorite books I have read, and I look forward to what she writes next.
No sophomore slump here. Like with her first book, the author obviously has a handle on the craft with prose that is lyrical and lavender, never going too far into purple.
Honestly, this book blew me away. The tension, pacing, and horror would all make Stephen King proud. And then there’s the emotion. I should deduct a star since she had the audacity to make me cry, but I became so attached and invested in these characters.
After reading Tori Lewis' first book I could hardly wait to read this one. And it did not disappoint!!! Great storyline, edge of your seat reading, and plot twists you never see coming!! Just wow! Well worth the read!! Super talented writer for me. Am already looking forward to more of her stuff in the future! The storyline makes each character relatable and you're either rooting for them or awaiting them getting what they deserve! Loved the ending so much too! Add this one to your list!!
Not my usual brand of horror but on the whole, I genuinely loved this book so much. Quinton felt like my uncle. Not entirely sure how I felt about the twist at the end but what a sweet story and such beautifully fleshed out characters. May or may not have shed a tear at the epilogue.
