💎🗡 Time Travel Romance, Magical Relic, Protective Warrior, Adventure, Spice
Such a great, fast paced time travel romance. This book is for fans of Outlander, readers who love rival clans, and a love that transcends time. I loved the FMC and MMC. When Evie visits her sister, she doesn't expect to be transported back into time. Callum, a protective warrior, took a bit of time to believe Evie was from the future. Their romance started out as a slow burn, but boy did it sizzle. This book kept me interested the entire time. The audio sounded amazing and Luisa did a wonderful job.
Thank you to Netgalley, Dragonblade Publishing, RB Media, and Michelle Miles for this ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Desiring the Highland Laird Highland Destiny #1 Michelle Miles ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Evie Sinclair comes to Edinburgh to attend her sister's gala at the museum. When she's shopping on the Royal Mile she feels some sort of pull to visit a certain store. Once inside, she feels she must have an ancient odd looking stone that makes her feel different. The proprietor of the store gifts her the stone and seems to know she has two other sisters and that she is a Sinclair. But little does Evie know that this stone has the power to transport her back in time to the rugged landscape of 14th century Scotland and the arms of a sexy Highlander that she has had many dreams about.
Callum MacLeod is determined to keep his secrets to himself. But when a beautiful young woman arrives from the future bearing a part of the keystone he's been searching for he can't believe it. Now he's got a lot more on his plate as he must keep this keystone very closely guarded to prevent it from falling into the hands of the rival clan who are determined to get the keystone and use the powers for themselves.
As Evie grows closer and closer to Callum, the power of the relic becomes clear. A rival clan is desperate to secure their ascendency, and will stop at nothing to obtain the very keystone that brought her to the Highlands.
Michelle Miles is a new author to me and one that I will not hesitate to read again. This is a time travel book which is my absolute favorite. From the moment I started reading this book there was nothing else around me. All I could do was read on to see what happened next. Evie and Callum were perfect for each other and they had charisma that was off the charts. I honestly can't wait to see what this phenomenal author writes next.
✨ Review: Desiring the Highland Laird — A Timeless Escape ✨
Oh, my heart is absolutely fluttering! 🏰lingering looks, misty glens, and a hero who is every bit the rugged, protective Scot I’ve been dreaming of. Desiring the Highland Laird is the ultimate "comfort read" for anyone who wants to be swept away from their everyday life and dropped right into the 14th-century Scottish Highlands. There is something so magical about a story that starts in a dusty Edinburgh antique shop and ends in the arms of a man who looks at his heroine like she’s the only person in the world. 🏴✨
Evie is such a relatable and lovely FMC; I felt that "inexplicable excitement" right along with her when she found that mysterious stone! Watching her navigate the 1300s with grace and grit was so satisfying. And then there’s Callum MacLeod—swoon. He is a total warrior with a heavy burden of responsibility, trying to protect his clan and a secret keystone from his rivals. He’s all broody intensity and ancient traditions until Evie enters his life, and seeing his walls crumble for her was just everything. The "unlikely alliance" trope is handled so beautifully here, as they learn to trust each other across centuries. 🌿⚔️
The romance is mature, tender, and deeply emotional, perfectly capturing that "destiny" vibe without feeling rushed. I loved the tension of the rival clan closing in and the high-stakes mystery of the stone’s power, but the real heart of the book is the choice Evie has to make: her modern life or a future in the past with Callum. It’s a gorgeous, atmospheric journey that reminds you that love really can transcend time itself. If you’re a fan of Outlander vibes but want a focused, romantic adventure with a truly sexy Laird, you absolutely need this on your nightstand! 🕯️❤️
Thank you NetGalley and RBMedia for the ARC of this audiobook.
3.5 ⭐ Once you realize you must suspend disbelief for this book, you will have a good time. Magic stones, goddesses, time travel, prophecies, and so much more. I was expecting unicorns or the Loch Ness monster, with this being 14th century Scotland lol
Other than that, this book was cute. It was very much like an adult fairy tale. Very reminiscent of Brave with the location, time frame, and magical tapestries. The romance portion was fantastic, even though I am not that big of a fan of insta-love
Though, the feminist in me says that a man is not worth staying 700 years in the past lol
Michelle Miles whisks us back to the fierce, wild beauty of 14th century Scotland in this first installment of the Highland Destiny series. I'm a fan of Michelle's YA fantasy fiction but hadn't read any of her stories for adult readers prior to this one, and it did not disappoint.
Evie Sinclair has lived a quiet life, working hard to put her beloved sister through college and placing her own dreams on hold. When a magical stone unexpectedly transports Evie back through time to the Dundale castle, she's thrust into an adventure of her own, rife with deadly clan warfare and mysterious prophecies.
I enjoyed the slow-burn romance between Evie and Callum MacLeod, who take their time to trust one another and genuinely connect, despite being woven together by destiny. I was even more touched by the sense of found family that Evie develops with the steward's wife, Roslyn, who becomes like a mother to her. Roslyn helps Evie to adjust to life in ancient Scotland and even teaches her to cook, which is super sweet.
This was an intriguing and romantic start to the series, and I'm excited to see how the story continues in the second book.
Desiring the Highland Laird by Michelle Miles is a captivating blend of Scottish legend, magic, and sizzling romance. The rich historical detail and sweeping Highlands setting make you feel transported in time, while the characters—brave, passionate, and full of heart—pull you right into their story. With a perfect mix of fantasy, intrigue, and slow-burn heat, this book delivers everything I want in a Scottish historical romance. An enchanting, unputdownable read!
This historical time-traveling romance follows Evie, a Texan who visits her twin sister in Edinburgh and winds up getting a weird keystone in a shop, gets chased down, and then winds up in 14th century Scotland at a castle on the Isle of Skye. Evie literally falls from the sky and into the lives of the MacLeods. The MacLeods and those from this area know of a prophecy that involves a timestone. The Sinclair and the MacLeod bloodlines would need to unite to defeat the MacDonalds, who want the power of these 3 stones. So there are 3 sisters as well, and Evie is the focus of this one. She has to convince Callum, the eldest son of the Laird, that she really is from the future, and it is what takes up the first half of the book. The second half is learning about the MacLeod's, falling in love, and learning about the stone that Evie winds up with. This involves magical storytelling tapestries, goddesses, and luck.
The story is fun, but you know what is going to happen just based on every other time-travel historical romance out there, but our MMC is not a brute, and there is not a whole lot of bad stuff that happens to our FMC or MMC. We do go in quite a few circles as well, so plenty of repetition and setup for the other two sisters to travel back in time. Though there are some intimate scenes, they aren't spicy. As with all of the insta-love we have, that is always going to knock down a rating for me. I don't do love at first sight or within a week or two. Lust I get, but Love. No. Your characters can not know one another well enough to love each other. They may be fated, but even fated mates have to get to know one another to actually fall in love. No, dreaming of one another before you met does not count as courting either. Other than that, it is a decent romance and worth the read.
The audiobook has one narrator, and for the most part, she does a great job. However, she is reading for an FMC from Texas, and the narrator is clearly British. Her accent goes in and out as she reads for Evie. As a Texan, Evie doesn't sound Texan. Though she is from Dallas, Dallas natives tend to have less of a southern drawl to their accents than those from other parts of the state. Anyway, it wasn't even that it was that her American accent was not consistent. Her Scottish accents were fantastic, though, and everything else was top-notch.
I'm a sucker for time travel romances so when I saw this book I knew I had to give it a try. This book has so much of what I look for so I enjoyed this book the entire time. Evie and her twin lost their parents when they were younger and their older sister raised them till they were old enough then she left and went back to her life. Evie has always been closest to her twin but lived apart so now that they would be back together Evie couldn't wait. Seeing her sister should have been the best day she's had in a long time till her twins boyfriend inserts himself in every moment they have.
When out with her sister Evie finds a store that calls to her and an item she can't stay away from. Later Evie and her sister find themselves in danger and the person who orchestrates it is none other than her sisters boyfriend wanting the very item Evie couldn't leave behind. Then Evie finds herself flung back in time. Callum and his family have always been told the tale of their destiny but Callum has never believed it. When Evie shows up he still thinks the tales he was told as a child are wrong even if he is drawn to Evie. Soon the draw he has to her is too powerful and the story he learned as a boy seem to be true. That Evie and her sisters will come and change everything.
This was greta time travel book we see a lot in this book and are introduced to a lot of new characters and stories set up for future books. Callum and Evie are a greta couple and Callum is a great hero. Because this is a series with the other two sisters story still to come the main story is not finished with this book however we see a greta conclusion to Evie and Callum's romance. This is just one of those fun books, the time travel aspect is done well and I really enjoyed the characters and the story as well as the insight into what is to come. I defiantly will get the other books.

I received this audiobook as an ALC and this is my honest review.
I really enjoyed the story and the fantasy/magical aspect of the historical highland theme. I've read several historical highland books, but this is the first I've had with a fantasy twist and I really enjoyed it!
FMC Evie is an American visiting her twin sister in Edinburgh, Scotland when she has a strange dream of a man in a castle that she has never met or visited before. After stopping in an antique store and finding a piece of stone that seems to be calling to her, she speaks with the shop owner and finds that the stone is somehow historically related to the castle in her dream. After being chased down by her sister's boyfriend at a gala event, Evie is accidentally transported back in time to 1300s Scotland due to the stone she purchased from the antique shop. She is saved by the MacLeod clan and one man in particular takes a special interest in her: Callum MacLeod. Which is a good thing, since Evie has taken a particular interest in him as well. It comes about that Callum's father, the Laird of Dundale Castle believes in a prophecy that Evie may just be tangled up in.
I listened to and read this book. The book is told in 3rd person POV and so the book is narrated by one narrator. She does a good job of the different accents. I think the narrator may be British because when nobody is speaking and it's just plain narration, she has a British accent, but she does an American accent very well (actually, she sounds a bit like Brianna from the TV show Outlander) and a Scottish accent decently as well.
I really hope to be able to listen to the 2nd and 3rd books when they come out - I want to continue this story!
👍🏼 Recommended If You Like: * Outlander * Time Travel * Historical Fantasy/Romance
——
📖 Quick Summary: An American girl travels back in time after running into a mysterious woman in an antique shop while visiting Edinburgh. She travels back into 14th century Scotland.
💭 Final Thoughts The story mimics Outlander’s plot— Scotland, Scottish clans, time travel to the past, a magical “stone”, and war conflict. I love Outlander, so I didn’t mind this plot. However, I felt the characters could’ve had a bit more depth to their personality and background. The ending also fell a bit short for me in terms of the war conflict. I can tell there’s more to this storyline, but I wanted more action and romance in general.
🎙️ Narration The narrator did a great job using different accents. The story is read with a British accent, and the characters had the Scottish and American accent done very well! However, Evie’s voice sounded timid and ‘squeaky’— I’m not sure if this was intended, but it made her character appear helpless and gullible which I didn’t care much for.
——
🛠️ What Could’ve Been Better: - Better chemistry between the main characters. It felt too “insta-lust.” - More fantasy world-building/history
❣️What I Loved: I loved the Scottish accents and being immersed in Scotland. I also like the fantasy plot with time travel.
I actually wouldn’t mind continuing this series because the writing is a quick, easy-read.
If Outlander and The Mummy had a love child raised on misty moors and sheer romantic tension, it would look suspiciously like Desiring the Highland Laird. Michelle Miles serves up a sweeping adventure through time, passion, and peril — the kind of story that makes you want to throw on a tartan shawl and whisper “aye, laird” into the wind.
Our heroine, Evie, is a modern woman who finds herself (quite literally) out of her own time, and straight into the strong, steady arms of Callum MacLeod — a Highland laird with more brooding intensity than should be legal. Their chemistry isn’t a spark; it’s a slow burn — the kind that simmers for chapters until you’re practically begging for someone to do something about it. And when they finally do? Reader, it’s worth every single page of the wait.
What sets this book apart is that it’s more than just a romance — it’s a full-blown adventure. Battles, secrets, destiny, and a generous serving of Scottish magic all keep you teetering between sighing and gasping. There’s no cliffhanger (praise the romance gods), but there’s just enough left to make you eye the calendar for the release of book two.
The supporting cast — the MacLeods, the Sinclairs, and everyone in between — are charming enough to deserve their own novels, and the world-building feels cinematic. You can practically hear the bagpipes swelling as Evie and Callum face down fate together.
If you crave Highland heat, time-travel twists, and slow-burn longing with a pulse, Desiring the Highland Laird will sweep you off your feet and straight into the heather.
THANK YOU TO NETGALLEY FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ THIS BOOK AHEAD OF TIME. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I wanted to love this book but sadly I think I can only say I liked it. The actual plot was pretty good and I liked the mystery element along with how all three sisters are foreshadowed to be important.
Sadly, this book fell into the same trap as a lot of other time travel books for me which was that after the time travel happens, the impact on Evie wasn't really drastic enough to be believable to me. Before she even traveled back I felt that the book was rushing through a lot of needed set up which made the actual time travel not really have an emotional effect which just took me out of the book and I struggled to get back into it. Even at around 40% mark I made a note that I was still waiting for the book to feel like anything mattered. It just didn't. I knew I SHOULD care about the tapestries and the prophecies and the time shards, but I didn't because the main characters weren't selling the story.
That being said and if you are just looking for a fun Scottish romance were the lead is fun, sassy modern woman and the Scott has a great accent, great body, and is really easy to daydream about, this checks that list off easy. The romance element was fun, flirty and hot. Loved it.
I think this book is worth reading, especially for the romance element, but I'm not sure I would pick up the rest in the series.
DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this story! This was more than a romance. It was a 300-page adventure that I did not want to stop!
Evie and Callum’s chemistry was a delightful, slow-simmering boil. They were drawn to each other from the very first time they laid eyes on each other, even though they didn’t know why. I loved watching their feelings grow, and how they leaned on each other during tense moments.
I was so intrigued by the story, and pleasantly surprised that it didn’t end on a cliffhanger. The characters are all so wonderful, and the story will have you on the edge of your seat! This is the first of three books in Michelle’s Highland Destiny series, and I can’t wait for the other two to come out! I need more of the MacLeods and Sinclairs!
Read this is you like: - Outlander vibes - romance set in the Scottish Highlands - a modern woman transporting back in time - a long but rewarding slow burn - a thrilling adventure that doesn’t slow down
Thank you to NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for providing me with an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I thought it was going to be a traditional spicy highland romance, but it’s so much more! We’ve got time travel, prophecies, warring clans, mystery, family dynamics, witches, protectors of the fate of man. I really enjoyed the story and want to keep finding out what happens next.
This was an audio read and the narrator did a great job. I wish her voice was a little more rugged for the men but that’s my only complaint. I thought the accents were done very well with British, Scottish and American.
This had some Outlander influence, but with much less depth (which isn’t a bad thing, Outlander is such a long book). The romance was kind of assumed almost, it did build up but I would have liked a bit more trials and turbulence with them, rather than the acceptance of how they are meant to be together. It wasn’t very spicy, it was pretty slow burn actually. No spice til about 75% in, which was surprising based on the cover 😂 overall it was a good read for my historical fiction loving mind. I’ll going to look for book two in the series to see what happens to her sister!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and PB Media, recorded books for the audio ARC. All opinions are my own!
Scottish highlanders, time travel, prophecies and romance, it's really a can't-lose mix.
This was a fun read, likely to appeal to lovers of Outlander. It doesn't have the same epic feel or dense storyline, instead it's a light and fast paced romance, with some intriguing twists and turns. I picked it up when I was between two heavy books, and it hit just the right spot.
The audiobook added to the sense of adventure and mysticism, and brought the characters to life. I'd definitely recommend enjoying it in this form, as the narrators did a wonderful job of capturing the dramatic and emotional experiences of the characters.
This book sets up nicely for a series, and I'm looking forward to learning more about Evie's sisters and the prophecy in the coming books.
Thank you for the publisher for an advance copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed are my own.
This time travel romance was one of my favorites. I loved the story and the characters. The author framed the story through the lens of family which gave the story heart. Callie and Evie were instantly attracted and their relationship was pushed forward because of the looming threats which kept the story moving at a good clip. There was a lot of information but it never felt overwhelming. The author also used background characters to give us the information we needed to understand what was happening without having to find some mysterious something which i enjoyed since it didn’t require a ton of side quests to get the story. Overall, this is a great read with a compelling story and interesting characters with a healthy dose of romance. The narrator did a great job with so many characters and voices including different accents and the language differences across time.
This is a story about a woman who gets thrown back in time, to the 1300s. She had found a mysterious stone at a bookstore. The people who reside in the the 1300s are not too shocked to see a person from the future. They know that there's a prophecy about a woman who just appears, so they're not too startled. In addition to the magical stone, there's a tapestry that predicts the future. Evie and Callum are very compatible and both extremely beautiful people. Their relationship is very hot and Evie is falling more and more in love with Callum while she is trying to decide if she's going to stay in his time. Great beginning to the series! Thank you to Michelle Miles and Dragonblade for the copy of this book.
This was a slowburn romance filled with prophecies, destinies, clan wars, and mysteries.
Both MCs were very realistically portrayed. Callum with his skepticism of the prophecy and Evie with her complete lack of knowledge of history, customs, and language. I liked Callums father and Rosalyn. His brother was fun, too.
What did not quite resonate with me was that the book seemed a little repetitive. Callums disbelief was annoying, especially when it dragged on and on. Yes, this one point is on my good and bad list!
The narration was excellent. Louisa Underwood got the accents right, although her American drawl may have been a tad bit exaggerated.
Overall, it is a decent read, and I do want to read books 2 and 3.
I went into this one a little skeptical after reading the excerpt—it initially gave me Outlander vibes—but the story quickly carved out its own space. I really enjoyed the book overall; it was fun, charming, and featured a dreamy laird paired with a sassy modern woman. The romance was flirty, light, and genuinely entertaining.
Where the story fell a bit short for me was Evie’s character development. She had the potential to make a much stronger impact on the story, but her arc felt underdeveloped and somewhat flat by comparison.
That said, the narration was spot on and added a lot to the overall experience. Overall rating: 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to Michelle Miles, Recorded Books, and NetGalley for the ARC.
Pub date: 5/9/25 I was lucky enough to be able to read an ARC copy of this novel through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Oh how I binged this book. When I first start d reading it I was incredibly confused but as it went on it all started to unfold. I loved how Evie’s way of thinking slowly started to adjust to where she was showing how she was embracing what was happening as best as it could. Binged in a matter of hours, I cannot wait for what comes in Book 2. Michelle has set this series up beautifully with an incredibly clear, whilst still hidden, path for what’s to come. I honestly cannot wait for the next in the series!
It's always interesting to read about time travel with many magical nuances.
But one thing that never makes sense to me in these stories is how people adapt so easily to the new life. Honestly, I don't think it would be so easy for me to be without plumbing, toilets, and electricity!!!
But the romance in the story is interesting, and I'm curious to know about the continuation of the story and the arrival of the other two sisters in the past!
The audiobook is narrated by Louisa Jane Underwood, with good nuances for the characters.
Desiring the Highland Laird by Michelle Miles is a quick, easy listen. It starts off a little slow but then is full of adventure, family struggles, and love. Evie and Callum's love unfolds beautifully. This story is a great beginning to the Highland Destiny series.
The narration by Louisa Jane Underwood is done well. It is easy to understand at 1.5x speed.
I am very thankful I received an ALC through Netgalley of this audiobook.
I thought this book was fantastic. For me, any book of the highlands is like a palette cleanser for me. This one did not disappoint at all. It has well developed characters, a great storyline, and the narrators did a fantastic job.
5 stars
Many thanks to Net Galley and RBmedia for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A fantasy of unbelievable wonders, tapestry , one humming stone and love. The wars of two clans with one evil clan intending to empower the Highlands. I loved the story, characters and the forever love story!
Fabulous time travel story from America to Scotland. Time travel isn't usually one of my favorites but this one held my attention from beginning to end. The slow burn chemistry between the characters as well as a beautifully written plot made it possible! Take time to read it and be surprised.
This was an okay book, with an interesting plot that mostly held my attention. I loved Outlander, and it definitely had that same vibe! I think the writing could have been better, as I found myself just going through the motions of reading without feeling fully immersed in the world. I would have liked a little more depth, since some parts became repetitive. It’s one of those quick-paced books you can finish in a day.
I enjoyed the Scottish accent and the time jump storyline. Michelle Miles set up the plot in a way that hints there's more to come in future books featuring the other two sisters, which kept me interested in reading more.
A sweeping, romantic escape into the Scottish Highlands! Michelle Miles combines historical charm, rich setting, and sizzling romance in a way that feels both timeless and exciting. If you love protective lairds, strong heroines, and a touch of intrigue, this is the perfect read.
