Bulletproof Skin. Super Strength. Painfully Shy. Willard Meeks—aka The Tank, Los Angeles’ official superhero and former children’s librarian— wants someone to love him for who he is. Not for his bulletproof skin. Not for his larger-than-life public persona, carefully curated for him by his manager, Hopper. Finding someone who shares his passion for kidlit—especially picture books—wouldn’t hurt either.
Grace Kekoa didn’t expect much when she joined BlindDate, the no-photos-allowed dating app—just someone who knew the difference between Beatrix Potter and Harry Potter. What she got was thoughtful, kind, and passionate about books. He feels like a once-in-a-lifetime match. So why is he reluctant to meet in person?
When a doomsday cult threatens to unleash a supernatural monster, Hopper wants Tank’s head in the game—not buried in flirty messages. Besides, Hopper’s already got the ideal, publicity-friendly match for Tank—a gorgeous fashion designer with media appeal and key intelligence on stopping the bad guys.
Now Tank is caught between saving the city, resisting Hopper’s PR-perfect matchmaking, and falling for someone who only knows half of who he is. If he can’t figure out how to balance heroics and heart, this might be one story that doesn’t get a happy ending.

In the world of Tanked, superheroes exist, but their existence is highly regulated. To be a superhero is to be alone. Laws prohibit team-ups, and there can only be 1 hero per city.
Willard Meeks is the hero of L.A. His hero name is The Tank. He's big, has super strength and bullet proof skin. But inside he's a big softie. He used to be a kids librarian before becoming a hero and he finds it increasingly difficult to juggle the persona his agent carefully crafted of The Tank (unstoppable, unbreakable tough guy) with who he truly is deep down (kind, caring, sweet and nerdy). Feeling increasingly lonely, Tank joins BlindDate, a dating app where no photos are allowed. There he can be almost completely himself.
But when he is distracted during a mission by his app messages with Grace, a woman in Vegas who shares so many of his interests, his agent, Hopper, decides to try to set Tank up with a more "appropriate" woman, fashion designer Elodie, who happens to have inside information that will be essential to Tank's next mission. Hopper especially pushes the match after Tank gets special permission to go to Vegas to try and stop a doomsday cult/terrorist group that has been escalating their attacks against L.A. and Vegas.
To his horror, Tank finds himself falling for both Grace and Elodie. But he feels most guilty about is hiding essential aspects of himself from both of them, because Grace only knows the sweet librarian side and Elodie only knows him as The Tank (though she gets pretty good at uncovering his softer side).
Tanked is a super cute and sweet love story laid over an action packed superhero adventure. Tank reminds me a little of Captain America: a kind, gentle giant of a man who wants to do the right thing and protect everyone. Elodie and Grace have their own secrets too, but they aren't revealed until near the end of the story. And the twist at the end? 🤯
Thank you so much Kelly Fae Wilson for the opportunity to advance read Tanked!
TANKED is The Incredibles + romance for an adult audience. Bonus if you love children's books because our hero was formerly a librarian.
This book is so much fun! I enjoyed how the characters have secrets and how those secrets are revealed. Tank is full of angst of his role and who he is. The villains are complex too because they have different motivations and dreams. I think this book will take you places you do not expect.
There were moments when Tank reminded me of a geeky Spiderman because he's such a down to earth guy who does extraordinary things. Grace is interesting because of her physical challenges, and I just couldn't figure out how she was going to handle meeting Willard (Tank) in person. It's such an interesting dynamic. I thought Grace's family and connections with friends felt genuine and realistic. Grace is definitely a character you'll want to sit down with and have a chat.
From the description, I knew there was a doomsday cult. BUT I did not expect to see how Tank worked at solving the problems and the story climax. I really can't say more because you have to read it for yourself, but it is pretty darn epic. :D
I feel like this book slightly crosses genres and could be called superhero book, an urban fantasy, and definitely a romance. The overarching genre is a romance with all these other essential elements of superpowers and villains. It will appeal to fans of DC Comics and Marvel Comics because of the superheroes and a sense of whimsy. Fans of the miniseries The Flash will fit right in for this audience too. It also fits for readers who like Steelheart. If you know someone who grew up reading Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children or Amulet, this is the type of book that they will enjoy now that they're older.
I highly recommend this book. It's a fast and fun read. You could also share it with your teens.
Happy reading!
I received an ARC. All opinions are my own, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
This is a really cute lil superhero romance story. The vibe was very similar to something like Rainbow Rowell. Tank is a big, strong, impenetrable superhero. But before that, he was a children's librarian. He loves books, he loves his cat, and he really struggles with a hurt tummy (bro somebody get tank some tums or prilosec or something, acid reflux is a solved problem, one that's relentless for this dude). He's really a gentle soul. But his agent wants him to broadcast this strong intimidating image, and, being a bit of a pushover, he does whatever he's told.
Meanwhile, he's messaging someone on a dating app (one that doesn't allow pictures) and he's finally free to be himself. He's falling in love with Grace, who lives in Vegas. Lo and behold, the supervillains he's chasing end up taking him to vegas, and our story goes from there.
The romance is cute, there's a bit of a love triangle with an unexpected resolution.
There's this "nameless" section that's a little bit cringey, but I like how it resolved.
Hopper is an awful manager. I understand tank is a soft-spoken non-combative guy (wrong career lol, thats the joke), but this dude treats him like absolute garbage. It's laughable, it's obnoxious. I think he would've been more compelling if he treated Tank well while still being incredibly selfish, if he was more manipulator than obvious jerk. But his awfulness is a key part of the plot.
I enjoyed this book! Well written, thoughtful, fun, and uplifting.
This book was not quite what I expected. I expected superhero: punch-punch, get the girl. While there's a bit of that, it's more about self-discovery and love. (I expected the love part, and wasn't disappointed! Clean and sweet). The self-discovery felt genuine and empathetic. When the characters felt frustrated and conflicted, so did I. That is NOT to say the story is boring. I was well entertained.
Really adorable, with a twist that I didn't see coming, but feel like I should have because it was so well laid out (it's a great twist). Expect a happy ending. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a fun book! I love superheroes and star-crossed love, so this was right up my alley. I really appreciated the library affection that runs throughout this novel. I like the multiple journeys of self-discovery, and the protagonist’s dark night of the soul really spoke to me. Good romantic tension with a hint of spice. And I even got some of my favorite trope, betrayal! Recommended!
Loved this book! Tanked is a fun, quick-paced story that uniquely combines action, drama, and romance into a gripping ride that keeps you turning the pages. I loved Willard's awkwardness and Grace's determination. This is a fantastic book with excitement and heart—highly recommend!
Very disappointed that there was ZERO spice in this. It needs to be labeled correctly. This is not an adventure romance it's a CLEAN romance! It's not what I expected at all. I'm very disappointed by this. While the writing was ok it's not my cup of tea.
This was an amazing, fast-paced read! Willard (Tank) and Grace were amazingly complex characters that were so loveable. This book was part superhero, part finding yourself, and part romance. All these things worked together to create an epic story that kept me enthralled from page one. Well done!
If you're looking for a sweet romance with a wild ending, this is your book! The two love interactions kept me surprised and engaged. The main character's arc is super unique, a soft-hearted man learns to stand up for himself and fight to save the city and the love of his life.
I really adored this. A wholesome superhero stuck in a capitalistic and greedy world that feels all too familiar. Tanked showcases a level of authenticity that I feel we all could use more of these days, highly recommend! A slow but incredibly powerful burn.
For me: Overall, really liked it and would recommend. The characters are great. Some plot twists were predictable and others were a complete surprise.
1. Would have loved more background about everyone and Tank suddenly getting powers. Wonder if this will be addressed in book 2.
2. The actual beast being real seemed tacked on. Why did the main characters so easily believe there was an actual portal and beast? It seemed like there should have been something else going on or mentioned so this didn’t feel so odd. He was evil but not really…what the heck was going on?
