Asher MacGregor has come to the haunted hills of the Blue Ridge with his elderly grandmother to visit her ailing sister. Her home is an old one, deep in the Appalachian woods, and Asher has good reason to be uneasy there. His mother died in those mountains, a victim of witchcraft. Asher was accused of killing her himself, though he was only a child when she died. Only his young age and the intercession of his father, a powerful witch’s magistrate, managed to save him then. Now, fifteen years later, his father is dead, and it’s long past time for Asher to tell the other magistrates what he knows about the terrible events surrounding the night his mother was murdered.
The magistrate assigned to his case is Ben Jackson, who thinks Asher may still be under a powerful curse that took away his memories of that night—memories of a demon, a witch, and a persistent curse that is still actively stalking him and trying to kill him. Something other than the curse is after Asher, however, and it will take all of Ben’s considerable power and skill and the fact that he has fallen in love with Asher to discover the truth before the warlock that almost killed Asher once, makes another, more successful attempt.
A Witch’s Curse, powerful magic, and ghost stories of the Appalachians combine in this unique adventure story based on the world of fantasy, witchcraft, and magic.
2.25 ⭐ This story is chaotic and all over the place. The characters are inconsistent and neither have any chemistry to speak of, not that it stops them from having totally out of the blue, and entirely unnecessary, sex with each other. It left me scratching my head to be honest.
The magic system is poorly developed, the ghosts mere suggestions, unfortunately, despite the prologue and epilogue mentioning them.
This is a great story that is missing huge chunks of exposition and transition between scenes. Non-spooky things happen suddenly, without any lead up, and there are references to conversations that didn’t happen. It’s very choppy and the ending appears abruptly. I don’t know if too much was lost and not replaced during the editing process or if it wasn’t there in the first place. The quality of the story makes it worth a second edition to fix it.
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. But there were a lot of typos and continuity issues. The wrong person will be attributed with saying something when they were asleep and a different person was talking. It felt very rushed and a bit disjointed.
I might try another one of this author's books just to see if they can get a better editor and proofreading team. Like I said, good concept I love magic and all that stuff, but it needed some refinement.
The premise of the book is fine, but the entire book (minus the epilogue) happens in 3 days. The romance and unraveling of the old mystery all happens so stupidly fast that it's ridiculous. Most of the plot is just remembering the past... And then the climax and end are just suddenly there and done. I sort of expected it as I have read a few Shannon West books before and that's basically par for the course.
Asher is a college teaching assistant who had a bad accident. He is currently trying to get his leg healthy so he can walk unassisted. Ben is a Magistrate with the council and finds Asher has had his magic bound. There is something wrong with Asher and he’s going to find out what it is. Highly Recommended
I think this could have been an amazing book with a little more time, thought and editing put in to it. I found the story intriguing, but it seemed rushed and a bit all over the place.
The writing was confusing, a lot of rehashing. But Basically the mystery is what happened to Ash as a child. Being cursed, and having his magic bound. Overall, this book wasn’t for me.
Good story. caught my attention and I couldn't stop until I finished it. Enjoyed both the writing and Ben and Asher's characters. Recommend reading, I have never read a book from this author that I have not enjoyed.
