Fight For Your Fairytale offers a refreshing and creative spin on the self-help genre by framing personal growth as an immersive role-playing game (RPG) adventure. Even if you’re not familiar with RPGs, Ochab makes the world accessible and fun, using it as a clever metaphor for navigating real-life challenges.

The book invites readers to step into the role of the hero in their own story, facing obstacles, learning new strategies, and ultimately fighting for their own “fairytale.” One of the standout features is the inclusion of “Side Quests,” which encourage readers to step away from the main narrative and actively practice the tools and strategies presented. These quests make the experience interactive, empowering readers to apply the lessons in meaningful, real-world ways.

Fresh, playful, and deeply practical, Fight For Your Fairytale transforms self-growth into an engaging quest.

I received an advanced copy and while I haven't finished it yet (boo grown-up obligations), my busy schedule has given me space in between reading sessions to process and consider what this story has to say.

"Fight For Your Fairytale" analyzes the author's real life fight with breast cancer through the lens of a fantasy story straight out of a D&D campaign. I'm reading this at an interesting time in my life, as my mother is currently recovering from a successful battle with breast cancer.

I read science fiction as much as I read fantasy. Something I really like about sci-fi is it's willingness to address real world problems through clever writing and commentary. A lot of modern fantasy is written as a form of escapism, and I get it, but it's refreshing to see a fantasy author tackling real life issues through a fantasy lens. Colleen is a gifted writer who has a lot to say and a captivating way of saying it. I've rolled my fair share of d20's, and I can absolutely say this book passes the wisdom check.

I can't wait to finish this book, and even more so, I can't wait to see what Colleen Ochab does next.

I am not a big self help book reader and rarely read anything but fiction but Fight For Your Fairytale is not your typical self help book. The author Colleen Ochab has a unique way of making the reader feel like they are having a conversation with a new friend. Not a new acquaintance friend but one of those rare friends that you meet and instantly know you are just one of your peeps. Someone who will be by your side no matter what. Colleen’s (yes we are on a first name basis) approach of using her role-playing-game experiences and her brutal honesty about her own fight for her personal fairytale to guide the reader to fight for their fairytale make this a very engaging read. I look forward to reading each chapter and then completing the quest which is designed to help the reader discover and then fight for their own fairytale. I have the excitement and enthusiasm of a hero embarking on an epic quest and yes that quest may be hard and painful at times but the rewards at the end will be worth it. No other self help book or self reflection journey has ever had me this energized, engaged or committed to put in the time and effort required. If you need to Fight for your fairytale please join Colleen and I.

Fight for your Fairytale is a delightful, thoughtful, and fantastic book to inspire and encourage all those who read. Ochab combines her inspiring personal life and her role-playing life together to teach others how to create their own fairytale. She teaches us to flip devastating real life happenings into possibility, fantasy, and more. This book is a great tool and guide for placing the self at the heart of our individual fairytale.

Fight for your Fairytale is such a fun concept! A guide through hard moments, an invitation to introspection and all while bridging the gap between our mental health journey and the joys of an RPG campaign.

Grateful for the journey Colleen has undergone and that she would share her bits of wisdom and discovery in this way! I hope RPG lovers looking for help through difficult situations will find this book.

Decades ago RPG’s were so niche it was rare to find friends that played them. Today they’ve become so ubiquitous their elements of player progression can be found in virtually every genre of video game. Yet, while it’s DNA can be felt still through many different forms its taken, the ground work laid by D’N’D has stayed practically the same simple, but effective idea of a player growing, changing and evolving with a dungeon master watching over them and guiding them.

This is where Colleen Ochab’s book “Fight for your Fairytale” is such a unique idea. It’s effectively a self help book, told thru the frame work of Colleen as your dungeon master and teacher helping you on whatever personal journey you’re on. That journey becomes your quest, the chapters become your level progress and Colleen provides enough personal insight to help you see your life in a different light. While punctuating most chapters with an exercise to help you digest the lesson and inn-act those in your own life.

If that sounds like it can become preachy quick, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking so, but Colleen’s writing is anything but. She has a natural flow that felt like I was always entering into a conversation that was already taking place, but that I was more than welcome to join. She loves to begin chapters with quotes from various forms of media from movies, books and video games that serve as a mission statement for that level of progress you’re about to make.

So in that same spirit I’ll use one of my own. This book felt like I was Colin Firth and Colleen was Geoffrey Rush in the film “The King’s Speech”. In that film King George has a debilitating speech impediment that no doctor or professional was able to cure him of, yet somehow he meets a man who’s tactics work better than any prescription or therapist he ever tried prior. How so? The man wasn’t a doctor of any kind. Yet, his insight was far greater because it came from experience and wisdom as someone who’d been there before, knew the frustration and pain, and knew of a way to live with it and use it.

Earlier this year I tried to read a different self help book that started strong, but after a while it became apparent that the author either didn’t know what they were talking about or it wasn’t coming from a genuine place. Colleen performs a very impressive balancing act of telling her story while also never making it about her. Every time I read the passages about her personal struggles, it always felt like someone was trying to relate to me and not me relate to them. She says herself, that our contexts might be different but pain is all the same and there were some areas were I could relate such as the loss of family members and how to grapple with death being such a deep part of your life. The areas where I couldn’t relate, she has such an eloquent and brutally honest way of communicating it that I felt her struggles. Such as her bout with cancer and the struggles you don’t hear often regarding it like body image challenges and the feelings of hopelessness. What made it even more endearing is she has a humbleness about her that’s undeniable. No matter how hard those battles were she always felt reminded where she was lucky, such as finding a partner that stayed with her during it all.

The book is called “Fight for Your Fairytale” but there’s a unifying idea here that really hit home for me… the “YOUR”. We get so caught up chasing an image of what we’re supposed to be, do or want that we forget that everyone’s fairy tale is unique to them and that we should embrace what makes our journey’s different. She talks very fondly of her DND persona Leone, but encourages you to create one of your own you can use to lean on for your own strength. As I read the parts about Leone I realized there’s not just a lesson in her character, but a lesson in yours, mine, him, her’s and so on. We all have our own character that makes up the gaming board and we all have a part to play in the various party members of our lives and vice versa. Each character has a story to tell. Each story has virtue to bestow on the reader.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, but one with meat on its bones for going back to again and again. I could see myself using it as a workbook whenever I have different challenges in my life. Insert situation or obstacle and see how I can better it, overcome it or learn to accept and understand why it’s there and what benefit it has. I’m sure whatever you’re going through, it’s a journey all your own and Colleen Ochab’s “Fight for Your Fairytale” could serve as your dungeon master to help you do just that… master it.

“Fight for Your Fairytale” isn’t just another self-help book—it’s a heartfelt, immersive guide to becoming the truest version of yourself. At its core, it’s part personal memoir, part motivational manual, and part fantasy-inspired adventure. Colleen Ochab invites you to embark on your own hero’s journey, and she doesn’t just cheer you on from the sidelines—she steps in as your wise and encouraging Game Master.
Framed like a classic fantasy RPG, the book guides you from Level 1 to Level 20, offering side quests, reflective prompts, and real-world challenges to help you unlock your potential. Whether you’re at the start of your personal journey or stuck somewhere deep in the metaphorical woods, this book offers a clear, empowering path forward.
Colleen, a cancer survivor in her mid-twenties, shares her story with vulnerability, humor, and honesty. Her trials never feel like a lecture—they’re shared with the intention of connecting, supporting, and guiding others. She invites you to examine your own “inventory”—what you’re carrying, what’s holding you back, and what tools you can use to move forward. The first half of the book focuses on self-discovery and introspection; the second half shifts into action and empowerment, all the while infused with Colleen’s nerdy, compassionate voice.
What makes this book so unique is the tone. It feels like getting advice from a deeply insightful friend who knows how to speak your language—especially if you’re a fellow nerd, gamer, or dreamer. Colleen gives you room to take your own path, while gently offering structure and wisdom to help you stay on track. Like any great Game Master, she empowers you to write your own story—while equipping you with the skills to make it epic, and most importantly, YOURS!
I’ll be recommending this book to anyone who feels lost or unsure of their next step, especially those of us who wish we had a personal Game Master in life. And the best part? Colleen doesn’t just hand you a book—she opens the door to a welcoming community of fellow adventurers ready to fight for their fairytales, too.
This is a must read, and a book to read over and over as you develop new Fairytales to keep fighting for.
You’ll be lucky to have Colleen as your guide. I know I am.

I’m so glad I made the time for this book! Fight for Your Fairytale is a lighthearted yet engaging call to action—a challenge to begin advocating for your own dreams and taking the steps needed to make them a reality. While the writer does share parts of her battle with cancer and other personal struggles, this is definitely not a depressing story as some other cancer memoirs can become.

Blending captivating characters, relatable (and nerdy) pop culture references, and practical guidance, the book both inspires and motivates readers to begin their own “fight for their fairytale.” The author’s cathartic positivity is contagious, offering encouragement and companionship along the journey. She even invites readers to join her virtual community and explore a variety of web-based resources she’s created to support them along the way.

Each chapter opens with the next part of a fantasy-inspired story of an adventurer at a crossroads in their lives (in a first person format, so seemingly you), followed by sections of reflection, guidance, and “side-quest” challenges to get you started. This structure makes it feel conversational—almost as if you’re sitting in a book club, listening to the author read aloud, occasionally pausing to say, “You know what this reminds me of?”

The author doesn’t just tell you to dream—she lovingly but firmly urges you to act, because she knows you have it within you to make your dreams a reality, while understanding and acknowledging that so many of our goals do not happen overnight but can take a LOT of time and effort. She challenges you to literally set the book down and start taking small, manageable action steps, whatever that looks like for you. It reminded me of something a mentor once told me: “You don’t have to build a perfect wall today; you just have to lay the next brick.” That’s exactly the spirit of Fight for Your Fairytale—a reminder that it’s okay to slow down, but you have to start somewhere and keep going to make it happen.

I’ve always leaned on escapism and fantasy worlds when life feels overwhelming. It’s been my quiet way of coping.. a survival tactic, really. Fight For Your Fairytale reaffirmed that for me in the best way. As Colleen writes, “It was not just escapism; it was a necessity. I was picking up something I hadn’t felt in a long time: creativity and inspiration.” That hit me hard because it’s exactly what this book captures; the reminder that magic and wonder aren’t just for children. They feed us in ways we forget as adults. Creativity, imagination, and a sense of play make life full!

Colleen’s personal story of fighting cancer at such a young age while facing one hardship after another, and through it all finding the courage to chase her dream of becoming a writer is deeply inspiring. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes it takes a shake-up to make us realize how short and precious life really is and how important it is to follow your dreams.

What I love most about this book is how approachable it feels. The methods and exercises she shares are practical and fun! Especially if you love fantasy. Each chapter ends with guided prompts and challenges that gently help you reconnect with your goals, creativity, and sense of wonder (something I find missing in a lot of self-help books!).

Between all the inspiration and wisdom lies a cozy, whimsical adventure story where you are the main character. It mirrors the personal growth journey you’re invited to take, making it feel both intimate and magical. You experience the highs and lows that often come along with chasing a big goal or dream but in a fantasy adventure setting.

I flew through this book and have been recommending it to everyone since! Even my therapist, who got excited to read it after hearing me gush. It’s heartfelt, uplifting, and exactly the kind of book that makes you believe in your own fairytale again.

Blending fantasy with self-help is no small feat, but Colleen Ochab does it with charm, imagination, and deep emotional honesty in her book, "Fight for Your Fairytale." What makes this book truly remarkable is the author’s quiet strength and maturity. Having faced hardship herself with a cancer diagnosis, she writes not from theory but from lived experience. Her optimism isn’t naive—it’s earned, created in adversity and cloaked with compassion.

This book entertains and encourages, while it provides readers with a game plan for achieving their own fairytale. While working the suggested quests and reflections contained at each Level, the reader really knows that the author is interested in their journey and in helping them achieve individual fairytales.

"Fight for Your Fairytale" reminds readers that resilience and sensitivity can coexist, that magic isn’t found in escaping death, rather it is in accepting it as part of life, and living your life accordingly.

Best line of hope: “Their fairytales continue regardless of what transpired before.” Page 53

Best lines of imagery: “…with a voice like waves hitting rocks at the seashore. It is both gravelly and jarring, as well as honed and soothing.” Page 172

Best line of philosophy: “What if you could turn the weights of your life into life vests?” Page 182

Best lines of wisdom: “Let Death be your Life’s Greatest Teacher. Death is not your enemy. Death is a guide, a mentor, a friend. Most importantly, Death is a reminder to look at your life with warmer eyes.” Page 182

Best line opening a chapter: “I walk beside you because warriors walk together.” Page 209

Fight For Your Fairytale is such a refreshing take on the self-help genre. I’m not an avid reader of self-help books, in fact I rarely stray from fiction, but Ochab’s framing using fantasy and RPG elements truly spoke to the nerd in me.
The formatting of the book with a fantasy RPG quest you’re going through, as well as personal anecdotes and side quests kept me super engaged throughout.
The side-quests all slowly build towards the identification and attainment of your goal, the fairytale you’re fighting for. Ochab often uses personal examples of the steps to action each quest, which frankly makes it less terrifying to go out and do the darn thing.
Ochab’s voice reads so clearly throughout, it’s like you can visualize her by your side, cheering you on towards your goals. It’s so easy for us to become isolated in pursuit of our goals, Fight For Your Fairytale reminds us that we’re not alone and gives us actionable steps to breathe and take it step by step. There’s a whole world of people just like you, and Ochab is rooting for you with optimism against every odd. The fairytale exists!

“The dark night of the soul comes just before revelation.” Joe Campbell. Starting a book with a quote from Joseph Campbell--- it has to be good! And, Fight for Your Fairytale, certainly fits the bill. The author, Colleen Ochab, clearly understands the hero’s quest as she manages to blend a fantasy story of a hero’s journey, with a self-discovery, reflection guide that fits together perfectly. Alongside the narrative, Ochab integrates quests (a digital workbook is available to download) which are thoughtful exercises that help readers explore their own “fairytales.” These prompts invite the reader to dig deep, reflect on their dreams, and uncover what’s been holding them back.

Readers can feel the author’s own life experiences in every chapter; she’s been through a lot, but her optimism never wavers. That’s what makes this book shine—it’s hopeful without being unrealistic while Ochab shares how she absorbed a fantasy character of her own creation into her everyday life.

This isn’t just a fantasy tale or a self-help guide—it’s a reminder that everyone deserves their own fairytale, and invites each and every one of us to write our own.

Fight for your Fairytale
By Colleen Ochab
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Self-help meets fantasy. Colleen Ochab explains her journey to finding her better self through her love of RPG’s and storytelling. Diagnosed with cancer in her early twenties, she found a way to keep moving forward through her struggle.

Fantasy is not my go-to, nor is self-help, but I was intrigued nonetheless. True to her word, there’s a little bit for everyone here - I enjoyed references to Harry Potter and Nesta Archeron, even Marie Kondo. I enjoyed following along with her fantasy and connecting that journey to a real-life path to peace and mindfulness. I liked that I could take some advice from her, even though the challenges I’ve endured at this stage in my life don’t quite compares, just by looking up in the night sky, appreciating even the minor characters in my life, and simply tidying up.

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy, and it was an absolute blast to read! I’ll admit, I was a little nervous going in — I don’t typically read self-help books, and I know next to nothing about RPGs. But wow, did this book surprise and delight!

Most self-help books tend to follow the same formula, but this one felt refreshingly different. Of course, there’s still the familiar journey of self-discovery, but it never felt dry or overdone. The RPG tie-in added a unique sense of adventure and creativity, giving the book a fun, almost fantastical feel.

You don’t need to know a thing about RPGs to enjoy this read — Ochab does a great job of introducing the concepts in a way that’s engaging and easy to follow, never once feeling like you’re reading a manual.

If you’re looking for a self-help book but usually find them a slog to get through, this one’s for you!

Self help isn't a genre I usually enjoy to read, but this book is more than just your standard self help book. Fight for Your Fairytale doesn't just shove advice at you, letting you drown in information; it's an intentionally crafted journey that guides you through the steps along the way - with a dash of action and fantasy. It was a pleasant surprise to get a fantasy storyline to follow and tie in with the self help skills being taught. The steps you follow are broken into quests and side quests - a more enjoyable prospect than just following steps or methods. Although the help revolves around fantasy and crafting our own fairytale, the results are very real - Colleen's story and her successes stand testament to what Fight for Your Fairytale can help you achieve.

An enjoyable and memorable read.

This book surprised me and landed a critical hit. I've never adventured into the world of self-help books but this book was geared seemingly just for me. I was able to relate to the message and activities of this book due to my love of RPGs and fantasy; I was able to connect to this book because I want to fight for my fairytale. This book is encouraging, adventurous, and satisfying.

If this is your first self-help book or you're looking for a fresh perspective, this book can help you, it has helped me. The author's personal story is inspiring and thought-provoking. The narrative is fun and thrilling. The activities are reflective, motivating, and creative. I am very grateful to have found this book and this author.

Do yourself a favor, grab this book and open your mind to adventure and a better you! Fight for your fairytale!

Fight For Your Fairytale is a game-changer for anyone tired of the same old self-help advice. Rather than the usual dry, one-size-fits-all tips, this book invites you to view your personal growth through the lens of an RPG, making the journey both fun and deeply relatable. It’s like stepping into a fantasy world where you are the hero of your own life—facing challenges, leveling up, and battling your inner obstacles with the tools provided.

What I love most about this book is how down-to-earth and accessible it is. The "Side Quests" are a brilliant way to make the lessons stick in a hands-on way, and the overall tone is refreshing, playful, and practical. If you’re ready to reframe your challenges as part of your own epic adventure, this is the book you didn’t know you needed.

Colleen has written a wonderful thought provoking book. In so many ways she has carried me along on a journey, whether it was because it was like no other self-help book I have ever read, or because it wasn't like a memoir, nor a biography/non-fiction nor a fiction fantasy book, yet she had her characters take me a wonderful journey with them as she taught me things about myself and life.

Something I have never experienced before and truly loved. I am a person who has generally always been open to reading fiction and learning something from them all the time. Although I read a lot of non-fiction books for greater learning. This, somehow combined the two and did both without confusion.

Well done Colleen! You did bring the inner child out.

Fight for your Fairytale seemed to find my hands at the perfect moment. With my dad's cancer diagnosis and the troubling job market after graduating from grad school, to say I felt disillusioned and defeated would be an understatement. But, Colleen's book felt like a fun (yet stern) pep-talk from a long time friend. The authors willingness to be genuine, vulnerable, and supportive of their audience is felt throughout the entire book. I'm not a huge fantasy or RPG nerd to be honest, but it still manages to speak to me. I love the interactive activities and the entire books desire to build community. I will be sharing this with my friends for sure and I won't lie, I was rushing through some of the life advice just to read the fantasy adventure!

In this book Colleen takes you on an extremely personal and motivating journey through the lens of a fantasy role-play adventure. No matter if you are familiar with tabletop role-play games (TTRPG) like Dungeons and Dragons or not, Colleen's words connects to the reader regardless. As a whole, the book reads more like a conversation and even challenges you to get up from the couch to complete different activities which helps the reader fully embrace Colleen's messages. So if you are currently in need of some personal motivation though tough times or had some struggles in the past, Fight For Your Fairytale could be the fictional excursion you need to find your way back to your path out of the dark and enchanted forest.

This book took me by surprise. I read a lot and this is nothing like I have come across before. It is more than just reading a book with stories, it is more like an experience or an enjoyable journey that you can internalize and feel it impacting and changing your life. I was able to stop and use the Companion Guide as I was going through each level and that really added to my enjoyment. I was always looking forward to the next time that I could be alone and make it thought the next level. I was sad when it was over but I am looking forward to what is next from Colleen. I can't wait ! Thanks for something different and enlightening!!

Brilliantly organized and crafted, this book is a unique, perfect blend for fantasy fans who want to take their self-improvement goals to the next level. Having an author who understands both genres--fantasy and self-help--makes the experience feel like a companion journey, and that's not even including the community that also is built from the additional online resources.

It is really special to hear the author's journey with cancer, especially in the midst of my own health concern journey. That vulnerability coupled with the second person fantasy story made every page a delight.

This book is a motivational guide to pursuing your goals with many analogies to fantasy pop culture like Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, A Court of Thorns and Roses, ect. It has a companion guide and calls to action to help you discover your goals (big or small) and off load baggage that is holding you back. I like the engagement and reflection using journal prompts that this book provides. I would recommend for anyone who is trying to bring their goals back into focus and loves the fantasy genre!

While guiding us through the lens of enticing fantasy, Colleen's take remains grounded in reality, providing simple, approachable, and clear action items. Having faced her own challenges, Colleen is thoughtful and compassionate, and encouraging in her writing. I look forward to more from Colleen, both fiction and nonfiction.

This book is an incredible read—easy to digest and truly inspirational!

Although I typically don't enjoy fantasy, this book skillfully blends fantasy elements with personal development. The integration is so seamless that I found myself appreciating the fantasy aspects. The insights on personal development were particularly valuable. They motivated me to tackle some tasks I had been procrastinating on.

Thank you, Colleen, for sharing your story!
