On the remnants of the old world, society rebuilds. But war looms, and a toxic haze grows.
Luther pushes ahead with his grand plan of securing safety for his city – using deceit and violence.
Zara is hunted as a wanted criminal and finds herself pushed deeper into the Forbidden Zone, unravelling mysteries of the past along the way.
Shelby continues to desperately try to make his way home, but his efforts only plunge him further into the fray, and he finds himself entangled with the enemy.
With the world around them falling into Disarray, will Luther, Zara and Shelby find safety – and home?
We pick up right where we left off in the first book and once again follow the paths of different characters, as they traverse the world that Hook has masterfully crafted. It's with these varied perspectives that the author excels in telling this story. Each chapter leaves you wanting to dive right back into that point of view, but the story takes you on a slightly different route, which only serves to build up the wider narrative and tension.
I'll not linger too much on the actual plot, as it deserves to be read with fresh eyes, free from spoilers. Needless to say, the plot advances in some fantastic ways and once again, I am gasping to find out what happens next!
Wow – it's been five years since Dan Hook’s previous book, but you’d never have known! I fell right back into his expansive world with the eagerly-awaited followup to Displaced – Disarray!
I dropped straight back into this thoughtful, but hard worn world. Things are bleak and our characters goals seem to be ever slipping through their fingers but there remains important and welcome moments of warmth, camaraderie and companionship too, making this world feel well-thought out, with an edge of steel but also one with heart.
Dan’s taut, stylish prose remains and the machinations of our three main characters – Luther, Zara and Shelby continue apace. There’s a real sense of motion with this next book and it’s great to be back with these memorable characters as we explore more of the world of Displaced. This book whips you along for a rollercoaster ride of thrills and tension.
In Displaced, we are introduced not just to a sublimely-crafted post-apocalyptic world, but also to a talented author voice in Dan Hook. With Disarray, his confidence to take his readers for a thrilling ride through a precisely-crafted and realised world shows clearly from every page.
There’s strife from the first book, and this tension that builds up to a climactic, dramatic and edge-of-your-seat ending where our plot threads seem to converge – with imagery akin to Mad Max meets Back to the Future (the one with the train!), the finale to this book both grips you to the core while teasing what’s to come. The imagery is vivid and the action is visceral, and we see changes to the world whose ramifications we are left eager to see, as nothing will be the same again.
There’s tension, intrigue, drama and action throughout in this extremely readable and pacy follow-up, and plenty to enjoy.
Please don’t make me wait another five years, Dan!
It's been a while since Dan Hook released the first book in his post-apocalyptic 'Dark Array' series, but this was worth the wait. I read this book as a beta quite some time ago, and Dan was kind enough to send me the updated, final copy. If you read the first book, then you'll want to jump back into this world, where we left off with the three main characters, Shelby, Luther, and Zara.
Throughout the book, we encounter additional characters who join them on their individual journeys. I loved Eve and the addition of Kiera, too. We also get the union we were hoping for, where paths finally collide and new friendships form. My fav is Shelby, without a doubt, and I hope he gets even more page time in book three. The world-building is strong, dark, and gritty, and believe me, no character is safe. Give this series a try, it is well worth a read!
This is a really enjoyable second part to this well written, post apocalyptic, dystopian mix genre story. Lots more adventure, some madness & mayhem adds excitement. I do like ideas & found it a really great read! I will look for more by this writer.
