Got the audiobook for review.

I love the golden girls and very quickly sent a request for the audiobook. It took a little time to get used to as it's not just a non fiction about the show and actors but also analyse the episodes and scenes and what impact it has both on people but also during the time it aired and after. It was very interesting as each chapter analyse from diffrent perspective and could discuss the same scene but read it differently. The audiobook has diffrent narrator so it's easily to follow and I liked each one.

This book popped up on my library's website. I thought it would be a fun book about the show, that wasn't quite what I got. Instead it was more technical, how the show came about and the impact it had and how now 40 years later it's become a pop culture icon that many people, no matter race or sexual identity feel calls out to them. This is what became interesting to me, more so than what I expected going into it. I loved that these 4 "old" woman hold so many in their hearts for different reasons and how it seems to bring them together. I'm old enough (sadly) to remember the show when it first aired. Have caught clips and reruns along these many years. This book makes me want to go back and watch the whole show again, seeing what I catch now as an adult, versus as a kid, where I'm sure much went over my head.

I’m going to start by saying: this isn’t a book for everyone. If you’re a casual reader hoping for fun takes about The Golden Girls, some behind-the-scenes storytelling, or light nostalgia, this book might feel dense. It reads at times like a text for a film-studies class—scholarly, analytical, digging into history, culture, and media theory. But don’t let that scare you off; the rewards are there, if you’re willing to lean in.

The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai, edited by Taylor Cole Miller and Alfred L. Martin, Jr., is an anthology of essays and interviews that explores the cultural, industrial, and historical impact of The Golden Girls sitcom. It’s not just about what made viewers laugh; it unpacks how the show was produced, its narrative structure, how it engaged with topics like identity, queerness, aging, syndication, audience reception (especially Black, female, and queer fandoms), and its resurgence in the 2020s as a cultural phenomenon.

I consumed the audiobook version, and honestly, it was tough to get into. There are three narrators (Tanya Eby; Diontae Black; Paul Boehmer), but the initial voice you hear—with a very long prologue—set a slow pace that takes time to embrace. Once you get past that, the shifts to the other voices help break things up, bring variety, and make the academic material somewhat more digestible.

The structure of the book—with twelve original chapters plus interviews—means it moves from “big picture” pieces (history of the show’s creation, its network/industrial context, syndication) into more focused topics (flashback episodes, how aging and sexuality are handled, how fandom operates, queerness and drag, etc.). That breadth is one of its strengths—and also one of its weaknesses, depending on how deep you want to go.

In the end, Tales from the Lanai left me with a lot to think about. As someone who watched The Golden Girls as a child, first during its original run and then in syndication, I saw anew how much the show influenced media norms around representation, friendship, aging, humor, even norms of sitcom structure. The book forces you to reassess how the media we consumed (and continue consuming) shapes—and is shaped by—societal expectations, identities, values, and memory.

If you’re willing to sit with analysis, historical detail, and essays rather than just anecdotes, this is an illuminating, sometimes challenging book. It shows The Golden Girls as more than comfort TV: it’s a lens through which to view how television interacts with culture, identity, and time.

I fortunate to receive a complimentary ALC from HighBridge Audio via NetGalley, which gave me the opportunity to share my voluntary thoughts.

How I Rate
Because I mostly read ARCs, I focus on how I think fellow readers with similar tastes will respond. I sometimes round up or down based on pacing, prose, or overall impact, and I try to keep my personal preferences from weighing too heavily.

⭐️ 1 Star – Finished, but not for me; I never DNF ARCs.
⭐️⭐️ 2 Stars – Struggled due to writing, content, or editing issues.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3 Stars – Decent read with untapped potential; recommend with some reservations.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars – Really enjoyed it and would recommend for several reasons.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars – Exceptional; lingers in my mind well after reading. A story I’d gladly revisit.

thank you netgalley for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review 🫶🏼

It might seem from the title that this is a fun bts look into the beloved sitcom and that is what i thought it was going into it. It's actually quite the oposite. While it does provide a bit of nostalgia and laughs here and there, this is more of a raw look behind the curtain and into the more serious and real side of the show. It is an anthology that focuses more on the cultural impact it had on its viewers, primarily its black, queer and female fandoms. As a long time fan of the golden girls, it would not have mattered how light or heavy this was, I was going to devour it regardless.

I watched this show when i was younger and really became obsessed in my teens so l never really gave any of the heavier themes covered much of a thought. I didn’t pick up on a lot of it back then. The show has provided comedic relief throughout my life and has always been a comfort for me. This book really put into perspective just how impactful and progressive the show really was. As an adult I really appreciate how feminist it is. We know that at its core, it’s about female friendship and living/loving life regardless how old you are or what you’ve been through. Now as an adult and with this extra bit of knowledge to go with it, I can also appreciate the topics it touched on at a time when it was considered taboo and made people uncomfy.

Frankly, if you’re a fan of the golden girls in any capacity, I highly recommend this book. If nothing else, it will make you appreciate it a little bit more.

This was a fun and informative look a5 the lasting endurance of The Golden Girls with entry-level academic pieces exploring TGG through different lenses: what did TTG do for the gay community, how did it shift views of motherhood with an empty nest, what role did camp play, how is TGG Black coded, why does it speak to multiple generations, what does it say about both female sexuality and friendship, how has TGG been instrumental in making drag mainstream, what did TGG have to do with grief, etc.

These essays are intermixed with interviews and insights from producers, writers, and others behind the scenes on the show. This book is great for a true fan of the show who wants to dive in deeper, reminisce, but understand the *why* of The Golden Girls as well.

Thank you, NetGalley, for this advanced review copy.

I was provided an ARC for this book and I'm so happy I was. I absolutely love The Golden Girls. It's easily one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite. It always has been.

First things first. This book is very analytical. It focuses on different aspects of the show as a piece of media, the impact it had, and continues to have, on society, how the world shaped certain aspects of the show, etc. As somebody who is interested in keeping up with social issues, this is exactly what I was hoping for when I read about the book. You quickly learn about how intentional the crew was when crafting the Girls when it comes to different societal issues, such as diet culture and views on aging.

There are interviews with the show's crew that really show how much they loved making it. You get a pretty good look behind the curtain of how they made it what it was, including things like the process of how they wrote and edited the scripts and how they approached selling the show during a time when a show about a bunch of old women wasn't exactly what stations wanted.

As a diehard Golden Girls fan, this was a really enjoyable read.

Thank you to HighBridge Audio and Netgalley for the advance listening copy! As always all opinions shared here are 100% my own.

I think I need to start with something a bit personal. When I first moved to the US as an older teen, I spent the first couple years in a haze. While I had growing up speaking English, and so did my family, between our accents and being new immigrants, there were many references and expressions that were new to us. It was intimidating and isolating so much so that I could spend weeks not speaking with anyone outside of my immediate family.

What does that have to do with the book review? Well, one of my favourite memories from then was when mom and I were making breakfast and Golden Girls started playing on TV. Before we knew it, we were absolutely hooked. I will admit half of the references Dorothy and Sophia especially were using went over our heads, but we would sit down after the episode and look up things to learn more about them. So, yes, while we were enjoying the generally cozy vibes and the comedy, that show was crucial for us to feel comfortable as new immigrants to the US.

That's what drew me to this book. I was curious, now that I've been in the US for almost two decades, what did this show mean to everyone else?

"The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai" is a collection of essays and interviews that reveal many behind the scene moments that led to the creation and success of the show as well as reveal the transformative power this show had on people of all backgrounds including audiences from all ages, genders, sexualities and races. In both the interviews and the essays, you are reminded of special moments or lines from the show so, in addition to learning about the show's influence, this would for sure be a great nostalgic trip for Golden Girls fans.

The book was, also, an approachable introduction to the world of TV production and its evolution from the early days of television, through the time when the Golden Girls was being aired for the first time to the present time and the take off of streaming.

Since I was listening to the audiobook, all of the narrators did a great job. I especially enjoyed the delivery of the interviews as they really brought to life the interviewee's reactions.

All in all, if you are a fan of the Golden Girls TV Show or are simply looking to learn more about the world of television, this is a great audiobook to put on.

I want to start off this review by stating a few things:
1. This book reads like research nonfiction versus story-telling nonfiction. If that style of writing isn't for you, this book isn't for you.
2. I received an ALC of this book provided by NetGalley.
3. If you are hoping to learn of any behind-the-scenes drama or conflict, this isn't it.

With that out of the way, I did truly enjoy this audiobook. I liked learning about the impact that The Golden Girls has had on so many generations and so many different demographics. It was really interesting to learn what the show means to the different demographics and how it speaks to so many. I think that really speaks to how great of a show it truly was.

I also must have lived under a rock because I did not realize that there was a resurgence of The Golden Girls in 2020 during the pandemic. I have been watching The Golden Girls for as long as I can remember. It's been something my mom and I have always watched together. The chapter discussing the feminist movement and its impact on motherhood when the show was airing was a great listen. It really made me appreciate the show more.

Overall, this book was very informative. I found it interesting to listen to. I honestly don't know if I would have made it through as quickly if I was reading a physical book. It would definitely read more like a text book. Having it in audiobook format was definitely the way to go for me!

Rating - 3.5/5 ⭐️

Now excuse me while I go watch reruns of The Golden Girls.

Well, I probably should have paid more attention to the name of the publisher, because it turns out that this is a very academic work! The terminology used makes much of this read like a media studies textbook.

It would probably help to have either an interest in TV production, marketing and made social studies OR have watched The Golden Girls enough to appreciate an academic deep dive into the show. Luckily I have indeed watched plenty of The Golden Girls and was sufficiently interested to appreciate the analysis. It did also include interviews between essays and lots of behind-the-scenes info that was indeed very interesting to me. I also appreciated the intersectional lens of the analysis.

I'm giving this four stars because I'm thinking that it's probably closer to a five-star reading experience for people who have to read textbooks but it is marketed as "an accessible anthology" with "chapters" and I think that is pushing it because it very much reads as an academic work with essays to me. Because of the nature of the format, there is some repetition between essays but it's not too noticeable until well past the halfway point. Note that the last couple of essays (especially the second-to-last one) are notably drier.

This would have been harder for me to enjoy reading with my eyes. The audio was well done and made it easier to stay engaged

I grew up watching The Golden Girls. Some of my earliest memories are the sound of the theme song in the afternoons and sitting with my grandmother watch my favorite Florida retirees. She watched a lot of women-led shows from the ’80s and ’90s, but this was the one that made me stop whatever I was doing to join her. As an adult, I’ve rewatched the series more times than I can count.

When I found this book, I was curious about the behind-the-scenes stories the title seems to promise, but it turned out to be much more than that. It’s grounded in real research about women, especially older women, in media. I’ve always felt there was something significant about this show, and this book gives shape to that feeling. It explores why The Golden Girls became such an enduring part of how many of us grew up with television, and why it still feels like a comfort show for so many of us now.

Written through a feminist lens, it introduced me to ways of seeing the show I hadn’t considered. I’ve been watching it since childhood, and now, moving into middle age, I connect with the characters differently than I used to. The clearest message, and maybe the most subversive one, is that women can live full, independent, deeply satisfying lives outside of marriage and motherhood, long after the world has decided they’re done. That still feels rare to hear said out loud. It’s why I’ll be watching this show with my daughter.

Thank you NetGalley and Highbridge Audio for an ALC of this title.

I'm a die-hard Golden Girls fan, so when I came across this audio ARC on Netgalley I knew I had to request it. This book is a collection of essays on the cultural and emotional impact of the Golden Girls on especially women and gay communities, but also Black Americans. The essays managed to put into words the thoughts and feelings I already had about the show with a lot of structure, context and personal anecdotes. I was enjoying myself immensely and I can imagine other fans of the show doing the same.

I specifically liked the interviews in between essays and personally wouldn't have minded more.

The narrators were doing an amazing job as well. When quoting the girls each of the narrators had an uncanny knack of not only copying their accents, but also their inflections. I immediately saw the scene played out in my mind.

Thank you Netgalley and Highbridge Audio for providing me with an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and HighBridge Audio for the opportunity to read and review The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai.

As a lifelong Golden Girls fan, I was thrilled to dive into this title—and it did not disappoint. With my background in media studies, I especially appreciated the way this book explores the show’s cultural impact on marginalized communities, its enduring relevance, and its lasting place in pop culture.
The content is both insightful and accessible, offering more than just a celebration of the series—it provides a thoughtful, contextual analysis that deepens appreciation for the show.
The audio narration is well-paced, clear, and makes the material easy to follow, whether you’re listening for enjoyment or study.

This is a must-read (or listen) for devoted fans as well as anyone interested in media history and cultural studies.

I was very kindly given an e-ARC audiobook of this via Netgalley and Highbridge Audio.

'The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai' is a book of academic essays critically analysing the American sitcom, so do know that before you go in. Though I do think the show is in dire need of an extensive oral history (obviously a little more difficult now that its four leads are no longer with us), but this will get you part of the way there. This is a really fascinating piece of academic work exploring the impact the show has had on numerous communities, on the TV sitcom as a concept, and on pop culture at large. It honestly felt like being back in my TV theory lectures at university. It also made me want to pick up on my re-watch of The Golden Girls - I'm showing it to my Mum for the first time.

'The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai' will be available from September 30th.

I listened to this audiobook in one day—it’s that good. Part TV history, part cultural analysis, this feels like a film studies text in the best way. As someone who grew up watching The Golden Girls with my grandmother, I loved the behind-the-scenes details and how the book highlights the show’s boundary-pushing storylines on immigration, race, and gender identity. A must-read (or listen) for fans who want more than just nostalgia.

Thank you HighBridge | Highbridge Audio, the author and NetGalley for an LRC in return for an honest review

The Golden Girls first aired on British TV in 1986, a year after its US premiere. I was only 14 at the time, but US sitcoms have always appealed to me. I remember watching classics like Cheers, Frasier, Who’s the Boss, Roseanne, Taxi, Mork & Mindy, Diff’rent Strokes, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Soap, Empty Nest and Happy Days. The Golden Girls quickly became one of my favourites, and even though I haven’t re-watched it recently, I still remember it fondly. When I saw this book on NetGalley, I requested it without hesitation.

For casual viewers, this book may feel overly detailed. But if you’re interested in analyzing how The Golden Girls revolutionized television, you’ve hit the jackpot. Lifelong fans and scholars Taylor Cole Miller and Alfred L. Martin Jr. explore in depth the cultural and historical impact of the show.

Narrators Diontae Black and Paul Boehmer gave credible performances alongside the prolific Audie-Winning Tanya Eby, who has narrated over 1000 books.

As a Brit, I was surprised to learn about the resurgence of The Golden Girls during the COVID-19 lockdowns -a largely American phenomenon that passed me by. Even as a teenager watching The Golden Girls on British TV, I remember how relevant it was to contemporary social issues and how pioneering it was in portraying women’s independence. The book also highlights strong LGBTQ+ and race-centered storylines, demonstrating the show’s enduring cultural significance.

One of the landmark storylines covered in the book is the fifth-season episode 72 Hours, which addressed a major health issue of the era: HIV/AIDS. At a time when the disease was still heavily stigmatised, The Golden Girls took a genuine risk in tackling the subject. A comedy - especially one centred on older women - wasn't the obvious place for such serious content. In the episode, Rose anxiously waits to learn if she has contracted HIV through a blood transfusion.

From the book’s perspective, this episode exemplifies how The Golden Girls blended social issues and entertainment, using its platform to engage audiences in public health, stigma, identity, and vulnerability - all while maintaining humour and warmth. The most memorable moment comes when Blanche declares:
“AIDS is not a bad person’s disease, Rose! It is not God punishing people for their sins!”
Behind the scenes, the writers drew on personal experiences as some cast and crew had family members living with AIDS. The show also consulted HIV experts at UCLA to ensure the storyline was both accurate and responsible.

Overall this was an informative and entertaining well written book. I would highly recommended this for fans, scholars or anyone interested in the history of television in general.

Title: The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai
Edited by: Taylor Cole Miller
Narrated by: Paul Boehmer, Tanya Eby, Diontae Blacks
Publisher: Highbridge Audio
Length: Approximately 8 hours and 56 minutes
Source: Review copy from NetGalley. Thank-you!

What is your favorite nostalgic show? I have several including The Golden Girls, Magnum PI, Murder She Wrote, and Little House on the Prairie. Can you tell I was a child of the 1980s?

The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai is a collection of essays that explore the “cultural, industrial, and historical impact of the beloved American sitcom.” Why does the Golden Girls still resonate forty years after it first aired?

My thoughts on this audiobook:
• The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai is a nonfiction book on the show, actors, scenes, and episodes, and the impacts they made on society and culture.

• I listened to the audiobook, and it was fascinating. I enjoyed the different narrators.

• I enjoyed the details on how the show was produced, and its narrative structure (flashbacks, lines, etc.)

• 2025 is the fortieth anniversary of the premiere of The Golden Girls television show. It’s a perfect time to analyze and think about what makes this show so good.

• There has been a resurgence in popularity in The Golden Girls over the last five years. It’s one of my own comfort shows that I like to watch. I didn’t realize it had had a resurgence in popularity as it’s always been popular to me.

• What is “nostalgic” viewing and why is The Golden Girls a part of it? Nostalgic viewing includes episodic shows with storylines that are wrapped up in one episode. Familiarity also fuels nostalgic viewing.

• The Golden Girls gained a new following and resurgence when it started appearing on Hulu during the 2020 lockdown. As a family we started watching Magnum PI during this time for similar reasons.

• I loved recognizing the episodes and scenes in various essays included in this book.

• It is interesting how this comedy was one of Disney’s biggest successes in the 1980s.

• It is also interesting how progressive the show was for the 1980s with gay characters, older women having sex lives, Rose having an Aids scare, etc.

• It was interesting that The Golden Girls premiered on Saturday nights during a block of black programming that included Gimme a Break and 227. I loved these shows as a kid. The Golden Girls appealed to black viewers in the 1980s and was one of the top shows in that demographic.

• There was a warning at the beginning of the book that this is an academic book, not just for casual fans. I am not a Golden Girls academic, but I understood it and enjoyed the details.

Overall, The Golden Girls: Tales from the Lanai Edited by Taylor Cole Miller was a fascinating nonfiction audiobook on the details of one of my favorite nostalgic shows and its place in history. I recommend this for fans of The Golden Girls.

Thanks to NetGalley, Rutgers University Press, and HighBridge Audio for the digital copy of this book; I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Here’s what I find really interesting. I was a kid who NEVER got tired of hanging out with my parents. On Saturday nights, we would watch The Golden Girls, but I dared not talk about it at school because the show was for “old people.” Flash forward 40 years and everyone my age talks about how much they loved the show and have rewatched it ad nauseum. So, that goes to show you that most of my classmates were secretly watching the show with their parents, too. 😉

This book is a deep dive into the show, with scholarly essays about the show and it’s social and cultural impact in the United States over the past 40 years. I’m the sort of person who watches a show for enjoyment without looking for deep and introspective thoughts about it. I mean, if a show is funny, it’s funny. And the Golden Girls was FUNNY. But, I also appreciate the look at WHY the show still works after all these years. The comedy was solid, the actors were seasoned pros, and besides the 1980s wardrobe, could be made today.

There are essays about the LGBTQIA community and how and why they turn to The Golden Girls for positive portrayals of gays. The Black community accepted The Golden Girls, sandwiched among several Black comedy shows on Saturday night. There are many other angles for which the show is examined. I never really researched it before, but I could never tell that Betty White and Bea Arthur didn’t really get along. They were both seasoned pros who, when the cameras started rolling, put aside their differences.

One thing to note. If you are of a certain age like I am, I learned that I am now the same age range as the women on The Golden Girls. No flippin’ way! Then again, it has been 40 years.

Narrated by Diontae Black; Paul Boehmer; Tanya Eby. I’m not sure who was who, but the old, crotchity-sounding man made it a chore whenever he was featured. I have no issue with the other narrators.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook before its publication date of 9/30/25.

I will start out by saying- I am a MAJOR Golden Girls fan.
I grew up watching the show and still watch it often, especially when I’m in need of some familiar faces and comfort. Even my home office is decorated in a Golden Girls theme.
That being said, I already knew a lot of the content about the Golden Girls- how and when they got started, Estelle’s early struggles with Dementia, Bea’s discord with Betty etc.
However, this book was incredibly insightful on the cultural impact the show had.
As I said earlier, I often watch the Golden Girls when I’m in need of comfort and those predictable laughs, quickwitted, comebacks, and friendly faces never disappoint.
Apparently, I am not alone in this need for nostalgic comfort as the Golden Girls soared back to peak popularity during the first year of the Covid pandemic.
As the book points out, comedy and comfort is timeless; and during times of chaos we look for safety and routine.

This book highlights just how timeless the content and topics were, that was addressed on the Golden Girls.
They tackled subjects like dieting and body image. They also brought to light the norms of sexuality in aging women and helped to override the narrative of your stereotypical “Grandma”.
I love that they often featured other topics such as interracial dating, homosexuality, the aging workforce and the AIDS pandemic. The show worked hard to normalize and support these taboo subjects and attempted to diversify by adding people of color and other ethnic backgrounds.

This book was incredibly insightful, and outlined a lot of information that could be a useful resource for anyone looking for information on publication and production trends.

Thank you for reading and thank you for being a friend!

I was a little disappointed with this title, although I stuck with it and found it interesting, but not compelling. I listened to the audio version and wasn’t keen on the make narrator who sounded rather stilted. This isn’t a light read or listen. It’s more like a dissertation for a PhD in The Golden Girls, with significant emphasis on the production values, syndicating, cultural impact and analysis of female, gay and drag viewers. It’s quite hard going at times and whilst I found some of it interesting, there was relatively little about the cast and a lot about the writers. I wasn’t looking for a tell all gossip fest, but this didn’t bring much of the human element into the story.
The programme seems to have an almost timeless and universal appeal. Whilst the fashions have changed, looking at a recent episode, the themes explored of friendship, conflict, love interest etc remain fresh and relevant and the comic exchanges are funny and natural. I guess the tin lies the reason behind this book, the authors have done a good job of getting into the text and understanding what appeals and why. There are examples of exchanges in specific episodes and it’s clear that there’s a sub text to some of the stories and I guess viewers have absorbed this at a subconscious level. This is a title that will probably appeal to die hard fans who want to know every detail, but it’s not a light read.
My thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for a review copy.

Sorry to say this is a DNF for me.
Although I love The Golden Girls, this is just not what I was expecting.

Yes. It does speak of the four… of them... The trials and tribulations they faced while filming in the 80's-90's. How they influenced so many areas of film and TV with their breakout rhetoric regarding... sex, divorce, gays and... so much more!
And, I actually did learn a few things that I didn’t know going in!

BUT...the book to me seems to read like a textbook...NOT like a story. And because of that, it's a DNF for me at 52%.

At some point I might return to read/listen to the rest of it, but for now, I’m done.

Thank you to the author, narrator, publisher and Net Galley for the ALC.

I LOVED the Golden Girls and I still re-watch the re-runs. The show not only taught us about being a friend, but it was a rather progressive story for the time with the topics they addressed. I was really excited about this book to hear more of the behind the scenes and where the ideas came from. I thought I knew what I was getting based on the summary, but I feel like I got a different book.

This book is more of a research report than a story telling nonfiction, and was hard to settled into. Didn't get the behind the scenes dramas or conflicts or relationships like I'd expected.

While I've been a fan since it was on Primetime, I didn't realize the show had following during 2020. (Though, I do remember that it was released around that time, and I know I re-watched the series during the pandemic times.) I also didn't know that the show was followed by so many different generations and demographics. So it was an interesting book, I did learn some things, but it wasn't the book I was hoping for. Maybe that's more my issue than the actual book's issue. I do think the audiobook kept me listening to the story more than had I been reading a printed book.

3.5 stars.

As a lifelong Golden Girls fan, I was eager to dive into Tales from the Lanai, and it didn’t disappoint, though it was a different experience than I expected. Rather than a lighthearted stroll down memory lane, this book takes a more analytical approach, exploring not only the show and its beloved characters, but also the cultural impact each episode had on society and social norms.

I appreciated how thoughtfully the author examined the themes that made The Golden Girls so groundbreaking, from aging and friendship to love, loss, and equality. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the series’ influence and how progressive it truly was for its time.

That said, I found myself missing a bit of the warmth and humor that made the show so special. The focus leaned more academic than nostalgic, which may surprise readers looking for behind-the-scenes stories or cast memories.

Overall, this was an insightful and well-researched tribute that shines a light on why The Golden Girls still resonates today. While not quite the cozy, conversational read I expected, I enjoyed the depth and perspective it brought to a timeless favorite.

The structure of this book is interesting - 12 academic style articles complete with introductions and conclusions, interspersed with interviews from people involved with the Golden Girls - producers, writers, the person who put together the credits. I listened to the audio book, so it seemed weird that these were all read by the narrator, it would have felt fine in the printed book.
The strength of this book is that it reflects the Golden Girls and the show's relationship to various things - cable TV, feminism, celebrity culture, AIDS, homosexuality and so on. It doesn't spend a lot of time going frame by frame through individual episodes. This is proper textual analysis.
I listened to the audiobook, which I think made it more digestible, and also it's weird when the interviews between chapters are read by one narrator. There were two narrators - a man and a woman who did a good job of narrating the text. I think it was a good idea to have different voices, since chapters were written by different people.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you for Netgalley for the ARC of The Golden Girls
by Taylor Cole Miller; Alfred L. Martin, Jr.(audio version)

I watched the Golden Girls as a child during its airing with my Grandmother about one of the few good memories with her.
Later on it became my comfort show, it was on when I needed to tune out , calm down, was overwhelmed, happy or sad.

This books topics cover how the show in the beginning was ahead of its time dealing with heavy topics such as aids, race, queer, ageism, politics and how it showed topics regarding empty nest, teen pregnancy, menopause and issues that were not spoken about opening the up for conversations.

regardless of the fact that this show is 40 years old, and the beloved actresses have passed, the show is still so relevant today

If you want a book about the beloved Golden Girls and behind the scenes stories and the jokes that kept us laughing, do not reach for this book.

If you want a scientific case study on the impact of The Golden Girls across multiple generations and through a pandemic, then by all means read/listen to this book.

This book is way too technical and 'scientific' for me to enjoy it. The narrators sound extremely robotic which did not help the impact of this book on me.

It's informational and I finished it solely to gain any knowledge from tv and scripts, but it's not something that endears me to the show or something that will stick with me.

I love LOVE the Golden Girls and will consume basically anything about the show. I’m also a huge nonfiction fan and one of my favorite things about reading is learning new things. So the combination of this Tales From The Lanai audiobook including the cultural impact of the show written by two higher learning professors made requesting the audio listen a no-brainer.
This audiobook is well done and so interesting. There are so many deep-dives into topics I would have never even known or thought of including examinations of specifics episodes and moments. It’s not an audiobook to rip through quickly as it incudes a lot of dense analytics but it was a great experience to go back to over time when I had a GG learning itch.

Scholarly approach to a famous TV series. You won't find fun facts or gossip (well, some yes), but rather interesting reflections about The Golden Girls as a cultural product of the 1980s, how it was received at the time, how it has been seen by LGBTQ+ and Black audiences, how it depicted older women, why it was so transgressive and yet so family-friendly... Not for everyone, but extremely interesting.
