A joint review with me and my 3-year old niece Emma:
My take: The title seems to say it all - the basic premise of Look at Bump being to look at Bump, a young anthropomorphic elephant who obtains items and performs routine tasks - ah but WAIT! Who's this "Birdie" character? This bluebird-ish creature is perhaps a friend of Bump, but who's to say. They never interact. Birdie hovers (without flying mind you, so I hesitate to call him a bird) nearby and statements are made mostly regarding his whereabouts. It's all quite pointless! The book includes illustrations, which further clarify the already simple and direct text. However, one perplexing detail is never cleared up. Why is Bump's head bandaged? It's just two cross-wise bandaids adhered to the crown of his head, but why they're there is never explained. Never. Is there an informative prequel? Perhaps a sequel with flashbacks? Honestly. It's an unfair tease.
Emma's thoughts: Birdie is the preferred character over Bump. She knows what an elephant is, but wasn't sure what Bump was. Not her favorite book, but overall it was worth a second run through, and it will no doubt be read again...but that's not saying much, because she wants to reread the same damn books all the time.
