3.5 stars. I’m awarding plenty of brownie points for such a novel idea. And I’m a mark for anything involving unique ideas that deal with horror being intertwined with mental health. Plenty of mind screws, unsettling hallucinations, and a constantly evolving plot. Where this sort of lost me was that the story felt like several different styles jammed together. The beginning was a slow-paced information dump to bring the reader up to speed on multiple plot points, almost like a character study. The middle portion was psychological thriller all the way. The remaining portion became this creature-feature, theatrical, action-packed extravaganza. And there’s nothing wrong with blending styles and genres, but it must be done smoothly to work. Here, there were just a bunch of abrupt pivots and even possibly too many plot points introduced. I feel like if the author focused strictly on the psychological horror and kept a consistency throughout with the pacing, this would have gone from good to great. Still a good read, but just tried to stick too much into a single book.

“A fiery little number that will burn the back of its reader’s throats, redden their cheeks and leave them coughing and spluttering, Inigo Mort’s second novella is precise, pacy and pretty damn good. It packs a punch. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect going in, only familiar with Mort as a wonderful reader and reviewer, not as a writer, but I was not disappointed by this little book, which by the way, has quite a lot of plot packed into it. A nuanced commentary upon trauma and coping mechanisms, “Fly On The Wall,” is sharp and confident, packed with action, twists and more heat than a scotch bonnet- I read it compulsively in a single sitting. Out and available for free on kindle unlimited, this one is like Netflix’s “Apple Cider Vinegar,” meets T.J Payne’s “Intercepts,” with shades of LaRocca, and is a nifty, if not sweaty, way to spend a rainy afternoon.

We follow Dylan Pastor, a documentarian yet to take off, who has caught wind of grifter turned guru Owen Sharkey and his novel rehab facility. Sharkey treats unresolved traumas, facilitates the inner-healing of the child, using psychogenic pain, triggered by chilli peppers. The entire operation reeks of a scam to Dylan, who, not lacking unresolved traumas, and with the unwitting encouragement of loved ones, checks himself in, recording the whole time through his prosthetic eye. What he doesn’t expect is for Sharkey’s fiery regimen to work… with shocking revelations bubbling to the surface, leading Dylan to question everything he knows to be true, in addition to his sanity…….”

The amount of research that Inigo had to have done, for the science and terminology in this book, to be as specific and spot on as it is... must've been a hell of a lot.

As a result what we are left with is a story that leaves you gripped. The knowledge and understanding of trauma is obvious throughout and it is such a clever and unique way to discuss the impact that childhood trauma has on the brain and the lasting effects it has on one's memory.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to see what Inigo comes up with next.

Earlier this year Inigo Mort - a highlight of the horror community known for reviewing and rambling about horror books, and who I've had the pleasure of meeting a couple of times now and always had super enjoyable and engaging conversations with all about horror - released their debut book The Artist , which I obviously had to pick up and which I obviously enjoyed. Not too long ago, Mort released their second novella Fly on the Wall, which I obviously had to pick up and I obviously had to squeeze in before the year was through.

I loved the concept and set-up here - Dylan, a documentary filmmaker, goes undercover to an experimental rehab facility that attempts to cure trauma through the use of chillies, but Dylan is harbouring his own traumatic history. I was riveted by the way Mort gradually peeled back the layers of Dylan's past, revealing what happened during a 'lost weekend' from his youth that left him seriously injured. There's a seediness surrounding these events that Mort captures incredibly, with some sequences that left me feeling genuinely uncomfortable. I also enjoyed the moments we get at the rehab facility as Dylan meets his fellow attendees and the powers in charge whilst having to make sure his filming efforts remain unnoticed, and the use of chillies as a catalyst is inspired. Trauma is a weighty topic, but Mort handles it with sensitivity.

About midway through, the book takes a sharp tonal turn that didn’t entirely land for me. A character arrives at the rehab facility in a way that felt more like a plot necessity than an organic development, and while I did enjoy the unexpected direction the story takes, I found myself missing the mystery and tension of the first half. Fly on the Wall very much feels like a book of two halves, and although I can appreciate both halves, they are very different and I couldn't help but have a preference.

There's a fun little nod to The Artist and Mort once again shows an impressive amount of creativity, with a strong grasp of character and suspense whilst leaning into some classic monstrous tropes. The climax has a few convenient moments, but overall Fly on the Wall is a good demonstration of Mort's range. I'll be eagerly anticipating whatever Mort releases next.

Inigo has once again demonstrated his mastery of horror with the release of his second novella, "Fly on the Wall." This gripping tale intricately weaves a haunting narrative that delves deep into the complexities of childhood trauma, exploring the emotional labyrinth we navigate while facing our darkest fears.

The story follows Dylan, a documentary filmmaker who enters an elite rehab clinic under the guise of recovery. Led by a charismatic self-help guru, Dylan hopes to confront the deeply buried wounds of his past — but he suspects the operation might be a scam. As he prepares to document his experience with hidden cameras, the unexpected happens: the treatment begins to work, and long-dormant memories surface, forcing Dylan to confront not only his past but his own sanity.

Inigo's portrayal of the recovery process is both haunting and enlightening. As someone who has grappled with childhood trauma, I found the exploration of burying painful memories particularly resonant. The story captures the struggle of boxing away our hurts, only for them to claw their way back into our consciousness at inopportune moments. Inigo strikes a perfect balance between the emotional and psychological aspects of trauma, delivering a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is chilling.

What stands out in "Fly on the Wall" is Inigo’s ability to blend psychological insights with horror elements seamlessly. The haunted undertones serve as a powerful metaphor for the repressed fears we carry. Just when you think you know where the story is headed, Inigo reveals deeper layers that keep you questioning everything, right alongside Dylan.

In conclusion, "Fly on the Wall" is a stunning exploration of recovery cloaked in horror. Inigo has crafted a narrative that not only entertains but also enlightens, offering a unique perspective on the complexities of facing our past. Bravo, Inigo — you’ve delivered yet another compelling read that is both comforting and uncomfortably close to my heart.

Dylan heads to Camp Valour to spy on their methods and record everything they're up to under the guise of trying to help people be rid of their trauma. He knew there wasn't something up with this place, but when he end up on a course of 'Agent C' life would never be the same again for him.
Camp Valour claims to rid your trauma by use of an ingredient found in chillies and claims it reveals hide trauma in your brain that you may have covered uo/forced yourself to forget, and says by doing so you will heal.
But they forget to mention the secret ingredient that absolutely made not only the characters skin crawl, but also my own.
I loved this story so much and it continuously had me guessing as to what would happen next.
What I absolutely did not expect was the 'wtf' ending that had me gobsmacked!
This book should be on every horror readers TBR.

Fly on the wall is about past trauma, manifesting in a visual way through the medium of horror. The horror visuals in this book are truly disturbing

This is the second book now I have read by Inigo Mort and two things are clear their descriptive visuals really paint a clear (horrifically clear at times) picture of what's happening to the characters but also the message laced within the words they want to tell.

I have recommended The Artist a number of times already as a great horror book and this novella will be no different. There is also a little tie in I think I noticed to the artist in this book! Very subtle though.

If you love the horror space this short 150 page novella will be your cup of tea give it a read.

Documentary filmmaker Dylan Pastor, signs himself up for a clinical trial at Camp Valour. A trauma therapy rehab centre that specialises in healing past traumas through psychosomatic pain caused by chilli peppers. Dylan doesn’t believe a word of it, so he sets off with his hidden camera and his own childhood issues to find the truth behind this facility and its potential whack job guru, Owen Sharkey. However, once Dylan finds that this trial may actually be the medicine to solve all he has been through, everything he knows is flipped upside down and he starts to question everything around him whilst clinging on to his sanity as best he can.

This fiery and charismatic novella has to be one of the most unique stories I have yet to read. Inigo explores trauma and mental health in a way that has never been done before, and has left me gasping for water from this fervid tale. This book is as whacky as the self help guru that’s running the facility, but somehow manages to still incite a fear into its readers by grabbing on to the very tangible feeling of your own mental strife. This book explores how past trauma can shape you as an individual and it does this in a gloriously gooey, peppery, and volatile way. It encourages you to grab onto what you’re feeling instead of pushing it somewhere you can ignore, and I really loved that.

In regard to the actual horror side of things, this really packed a punch. Teeming with flies and gore, this one will make your skin crawl. I often felt like I had an itch that I could just not scratch with the vivid imagery within this book and I have l left this with a new found trepidation surrounding chilli’s - so if my meals are little bland for a while then I’m just trying to keep myself safe, okay?

Before reading Inigo’s work, I have been a huge fan of their page for a while because they champion the horror genre so beautifully, and this novella only furthers that. They recently spoke about how horror can be made to ‘heal’ and Fly On The Wall certainly aids this point. This was a perfect example of how this wonderful genre can be so exploratory in the taboo or darker themes, whilst still being so wildly creative.

Make sure to wash your hands when you’re finished with this, because it certainly comes with a sting if you’re not too careful.

“There is a deep pain in all of us. We spend our lives trying to contain it, to keep it at bay, by offering it sacrifices; work, sex, drugs… anything that creates a barrier between us and it. Some of us have pain living in us that is too powerful for us to handle alone. So we feed it. And like anything else, once you feed it, it grows; it wants more.”

WOW. This book was absolutely incredible! Inigo Mort is a new indie author on the scene that has such fresh and innovative ideas when it comes to Horror! It's easy to get locked and lost into his writing from the very beginning. I highly recommend this one to my fellow horror readers!

Fly On The Wall follows Dylan. Dylan is on his way to a facility that supposedly cures childhood trauma. He isn't there for a cure though, he is there to capture his experience there on film. He is a filmmaker. He has a rather convenient way to hide his camera too. I won't be giving that little detail away though. You just have to read and find out for yourself. Once Dylan is inside the facility he starts to realize that maybe this treatment does work once he starts to have some deeply buried memories come to surface in his dreams. From here on the story really takes off and the reader is in for one heck of a ride!

When Inigo announced the release of this book I was already sold. I loved "The Artist" so I was very excited to see what he could come up with next!

I can very happily and easily say that Inigo did not disappoint at all. The story was gripping and impossible to put down. I certainly did not expect to learn what we did about the rehab clinic and this made the concept of the story even more intriguing to me.

The way Inigo writes is just beautiful. It flows so naturally that it can't help but captivate you. He pulls you through the story making you feel every single one of Dylan's emotions. My heart was pounding at points as I could just feel the anxiety seeping through the pages. I also throughly enjoyed the gory parts of the story.

For a book of 125 pages, it packs a real punch and will most definitely have a big impact on you. The afterword was also a really nice thing to read and just highlights the kind of person Inigo is.

I encourage everyone to take the time to read this book, you will not regret it!

A trauma and addiction clinic that can cure you with the most hottest chillies on the planet? Could it really be true? Can 'Agent C' cure you of all your demons? Dylan checks himself in under the guise of a workaholic recovery programme to document the whole thing. But what he doesn't expect to unearth is the shocking, messed up truth that no one wants to uncover.

This crazy story had me thinking all sorts. What was Dylan going to find at a rehab clinic, and how can chillies really cure pain? Is it true? Can they really cure pain? I'm not sure I'm willing to find out, as much as I love a bit of spice in my life. But one thing is for sure - you need to read this book!

Inigo has done it again with another freaky and awesome horror novella. I loved his first The Artist and I love this just as much; maybe more.

Dylan Pastor is a documentary maker who heads out to an elite rehab clinic that promises to cure even the deepest hidden traumas, he’s convinced it’s a scam and comes armed with a hidden camera determined to expose what’s really going on.

This is going to leave you with unforgettable visuals and it’ll leave your skin crawling. It’s a really enjoyable story perfect for spooky season that you could finish in one sitting. Make it a double bill with The Artist!

Fly on the Wall is a strange, haunting, and beautiful little novella that completely surprised me. Inigo Mort writes with this lyrical, unsettling style that makes you feel like you’ve been dropped into a dream you’re not quite sure you’ll wake up from. It’s surreal horror at its finest, intimate, eerie, and thought-provoking.

What really stayed with me is how it explores the way our past trauma shapes us without defining us. Beneath the disquieting imagery and psychological unease, there’s something profoundly human here. This is exactly the kind of indie gem I love to stumble across.

To be completely frank, i thought this needed work.. No just kidding. I was so excited when the author announced about writing a second book. What Inigo Mort brought to this book was satisfyingly disturbing, the amount of research that must’ve been done. It felt like a science experiment gone totally wrong for the characters.. You expect to go to a retreat/rehab for trauma. And come out with more trauma then what your bargaining for.
This was so well written and it had me terrified. My review does not give this book justice. Way to go with this creative work of horror! I loved it!

Well, once again Inigo has written a lovable and unputdownable horror novella. As someone who loves spicy food I was intrigued by the spicy pepper treatment for addicts. I also love how it was about mental health and past memories, no matter how traumatizing they can be. I liked the cool hidden camera element, as well. I loved Inigo's debut novella, The Artist and I highly recommend this one, too.

Hello my lovelies!

Thank you for reading Fly On The Wall, my second novella. It's a fun one, but I hope you also chime with the message: we've all got stuff in our past that make us hurt, and as much as we wish they didn't happen, you are who you are in spite of these challenges, not because of them!

All my love.

This novella starts and the writing quickly introduces a small feeling of dread that evolves into horror and finally transforms into shock with the finale. Mort does a fantastic job of showing, not telling, with his words. I was sucked in from the first page and only looked up when my jaw dropped on the final page. Excellent read, effortlessly bingeable.
