M Is for Mayflower: A Massachusetts Alphabet

Rate this book
"M is for Mayflower" is a wonderful addition to our series of state alphabet books, as Raven's sparkling verse and illuminating expository text are matched perfectly with Jeannie Brett's bright illustrations.

This pictorial celebrates the treasures of the Bay State, and educates as it entertains elementary-aged New Englanders. Older readers will appreciate the guided tour through Massachusetts' history, and will learn more about their unique home. Where else could you find John F. Kennedy, Emily Dickinson, and Walden's Henry David Thoreau sharing the spotlight with Roxbury Puddingstones and the Quabbin Reservoir? Only in "M is for Mayflower."

I requested this title through inter library loan based on the title “ M is for Mayflower” thinking it would be about the Mayflower ship. However, it is a abc about Massachusetts which was fine. The contents prompted me to remember two different trips, one to Cape Cod and one to the Boston and Gloucester areas. There is a rhyme for each letter for a significant historic happening, location, or person of Massachusetts as well as sidebars with more information for each letter. Would recommend for grades 4 through adult.

Spelling bee word:

Blackstone River Valley’s Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamaug has the longest name of any lake in the country. It is now called Webster Lake for short. Its original Nipmuc Indian name means: “You fish on your side of the lake, I fish on my side, and no one fishes in the middle.”

M is for Mayflower was full of cute rhymes that taught about Massachusetts' amazing history. I particularly found "Z" to be quite clever. We enjoyed this book very much!
