Sherlock Holmes as a sassy vampire and John Watson as a grumpy werewolf. A fun little spinoff to the dynamic detective duo.

Vampire detective Serena Holmes works alone—by choice and necessity. Brilliant, unyielding, and haunted by centuries of secrets, she’s the last person who wants a partner. But when the supernatural world’s balance is threatened, the council assigns her Rhys Watson, a stubborn, rule-bound werewolf with a knack for getting under her skin.

When a string of supernatural murders points to Moriarty, a rogue network of creatures defying the laws of their world, Serena’s darkest secrets resurface—along with a dangerous figure from her past. As the lines between their case and her history blur, Rhys becomes her unlikely anchor, even as their growing connection threatens to ignite.

As their investigation deepens, the pull between them grows harder to deny—something more than attraction, more than circumstance. It’s a bond written by fate, one neither of them can escape, no matter how hard they fight it. The lines between duty and desire blur, and Serena must confront whether trusting Rhys—and what they could become—is worth risking everything.

Book Summary:
Told in first-person with a dual POV, this story kept me engaged throughout. I was genuinely invested in solving the case, uncovering the truth behind the enemy, and learning more about the characters’ pasts.

Vampire detective Serena Holmes, known for bending the rules to get results, is paired with Rhys Watson, a by-the-book Lycan. Together, they investigate a string of supernatural murders that may be tied to someone from Serena’s past. As old secrets begin to resurface, Rhys becomes an unexpected source of support, and a reluctant bond forms between them.

With the clock ticking, Serena must not only solve the case but also decide whether she can truly trust Rhys—and whether lowering her guard might finally set her free.

Thoughts:
Reviewing this felt a little up and down for me, for I liked it, but also couldn't ignore the grating errors. Things below may be seen as subtle spoilers, but I do not think they add much to the overall book. They're things you find out pretty fast, or do not matter.
I'd probably give it more of a 2.5/3⭐ unless the content was revised and Edited.

The story layout felt all over the place.
⇢ I struggled to keep track of the timeline. At first it seemed to take place within a week, and then suddenly shifted to “over the past few weeks,” which threw me off. The pacing and sense of time weren’t very clear.

The magic system needed more explanation. It was mentioned several times but never clearly defined.
⇢ Serena went through so many chapters without any real reference to having magic herself outside of being a Vampire — and then suddenly around chapter 24, there was a line saying “Magic snapped at my fingertips, hot and violent.” I remember pausing and thinking, “What magic? What is she using besides strength and combat ability?” It came completely out of nowhere.
Later, the book mentioned that a collar used on her made her magic vanish, which only added to my confusion — vanish what magic? I still couldn’t tell what her actual abilities were supposed to be. Neither did she really use these apparent abilities.
⇢ The only characters whose magic felt clear or fitting were Moriarty (since he’s a demon) and Merlin (a warlock). Considering how many supernatural beings exist in this world, a bit more detail would have really helped. An example of how unclear the system was: Moriarty’s “magic collar,” which was said to suppress Serena’s power, could have been significant during the final clash, but it was never mentioned again — even though it was supposedly still on her, just...forgotten.

There were quite a few inconsistencies.
⇢ Some chapters felt like they’d been changed midway and details were forgotten. For instance, things would happen twice — or a character like Merlin would be mentioned leaving, even though he’d never appeared in that chapter. Certain conversations (like those about Serena's past with Moriarty) were repeated, and small continuity issues (about food, character locations, etc.) made it confusing. The inconsistencies bothered me a lot.

Some character choices didn’t make much sense.
⇢ Serena purposely going off alone (twice) despite knowing the enemy could appear at any moment, felt like a forced way to make her vulnerable. She didn’t strike me as foolish enough to think it wouldn’t happen. Her fierce independence also clashed with how quickly she became attached to her “new family” of coworkers. That shift happened very fast — within just a few days — especially considering how reluctant she’d been to even work with them beforehand.
⇢ Rhys, meanwhile, sometimes faded into the background, often just standing around or feeling secondary to the plot. I would’ve loved to know more about his past. There was a brief mention of him “reeking of cheap liquor,” and when Serena teased him about whether it was due to “too many tours, otherworldly conflicts, family feuds, or a broken heart?” it clearly struck a nerve. That moment made him angry, but wasn't ever elaborated on. It could’ve been a great thread to explore further, offering insight into his background and emotional depth.
⇢ Merlin felt unnecessary. I thought he would play a bigger role, but instead, he drifted in and out with little purpose. By the end, he wasn’t mentioned at all, and I genuinely had no idea what happened to him, or why he was brought into the story in the first place, other than to give extra background to Serena.
⚬──────────✧──────────⚬
Characters:
● Serena: A well-known detective who isn’t afraid to cross lines to solve a case. She values independence and control, but beneath her strong exterior lies a deeply wounded woman — one who has suffered manipulation and finds it hard to trust again.

● Rhys: A rule-abiding captain who suddenly finds himself partnered with Serena’s chaos. Despite their clashing styles, he’s consistently supportive and protective from the get-go, even when he disagrees with her methods. Rhys is the anchor that Serena needed. He has a commanding presence during intimate moments, though his backstory could’ve been expanded.

● Their dynamic: Serena and Rhys have excellent chemistry from the start. Their banter is witty all throughout the book, the tension delicious, and their connection feels genuine — a mix of care, healing, vulnerability, and desire. Some of their moments together are truly beautiful, and their relationship was one of my favorite aspects of the book.

● Creatures: The supernatural beings of the world seemed REALLY interesting, and I'd have loved an expansion on them and how the world fully works etc. Different planes were noted, but the beings also seemed to live amongst humans. Did humans actually know about them or were they oblivious to it all, despite the happenings?
⚬──────────✧──────────⚬
Enemy:
● The main enemy was actually quite enjoyable. Based on how he was first described, he was just as charismatic and manipulative as I thought and hoped he would be. Still, I would have liked to see more of a power struggle between him and the main group — the resolution felt a bit too easy, ending with a mix of rage and love.
It was BRIEFLY said that Moriarty was a demon of the Pride lineage, which explained his obsession with letting Serena go, but it would have been nice to know that earlier, and see more of him in action, not only when it came to Serena, considering his syndicate seemed a huge part of the story.

● The revenant plotline didn't fully make sense to me. It seemed linked to the main enemy, and then it didn't, and then it was again. Not sure if this was related to the editing issues.
⚬──────────✧──────────⚬
Spice:.
● I believe there are six official spice scenes, So lots to enjoy.
They have their exciting moments, and I loved to see Rhys shine more with his dominant side. Here, he is confident, and a dirty talker who balances his dominance with care. It was a nice change of pace for him. His aftercare moments and emotional support toward Serena were lovely touches.

● I love a good smut book, but unfortunately I found the intimate scenes became repetitive in nature, often following the same structure, emotion, and they almost even happened in the same order. There's nothing wrong with people sticking to what they like when it fits the characters, and I've seen it done in many books, but when you have to read it over and over, it loses its spark and I found myself more disinterested in the scenes the further along I got. The chase scene did perk it up just a bit, though.

● I did like that each intimate moment ended with soft, open communication. There was a mix of real vulnerability, and trust building between the two main characters, but again, these scenes were often repetitive.

Some of these intimate scenes, however, felt slightly out of place given the emotional tone of the surrounding moments.
⚬──────────✧──────────⚬
Overall:
● The book has SO much potential. The characters are fun, the dynamic between main characters compelling, and the world is rich with possibility. It just needs a bit of refinement; clearer editing, stronger consistency, and more worldbuilding for it all to make sense and flow smoothly.

🎧ALC review of Fangs and Fur
Thank you to Adler Audios for this ALC!

This story was a fun paranormal retelling of Sherlock Holmes wherein Serena, a vampire is Sherlock, and Rhys, a werewolf is Holmes. These two are paired together by fate and life sure did have some plans for these two.

Serena is the strong, sassy but mostly guarded FMC. The banter between these two kept me never wanting to hit pause on the audiobook. She was the best part of the story. I love a badass FMC. She endured a traumatic past and used it as motivation to help others. I really enjoyed this story line.

The narrators were perfect for the story in my opinion, I love when the performances convey the emotions of the story and that’s exactly what happened with this audiobook!
As far as the story, I wish we had more background on Rhys, thier banter kept me wanting to know more about him.
I did enjoy the suspenseful plot, and thought it ended the way it should have.

This is a fun paranormal romance retelling with a dash of spicy spice! I would add to your TBR if you’re looking for something different and fun that’ll keep you from never wanting it to end.

Thanks again to Adler Audios for this ALC!

3.5⭐ 2.75🌶️

It was a good read with a very good premise. There were some elements that I really liked and others less so (especially elements that I would have liked to see, that I found missing).

What I liked:
- the bound was acknowledged early and loved how the MMC was patient, letting the FMC making the moves
- how the MMC supported the FMC, didn't try to solve the problem for her and didn't try to change her
- realistic trauma responses

What was missing:
- the backstory of the MMC, what was his past? we know a lot about the FMC, but not about him
- the timeline confused me at times. I thought the events were happening in the same week, so a matter of days, and not over several weeks.
- sometimes, I founded the MMC a bit passive. I wanted him to have a more active role in the investigation
- need more details of the knotting, I want it all, not just to be mentioned 😭

If you want an easy read, a paranormal retelling of Sherlock Holmes with vampires and werewolves vibes and a strong/chaotic FMC, this book might be for you!

I have never read a Holmes and Watson retelling but this one was fantastic. I was not sure about how the story would go but it was fantastic. Serena is your tough as nails vampire with a traumatic past. She likes to work alone and does not want help. Rhys is our werewolf who is assigned to be Serena's partner. Little do they realize that they are fated mates. Serena tries so hard to not only resist Rhys but to deny that they not only have a pull to each other but that they should also have a bond. They have great banter between them. As hard as Serena tries to push Rhys buttons he is unfazed by her. He shows up for her every single time. She is carrying a lot of baggage and secrets. While working on a case she gets way to close to her past trauma. Luckily for her, she has an alpha male to be by her side and help her through it. Rose did a fantastic job of making characters that were not only lovable but also relatable. This story kept me engaged and I devoured it.

Serena & Rhys - A Paranormal Sherlock Holmes Retelling
This story, set in Portland Oregon, is a human world filled with the supernatural hidden in the shadows.
Unexpected circumstances brings two individuals together, leaving thém smoldering in attraction neither wants to get entangled in. As the plot thickens, thé past resurfacing with a vengeance, coming for a claim.
This is a wonderfully written plot filled with a slow burning, stab by banter filled situationship, between a grump and a sharp Sun-ray, not quite sunshine. He’s a walking green flag and once they made a choice, it’s a sharp turn to the backyard for some hunting games, and some rather horrid touch and die vibes flying both ways.

This retelling of Sherlock and Watson is filled with spice, fangs, fur, and a little blood. I really enjoyed the supernatural twist and how detailed the world building was. It added an extra layer to the murder mystery and made the story even more engaging.

Serena and Rhys are dynamic as the main characters. Their banter runs the full spectrum, from bickering to lust filled innuendos. There is also a deeper emotional layer as Serena is forced to confront her past, with Rhys there to support her through it.

The audio version of this book is spot on. Molly Briar does an amazing job bringing out the nuances of Serena’s character, and the level of sass she delivers had me laughing out loud. PG Hammock brings both grit and depth to Rhys. And together they make a truly dynamic duo.

I got to read this as an advanced reader’s copy. I liked the take on a female vampire Sherlock Holmes and her werewolf Holmes. There was good banter in this opposites-attract story and the love story is heartwarming. There are darker themes and a darker feeling to some of this story, but they are not really in the evolving relationship between the two main characters, even though it is a part of at least her past, which is catching up to her.
Unfortunately, some parts seem a bit rushed over for me, I missed parts of the story that were not there in some skips in the story, and characters like Merlin that just vanished somewhere in the book.

Duet narration - Molly Briar & PG Hammock

Great narration. I always enjoy Mollys narration, PG Hammock is new to me. I really liked his voice and performance.

Serena and Rhys are a great couple to read. Rhys is aware and open to the bond early in the story but he is patient waiting for Serena to get there with him.

Sherlock Holmes meets paranormal. I enjoyed the writing style, the dark romcom vibes is a favorite style of mine. It’s a little dark but fun instead of so heavy like the traditional darker romances.

I wish I could've given more stars!!!!! The back and forth banter in the book between Watson and Holmes was hilarious!!! The crap that Moriarty put Serena through really emotionally pulled me in. I loved that Serena found Rhys, even though he was shoved at her. I also loved that Serena found a team of like minded and experienced individuals to help her and Rhys take down Moriarty. Molly Briar and PG Hammock did an amazing job bringing this book to life. Would love for this book to have future books added to it!!!!!

The banter from the minute they meet had me laughing and smiling like a fool. The author does a fantastic job of sucking you right into the story keeping you interested. There are some very dark underlying themes so make sure to check the triggers. If you like dark stories with forced proximity, vampire x lycan, murder mystery, insta sparks, morally grey FMC, burn the world for her MMC, and the perfect amount of spice, then check this story out!

Fangs and Fur by Rose Chase was amazing! This is a supernatural retelling of Sherlock Holmes and Watson with multiple twists. The mc’s are Serena and Rhys and the banter and one liners between them is absolutely wonderful. You have a guy who burned the world down for the girl and a girl is definitely morally grey and he loves her for it. This book was absolutely wonderful.

I received an advanced review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh wow! I had an ALC of the audio from the production company Adler Audio and I cannot thank them enough for this delight for my ears. I also can't say much about the book because it would give away the mystery. But I can tell you the story by Rose Chase is fantastic and Molly Briar and PG Hammock have amazing chemistry as Holmes and Watson respectively.

The action and the mystery to this story had me on the edge of my seat! The watson and holmes aspect to it is interesting. I love Rhys and Serena's banter. They had me hoping they would get together. Molly Briar and PG Hammock have amazing chemistry. I could feel the shift from competitive partners to lovers. Serena didn't want to let Rhys know about her past, but Rhys found a way to burrow himself into her heart. He makes her stronger and wants her as his equal. It's a great story of love, found family, and finding your inner strength.

Fangs and Fur by Rose Chase

Duet narration by Molly Briar and PG Hammock. I love duet narration and these two did a great job at being the emotion and the banter to life!

Sherlock Holmes but make it paranormal!
Dual POV, forced proximity, found family, lycan and vampire, mine, fated bond, good girl, FMC (Serena Holmes) is a sassy and brilliant vampire, MMC (Rhys Watson) is a werewolf assigned to be her bodyguard/keeper, detectives/crime story, extremely traumatic backstory, aftercare, fast burn, banter, no third act breakup, green flag but grumpy MMC
Please check the content warnings, they include SA (not by main character)

Serena is a brilliant detective, but also tends to be a bit of a rule breaker. Rhys is paired with her to both protect her and keep an eye on her, which annoys her to no end. I thought this was a fun, new take on Sherlock Holmes! I liked the main characters and the expanded team they ended up with later. I think for now this is a standalone, but with the found family team pulled together could definitely turn into a series. I do with the magic system had been explained a little more, so maybe if there are more books that will come. There were a few places where phrases were repeated close together that took me out of the moment, but over all this was a good time!
