The Undying Immortal System #2

Water Flower: A LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Life is the teacher. Death is the lesson. An undying cultivator is the result.

Su Fang’s path of cultivation is a journey of countless deaths. As each new life pulls back the veil that covers the Nine Rivers Continent, he discovers both hidden truths and the chains that bind him.

The Nine Rivers Continent is under the thumb of a godlike entity willing to do whatever it takes to push society forward, and nothing fuels progress like conflict. To get his first true competitive advantage, Su Fang begins his hunt for a spatial fire seed, a treasure that will grant him the power to create a world of his own—a sanctuary beyond the reach of the Heavenly Dao. Fortunately—or perhaps unfortunately—he has as many attempts as he needs to succeed.

A cultivator who defies death has only one seek out a life worth living.

boring

The protagonist gets obsessed with people and yes mental effects from cultivation. But he never changes and he ignores obvious red flags. The character Mai he kept saying he was afraid but never actually dropped that walking disaster. The character repeats bad decisions. Never moves away. Boring and repetitive. Feeling guilt and debts to people who keep screwing him over?

awesome

It had a good start, a lengthy middle that felt like nothing happened, and an awesome last 20% of the book, that made the events in the lengthy middle awesome.
I like how Su Fang's thought process was laid out for us as he makes decisions and the realizations he comes to are too good to read.
Now I have to wait for the 3rd book in the series.

I loved this series and I can’t wait for book 3! I really enjoy these types of books the slow grind of it all really drags me in. I really hope the author writes fast lol!

I mean I read it. But come on this dude is on life 62 or so and in those hundreds of years, is still a virgin. like I am not even asking for spice, just take one life, play 50 first dates if you have to and settle down for a few years. The one girl you do have along you drove her insane! Come on man!
Regression fail.

Are you kidding me? The same bit? Not only is he once again sure to pick the most tedious option at every crossroad, he's still an absolute bonehead and makes the same mistakes over and over, just like in the first book. A reincarnator who never learns one thing. It's not ironic, it's just frustrating. Oh but now he really has learned his lesson? Yeah, you said that at the end of the last book as well. Honestly there's potential here, it's a good setup, but the frustration is just too much. Two books is enough. I couldn't take a third like this, I'd have an aneurysm.

Honestly I don't know

It feels like it's pretty well written. Maybe the reason I feel the way I do is because I don't see the overall point of where the series is supposed to go. Is it really just about improving the world he's on. Is it him improving himself. Is there supposed to be an element of romance with a happily ever ending at the end. I'm not exactly sure and I don't know that the author knows either. My understanding is that there are two types of writers. Basically an outliner and a discovery writer, but even it outliner to a certain degree is a discovery writer. That's just to say that at the end of the day there's a question mark and I got no answers. There is a decision that the author makes with one of the characters in this book that I don't like at all. I would be more forgiving if I could understand where we're going with this. Even if it's only hints. But either they're too vague or I'm too dense. Now I'm trying not to penalize anybody if the story does it match my personal preferences. That's why I gave it the rating I did. I honestly believe that the writing is solid. I just don't know that I can exactly recommend it. I mean there's nothing exactly bad about it but then again there's nothing that really stands out to me at least. I don't know if I'm coming back for a book three. I think it was more or less in the same position at the ending of book 1, but book ones tend to be a shaky endeavor sometimes even from tried and true authors. I think ultimately that's what got me back here to go for another book.

mission creep

Another reset, another path to travel for a few centuries, this time in pursuit of…luggage space: he wants to increase his carry-on capacity.

Granted, it’s a magical type of luggage capable of bringing anything stored in it across time and space, allowing Fang to plunder timelines and maybe ultimately disappear into his own navel in a pocket universe, but the price…

If the System is resetting the timeline, and nothing matters, that’s one thing, if he’s spinning off into another universe exactly like the one he left, while the previous universe continues on, that’s another moral quandary.

And what about souls? Are the people he meets new souls with memories, or are they one soul experiencing every cycle and forgetting it every reset? Are there fifty copies of Mei, fifty souls with different experiences starting when Fang awakens at his reset point, or does he drag everyone’s soul back in time with him, too?

Again this book surprises with the depth of its world building and character development. I cannot being to describe how satisfying it is to read through the lives and then watch the main character die and access what happened. Even the endings of the lives are good as you see the change of his mental state and priorities from the beginning to the end. The author does an amazing job at this.

Sadly the actual lives themselves are usually somewhat boring. They are certainly a story but nothing compares to the overarching story that is being told. They are also the majority of the book.

The beginning and end of the life are super interesting but the middle is dull and this pattern continues from book one. The world building continues to be great and I am excited for the next book in the series.

Book 2 was definitely weaker than Book 1, but mostly because we had to sit through some particularly difficult sections (both in terms of Xianxia content/values and the MC's changed psychology in one of his longest lives). While I understand the importance of showing this kind of challenge (being vague to avoid spoilers here), which definitely sets up some excellent character development, it felt like the pacing could have been sped up here. We understood where this was going and the length of time spent watching the MC be affected by this particular cultivation technique could have been shortened. That said, I really liked the Crafting elements and I was impressed with how the author keeps finding ways to expand out how Alchemy works (and interacts with other Crafts) at different Ranks.

There's a tragedy at the heart of this story but it's full depth is not know till the end.

While I read about Su Fang's relentless climb up the ranks of alchemists, I kept trying to imagine living a life where an outside infallible force constantly told me what to do to achieve my desires. If you follow it's advice, aren't you merely a puppet? If you go your own way, despite this advice, aren't you choosing to sabotage your own future? It sound's like more of a curse that a blessing. Now, imagine how your friends must view you, once they know of this "gift." How can they trust anything you say or do when your gift will almost certainly want to exploit everyone around you at some stage?

Thumbs down

It starts with an okay premise but it goes downhill from there. The MC stays pretty limited and naive. He doesn't use the system strategically at all; for example, he's stuck in a dungeon and instead of just using the system to portal out he kills himself. Higher affinities equal faster and better cultivating but he uses credit for anything but this, even knowing the higher his cultivation the more credits he'll receive.

This could have been a decent book if the author gave the MC some depth, a backbone and a little more smarts.

The story started to feel repetitive, but there was my favorite character always there to try to save the day. “Pei LiMei” or Mei for short, my favorite character. The way the author removed her from the story was downright devastating. Sadly, I don’t think I will finish this series after this step too far. I was hoping they would have been brought closer together after skipped years alongside each other. But, the author went the complete opposite direction.

Like many cultivation stories, this book expands the world view for the MC. The spending spree of credit points and the sheer variety of what's possible to purchase (along with limitations) made for an interesting read. The influence of cultivation techniques again had an important role, going as far as leaving the MC in despair. The ending was strong, just like the first book.

I loved this. This book really focused on how he finally starts to open up to people and how that starts to change him as a person and cultivator.

Thought the karma system was interesting. I also wish the author would focus more on other people’s blessings and how the MC has to overcome or utilize them to his benefit. The times the author did so in this book were some of my favorite parts.

Not bad but not great

The storyline throughout this book just wasn't a happy one. I kept waiting for the M.C. to buy a clue. He never did. The problem is the story is still interesting. Epilogue was ok.
Bottom line I'm interested enough to read the next book but I'm not looking forward to ir.

Water Flower

Su Fang has both lived and died many times since he became a cultivator. In order to try to better himself and his situation, he has decided to seek a spatial fire seed. This could allow him to create a whole world all to himself. One where he could be free from the all seeing Heavenly Dao.

This has been a really interesting take on regression and cultivation. I was worried that always starting again at the same spot would be repetitive, but his decisions make them all quite different. The side effects of using certain cultivation techniques is a great idea and explains a lot actually. Daniel Wisniewski does a great job with the narration!

Solid wuxia book with a moderately western bent

Deals with thoughtful explorations of concepts and the costs and tradeoffs one could face in life... Or multiple lives ;-). Good fantasy!

Great Cultivation LitRPG

I really enjoyed this second installment
of The Undying Immortal System. There is significant development of supporting characters and addition of new ones. The plot gets moved along while not feeling rushed.
Can't wait for the next book!

really interesting, I’m thinking of getting the patron

Book was great, interesting progressions. The story is well written and extremely clear. The focus is on the main character but the side characters are becoming more interesting. I’m really jonesing for the next book.

This one was a bit rough to go through. I found myself taking breaks just because I got fed up with the attitude of the main character. At the pace of the story, it'll be 10+ books before he can make a difference.

Really good

Simply put. If you liked the first book, then you're going to like this one. It's a bit slower paced than the first one, but that's just because the MC is growing as a character.

Highly recommended.

interesting read

The Confucian and. Cultivator culture is spot on, it’s interesting to have a non Chinese write about them. It gives a different prospective.

good read

This is a wonderfully done story. The MC is compelling and the OPness has some side affects that make the loops more appealing. I can’t recommend this more.

Ahhhh such a great book!

Wow what an emotional roller coaster ride of a story. I thought I loved the first book, well still do, but book 2 is even better!
