I Drank From The Nile: An Unbreakable Memoir of Resilience

Rate this book
“What kind of mother kidnaps her own child? The kind who has no other choice.”

Katya Dunko grew up in chaos, learning to silence her wounds. Home, for her, was never a safe place, it was something that did not exist on a map. Pills dulled the ache. Survival became her mask. And the person who should have protected her was the one who introduced her to addiction.

Determined to prove she was worthy, Katya followed love to Egypt, believing it would be her redemption. Instead, it became the place that forced her to face the past. Healing only begins when the silence ends.

Spanning four years and four countries, I Drank From the Nile is a haunting and courageous memoir about addiction, motherhood, and the unrelenting will to survive. It is a story of resilience, carved from pain, defined by endurance, and bound by one unbreakable the cycle ends with her.

For readers of Maid, Educated, A Memoir, Only Say Good Things, and The House of My A Daughter’s Quest for Freedom, this raw memoir of trauma, hidden addiction, resilience, and breaking generational pain shows that even in our darkest chapters, we can turn pain into power and find the hope to survive it all.

“A must read!!”

Possibly the best biography I have ever read. The author writes with clarity and feeling. Her understanding of the culture is remarkable. She writes authentically and unapologetically, and the book is difficult to put down.

“Thought-provoking and unforgettable.”

By the end, you feel as if you know Katya personally. My stomach was in my throat as she fled with her daughter. The honest account of opiate addiction and generational trauma is deeply real. As women, we often do not realize how strong we truly are.

This was such a powerful and engaging story. Not only was this book well written, but the author had a way of telling the story so it felt like they were right there next to you telling you about their experiences.

It was empowering to see all that they overcame and I was thoroughly invested in seeing how everything was going to turn out and be resolved by the end of the book.

Thank you to the author for a gifted copy of the book.

I could not put this down. I have to say, it was one of the most frank, candid, evocative things I have ever read. The way Katya carried that candour throughout the entire narrative is remarkable. The conversational tone made it seem as though she was sitting across from me, sharing her story directly.

I loved the dry wit, the authenticity, the way it made me pause and reflect deeply on events in my life I had long since shoved down to the back of my mind, more than once. The story has a way of inviting the reader to not only see and connect with Katya's experience, but to examine their own. It was richly detailed, vivid, immersive... It's a story that will stay with me for a long time. Make sure you have your tissue box at the ready!

I just personally was sooooo engrossed in Katya's story. I couldn't put the book down towards the end and debated an all nighter to finish it. I knew that she would most likely successfully escape because of her now being able to write about it etc but when I was reading it I was on edge waiting to see if she got out of Egypt with her daughter. I am giving it 5 stars because it's hard for a book to really pull me into the story so much that I couldn't put the book down. I'm also so glad that in the end she chose sobriety and broke the cycle as well. She saved herself and was her own hero in the story when no one else would/could be.

Wow! What Katya overcame in the first 3 decades of her life is more than most people survive in a lifetime. I found myself rooting for her over and over again, while riding the insane rollercoaster of events and self-sabotaging decisions that were made throughout her 20’s. An unbelievably unique memoir, with an unexpected hero, and fabulous writing!

A moving memoir

A very moving memoir about a young woman who has had many adversities and struggles to overcome. Katya’s writing at times makes you feel like you are curled up with a glass of wine while your friend tells you a heart wrenching tale about her past. This is one of those hard to put down books because you are constantly wondering how each situation is resolved.

Katya's story of overcoming adversity is nothing short of inspiring.

The foundation of Katya's life was built on her mother's empty bottles and neglect. Without a stable place to stand, without a safe place to call home, it only makes sense that she would end up trying to numb her feelings with substances. Such a small portion of this memoir focuses on her formative years, but the short pages are enough to understand that the abuse she was subjected to set the stage for her self-loathing and the reckless behavior that followed.

When she met Lucas, she was instantly in love. He was attractive, independent, worldly, and charismatic. Their relationship advanced quickly, and they began a life together full of travel and companionship. She longed to be his equal, but she didn't feel like she measured up. After a few years, and a fight over dinner about her "playing victim to her past", Katya comes up with an idea she hopes will help prove her worth to Lucas. She mentions moving to Cairo alone to work on herself, and to her disappointment, he enthusiastically agrees that it would be good for her and for them. But what should have been her chance to rediscover herself turns into an addiction-fueled nightmare that was almost impossible to escape.

I Drank From The Nile is the powerful story of a woman who, against all odds, broke free from generational cycles when she finally pulled herself from the haze of her addiction, found strength within, and chose to provide a better life for her daughter and for herself. Her bravery throughout this journey is a profound example of what women and mothers can achieve when they step into their strength and reclaim their worth.

Huge thank you to Katya Dunko for providing me with a copy of your memoir!

Katya is a world traveler with an unshakable itch for adventure. She has spent years moving across countries, most recently alongside her boyfriend, Lucas. Their relationship has grown strained, and Katya decides to prove her independence, and maybe prove something to Lucas too, by moving alone to Cairo.

What Lucas does not know is that Katya is addicted to opioids. Her addiction governs her daily life, and it follows her seamlessly into this new chapter. Cairo offers little comfort. The treatment of women is harsh, the accommodations are bleak, and yet Katya adapts. She parties with the elite, presents a version of herself that looks successful and thriving, and from afar, Lucas watches her life unfold and realizes what he may be losing.

But addiction is patient. It pulls Katya down slowly, quietly, until she meets a man who promises the life she has always wanted. What begins as hope quickly turns into something darker. The dream collapses into a nightmare, and Katya finds herself trapped in Egypt with no clear way out.

I knew within the first few pages that this book was going to be exceptional. Katya never sugarcoats her opioid use, nor does she frame herself as a victim of circumstance. Her honesty is bracing. Her resilience is undeniable. This is a story that shows, especially for women, that survival does not always look pretty, but it is powerful all the same.

I am grateful to have witnessed Katya’s journey. I hope she feels the worthiness, safety, and love she has always deserved.

I won a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This review is my honest opinion.

4.5- What a moving memoir. I kept thinking about this story when I wasn’t reading and towards the end I could not put it down.

I really appreciated the authors vulnerability and willingness to share her story. My heart was breaking for the things she went through and I was filled with rage by the actions of the people around her. I can’t imagine the strength and courage it took to face these trails.

My only minor criticism is that I found there to be some repetition in the writing.

I'd recommend it to anyone interested in overcoming trauma and finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

It felt real and raw. Exposing yourself in such a way, especially when admitting to ones substance use, can be so hard. I felt for the kid who didn't have anyone looking out for her or getting her into services. I could see the progression from childhood to adulthood and was surprised at Katya's strength to make changes in her life.

Nothing makes a woman determined like a child

I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway.
This is a story of a woman who always looked for approval from others. It is told in first person and I have to admit that I really struggled to finish. There are definitely times I felt engrossed but overall I struggled.

Hi Ms. Dunko, thank you for sharing your story. I can relate to many aspects of your journey. Even though I was raised in an intact nuclear family, I moved through physical and emotional abuse and neglect. Later in life, I had eight years long relationship with an Egyptian man that I escaped from. I too caused myself pain by choosing men who were not supportive or available. And I was very self-destructive in my 20s and 30s. I’m also a lifelong traveler and have thus far visited 59 countries including four trips to Egypt. And I taught as an international teacher in Vietnam. So I could relate to the wanderlust But the universe is good and I found healing through spiritual practice. And now I help others to heal as a licensed spiritual counselor. I wish you continued growth, self-love, and endless happiness. I know that joy and sorrow can exist together. Many blessings to you and your daughter.

A powerful memoir that left me feeling heart broken and inspired at the same time. This memoir dives into the complexity of struggling with addiction, sexual violence and the challenges/ changes of motherhood. I finished the book in several days as I had to know how Katyas story would end. Would definitely recommend reading!

I don't know how to describe this book other than: I could not put it down, and it absolutely wrecked me in the best way. Katya Dunko stowed away on a train as a child fleeing Ukraine, survived a decade of opioid addiction, moved to Egypt alone during the revolution to prove her worth to a man who didn't deserve it, escaped an abusive marriage with nothing but her daughter and her will — and then sat down and wrote every single word of it. Honestly.

What makes this memoir stand out is that Katya refuses to cast herself as a simple victim. She makes bad decisions. She knows she's making them. She takes you inside the logic of a person running from pain she hasn't learned to name yet, and it is so painfully human that you'll recognize pieces of it in yourself even if your life looks nothing like hers. The opioid sections in particular are visceral. She captures what it feels like to start every day in the negative, just trying to get back to zero.

The title is a saying in Egypt: if you drink from the Nile, you're destined to return. The cover shows her walking away from it. That tension, between being pulled back and desperately trying to leave, is what the whole book is about. It works for the addiction, the relationships, the childhood she couldn't outrun. Everything.

This is the kind of story that reminds you that somebody has to break the chain of generational pain, and Katya shows how it's possible. It's messy and impulsive and sometimes it takes fleeing a country with a newborn. But it's possible.

Katya and I talk about this book on my podcast, Babes in Bookland, and she is just as grounded, warm, and disarmingly self-aware in person as she is on the page. That conversation alone will make you want to read this immediately!

I DRANK FROM THE NILE BY @katya_dunko

This is one of the most eye opening, memoirs I have ever read. Katya takes us on a journey and tells her life story which is the most colourful life and takes you to places that you will never even imagine or have heard of before. By the time she is 27 she has already lived a thousand lives.

Katya has a hard life feeling unloved and unworthy and seeking validation from the men she loves and her family but she never seems to get it. No one deserves more validation and credit for merely surviving and showing warrior strength throughout the horrific events she has lived through.

Putting your memoir to paper when this is your story shows the most unbelievable amount of courage. A former addict and married to an Egyptian under the watchful and strict laws over there, with a desperate need to escape even if it means she has to kidnap her own daughter in the process.

You will read this memoir with your jaw on the floor in shock and come away admiring the author so much. What a woman!! You will be unable to put this down. Katya Dunko writes so beautifully, it’s like musical poetry.

I could not put this book down. I have worked with refugees and immigrants for 17 years, many from Katya’s home country of Ukraine. I studied Middle Eastern studies, and was very curious to see how she landed in Egypt. Her story of bouncing around and hardship is one I am familiar with all too well. Katya, if you see this review, you should be very proud of yourself and all you have overcome. You endured many painful hardships with the odds against you since childhood and rose above it all. Congrats on your ongoing sobriety journey. I am glad you and your daughter are safe. I wish you peace, happiness, security, strength and safety for the future. Thank you for sharing your story with us, it was brave of you to put yourself out there.

Dunko delivers a memoir that refuses the redemption arc's easy comfort, instead offering the harder gift of witnessed survival. The Egypt setting proves inspired, literalizing the metaphor of drinking from ancient waters while dying of thirst. What distinguishes this work is the unflinching examination of how addiction masquerades as functionality, particularly for mothers; the pills that dulled her ache also allowed her to perform competence while crumbling. The prose carries the urgency of confession without the performance of confession, creating intimacy rather than spectacle. For readers who have survived their own unmapped childhoods, this offers recognition without demand, solidarity without appropriation. A necessary, unbreakable voice.

Although I regret that Katya’s experience of Cairo—a city of historical legacy and striking beauty—was so bleak, I commend her fortitude. She fought her way through childhood hardship, the turbulence of adolescence, and drug addiction, taking it one hard step at a time. With forgiveness and love as her guiding principles, she built a life for herself and her daughter through her own courage and determination. As she wrote, “Choices are never easy,” but Katya proved that even in challenging circumstances, the right choices can be made.
